]]>
It found that house price growth in Barnet in London, outpaced average earnings by £52,256 over the two-year period – the highest difference in the survey.
North Hertfordshire had the second biggest gap, at £40,903, while Canterbury, Guildford and Oxford were also places where house prices have surged particularly far ahead of average earnings.
The proportion of areas where house prices are outpacing earnings has fallen, from 31 per cent in 2016 to 18% in 2017, Halifax said.
The report also highlighted a continued north/south divide, with 86 per cent of areas where the average house price rise is greater than local earnings over the past two years being in London, the South East, South West or the East of England.
This share is down slightly from the last year when 93 per cent of areas came from these four regions.
No district in the north east of England, Yorkshire and the Humber, Scotland and Northern Ireland saw average house price growth eclipse average take-home earnings over the past two years, according to Halifax’s report.
Away from southern England, strong performers for house price growth compared with earnings included Harborough in the East Midlands, with house price gains of £19,662 more than earnings, as well as the Ribble Valley in the North West (£8,217), Tamworth in the West Midlands (£3,226) and Denbighshire in Wales (£793).
Russell Galley, managing director at Halifax, said: “Over the past two years, we have seen house price growth and earnings converge at a national level, leading to a drop in the total number of areas where the average house price rise is greater than owners’ take-home earnings.
“Despite the slowdown in house price growth in southern England, it has still outpaced wages across most of the region. This means that middle earners are also facing a challenge getting on to the property ladder.”

A total of 160,606 homes were registered during 2017, up 6 per cent on the previous year and the highest since pre-economic downturn levels, the National House Building Council (NHBC) said.
It was the highest annual figure since 198,929 homes were registered in 2007.
The NHBC’s registration statistics are taken from builders who are responsible for around 80 per cent of homes constructed in the UK.
Builders are required to register a house with the NHBC, a warranty and insurance provider, before starting work, which means its figures represent homes to be built in the months ahead.
New home completions also increased by 4 per cent compared with 2016, reaching 147,278 last year.
Nine out of 12 UK nations and regions saw an increase in registrations, with the East Midlands, Wales and North West England among the growth hotspots.
Figures for London showed the rate of new homes being registered was slightly up on 2016, marking the first increase year on year in the capital since 2014.
Within 2017’s annual total of new homes being registered, those in the private sector grew by 3 per cent annually, with 118,825 new homes registered, and the affordable sector increasing by 14per cent to 41,781 – the highest yearly total for the sector since the NHBC’s electronic records started 30 years ago.
NHBC chief executive Steve Wood said: “Our figures show the market has delivered strong growth resulting in the highest new home figures for a decade and growth across the majority of the UK, including London, for the first time since 2014.
“Looking ahead, NHBC will continue to work with the industry to help raise the standards of new homes.
“With 6 per cent growth in the quantity of new home registrations, the focus on delivering quality for consumers remains critical.”
DETROIT – In an auto industry race to develop electric vehicle batteries that charge faster and are cheaper and safer than lithium-ion cells, startup Zap&Go will do all that with its carbon-ion alternative ‘within a few years’, a company executive said. Oxford, England-based Zap&Go will begin production of its carbon-ion battery in 2018, in partnership with Chinese lithium-ion battery maker Li-Fun Technology Co Ltd. Its first application – an electric scooter that charges in five minutes – is also due to launch next year.
But, like other startups and universities exploring faster charging, more stable alternatives, Zap&Go’s technology doesn’t yet quite match up to the performance of lithium-ion.
“Today it’s a developing technology, so it’s not as good,” Zap&Go’s chief executive Stephen Voller told Reuters on Monday. “But our plan over the next few years is to meet or exceed lithium-ion.”
Policymakers in China and elsewhere are pushing a shift to electric cars over the next two to three decades. Automakers from General Motors to Toyota are rushing to develop them, but the time required to charge vehicles remains an issue for consumers.
Electric vehicle makers have cut lithium-ion charging time to 30 minutes for a partial charge, but Voller said his firm’s batteries – made using a nanocarbon – are being designed to fully charge in five minutes. That would allow consumers to refuel as quickly as they fill cars up with gasoline.
Other companies are also chasing lithium-ion alternatives. Last month, Israel’s StoreDot raised $ 60 million in a third round of financing led by German automaker Daimler AG’s truck division. StoreDot says its batteries – using nanomaterials and proprietary organic compounds – can fully charge any electric vehicle in five minutes.
But auto industry executives are wary of breakthrough battery claims. Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk said on the luxury electric carmaker’s second-quarter earnings call that there are “some interesting things on the horizon, but … it’s not like it suddenly pops out of nowhere.”
Zap&Go, which licensed its original patents from the University of Oxford, has raised $ 13 million in funding, much of it from high-net worth individuals. More funds are being raised via crowdsourcing, said Voller, who hopes to attract institutional investors.
