Weight loss and fat burning can be boosted by eating cayenne pepper, according to experts.
This is because the spice helps limit the amount you eat and encourages your body to burn more calories.
Dr. Marilyn Glenville, a nutritionist and author of The Natural Health Bible for Women said: “A substance called capsaicin is found in peppers and it is the compound that gives peppers their heat.
“It is thought to help fight weight gain and obesity by decreasing calorie intake and lowering blood fat levels.”
Dr. Glenville added: “The capsaicin’s heat may help with a process called thermogenesis where your body can convert fat into heat and so burning more fat which adds to weight loss.
“Including these thermogenic ingredients in your diet may boost your metabolism by up to 5 percent, and increase fat burning by up to 16 percent.”
What is cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper is a moderately hot pepper, rating between 30,000 and 50,000 on the Scoville scale.
The peppers in their natural form are red, 10 to 25 cm long and have a unique curve.
How to eat cayenne pepper
Cayenne pepper can be eaten in various forms.
The chilli can be eaten fresh in salads. The dried powder can be used on many foods including seafood, curries, casseroles and as a meat rub.
Cayenne pepper is also included in a fad diet called the Master Cleanse, which Beyonce reported to have used to lose 20lbs before starring in Dream Girls, although the singer has never confirmed this.
The plan involves drinking only freshly squeezed lemon juice, organic maple syrup, cayenne pepper and half a pint of water for each meal.
The NHS says of such diets: “Detox diets do not work. They are, in effect, a form of modified fasting.”
