The host of the show, Miranda Hart, managed to rope the Duke of Cambridge into recreating a “posh party” just minutes into the programme.

After the audience completed their part, the 35-year-old shouted out “such fun” from the royal box where he sat alongside his wife Kate Middleton.

Later on, he made viewers’ night as he joined in with Miranda’s favourite activity – galloping.

The comedian got a member from the cast of Annie to ask the second-in-line to the throne to partake.

William’s head fell into his hands at the request but he soon got up and galloped on the spot whilst Kate burst out laughing.

Those watching the show heaped praise on the father-of-two for being a “great sport”.

One person wrote on Twitter: “Prince William galloping has made my year #RoyalVarietyPerformance #2017made.” 

“Only Miranda Hart would be able to get Prince William to gallop #RoyalVarietyPerformance,” another added.

A third gushed: “Love #PrinceWilliam what a great sport #RoyalVarietyPerformance!!”

“I do love Prince William he always gets involved #RoyalVarietyPerformance,” said one viewer.

On the night many acts including Paloma Faith, Leading Ladies, Seal and Britain’s Got Talent winner Tokio Myers performed.

At first, just vague mumblings out of the annual BioSteel Camp, where NHL players hit the ice and the weight room before official training season starts in September.

Some reporters found themselves wondering if Connor McDavid didn’t look, if possible, faster than he had been last season.

The first thought on hearing the news was: How is that even possible?

The hockey world, and the defencemen on 30 other NHL teams, anxiously awaited confirmation.

It came Wednesday night, during the Oilers season opener at Rogers Place, when McDavid proved to the world he has another, otherworldly, gear.

On his first shift, 29 seconds into the game, McDavid took a little pass from Leon Draisaitl at the Oilers blue-line and the track meet began. Flames defenceman Dougie Hamilton found himself too close to McDavid. His partner, T.J. Brodie, was already turning to skate back into his own zone.

A second later, with McDavid accelerating, Hamilton was already out of the play.

Another second later, at the opposing blue-line, the Oilers captain blew through the gap between the two Flames and went in alone on goalie Mike Smith, who made a great pad save.

Minutes later, McDavid beat Smith on a nifty pass from Draisaitl, and the Oilers led 1-0.

Yet, despite the speed and the unreal acceleration, McDavid’s play looked like so many others fans have seen over the past two seasons.

Between periods, Sportsnet host Daren Millard brought up the subject immediately.

“There’s a feeling out there,” he said, “That Connor McDavid is actually faster than he was last year.”

“Well,” said panelist Doug MacLean, “If that’s the case, he’s not skating anymore. He’s airborne.”

MacLean then summed up what that would mean.

“Most defense corps around the league are hoping that is not the case. But I’ll tell you what, there’s evidence tonight that he’s as fast, or faster, than he was last year.”

Those defencemen, the guys on the other 30 NHL teams, had their hopes dashed around the eight minute mark of the third period.

With the score unchanged and the play deep in the Oilers zone, the puck popped loose and McDavid scooped it up along the half-wall and turned on the jets.

He crossed his own blue-line. The same defencemen he had burned in the first period were on the ice. Brodie was already in no-man’s land between the blue-line and centre-ice. Hamilton was further back, close to the red-line.

Both are good skaters. These aren’t exactly slow guys.

But it was already over.

By the time McDavid blurred past centre ice, Brodie was done.

Against any other player, Hamilton might still have had a chance.

In this case, nah, no chance. None.

McDavid was in the clear, swooped in on goal, and lifted the puck over Smith’s left shoulder.

Oilers 2, Flames 0.

And with that, the rumours from the summer ceased to be rumors.

A third goal to complete the hat trick came in the dying minutes of the game, and gave Oilers fans the chance to litter the ice with ball caps.

After the game, coach Todd McLellan was asked about McDavid’s speed and found himself, once again, trying to explain the inexplicable.

“You guys keep asking me these questions,” he said. “I know you want answers. But it’s what he does. He doesn’t go from first to second, to third to fourth gear. He just goes from first to fourth gear, and he’s gone.”

A fitting description. But by no means an explanation.

Oilers defenceman Oscar Klefbom, too, was asked for his perspective.

“I know exactly how those defensemen feel in Calgary right now,” he said. “I play against Connor every single day in practice. It’s tough, because he makes you look silly.”

It was McLellan who had to try to answer the questions posed over the summer.

“Could he possibly,” a reporter asked, “be faster than he was last year?”

The coach hesitated, pondering.

“Well, Connor has to improve,” he finally said. “Why not get faster?”

