Neil Young has been talking up his giant online archive for ages, but he’s finally ready to deliver on his promises. The veteran Canadian rocker has launched the simply-titled Neil Young Archives, a website that includes all the media he has produced to date. And we do mean everything — every song Young has made is available to stream for free (until June 30th 2018) through his Xstream Music service, including unreleased tracks.

Young naturally makes a big deal out of the audio quality, which improves the stronger your connection gets. He even devotes his introductory message to a long diatribe about Apple’s music quality choices on top of explaining how the archive works. Young would prefer that you listen on a computer, and even has a guide to help set up access on your home stereo.

Overkill? You bet. And ultimately, it’s serving as a sales pitch for Xstream. However, it’s still miles above the typical musician page offering the occasional freebie and a few music videos. This is an insight into Young’s entire history as an artist, not just a promotion for his latest album.

Ben Youngs has pulled out of the British and Irish Lions tour due to personal reasons.

BEN Youngs has withdrawn from the upcoming British and Irish Lions tour of New Zealand because of his sister-in-law’s terminal illness, the England scrum-half’s club, Leicester, announced on Saturday.

The wife of Ben’s older brother Tom, himself a Leicester, England and Lions hooker, has been suffering with cancer for three years.

Saturday’s statement from Leicester said: “the family has now received the devastating news that the illness is terminal.”

Later Saturday, the Lions announced that Scotland scrum-half Greig Laidlaw would take Ben Youngs’s place.

Ben Youngs made two Test appearances for the Lions during their victorious tour of Australia four years ago, with Tom, now 30, featuring in all three matches of the 2-1 series win over the Wallabies.

Ben, now 27, was selected in coach Warren Gatland’s 41-man party for the combined side’s three-Test series away to world champions New Zealand on the back of starring for Six Nations kings England this season.

But he informed the New Zealander of his decision to withdraw this weekend.

“We are a very close family and, as I am sure everyone can respect, time is now precious together,” said Ben Youngs.

“The most important thing for me at this difficult time is to be able to offer as much support as I can to Tom and his family in the remaining time we all have together,” added Youngs, who has won 70 England caps.

“It is a great honour to be selected as a member of the British and Irish Lions squad and I would like to thank Warren Gatland, the staff and the other players for their understanding in this situation.

“I wish them well and, like all rugby supporters in British and Ireland, hope they have a successful tour.”

In a separate statement, Gatland, again on secondment from his role as Wales coach, said: “We fully understand and respect Ben’s decision to stay at home.

“Family comes first and I know from having toured with Tom and Ben in 2013 how close they are.

“This is a difficult and important time for them and we send Ben, Tom and their family our heartfelt thoughts.”

Saturday saw Leicester secure their place in the title-deciding English Premiership play-offs and the Tigers said both Youngs brothers would still play the remainder of the domestic season for the Midlands club.

“Both families hope their privacy can be respected at this difficult time,” said the club statement.

“There will be no further comment from Tom, Ben or from Leicester Tigers at this point.”

Laidlaw, a veteran of 58 Tests and a proven goal-kicker, recently returned to club duty with Premiership side Gloucester after a knee injury suffered in January cut short his Six Nations campaign.

The 31-year-old Laidlaw, whose uncle Roy, an outstanding Scotland scrum-half, toured New Zealand with the 1983 Lions, was left out of the squad announced by Gatland last month, after the native New Zealander picked Youngs, Ireland’s Conor Murray and Wales’s Rhys Webb as his original No 9s.

At the time, Gatland stressed that Murray, his likely first-choice scrum-half against the All Blacks, had to prove his fitness before getting on the plane after suffering a neck/shoulder nerve injury playing for Ireland nearly two months ago.

Saturday witnessed Murray’s first appearance since being sidelined as he played 28 minutes of Munster’s 50-14 Celtic League victory over Irish rivals Connacht at Thomond Park.

Neil Young’s high-fidelity audio project Pono is undergoing a new change. In a post to Pono’s Community site, the singer informed users that after the company shut down its music store last summer, it will become a high-quality streaming audio service.

