Nick Kyrgios was losing big at the U.S. Open on Thursday, and barely even trying. Didn't move while so-so serves flew by for aces. Casually put groundstrokes into the net. Double-faulted without caring.

The crowd began booing. The chair umpire, Mohamed Lahyani, decided to intervene. In an unusual sight for Grand Slam tennis, Lahyani clambered down out of his seat during a break between games, stood with hands on knees, and spoke with the 30th-seeded Kyrgios, saying, among other things, "I want to help you."

It all seemed like an impromptu intervention for the mercurial Kyrgios, right out there on Court 17 at Flushing Meadows, and it raised questions about whether Lahyani overstepped his duties as someone who's primarily there to keep score and keep order. Kyrgios went from trailing by a set and a break at the time to wresting control of the match — setting up a third-round showdown against Roger Federer — by coming back to beat Pierre-Hugues Herbert 4-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3, 6-0.

"This was not his job," Herbert said, adding that he thinks Lahyani should be sanctioned in some way. "I don't think he's a coach, he's an umpire, and he should stay on his chair for that."

Watch the exchange here:

After an unusual visit from the chair umpire, Nick Kyrgios turned around his match and won it to reach the third round of the U.S. Open. 0:25

A "comprehensive review conducted by a number of tournament officials" determined that Lahyani's mid-match chat with Kyrgios went "beyond our protocol," U.S. Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier told The Associated Press on Friday.

But Widmaier said that Lahyani would not be sanctioned because of his "exemplary track record as an international tennis official."

"He now has a better understanding of what our protocols are and was informed that he needs to stick to those protocols for the rest of the tournament," Widmaier said. "Each of his matches will be monitored."

Widmaier said tournament referee Brian Earley and chief umpire Soeren Frienel were among those who "met with Mohamed several times following yesterday's match" as part of the review.

Lahyani was assigned to umpire a men's doubles match on Court 13 on Friday.

During an occasionally confrontational and sarcastic exchange with reporters, Kyrgios laughed at the suggestion that he had received coaching or a pep talk from Lahyani.

'Not a good look'

"I mean, like, I don't have a coach. I haven't had a coach for, like, years. Of course he wasn't coaching me. Like, what are you talking about?" Kyrgios said.

"He said he liked me. I'm not sure if that was encouragement. He just said that it's not a good look," Kyrgios said about his chat with Lahyani. "Look. I wasn't feeling good. I know what I was doing out there wasn't good. I wasn't really listening to him, but I knew it wasn't a good look."

Kyrgios, a 23-year-old Australian, has run into trouble in the past for not giving his all during matches, even drawing a fine and suspension from the ATP men's tour in 2016.

As Herbert put it: "Just sometimes he's mentally not here."

What there's never been a doubt about, however, is Kyrgios' talent and ability to entertain — when he puts his mind to it. He burst onto the scene by stunning Rafael Nadal as a teenager at Wimbledon in 2014, and he owns a victory over 20-time major champion Federer, too.

After reaching the third round by defeating Benoit Paire 7-5, 6-4, 6-4, Federer criticized Lahyani for going to talk to Kyrgios for as long as he did, and from as close as he did.

Normally, a chair umpire leans over from his or her post to speak to a seated player during a changeover.

"I don't know what he said. I don't care what he said. It was not just about, 'How are you feeling?' 'Oh, I'm not feeling so well.' Go back up to the chair. He was there for too long. It's a conversation. Conversations can change your mindset. It can be a physio, a doctor, an umpire, for that matter," Federer said. "That's why it won't happen again. I think everybody knows that."

Sir David Attenborough shamed by the Queen ahead of broadcast: 'There's no pleasing you!' https://briefnews.eu/sir-david-attenborough-shamed-by-the-queen-ahead-of-broadcast-theres-no-pleasing-you/ https://briefnews.eu/sir-david-attenborough-shamed-by-the-queen-ahead-of-broadcast-theres-no-pleasing-you/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 01:04:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/sir-david-attenborough-shamed-by-the-queen-ahead-of-broadcast-theres-no-pleasing-you/

Renowned broadcaster Sir David Attenborough has met the Queen on many occasions, having produced a number of her Christmas broadcasts in the late 1980s.

But the acclaimed writer was put in his place when he asked the Queen to change her clothes, as the colour did not compliment the room he planned to broadcast in.

“There is no pleasing you people from the media,” the Queen reportedly said to Sir David.

“I am told by one lot that I have to wear something colourful so I can be seen in a crowd; and then you come along and tell me that I have to wear something pale and nondescript.”

However, this didn’t stop Her Royal Highness from working with Sir David again, in fact, the pair have collaborated on the new ITV documentary The Queen’s Green Planet.

Some would assume, Sir David is used to being in the company of the longest serving monarch then, but he has revealed he still gets anxious when it comes to meeting her.