Indeed. Just what NHL defencemen wanted to hear.

Louise Gray decided to eat only what she could catch herself

As Louise Gray’s finger hovered over the trigger of her hunting rifle, she wondered if she was making a terrible mistake.

She had taken a vow that for one year the only meat or fish in her diet would be what she could catch herself.

Yet as a rabbit came into her sights she didn’t know if she would be able to pull the trigger.

“I’d practised shooting with the gamekeeper beforehand so I felt competent but I wasn’t prepared for how emotional it would make me feel. I wanted to go home and curl up and cry,” says Louise.

The daughter of a farmer, she had always taken an interest in where her food came from and tried to eat ethically as much as she could.

“I was what I call a ‘blind omnivore’. I did think about my food and I mostly bought free-range meat but sometimes I’d wobble. Like most people, I didn’t have much money or time.”

However after working as an environmental correspondent for a national newspaper, she started to realise the impact eating meat has on the planet.

“I was interviewing scientists every day about climate change and about what the consequences might be if we carried on farming the way we do. I knew one of the easiest things I could do would be to eat less meat but every time I tried to be vegetarian, I gave up. So I decided to still eat meat but only if I knew exactly where it came from.”

So Louise, 39, set herself the challenge of only eating meat she’d killed for a year.

Although she expected her friends and family to be disgusted, she was surprised by their response.

“I thought people would be horrified but they were fascinated,” says Louise, who lives in Edinburgh.

In July 2014, she travelled to Hamels Park, Hertfordshire, to meet a gamekeeper who would show her how to kill a rabbit.

“I started with a rabbit because rabbit populations are managed by gamekeepers anyway to help other wildlife thrive.”

After teaching her how to aim and shoot, Louise was driven to a meadow.

Yet as she got the creature in her sights, she started to have second thoughts.

“My heart was thumping but I pulled the trigger. Then I felt like I’d done something horribly wrong and asked myself what I was trying to prove by starting this project.”

Afterwards, Louise says she felt very shaken.

Learning to fish in a Scottish loch was one of the hunting methods Louise tried her hand at

“It was very emotional because I had to take responsibility for the death of an animal.”

Despite her initial reservations, she was determined to carry on and the following day went oyster fishing on the Essex coast.

That night she served her friends oysters which she had caught herself.

“In Britain we’re lucky to live on an island surrounded by amazing seafood, so I wanted to find out more about it. And it didn’t involve shooting, which was a bonus.”

Next, Louise learned to fish in a Scottish loch and caught and killed a lobster.

It wasn’t long before she started to enjoy sourcing her own food.

“Every time I brought meat to the table that I’d sourced myself I felt enormous pride. It was also fun to tell my friends and family the story of where it came from.”

Her quest gave her a new respect for the British countryside.

“I tried to explore different areas of Britain because I think food connects us to the landscape around us. It forces you to appreciate the wildlife around you, especially when you’re fishing because you have to take your time.”

Louise completed her challenge and says she gained a lot from her experiences.

“I learned a lot about myself and I felt braver. I also met some amazing people along the way, such as the gamekeeper who taught me to shoot and the farmers.”

Louise says her experiences have changed the way she eats for good.

Although she no longer kills the meat she consumes herself, she now eats a mainly plant-based diet and only buys meat from farm shops.

“I’ve carried on trying to learn about where my meat comes from but it’s a lifetime’s work really.

“Killing my own meat affected me emotionally and psychologically but hopefully other people can learn from my experiences.”

The discount store won ‘Drinks Retailer of the Year’ at the Drinks Business Awards, an event designed to recognise the best performers across the international drinks industry.

The store beat competition from Waitrose and online drinks retailer Master of Malt in the ‘Drinks Retailer of the Year’ category at the awards ceremony at the London Wine Fair last night.

Aldi, which became the UK’s fifth biggest supermarket, overtaking The Co-op in January, was praised for its drink offering in store over the last year.

A Drinks Business spokesman said: “We saw some amazing entries into the Drinks Business Awards this year and the standard was very high.

“Aldi successfully answered all of our criteria and were without a doubt this year’s Drinks Retailer of the Year.”

Judged by a panel of industry experts, the award follows a successful year so far for Aldi.

The retailer was named ‘Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year’ by the Drinks Retailing Awards and also won 41 medals at the International Wine Challenge last week.

Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, said: “Customers don’t just have to rely on boutique wine stores for quality drinks nowadays.

“At Aldi, we make it easy for our customers to shop for quality, award-winning products that won’t break the bank.

“We have a concise range of beers, wines and spirits on offer.
