A group of tech-savvy Ukrainian soldiers is making drones and explosives to be used at the front line of the conflict in the country's Donbas region.

  • A team of young soldiers in Ukraine is building drones and explosives to be used on the front lines.
  • They are creating drones loaded with bombs to be used in combat in the Donbas region.
  • Some of the bombs come inscribed with messages like "happy birthday."

A new Agence France-Presse video shows a group of young Ukrainian troops making drones and bombs from a basement close to the front lines of the ongoing conflict in the country's Donbas region.

In the video, a group of around a dozen men in fatigues is seen working on small, remotely-piloted robots. AFP reported that the devices were scavenged from damaged aircraft.

The AFP video, which describes the men as a "group of 20-somethings," also shows a soldier named Varnak, who has been tasked with packing the robots with explosives.

"Their job is to make it move. My job is to make it explode, to fill it with explosives as effectively as possible so that it does the most damage to the enemy, or their tanks, or other military equipment," he told the outlet.

Also seen in the video were bombs made by the team, which come inscribed with personal messages to their Russian enemies, including the sarcastic "happy birthday" and the matter-of-fact "today is a Wednesday, man."

This picture shows bombs ready to be mounted on a drone in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, on September 25, 2022, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
These message-inscribed bombs are meant to be dropped from drones.

Ukraine has been wresting large swathes of territory from the Russians, particularly in the Kharkiv region.

However, the skies over the highly-contested eastern Donbas have been the site of a fierce aerial battle, with the Ukrainians leaning on drones created by its fighters — many of whom are tech enthusiasts — to be flown in combat.

The US has also sent thousands of drones to Ukraine for use in the ongoing conflict. The figure includes 121 Phoenix Ghosts, a type of unmanned aerial system that can be launched by front-line troops for single attacks.

Some actors are born to play the roles they inhabit. And that’s certainly the case with Matthew Willig, who brings depth and tenderness to his turn as Andre the Giant on NBC’s Young Rock.

Fans of the show got a taste of the former NFL offensive tackle’s range in this week’s installment, titled “My Day With Andre.”

In it, the wrestling great hangs out with a 10-year-old Dwayne (Adrian Groulx), aka Dewey, and takes him to the movies when his parents can’t. But first, they stop by the park and feed the pigeons, allowing both Andre and Dwayne to impart bits of wisdom to each other. For instance, Dewey tries to shoo away a portly pigeon he perceives as greedy. But Andre favors and defends the bird. Later, Dewey explains that like that pigeon, Andre isn’t too big; the world is just too small.

Matt Willig Young Rock “Obviously, being my size, there are few roles that come along where I can say, ‘That’s right in my wheelhouse,’” Willig tells TVLine with a chuckle. (His past roles include Birds of Prey and Charmed.) “You add in me gaining weight and learning some French, and I definitely committed. But you never know how people are going to perceive it.”

Reception to Willig’s performance has been considerably positive, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, whose life the NBC sitcom is based upon, praising him publicly.

“I’m humbled and thankful Dwayne gave me the chance to play this role,” Willig adds. “It was the right fit, and I knew that it was going to be a good fit, even though I’ve said that numerous times in my career. So to have this happen and have Dwayne believe in me and even post about it on social media means the world.”

To fill Andre’s considerable shoes, Willig packed on 35 pounds and sports a curly wig. “I wish I had that much hair,” he confesses. He even worked with a dialect coach. And while the Southern California native isn’t quite as tall as the late, great Andre — the wrestler was 7 foot, and Willig is 6’8″ — he knows what it’s like to be a big man in a small world.

“People ask me all the time how I don’t hit my head on doorways,” Willig says. “I’ve learned to just adjust. It’s the same thing when I go to the movies. I know, or I’m very aware, that if I’m sitting in front of somebody that needs to see, I’ll just slouch down.”

Matt Willig as Andre the GiantOn Young Rock, Andre doesn’t duck down at the movie theater, and the people behind him have to bob and weave for comedic effect.