The company is also developing a system of energy storage, which would allow fueling stations to draw energy from the grid overnight for motorists to charge up during the day without impacting too hard on the power supply. (Reporting By Nick Carey, Editing by Rosalba O’Brien)

But it’s not Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino – despite the pair costing more than £60million between them.
Instead Kop legend Dalglish has highlighted Dominic Solanke, a 20-year-old summer signing from Chelsea, as the man who could become a future hitman.
That’s despite Solanke not having scored for the club since arriving at Anfield.
Dalglish said: “They have signed the young lad Solanke up front who’s only 20.
“He might be a good goalscorer for Liverpool in the years to come.”
Although Daglish hasn’t forgotten Salah altogether.
He added: “Mo Salah has been the most exciting signing of the summer for Liverpool. He’s come in after a fantastic season last year with Roma.
“Obviously some people over here had already seen him play whilst he was at Chelsea but he’s come in and scored a good few goals and has looked really threatening, he’s really quick.
“He takes it up to people and they start to panic.
“He can go inside or out but he obviously prefers it on his left foot.”
Liverpool take on Manchester United on Saturday in the early kick-off at Anfield.
Brit Helen Richardson, who lives in the Dominican Republic, was set to appear on the ITV show this morning as she prepares for the fatal storm to hit the Caribbean Island.
Good Morning Britain hosts Susanna Reid, 46, and Ben Shephard, 42, were left panicked when Helen’s video call suffered a major technical error, which subsequently terminated their interview.
“We saw you earlier Helen, and all the preparation you’ve done in your house,” said Susanna.
“You were worried about when the hurricane hits the Dominican Republic – what’s happening so far?”
However, as viewers waited with baited breath to hear how Helen was coping with the monstrous gusts, the screen stood still.
“Unfortunately the picture is frozen,” sighed Susanna.
Ben chipped in: “That’s what’s happening.”
Susanna tried to assure: “I suspect that is a Skype technical glitch our end rather than anything.”
Ben told audiences that they spoke to Helen earlier when she said the winds had already begun.
He added that Helen claimed that in 20 years, “she’s never been so scared”.
Hurricane Irma has already claimed seven lives as she sweeps through the Caribbean and is currently on track to reach Florida and the USA.

On Friday, the Trump administration issued an order prohibiting Americans from dealings in new debt and equity issued by the Venezuelan government and by its state oil company, PDVSA.
The White House said the measures “are carefully calibrated to deny the Maduro dictatorship a critical source of financing to maintain its illegitimate rule.”
“We don’t agree with anything that Maduro is doing,” US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, said on Friday, calling Venezuela’s recently elected Constituent Assembly a “sham.”
The US will continue to increase pressure on Venezuela until its citizens’ “rights and democracy are fully restored,” said President Donald Trump’s National Security Adviser, H.R. McMaster, announcing the new sanctions alongside US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.
Exceptions will be made for certain transactions between the US and Venezuela, including petroleum exports and imports involving Citgo, PDVSA’s American unit, as well as financing for humanitarian efforts, Mnuchin said.
Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza blasted the move, saying “today’s financial sanctions are the worst aggression towards Venezuela in the last 200 years.”
The US is trying to promote a humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, Arreaza said, adding: “We will protect our people and our democracy with all means we have.”
It was not immediately clear how hard the sanctions would hit Venezuela’s vital energy sector and whether they would affect its dealings with investors from other countries.
Earlier in August, PDVSA reduced crude sales to Citgo Petroleum while increasing supply to Russia’s Rosneft, Reuters reported.
Previous sanctions
The US had imposed several rounds of sanctions against individuals and officials in Venezuela, including President Nicolas Maduro, over the Constituent Assembly elections in July, which the US called illegitimate and refused to recognize.
“I am proud of the alleged sanctions… because I do not wag my tail like a lying dog,” Maduro said after the US announced sanctions against him. “I am punished for defending the natural resources of Venezuelan lands.”
Venezuela held the elections following months of street protests and clashes in which more than 100 people have died. Despite the violence and opposition boycott, over 8 million people participated in the process by casting their votes for the 545 candidates who will be empowered to draft a new constitution.
The opposition says that the vote will give the ruling Socialist Party unprecedented powers, as well as a mandate to deny lawmakers parliamentary immunity.
In an interview with RT in July, Maduro said the US was trying to disrupt Venezuela’s economy through an “indirect blockade,” targeting the country’s financial system, adding that the US attempted to do the same thing in 2015 and 2016, with no success.
Possibility of US military intervention
The US said that the Venezuelan leadership “undermined democracy” by conducting the constituent assembly elections.
