The Island with Bear Grylls 2018: 'Wealthy' team SLAMMED after split from 'Working Class'

The new series of The Island with Bear Grylls is aiming to show it is not necessary to have an abundance of money in order to survive.

Two groups will go head-to-head to see who can last the longest on the remote island.

Each will be divided by wealth as a working class group go against those who are decidedly “posher”.

However, tensions rose between each team as they failed to decide which group was doing things in the right way.

The groups clashed when a fierce competition erupted at who could light a fire first.

What’s more, the wealthier team decided to split from the working class and head on their own path to survival.

However, Channel 4 viewers were not happy about the premise, especially considering how the rich team appeared to take string in a show of pettiness.

One rushed to tweet: “Can’t believe how horrible the posh contestants are on #TheIsland makes you root for the working class even more.”

A second added: “Why do the rich really think they are better than working class??? just cos you may have a big house and fancy car doesn’t make you a good person, being a good person is having manners and not judging someone on there background.”(sic)

Another agreed, saying: “Well done the ‘working class’ group. Hope them snobs do the split and all end up not having a fire, food or nothing.”

A fourth raged: “The attitude from the ‘posh’ group towards fellow human beings is a disgrace btw! Go on the working class.”

However, some didn’t like the chilled-out nature of the working class and criticised them.

One viewer argued: “Don’t think the working class did themselves any favours though.”

Another posted: “So the posh people make the shelter and then the working class just get in and sleep in it so there is no room for the posh and their forced to sleep outside. They make actual working class look awful.”

A third said: “Not sure why everyone on Twitter seems to be slagging off the ‘posh group’ and ignoring the fact the ‘working class group’ are acting like vulgar freeloading slobs.”

Meanwhile, Bear has teased the upcoming series to the Evening Standard, saying: “Rarely a day goes by without a report in the press of stagnating wages in often manual sector jobs and skyrocketing rewards within financial services and the like.

“As British incomes because more polarised, I wanted to explore whether financial success at home makes any difference to people’s survival skills when they’re asked to start again from nothing.

“Thought their 35 days on the island, there was so much talk about class and privilege, yet in reality both those things count for nothing in survival.”

The two teams are split between those who have an average wage of £100,000 and those who earn less than £27,000 annually.

The Island with Bear Grylls continues next Monday on Channel 4  at 9pm.