He admitted he approached the garden walk and talk for the ITV documentary with some uneasiness.

“Yes, there was a certain amount of apprehension because all sorts of things could have gone wrong,” Sir David told Radio Times.

“There were problems in that where the palace is, geographically, there are always police sirens and ambulance sirens that make filming difficult.

He added: “But she took it all in her stride.

“It was a privilege of course, a very nice occasion — and she was very gracious.

“She is very unsolemn, very good at putting people at their ease.”

The Queen’s Green Planet is a one-off documentary, which focuses on Her Majesty’s plans to create a global network of forests across all 53 Commonwealth countries.

Sir David says the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy project is a scheme she cares for deeply because of her personal interest in the environment.

“She certainly cares for the Commonwealth,” he said. “And she very clearly cares for the natural world.”

Sir David, who was knighted by the Queen in 1985 and awarded the Order of Merit in 2005, believes the project with ensure the future of forests.

As well as following the Queen on her mission to preserve the natural habitat for generations to come, The Queen’s Green Planet will also see Prince Harry and Prince William do their part for the environment.

The cameras will follow Prince Harry when he plants trees in the Caribbean and Prince William and his family in Canada’s Great Bear Rainforest.

The Queen’s Green Planet airs Monday at 9pm on ITV.

Condolences and offers of help are pouring in from the hockey community for families of the Humboldt Broncos hockey team, which was involved in a horrific crash that left 14 dead and 14 others injured.

The accident occurred Friday when a truck collided with a bus carrying the junior hockey team to a playoff game in northeastern Saskatchewan. No names were released and police would not say whether the dead include players or coaches.

A photo showing three players lying side-by-side in hospital beds and holding hands circulated on social media early Saturday.

Rosemary Armstrong, the mother of former NHLer Colby Armstrong, tweeted that families could contact her if they needed a place to stay in Saskatoon.

Canalta Hotels was offering to take in family members of those affected. An online fundraising campaign set up for family members of the team had raised more than $ 50,000 early Saturday.

Hockey teams and players from leagues across North America tweeted messages of support.

Shetland fans OUTRAGED as 'worst ever' BBC news overshadows drama: 'How could you?' https://briefnews.eu/shetland-fans-outraged-as-worst-ever-bbc-news-overshadows-drama-how-could-you/ https://briefnews.eu/shetland-fans-outraged-as-worst-ever-bbc-news-overshadows-drama-how-could-you/#respond Wed, 21 Feb 2018 07:09:02 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/shetland-fans-outraged-as-worst-ever-bbc-news-overshadows-drama-how-could-you/

The BBC series aired its second instalment of the thrilling crime drama tonight, but hopes were dashed with the closing credits.

A voiceover announcement revealed that viewers will have to wait one extra day for the next offering of the Shetland aisles series.

The news comes because of a one-off scheduling conflict in the form of a major football game.

Tuesday night will see the FA cup final between Swansea City and Sheffield, meaning that unfortunately Shetland’s third episode will be pushed back.

As the news sank in, fans were left disappointed and forced to share their annoyance with the situation on Twitter.

One person wrote: “@djhenshall So there is no Shetland next Tuesday because @BBCScotland think I need to watch Swansea City v Sheffield Wednesday instead? Aye, right.”

“@djhenshall @AtotheOD – plot thickening nicely! But have to wait eight days for next episode. #Shetland,” another fan shared.

A third blasted: “This is an outrage, another day to wait for next week’s episode of Shetland what are you doing with your scheduling @BBC!

“What’s worse is I think my mum genuinely believes @AtotheOD has the power to change the air time ‘Just tweet Tosh it’ll be fine.'”

“Damn! I hate having to wait a week for the next episode of #Shetland but this week it’s worse….it’s a week AND A DAY!!!” a fourth cried.

Meanwhile, other viewers couldn’t help but notice an apparent blunder on the show.

Shetland locals are aware that the weather in Northern Scotland is rarely sunny, and more than that – the island suffers from ferocious winds.

But the series so far has shown mostly sunny calm days, leaving viewers baffled at the continuity.

One person said: “Dear @BBCOne continuity Shetland is not a tropical island. However I can tell you it appears to get lots of weather #Shetland.”

“Rather than spend time money on trendy sauf London voiceovers they could look up #Shetland on google earth,” another added.

Shetland continues Wednesday at 9pm on BBC One.

Saturday Morning: James Martin stunned as guest takes SWIPE at host 'How dare you' https://briefnews.eu/saturday-morning-james-martin-stunned-as-guest-takes-swipe-at-host-how-dare-you/ https://briefnews.eu/saturday-morning-james-martin-stunned-as-guest-takes-swipe-at-host-how-dare-you/#respond Sat, 06 Jan 2018 13:58:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/saturday-morning-james-martin-stunned-as-guest-takes-swipe-at-host-how-dare-you/

The TV chef was cooking a fennel chocolate cake during the ITV show when James joked about his abilities – saying he had “never lost it.”

