YouTube’s latest Rewind video, the annual recap touting “the videos, music and trends that defined YouTube in 2018,” has become the most disliked video ever in the website’s history. The previous holder of this dubious title was Justin Bieber’s Baby, which over the course of eight years racked up an impressive 9.8 million dislikes. YouTube’s 2018 Rewind, meanwhile, charged ahead of this figure in less than two weeks, passing 10 million dislikes (according to LikesCounter) early on December 13th.

So why all the hate? No one video can appeal to all people, after all. But given the video’s whole purpose is to reflect on the year’s biggest YouTube moments, there are some very notable omissions. The KSI vs Logan Paul boxing match didn’t inspire an inclusion, while the likes of PewDiePie and Shane Dawson didn’t get a look in, either. There isn’t a mention of the mind-boggling Johny Johny Yes Papa viral video, which was somehow watched nearly 500 million times.

Of course, some of those creators — especially Logan Paul and Pewdiepie, for example — don’t have the best behavior records, but they continue to pull in hoards of viewers. So fans of these vlogger favorites have been left unimpressed with YouTube’s supposed “definitive” round-up and may have played a part in the mass-dislike frenzy. Of course, there are still a ton of names and creators in the video: Will Smith, Casey Neistat and Lilly Singh, for example — all of which are relatively uncontroversial, and are capable of securing large deals on the platform.

That might explain why Fortnite‘s Ninja features. He’s famous for being a Twitch streamer, not an original YouTube creator, but still enjoys incredible statistics thanks to his highlight videos. It’s pretty clear, then, that YouTube’s higher-ups have a different idea of what’s noteworthy to them, and what’s noteworthy to the viewers supporting the platform.

When YouTube first launched Memberships to give creators another way to earn money on the platform, it only offered the opportunity to channels with 100,000 subscribers. Now, the Google-owned video-sharing website is lowering the barrier of entry, giving channels with 50,000+ subscribers the chance to take advantage of the feature. Fans of creators who choose to implement Channel Memberships can get exclusive access to emoji, badges and other perks by paying a $ 5-a-month subscription fee. The creators could give them first or even free access to events, for instance, and other free goods.

YouTube launched Channel Memberships in June long with a merchandise shopping tool that gave creators a way to put up a built-in hub on their channel to sell their gear. The website likely conjured up both features to prevent creators from dropping their channels because of ongoing monetization issues. Due to changes to YouTube’s advertising guidelines, some inoffensive videos end up getting taken down. Creators then have to deal with getting demonetized and losing their (possibly sole) source of income. YouTube says Marble Machine creator Wintergatan grew his revenue by over 50 percent through Memberships — hopefully, smaller creators can replicate some of that success.

Starting next week, you might come across more YouTube ads that don’t come with the option to skip to the video you want to watch. The video-sharing website has announced through its official Creator Insider account that it’s rolling out non-skippable ads to all the channels that can already monetize their videos. YouTube first made the feature available to a select few as an experimental option. Now, the company says it’s releasing it to everyone in the YouTube Partner Program, so creators can get the chance to earn more money. After all, advertisers (unsurprisingly) tend to pay more for ads you’ll have to watch in their entirety.

Thankfully, it doesn’t sound like you’ll have to deal with watching the kind of lengthy commercials you’re used to seeing on TV. According to a Google Help page, the max video length for non-skippable ads is 15 to 20 seconds. That’s still three to four times the wait if you’re used to clicking the “Skip Ad” button as soon as the skippable format’s 5-second countdown is done, but it’s probably not a length that would deter you from watching something you really want to watch. It could still hurt creators who don’t have a lot of loyal fans and whose content and niche of choice aren’t that intriguing or unique, though.

When a creator gets access to the feature, it’ll be auto-activated for all their previous uploads. They’ll also be given access to tools that can track their non-skippable ads’ performance. If they notice a decline in viewership or earnings, they can always deactivate it for all their videos in settings.

