WARNING: This article contains spoilers from The Walking Dead season eight, episode one.
The premiere saw Father Gabriel (played by Seth Gilliam) come face-to-face with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) when he was forced to hide in a mobile trailer at the Sanctuary.
The pair were stuck in the confined spot as walkers descend on to the premises, which was part of Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) plan.
When the leader of the Saviours saw Gabriel he warned: “I hope you’re wearing your s**g pants.”
However, the closing scene didn’t leave too many fans on the edge of their seats as many wondered why Gabriel didn’t shoot unarmed Negan there and then as he was carrying a gun.
One person wrote on Twitter: “Can anyone explain why Gabriel didn‘t just straight up shoot Negan? #TheWalkingDead.”
Another said: “Gabriel could’ve shot Negan with his assault rifle right in front of him. #TheWalkingDead.”
As Gabriel didn’t do the most logical thing, it resulted in some fans asking if Negan and Gabriel are on the same side and the former priest has been betraying Rick the whole time.
One person said: “Anyone else get the vibe that Gabriel is working with Negan? #TheWalkingDead.”
“Either Gabriel is working with Negan or Negan is about to drop a bombshell on him #TheWalkingDead,” commented another.
One sign which supports this theory is their meeting isn’t very tense when they see each other in the trailer as the pair acted like allies with their greetings.
Gabriel also already betrayed his group when he told Deanna Monroe of the Alexandria Safe-Zone Rick and his friends were dangerous and bad people.
Another point which backs up the claim is Gabriel has constantly been the person to warn people not to kill Negan and to focus on the bigger picture.
Could he be working with the leader of the Saviours?
The Walking Dead continues on AMC on Sunday and will follow a day later on FOX UK. Seasons one to seven are currently available to stream on NOW TV.
