The rock climber was in the midst of clearing a new climbing path when he hit a life-threatening obstacle.
Stefan Barthel had hoisted himself up to near the top of the cliff in Chulilla.
But as he tried to latch onto the next section with his pick, he accidentally caused an enormous rock fall.
A huge section of the cliff suddenly peeled away and crashed down far below to shrubbery on the mountainside.
Stefan swung himself back out of the way just in time to escape being bowled over by the crashing rocks.
The person filming the footage could be heard saying: “Woah!” before following the path of the falling boulders all the way down to the ground.
As they hit the sides of the mountain, the huge rocks disintegrated into nothing but dust, reinforcing the force with which they fell.
The extremely close call was filmed in a region frequented by rock climbers.
Chulilla in eastern Spain is home to over 800 climbing routes, with rolling green mountains and towering limestone cliffs lining the Turia river.
It’s not the only region in Spain where rock climbing is popular.
In January a British man died after falling 150ft from a cliff near Costa Blanca.
The 51-year-old rock climber was alive when rescuers reached him but died in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest at a fire station in Benidorm he had been airlifted to from the scene of the accident.
He was trying to scale Penya Roc in the north of Alicante province, a famous landmark which draws climbers from Spain and abroad.
It is understood the accident occurred when the victim’s rope broke during a small rockslide.
He was thought to have been practising traditional climbing, where the first climber or lead places their own protection including bolts for their hands and feet on their way up the rock face and their partner removes the protection while they are seconding the route.
Both him and his climbing partner were experienced in the extreme sport.