YouTube has acknowledged the popularity of vertical video in its mobile apps, and now it’s embracing the format on PCs. The streaming behemoth has updated its web player with better support for different aspect ratios. If you’re watching a taller-than-usual clip, YouTube will both enlarge the video appropriately and scrap the dreaded black bars. This won’t make you forget that you’re watching footage originally intended for phones — it will, however, make the experience slightly less jarring.

The change even applies to regular 16:9 videos, taking advantage of the extra blank space to enlarge the picture. You might not rush to click the Theater Mode button quite so quickly as you did in the past.

This won’t convince your friends to shoot videos in widescreen, no matter how much you might plead with them to mend their ways. YouTube was just swimming against the current by assuming that every clip was 16:9, however. If it didn’t add support for different aspect ratios on all platforms, it risked losing out on creators and viewers who’ve grown up with Instagram and Snapchat.

YouTube Red’s Karate Kid sequel, Cobra Kai, premiered earlier this month and it has already been renewed for a second season. The first episode has over 20 million views, according to YouTube, and the season currently has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making the show a pretty big success for the subscription service. “This series had all of the right elements from the very beginning — compelling characters, a storied rivalry and the talented original stars,” Susanne Daniels, YouTube’s global head of original content, said in a statement. “The way viewers have embraced the new twist on this beloved franchise has been nothing short of amazing.”

 

 

In the reboot, Ralph Macchio and William Zabka reprise their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence. Lawrence opens his own dojo in his search for redemption while LaRusso, though successful, is struggling a bit without Mr. Miyagi to guide him. The first season was written, produced and largely directed by Josh Heald (Hot Tub Time Machine) and Harold and Kumar writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The three will also write, produce and direct season two.

Cobra Kai’s second season will begin production later this year and is scheduled to premiere on YouTube Red in 2019. “Continuing the Karate Kid saga with YouTube Red has been a dream come true,” Heald, Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement. “We are grateful to all our creative partners for giving us the freedom to revisit and expand the LaRusso/Lawrence rivalry. And we are truly exhilarated by the tidal wave of support from fans of this story, both old and new.”

  • Nasim Aghdam, the woman suspected of firing shots at YouTube’s headquarters and wounding three people, had an active presence online.
  • Images and videos uploaded to Instagram and YouTube accounts allegedly connected to Aghdam contained political messages and fitness tips — but also featured some heavy criticism of YouTube.
  • Several of the social-media accounts — including a Facebook and Instagram account, and several YouTube channels linked to Aghdam — have been taken down.
  • Her father, Ismail Aghdam, told Mercury News “she was angry” at YouTube.

The female suspect in Tuesday’s shooting at YouTube’s headquarters appeared to have an active presence online. YouTube, Instagram, and Facebook accounts connected to the woman featured a wide range of content — from dancing to fitness tips, and commentary on veganism.

Law-enforcement officials identified the suspected shooter as Nasim Aghdam, 38, on Tuesday night.

YouTube is finally giving its mobile app a dark theme, nearly a year after the Google subsidiary introduced the night-friendly mode on desktop. Unfortunately for now, the new dark theme will be arriving on the YouTube iOS app only at first, though the company noted that it will be arriving on Android “soon” too.

To activate the dark theme, head to the YouTube app settings and slide the little switch next to “dark theme” to the right … and hey presto!

This is hardly a world-changing feature on the face of it. However, much like how a simple cup-holder in a car can make or break a sale, a dark theme will prove a popular addition to the YouTube mix. Besides its basic aesthetic appeal for some users, the reduced glare will make it much easier on the eyes at nighttime.

YouTube has actually been testing the dark mode within the iOS app for a few months already, and the company revealed that it has become one of the most requested features on mobile since the theme launched on the desktop in May.

Dark themes are fairly common now across many online services, and given that more than half of all its video views now take place on mobile devices, it’s a wonder it has taken so long for a dark mode to land in the YouTube mobile app.
