UK snow warning: Heathrow cancels over 100 flights this weekend – is your flight disrupted

The UK Met Office has predicted further bad weather this weekend and has issued an amber weather warning with snowfall forecast on Saturday and Sunday across many parts of England and Scotland.

As a precaution, Heathrow Airport has cancelled more than 100 flights on Saturday to prevent further disruption to passengers on the day.

British Airways has cancelled more than 80 flights ahead of the bad weather including multiple domestic flights to Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow, Newcastle, Edinburgh, and Dublin.

Multiple transatlantic flights have also been grounded by British Airways at Heathrow, including flights to New York and Chicago.

Flights to Nice, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, and Geneva have also been cancelled ahead of the bad weather.

In a statement to the Express.co.uk the airport explained the cancellations were a precaution.

A spokesperson said: “Due to wintry weather and restrictions at some airports we fly to and from, we have merged a small number of our Heathrow flights to ensure that the vast majority of our customers are able to travel to their destinations as planned today.

“We are offering customers due to travel with us this weekend the opportunity to postpone their journey up until Wednesday.

“We’re sorry that some of our services will be delayed, as many aircraft will have to receive de-icing treatment before departure to ensure that they are safe to take-off.

“We would advise customers to keep checking our website for the latest information about their flights.”

Passengers due to fly from Heathrow, Gatwick or London City Airport are being urged to check before they travel as to the status of their flight.

Alongside British Airways, Lufthansa and Eurowings have also cancelled flights including those flying to Frankfurt, Munich, and Salzburg.

Some passengers wishing to travel with Air France and KLM will also be affected.

A spokesperson for Heathrow commented: “While this weekend’s weather may result in minor delays and some airlines consolidating flights, significant disruption at Heathrow is not currently expected.

“We are working closely with our on-site Met Office to monitor the further snowfall expected throughout the weekend. As always, we advise passengers to check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport.”

This disruption follows the flight cancellations at the beginning of the month when the “Beast from the East” swept across the nation.

The Easterly cold spell caused widespread havoc across the country affecting all aspects of public transport.

In total British Airways were forced to cancel more than 300 flights due to serve snow and ice.

Although the Met office is not predicting such widespread disruption, travellers are still being urged to check their travel plans before departing.