Galton quickly poked fun at the television presenter, telling the 45-year-old that he “never had it”.

The former Strictly Come Dancing star hit back at the remark, saying: “How very dare you.”

James proceeded to jokily hit the guest chef with a tea towel as he reached for a sieve.

The Yorkshire-born star was joined by guests Amanda Lamb and Jonathan Phang, who giggled at the awkward incident.

Galton teased James while he produced a pre-made cake from the oven, to which Amanda gushed: “Oh, you are good.”

TV actor Jonathan added: “Smooth.”

While James took the comment in jest, his guest chef was quick to apologise.

Galton, 55, has appeared on the Saturday morning show twice before, last year.

Last month, James suffered an epic blunder when he accidentally melted a £10 note in front of Eastenders’ Adam Woodyatt.

James Martin’s Saturday Morning returns next Saturday on ITV at 9.30am.

Eamonn Holmes and Clare Balding CLASH in tense This Morning interview: 'How dare you!' https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-and-clare-balding-clash-in-tense-this-morning-interview-how-dare-you/ https://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-and-clare-balding-clash-in-tense-this-morning-interview-how-dare-you/#respond Fri, 22 Sep 2017 12:28:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eamonn-holmes-and-clare-balding-clash-in-tense-this-morning-interview-how-dare-you/

The ITV host, 57, seemed to rub presenter Clare, 46, up the wrong way when she joined him and Ruth Langsford, 57, in the This Morning studio to talk about her latest children’s book, The Racehorse Who Disappeared.

Clare revealed that the new story is a heartwarming one with a girl power message, inspired by the real-life events of famous racehorse Shergar’s kidnapping back in 1983.

Eamonn, however, was interested to hear how she got into the right space to write for children, asking: “If you’re grumpy and in a bad mood and have to sit down and write, how do you then get the nice Clare, the Clare who is going to relate to nine-year-olds who are going to read this?”

“Why are you suggesting, Eamonn, that there’s any other kind of Clare?” she responded tersely, joking: “How dare you? Quite offended, quite offended now. Not talking anymore.

“My trouble is focusing,” she admitted. “And I think for all of us, focusing is the difficulty. So when I write, I write very quickly, it’s getting me to sit down and concentrate.”

“And can I hear your voice? If I’m reading this could I hear your voice?” the host enquired, before she assured him: “Oh yes, there’s jokes in there for you as well. Because I’m very conscious that parents read to their kids, so the odd line that they can either explain or not is quite funny.”

“I like to do effects,” Eamonn chipped in. “I like to make noises. But I used to change the story.”

Clare didn’t appear to be impressed with that idea, snapping: “No don’t change it Eamonn, I wrote it.”

Towards the end of the interview, he then tried to squeeze a spoiler out of the author, beginning: “The big question I’ve got to ask you is, obviously the horse disappears -“

“No, don’t ask me whether they find it or not because I’m not giving it away, Eamonn,” she stated. “I’m just saying it’s not as traumatic as Shergar, okay?”

“Right, right. Okay…” he mumbled.

This Morning airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.

Colbert Says 'F—k You' to Trump, Disgusted by Transgender Military Ban https://briefnews.eu/colbert-says-f-k-you-to-trump-disgusted-by-transgender-military-ban/ https://briefnews.eu/colbert-says-f-k-you-to-trump-disgusted-by-transgender-military-ban/#respond Thu, 27 Jul 2017 14:43:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/colbert-says-f-k-you-to-trump-disgusted-by-transgender-military-ban/

Stephen Colbert, triggered by Donald Trump’s decision to ban transgender men and women from serving in the military, put CBS censors to work on Wednesday, cursing out the president in another scathing monologue.

“I began my day… as I often do, by checking Donald Trump’s Twitter feed to see how far the crazy has spread,” Colbert began. “I really think he’s off his meds, because today he went from crazy to cruel.” The Late Show host then read off POTUS’ tweets declaring transgender people unfit to serve in the U.S. military — a series of posts which Trump inexplicably ended with “thank you.”

“‘Thank you’?!” Colbert quoted, dumbfounded by Trump’s choice of words. “F—k you,” he replied, later pointing out that the expletive wasn’t anywhere to be found in his script. “Why the hell would he do this? This isn’t even one of his campaign promises. Back in the campaign, he tweeted” that he would fight for the LGBT community. “What the hell does he think the ‘T’ in LGBT stands for?” Colbert asked. “Trump? Tomato?!”

Colbert then turned his attention to Caitlyn Jenner, who was apparently shocked that Trump would betray the transgender community.