On August 11, President Trump said he considered a “military option” to resolve Venezuela’s political crisis. In response, Maduro announced a nationwide military drill to fend off a possible “imperialist” invasion.
“I have given the order to the armed forces’ joint chiefs of staff to start preparations for a national civil-military exercise for the integrated armed defense of the Venezuelan nation,” Maduro told supporters who had gathered in the nation’s capital. The drills are scheduled for August 26-27.
“No military actions are anticipated in the near future,” McMaster told reporters on Friday, adding that Trump was presented with “many options” in case the situation in Venezuela deteriorated.
Latin American leaders, including presidents of Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama, have spoken forcefully against the possibility of a US military intervention in the country. They conveyed the message to US Vice President Mike Pence, as he traveled to the region to drum up support for US pressure on Maduro.
A number of countries, including the UK, the US and Argentina, have refused to recognize Venezuela’s Constituent Assembly election. Russia, however, said the vote was laying the basis for a peaceful resolution of the issues plaguing the country.
“We regret to note that opposition forces did not respond to the call to take part in the vote, but tried to hamper the elections instead, provoking clashes that have resulted in loss of life. We urge the opposing parties to stop the pointless violent confrontation,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on July 31.

One in three stroke victims will be struck down within five years and one in 10 will get dementia within 12 months, say experts.
It means that more than 33,000 people will be ravaged by the incurable condition – with three quarters having vascular dementia, the second most common type after Alzheimer’s, which is linked with blood supply problems to the brain.
The crisis has prompted three of Britain’s biggest charities to join forces and fund a research programme to try to defuse the looming health timebomb.
The British Heart Foundation, Alzheimer’s Society and Stroke Association are investing £2.2million in a world-first project to try to unpick the causes of vascular dementia.
Professor Joanna Wardlaw, of Edinburgh University, said: “By comparing those who develop vascular dementia after stroke with those who don’t we hope to find out what causes it and find a way to prevent it.”
There are more than 100,000 strokes every year with 1.2 million people currently living with the disabling effects of the killer condition.
New analysis shows the number of new strokes across Europe is likely to increase by a third while in Britain this figure could rocket by 44 per cent to 144,000 by 2035.
Juliet Bouverie, chief executive of the Stroke Association, said: “These are shocking figures and if they are borne out health services will face a formidable challenge in tackling a stroke epidemic.
“There are alarming variations in delivering even the basic levels of treatment and care for stroke patients, such as access to stroke units and thrombolysis.
“Without reorganisation, patients are less likely to receive the treatment and care which will save their lives and reduce disability.”
The figures come from The Burden of Stroke in Europe a comprehensive analysis of 35 European countries carried out by King’s College, London, and published today to mark European Stroke Awareness Day.
Experts said the number of strokes is set to dramatically rise largely due to a rapidly ageing population.
Professor Christopher McKevitt, from King’s College, London, said: “Our report shows your chances of getting the best quality care when you first have a stroke vary widely across Europe. ‘It also shows that we know very little about what care stroke survivors get after discharge from hospital.
“As the population ages, more people will have a stroke and more will survive with long-term disabilities.
“We need to ensure better access to the best acute stroke care for all and we need to focus efforts on improving support for stroke survivors in the months and years after they are sent home from hospital.”
Ms Bouverie said: “While it is good news many more people are now surviving a stroke we also know their needs are not currently being met after they’ve received initial life-saving treatment.
“In England, our stroke strategy ends in 2107, leaving us as the only UK nation without a plan for stroke.
“There are big issues still to tackle in basic treatment, care and long-term support which demand Government commitment and a national plan which prioritises stroke and stroke survivors.”
The outstanding growth of the UK coffee industry could lead to a surge in the amount of coffee jobs being advertised, according to the London Coffee Festival (LCF).
Their study predicted 40,000 new baristas jobs are needed in the next six years.
With the coffee industry continuing to grow at an incredible rate in the UK, the nation is fast running out of baristas to keep the flat whites flowing.
New research released by LCF has found that there are now 150,000 baristas working in the UK, but we will need a further 40,000 in the next six years to maintain the rate at which Brits are lapping up their lattes.
Coffee shops are set to exceed 30,000 nationwide by 2025 – an additional 7,155 cafes – so baristas will need to be recruited.
The good news for Brits is that there seems to be no shortage of talented baristas in the UK.
The top twelve of the 20 baristas shortlisted for the Coffee Masters 2017, taking place at London Coffee Festival this month, are all from the UK – showcasing the UK’s prominence in top-level mastery of the craft.
Jeffrey Young, CEO & Founder of Allegra Group, says: “Coffee is taking over the nation and with that comes a surge in demand for skilled baristas to keep the lattes flowing.
Most Brits head to the supermarket to do their weekly shop where they can buy everything they need in one place.
However, by doing this customers could be spending up to double what they need to on some items.