“It’s just one of those things I automatically do,” he continues. “I’m always very aware of my surroundings, as far as that goes… I don’t even think about it anymore. It’s automatic. Being recognized a little bit and being really large, just walking around in a Las Vegas casino, for example, there are tons of people standing there, and you can see and feel them looking and talking about you as you walk by. Especially after I got into this business, I realized how tall I really am, because the smaller you are, the easier it is for production and camera crews and all that stuff. I do sometimes feel like I am a big man in a small world.”

As for “My Day with Andre,” Willig credits his young screen partner Groulx for being such a consummate professional.

Dewey and Andre, Young Rock“It was a really sweet episode, and it was a culmination of little Adrian and I having a nice relationship together and building that over the couple of months leading up to shooting that,” says Willig, the father of two daughters. “I think the kid is amazing. I love that kid. He’s so talented. When we’re sitting there talking, it really is kind of a nice chat. I was able to see the episode myself, and I’m really happy the way it came out and happy with the way that it feels. He’s teaching me, and I’m teaching him, and it’s a nice moment.”

Young The Flash Actor Logan Williams’ Cause of Death Revealed https://briefnews.eu/young-the-flash-actor-logan-williams-cause-of-death-revealed/ https://briefnews.eu/young-the-flash-actor-logan-williams-cause-of-death-revealed/#respond Sat, 16 May 2020 05:34:04 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/young-the-flash-actor-logan-williams-cause-of-death-revealed/

The mother of Logan Williams, the 16-year-old actor whose TV credits included The Flash (as Young Barry Allen) and When Calls the Heart, has revealed the cause of his death on April 2.

Marlyse Williams told the New York Post that according to preliminary toxicology tests, her son died of a fentanyl overdose, following his three-year battle with addiction.

“His death is not going to be in vain,” Marlyse Williams told the Post, expressing her mission to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic. “He’s going to help a lot of people down the road.”

Logan Williams made a total of seven appearances on The Flash, beginning with the CW series’ pilot. He last appeared in the Season 2 premiere, when he was age 12. Soon after that, he appeared in an episode of Supernatural — all the while juggling a recurring run on Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart, where he played Miles Montgomery.

Williams’ mother said that when auditioning became “way too stressful,” that was when Logan began experimenting with drugs, beginning with marijuana; she is uncertain when it progressed to fentanyl. In recent years, she remortgaged their home to send him to treatments centers in the United States and then British Columbia.

Marlyse Williams last saw her son on March 30, when they shared dinner three days before his death. “He said to me, ‘Mom, I’m gonna get clean, I’m going to get better. And I want my new life to start,’” she remembers. “I just know the last thing we said to each other was, ‘I love you.’”

Logan Williams Dies The FlashFlash star Grant Gustin said that Williams’ passing was “devastating,” adding: “My thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family during what is I’m sure an unimaginably difficult time for them. Please keep Logan and his family in your thoughts and prayers during what has been a strange and trying time for us all. Sending love to everyone.”

John Wesley Shipp, who played Williams’ dad in the flashbacks, likewise was “heartsick” to hear the tragic news, saying, “[Logan] was 100 percent committed to playing young Barry Allen, and we missed him once we moved past that part of the story.”

Coronavirus Shuts Down Soaps: When Will Bold & Beautiful, Days, GH and Young & Restless Run Out of Episodes? https://briefnews.eu/coronavirus-shuts-down-soaps-when-will-bold-beautiful-days-gh-and-young-restless-run-out-of-episodes/ https://briefnews.eu/coronavirus-shuts-down-soaps-when-will-bold-beautiful-days-gh-and-young-restless-run-out-of-episodes/#respond Wed, 18 Mar 2020 17:29:20 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/coronavirus-shuts-down-soaps-when-will-bold-beautiful-days-gh-and-young-restless-run-out-of-episodes/

It’s as if the residents of Salem have been preparing for a global pandemic all along.

As the coronavirus crisis brings television production to a halt, Days of Our Lives, which just months ago was dodging cancellation buzz, is in perhaps the best position of any TV series to weather the not-so-secret storm. The venerable NBC sudser — which has suspended production indefinitely — shoots a staggering eight months in advance. As a result, the soap has enough original episodes banked to last well until fall.

Daytime’s other three soaps, CBS’ The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful and ABC’s General Hospital have considerably less of a cushion. According to sources, Y&R and B&B were four to six weeks ahead when production was suspended this week, which means their respective wells will run dry in early May. GH, meanwhile, had roughly a month’s worth of episodes banked when production was shut down, which takes the soap through the end of April.

