The Mayor of the French city of Beauvais, Caroline Cayeux, has apologized for a “communication error” after an ill-judged April Fools’ Day joke announcing the construction of new IKEA superstore.

“This is excellent news for the dynamism and employment prospects of Beauvais,” wrote the center-right mayor of the commune, which is located 50 kilometers north of Paris, next to a mockup of what she said would be a 13,000-square-meter store, in simultaneous posts on Facebook and Twitter. “All fans of the brand will also appreciate not having to take miles to Lille, Rouen or the Paris region to shop at IKEA.”

Cayeux, 69, who has a robust social media presence and about 10,000 fans on Twitter, wrote that Beauvais “beat off competition from other French cities,” for which she “congratulates herself.”

The joke was initially too deadpan for some, with several excited residents offering gratitude and writing “very good news.” But as Cayeux was forced to explain that this was an April Fools’ Day post to the more trusting followers, merriment soon turned to anger.

“What a joke! I leave my hometown in a week, because impossible to find a job here,” wrote Twitter user XavierL. (Cayeux responded with a “sad face” emoticon).

“Yeah, It’s funny to make Beauvaisians believe in a new source of employment,” wrote Julien.

“So the dynamism of the city and employment in Beauvais is a joke?” posted Johan Depestel on Facebook. “It’s like saying ‘We’ll make sure the homeless have a roof over their heads all year round…. but no, it’s a joke’ or ‘We’ll upgrade our security systems so that the streets of Beauvais are safer… but no, it’s a joke…’”

“We will all vote for you in the next election… joke,” ArMelo wrote on Twitter.

As the blowback made the rounds on national media, Cayeux noted that her department produces an April Fools’ Day post every year, but apologized and admitted that the choice of topic was “unwise.” She has decided not to delete the original post and has personally contacted IKEA with an investment proposal, which, in her words, the company responded to by saying that it only opens stores in large cities.

Black Mirror, the cynical and twisted technology-centric anthology show that’s as addictive as it is emotionally numbing, is returning to Netflix with its fourth season. At some point. No official release date has been set yet, but the first trailer has arrived, teasing six new stories of science fiction, horror, and bad decisions being amplified by technology bringing out the worst in humanity.

And yes, that is Friday Night Lights, Breaking Bad, and Fargo star Jesse Plemons on the bridge of some kind of Star Trek-esque spaceship. At the very least, the Black Mirror season 4 trailer is promising a batch of stories that are going to tread on some fresh turf.

The trailer doesn’t feature any story details or dialogue, but it does reveal the titles of the six episodes that comprise the new season: “Crocodile,” “Arkangel,” “Hang the DJ,” “USS Callister,” “Metalhead,” and “Black Museum.” Naturally, each title is accompanied by people looking like they’re in emotional distress and in the process of making poor decisions. Oh, and there’s a giant robot. And a spaceship.

Although it hasn’t been confirmed which director is helming which episode, we know that the line-up this year includes the likes of Jodie Foster, David Slade, and John Hillcoat. It’s Hillcoat whose involvement intrigues me the most, only because the director of The Proposition and The Road entering the world of Black Mirror suggests one the bleakest hours of television, well, ever.

However, it’s the footage from “USS Callister” that has my attention at the moment, mainly because it looks completely different from every episode of Black Mirror we’ve seen so far. Either the show is boldly going further into the future than it ever has before or it’s a story set within some kind of Star Trek-inspired virtual reality game. A game that will surely doom everyone playing it. Also: the eternally great Jesse Plemons. That’s more than enough.

One episode we do know a little bit about is “Black Museum,” because magician and writer Penn Jillette revealed a few months ago that one of his unpublished short stories will figure into the episode. Long story short (you can read the whole thing here), Jillette once wrote a story called “The Pain Addict,” about a device that lets doctors feel the pain of their patients, and Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker scooped it up for use in an episode that would tell a series of smaller stories connected with a framing device, much like the unforgettable “White Christmas” episode. Here’s more:

And then two years later, [Brooker] started calling me up a lot and for the [finale] of the next Black Mirror, they’re doing a thing called “Black Museum,” which is three stories tied together as one, like they did with “White Christmas.” We went back and forth. Charlie Brooker writes everything. There wasn’t a chance of me actually typing. I sent him my short story. We brainstormed for a few hours. It ended up being that the whole story was framed by a carnie in Vegas who has a museum that includes the helmet that was worn by the original pain addict. He’s telling the story to a young woman who was at the museum. He’s this washed-up carnie guy, 20 miles outside of Vegas, running his little museum there.

Black Mirror season 4 doesn’t have a release date, but Netflix promises that the season is coming soon.

Never mind that sneaky bunny. The Easter egg—the term for secret design elements, entertaining features, or even surprise functional items—has hatched a life of its own in popular culture. And while it might have started in the world of video games and software, it’s not tremendously surprising that Silicon Valley–based automaker Tesla, with its exclusive software and over-the-air updates, has loaded its vehicles up with quite a few.

CEO Elon Musk today teased, via Twitter, that a feature would be coming soon allowing access to “discovered Tesla Easter eggs”—a virtual Easter basket of sorts. He’s also implying, of course, that there are other as yet undiscovered eggs.

The most recent of such hidden (discovered) treasures is a sketch pad, revealed last week via a tweet from Musk, as version 8.1 of Tesla’s software  started to roll out to vehicles. Three taps to the top portion of the screen accesses the sketch pad as a new application tile—and the app allows users to submit their art to Tesla.

This past year, Tesla also packaged a holiday show for Model X owners that, after password input, brought not just dazzling lights but a “dance” of that model’s gullwing doors. For Model S owners with the air suspension package, it packaged a nod to James Bond, in which entering “007” would conjure an onscreen likeness of the car that CEO Elon Musk bought, the Lotus Esprit submarine car from The Spy Who Loved Me—and the car would adjust its ride height according to your selected “dive depth.”

Not all the Tesla Easter eggs are superficial amusement. Some consider the Ludicrous Plus mode accessible in P100D versions to be one, as it requires an elaborate sequence of steps to enable (and then warns against “accelerated” [pun likely intended] wear to the motor, gearbox, and battery).

It’s not just Tesla, of course. Subtle branding aside, automakers are finding ever more whimsy in some of the minor points—by hiding secret Easter-egg design cues where you might not expect them. We found more than 30 of them in the Jeep Renegade, for instance; Hyundai hid a Blue Max video game in its Veloster; and Volvo snuck a spider graphic into the back of the XC90. Grownups like finding hidden gems, too.