“Caitlyn, I don’t know if I’m the first person to break this to you, but he’s a liar,” Colbert said. “I know he said he was your friend, but he was using you, girl. You deserve better.” Worst of all, he continued, was that “those 15,000 transgender troops who volunteered to serve our country” were “rejected by a rich guy who [during] Vietnam sidestepped the draft with four deferments and a medical disqualification for bone spurs in his foot.” But in his defense, “they were manly bone spurs in a powerful dude foot that just got all ouchy when he put ’em in a boot.”

Holly and Phil CLASH during tennis towel debate: 'Judy Murray doesn't agree with you!' https://briefnews.eu/holly-and-phil-clash-during-tennis-towel-debate-judy-murray-doesnt-agree-with-you/ https://briefnews.eu/holly-and-phil-clash-during-tennis-towel-debate-judy-murray-doesnt-agree-with-you/#respond Thu, 06 Jul 2017 10:25:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/holly-and-phil-clash-during-tennis-towel-debate-judy-murray-doesnt-agree-with-you/

Video footage emerged yesterday of a man appearing to snatch a towel away from a young fan which had been thrown into the crowd by US tennis ace Jack Sock.

, 36, and , 55, clearly had different opinions after watching the clip and began to argue their points during the opening of the show.

“We disagree on this. You’re much more compassionate to the man who was in the front row,” Phillip started.

“I think it was a misunderstanding,” Holly replied, before going on to explain what she thinks really happened.

However, father-of-two Phillip was desperate to have his say and continued: “So from my point of view, here is a young chap who’s shouted from behind him…”

“Did you hear him shout?” Holly interrupted him, before Phillip snapped: “Well obviously the tennis player did!”

“Maybe he caught his eye…” Holly interjected with a cheeky grin on her face.

“They’re not making eye contact!” Phillip exclaimed. “So the guy has gone, ‘can I have your towel?’ behind said man’s head so he can hear him.

“While he was talking to his wife…” Holy added.

“Well he should be paying attention!” Phillip shrieked. “And not only that, I think the thing that fully condemns the man for snatching a towel off a child is the fact that he looks up!”

“But he thinks it’s fallen in his lap that’s why!” Holly replied, while still trying to argue her point.

“Well obviously Judy Murray doesn’t agree with you!” Phillip said, referring to a tweet posted by Judy yesterday which read: “If you’re the bloke in the blue polo shirt and hat, you should be ashamed…”

Holly then tried to neutralise the situation by adding: “Well I blame the tennis player, he should have aimed his throw better!”

The duo then went on to confirm that tennis player Jack, 24, had been in touch with the young fan and sent him a fresh towel.

Gordon Ramsay UPSETS Ruth Langsford as he annihilates her baking: 'I've gone off you' https://briefnews.eu/gordon-ramsay-upsets-ruth-langsford-as-he-annihilates-her-baking-ive-gone-off-you/ https://briefnews.eu/gordon-ramsay-upsets-ruth-langsford-as-he-annihilates-her-baking-ive-gone-off-you/#respond Wed, 19 Apr 2017 14:20:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/gordon-ramsay-upsets-ruth-langsford-as-he-annihilates-her-baking-ive-gone-off-you/

The straight-talking chef appeared to discuss his upcoming show, Culinary Genius, after a planned appearance on yesterday’s show was cancelled due to Theresa May’s snap General Election announcement.

However, Ruth and her co-host Eamonn Holmes recorded the interview and showed it on today’s show.

Keen to show off her new baking skills, Ruth asked Gordon for his honest opinion of her Easter meringue.

The 50-year-old chef began his criticism, saying: “First of all, the colour is dreadful. You need to put a touch of lemon juice in the egg white to keep it nice and stiff and bright white.”

He didn’t stop there though, adding: “They haven’t raised enough so its going to be too chewy inside. It would be like eating a bar of sugar.”

It was at this point that Ruth decided to hit back at Gordon, telling him that she “tried really, really hard” at her attempt.

The 57-year-old began: “[Meringue’s] supposed to be a bit chewy.

“Can I just say I’m really hurt actually because that was my first ever meringue. I like cooking but I can’t bake and I tried really really hard,” Ruth opposed.

Trying to make light of the situation, husband Eamonn stepped in to remind Ruth that they “should have bought one” instead of trying to make a meringue.

Clearly having none of it, Ruth snapped back: “Don’t you start, it was delicious.”

However, Gordon wasn’t done there and tried to go in again, asking Eamonn if he had tried the meringue in question.

A fired-up Ruth replied before Eamonn even could, saying: “Don’t ask with such surprise, ‘Did you eat it?’

“I’ve gone right off you, I liked you before this,” Ruth finished.

The presenter’s woes didn’t stop there as she was left with a nasty cut on her finger during a cooking segment with Gordon that went awry.

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10:30am.