The four daytime serials have not set a specific timetable for a resumption of production, although CBS will reportedly reevaluate Y&R and B&B‘s taping status in two weeks.

Can soaps that are consumed on the daily sustain a prolonged outage? That question was first put to the test in 1995, when the months-long, live, daytime coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial pushed sudsers — back then, ABC, CBS and NBC each were home to multiple — off the air and eventually out of many viewers’ mindsets.

Young Rock: NBC Orders Sitcom About Dwayne Johnson’s ‘Formative Years’ https://briefnews.eu/young-rock-nbc-orders-sitcom-about-dwayne-johnsons-formative-years/ https://briefnews.eu/young-rock-nbc-orders-sitcom-about-dwayne-johnsons-formative-years/#respond Sat, 11 Jan 2020 17:47:15 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/young-rock-nbc-orders-sitcom-about-dwayne-johnsons-formative-years/

NBC is expanding its partnership with Titans Game host Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, placing a straight-to-series order for a sitcom about the wrestler-turned-actor’s tumultuous childhood, TVLine has learned.

Titled Young Rock, the project — which has snagged an 11-episode Season 1 order — will serve as an exec producer as well as a cast member. Per NBC, Johnson “will appear in each episode as the focus and inspiration of the series will be about his formative years.”

Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan co-wrote the pilot with FOTB co-exec producer Jeff Chiang and the duo will serve as EPs alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Brian Gewirtz and Jennifer Carreras.

Johnson bounced around a lot as a kid, attending high schools in Hawaii, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, during which he had multiple brushes with the law. He was reportedly arrested multiple times for fighting, theft, and check fraud before the age of 17.

Daybreak’s Krysta Rodriguez Talks Eating Bugs, Surviving the Apocalypse and Inspiring Young Girls to ‘Get Loud’ https://briefnews.eu/daybreaks-krysta-rodriguez-talks-eating-bugs-surviving-the-apocalypse-and-inspiring-young-girls-to-get-loud/ https://briefnews.eu/daybreaks-krysta-rodriguez-talks-eating-bugs-surviving-the-apocalypse-and-inspiring-young-girls-to-get-loud/#respond Sun, 27 Oct 2019 00:47:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/daybreaks-krysta-rodriguez-talks-eating-bugs-surviving-the-apocalypse-and-inspiring-young-girls-to-get-loud/

RELATED STORIES

There’s a moment in the fourth of episode of Netflix’s Daybreak when a barely recognizable Krysta Rodriguez clutches an enormous bowl of maggots, assigns a name to each individual squirmer, then proceeds to devour them all with a sickening grin on her gross (sorry!) face.

Sure, it sounds like the stuff of nightmares — and you’re not wrong about that — but it’s really just another day in the life of Ms. Crumble, a high school science teacher-turned-witch trying to make sense of a new, post-apocalyptic world where most of the adult population has been transformed into zombie-like creatures known as “Ghoulies.”

“When we meet her, she seems like a crazy person on the surface,” Rodriguez admits. “Just a wackadoodle nut bag. But as we come to realize, there’s actually a tragic situation happening here. She’s dealing with a traumatic brain injury from an atomic bomb, while also becoming part Ghoulie. She’s fighting this metamorphosis happening inside her body that’s telling her to eat people, as well as the part of her brain that’s desperately trying to be who she was before.”

Rodriguez — previously seen on shows like Smash and Trial & Error, as well as Broadway musicals like Spring Awakening and The Addams Family — admits that Ms. Crumble is the most original role she’s ever read, to the point where her first thought was, “OK, what am I going to do with this gal?” Fortunately, she says she “found a good balance” between the character’s outer eccentricity and inner turmoil.

Below, Rodriguez tells TVLine about the process of bringing this instantly unforgettable character to life, including the moment she knew that it was what she’d been waiting for her entire career.

TVLINE | Let’s start with a fun one: What would you say is the grossest thing you had to do as Ms. Crumble?
You’d think it was eating the maggots, but really, the grossest thing was having to look at [Josh’s severed] finger. Stuff that’s hyperrealistic is hard to get my brain around. I also had to eat a lot of ketchup, and let me tell you, ketchup by itself is disgusting. It needs salt and fries and grease. And I had to eat packets of it.