The new service will be called Xstream, and comes after Pono has struggled to relaunch its music store after its supplier shut down last year, and to find an audience willing to pay a premium for its audio files.

Young described Xstream as an “adaptive streaming service that changes with available bandwidth.”

Unlike all other streaming services that are limited to playing at a single low or moderate resolution, Xstream plays at the highest quality your network condition allows at that moment and adapts as the network conditions change. It’s a single high resolution bit-perfect file that essentially compresses as needed to never stop playing.

In the post, Young didn’t reveal when Xstream would launch, only that he will be announcing it “very soon.” He also didn’t get into specifics about what the service would cost, other than to say that he’s “insisted that there be no premium price for this service.” He went on to citing the difficulties that Pono faced with its music store, and that when faced with a choice, consumers will follow price, not quality.

Young first introduced the PonoPlayer in 2014 on Kickstarter, and its 2015 retail launch was accompanied by an online music store, where users could purchase high-quality audio files for the device. The service catered to audiophiles who were disgruntled with the lower quality audio that other online stores provided. While the service provided high-quality files to music lovers, its high costs (at times, almost twice the price of what its competitors were asking) left Young and Pono struggling to grow its audience.

In 2016, the music store went offline after cloud-based music provider Omnifone ran into financial troubles and went into court-ordered Administration. Because it was the only source of high-quality files for Pono, it’s demise forced Young’s company to find a new provider, 7digital, which prompted it to change its model from storefront to streaming service. In the post, Young noted that they began to work on rebuilding the storefront, only to find “how difficult it would be to recreate what we had and how costly it was to run it.” Young goes on to note that the company also faced difficulty raising money to implement its model, and decided to shift to a premium streaming service instead.

In shifting models, Young’s company is a latecomer into a crowded market that is already dominated by major players such as Apple, Google, and Spotify, and which already includes a service that specializes in high-quality audio: Tidal. It remains to be seen if Pono can adequately distinguish itself from its competitors to deliver its dream of high fidelity to the masses. We’ll know “very soon.”

Eddie Jones has primed his Grand Slam champions to hit the French with “daring” rugby from the kick-off to put down an indelible marker for the tournament.

England will set a national record of 15 successive victories if they win and take the first step towards becoming the first team to win back-to-back Six Nations Grand Slams.

“Traditionally, the Six Nations teams feel themselves into it a little bit and we don’t want to do that. We really want to hit the ground running,” said scrum-half Ben Youngs.

“We really want to set a precedent in terms of how we’re playing and show improvement from the autumn to now. A lot will be made in the coming weeks about this and that but for us none of it counts unless we get our job right on Saturday so the biggest thing we’re focused on is getting off to a really good start.”

A key figure will be Maro Itoje, who made such an impression in his first Six Nations last year but who is being asked to play out of position in the back row in the absence of the injured Chris Robshaw.

“If you have watched Maro at any level he brings ridiculous enthusiasm to the team and we cannot wait to see him there,” said England scrum coach Neal Hatley yesterday.

“He has heaps of potential and if you have a player with the mindset to get better every day then the world’s his oyster.”

France, who have not won at Twickenham for a decade, arrive holding grudging respect for England’s winning streak.

“England have been impressive. They are extremely efficient. They may not be the most elegant, or the greatest to watch, but they are the most clinical with New Zealand – and they win games,” said centre Gael Fickou.

“We know their strengths but also their weaknesses. We need to use those weaknesses to try to get something in Twickenham. I’m not saying we’ll win, but we will give it our best shot.”

England’s have the advantage of three games at Twickenham this season where they are unbeaten for 16 months.

“It certainly adds confidence and belief within the side. Hopefully we’re beginning to build that as a reputation as a side when teams come and they think it’s a really tough place to crack,” said Youngs.

“That’s something we want to continue to try and build and make it as intimidating as possible. It’s down to us to perform and keep continuing the run we’re on.”