TVLINE | There’s also the part where Josh has to reach down into your mouth, but I guess that was mostly CGI?
It’s actually not all CGI. They took a mold of my face and made it into a puppet, so it’s a practical piece. The tongue moves, the mouth opens and it was my face. It’s horrifying. It took me so my surprise. I felt like I was standing next to my own dead body. So Josh put his hand down the puppet, and I had to stand next to him making gurgling noises.

TVLINE | And then there’s Ms. Crumble’s teeth. Did those take some getting used to?
In the first and second episodes, we were painting the teeth. Between every scene, I would hold up a fan, they’d pour the crap into my mouth and they’d a paintbrush to paint it onto my teeth. We had to do that probably 45 times a day, which was terrible. And I was swallowing it. It’s mint-flavored, but you just don’t want that in your gut. By the third or fourth episode, they made me a tray of painted teeth. It was like Invisalign. It was great.

TVLINE | OK, I’ve asked enough about her physical appearance. What do you love about playing Ms. Crumble and the journey she’s on?
In the pre-apocalypse, she was a woman who didn’t get her say. And in the apocalypse, she gets to be everything. She doesn’t have to look or be a certain way. She can scream and yell and fight — it’s the person she never got to be before. In that way, it was very freeing.

Daybreak NetflixTVLINE | She also seems to forge a special connection with Angelica. Ms. Crumble, at times, feels like the mother figure she never had. It really hit me during that scene in Episode 4, when she tells Angelica, “Let’s be monsters.”
There’s this really beautiful, nurturing relationship between them, and that scene hit me. I’ve played a lot of characters, and I felt like I was getting stuck in a place where I was playing the smartest woman in the room who just rolled her eyes at the men who were doing silly things. My function was always to be the girl to the boy, and I was getting frustrated with that. I never imagined that this apocalypse show about high school kids would be the show that broke that streak in such a way. When I was reading [Episode 4], I was like, “Here we go with a makeover story. Let’s not let the witch be who she is, let’s make sure she gets a makeover.” All these other people are fighting, and here we are stuck in the mall getting makeovers. Then I actually read the scene… and I burst into tears. This is what I’ve been waiting for my whole career, this moment where I get to say, “F–k that. Let’s be loud.” And it’s what I want to tell the 12-year-olds in the world. Get loud, get dirty and play hard.

The Disappearance Sneak Peek: Rectify’s Aden Young Stars in New Psychological Thriller at WGN America https://briefnews.eu/the-disappearance-sneak-peek-rectifys-aden-young-stars-in-new-psychological-thriller-at-wgn-america/ https://briefnews.eu/the-disappearance-sneak-peek-rectifys-aden-young-stars-in-new-psychological-thriller-at-wgn-america/#respond Tue, 09 Jul 2019 15:01:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/the-disappearance-sneak-peek-rectifys-aden-young-stars-in-new-psychological-thriller-at-wgn-america/

Even before The Disappearance‘s little Anthony goes missing, life for the Sullivan family isn’t exactly a peaceful affair — as evidenced by this exclusive sneak peek at WGN America’s tense new thriller.

The six-part limited series follows what happens after Anthony Sullivan disappears during a treasure hunt that takes place on his 10th birthday. Pretty soon, all of his family members are wrapped up in the investigation, consumed by the unthinkable horror of what might’ve happened to the boy. As everything unravels and tensions escalate, per the show’s official logline, “deep familial secrets become uncovered and threaten to shatter the family unit.”

Flashbacks like the one above illustrate how fraught Sullivan family dynamics were prior to Anthony’s incident. In the clip, the young boy (newcomer Michael Riendeau) sits quietly as a discussion between his father Luke (Aden Young, Rectify) and grandfather Henry (Peter Coyote, The 4400) turns into a heated battle at the dinner table. (And this is before Henry organizes the treasure hunt that goes so terribly wrong…)

The Disappearance, which aired on Canada’s CTV in 2017, gets underway in the United States on Tuesday at 10/9c. Press PLAY on the clip above to get your first look at the show.
