The Beauvais Missal was said to be genuine by professors Megan Cook and Lisa Fagin Davis.

  • A shopper got a surprise when he picked up a 700-year-old script for $ 75, per the Maine Monitor.
  • Academic Lisa Fagin Davis confirmed the piece was genuine, and could be worth up to $ 10,000.
  • Will Sideri, who bought the script, told the Maine Monitor he doesn't intend to sell the document.

A bargain hunter spent just $ 75 on a medieval script at a yard sale that could be worth as much as $ 10,000.

The Maine Monitor reported last week that Will Sideri picked up the 700-year-old document at an estate sale in Maine after noticing the leaf adorned in Latin writing alongside some musical notes.

The Associated Press reported that Sideri was initially in the market for a "KitchenAid mixer, a bookshelf or vintage clothing" at the estate sale, but ended up spending $ 75 on the manuscript labelled: "1285 AD. Illuminated manuscript on vellum. $ 75.''

Sideri messaged Megan Cook, an English professor at Colby College who used to teach him, to ask if it was real. Cook got in touch with fellow academic Lisa Fagin Davis, who determined within a few hours that the photo was genuine, per the Monitor.

What's more, Davis said it could be worth up to $ 10,000. An expert on manuscripts confirmed the valuation to the AP.

Davis, a Simmons University professor, told Insider in an email: "Leaves of the Beauvais Missal measure around 295 x 205 mm and have 15 or 21 lines of text, or ten staves of music, in two columns.

"An estate sale in Maine isn't even the most unexpected place where a Beauvais Missal leaf has turned up. Will's leaf is, however, the least expensive leaf sold in recent memory. The most expensive was sold a few years ago for $ 10,000," she said.

Davis, who is also executive director of the Medieval Academy of America, said the script appeared to be from the Beauvais Missal, used in the Beauvais Cathedral in France, that dated back to the late 13th century. It was likely used in Roman Catholic worship.

The academic told the Monitor that newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst, said to be the inspiration for the film Citizen Kane, once owned the script before selling it in 1942.

Davis has written extensively on the Beauvais Missal, and told the Monitor individual scripts were likely torn out of a larger book by art dealers, much to the chagrin of academics.

Despite knowing its true value, Sideri told the Monitor he doesn't intend to sell the script, and has handed it over to his parents for safe keeping while he moves home.

"This is something at the end of the day that I know is cool," he told the AP. "I didn't buy this expecting to sell it."

It is rare, but not unheard of, for the true value of a historic piece of art to go awry over time. In 2018, Laura Young bought a Roman Bust at a Goodwill in Austin for $ 34.99. It turned out to be a genuine 2,000-year-old relic, and was arranged to be returned to its rightful owners in Germany.

We want to hear from Scotland Yard, not media reports on Skripals’ case – Russian envoy to UK https://briefnews.eu/we-want-to-hear-from-scotland-yard-not-media-reports-on-skripals-case-russian-envoy-to-uk/ https://briefnews.eu/we-want-to-hear-from-scotland-yard-not-media-reports-on-skripals-case-russian-envoy-to-uk/#respond Thu, 19 Jul 2018 12:03:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/we-want-to-hear-from-scotland-yard-not-media-reports-on-skripals-case-russian-envoy-to-uk/ Moscow is waiting for any official statement on the Skripal attack suspects, Russian ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, has said in the wake of media reports that police identified some “Russians” as the culprits.

On Thursday, the Press Association reported that British investigators believe they identified “the suspected perpetrators” of the March poisoning of ex-double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter in Salisbury. After analyzing CCTV footage, they reportedly came to the conclusion that some “Russians” are involved in the attack.

Commenting on the media claims, the Russian envoy said that official London remains silent on the issue, stressing that media reports often fail to find any confirmation.

“These are media reports, unfortunately there are no official statements from the British side. I want to hear from Scotland Yard, from the Foreign Office. Many versions [published] in the newspapers are not confirmed on the official level,” Yakovenko told journalists in Moscow.

The envoy also warned that Moscow “will exert pressure” on London, including through official requests and dialogue, over the Skripal case, as it is “a political issue.” He also plans to discuss the issue during the meeting with the UK’s new foreign minister, Jeremy Hunt.

The Skripal case was not on the agenda during the recent Putin-Trump summit in Helsinki as London failed to provide evidence not only to Russia, but even to its allies, Yakovenko noted.

“If the British had managed to provide any official information regarding the ongoing investigation, it might have been a topic for [Trump-Putin] discussion,” the envoy said. “But because the British side still does not provide anything to the Russian side, and moreover, presented nothing to its allies, then what is there to actually discuss?”

Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned by a nerve agent in Salisbury in March. In late June, a British couple, Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess, were exposed to the same substance in the town of Amesbury, around 12km from Salisbury. After Sturgess died on June 8, the Russian embassy in the UK said that a leak at the Porton Down chemical laboratory, located some 8km from both Salisbury and Amesbury, might be to blame for the incidents.

The UK authorities have pointed a finger at Moscow for the Skripals’ poisoning since March, while still failing to present any evidence. Russia has repeatedly denied any involvement in the attack, asking to share the data on the incident, but still has received nothing but allegations so far.

Scotland Yard holds emergency meeting as London murder toll reaches 55 https://briefnews.eu/scotland-yard-holds-emergency-meeting-as-london-murder-toll-reaches-55/ https://briefnews.eu/scotland-yard-holds-emergency-meeting-as-london-murder-toll-reaches-55/#respond Fri, 06 Apr 2018 14:01:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/scotland-yard-holds-emergency-meeting-as-london-murder-toll-reaches-55/ Scotland Yard has called an emergency meeting as London is gripped by an “exceptionally high level” of crime. It comes as an ex-senior officer says “police have lost control of the streets.”

Community and youth workers have been invited to the Metropolitan Police headquarters, Scotland Yard, as London’s murder investigations rose to 55 this year alone. Two people were killed just this week in the east London borough of Hackney, while another six were taken to hospital on Thursday after being injured in knife attacks.

Among those attending the meeting will be Labour MP for Tottenham David Lammy, who recently spoke out to say police are “vanishing” from the streets of the capital, and Nicola Calica-Myall, an activist against knife crime whose son survived after being stabbed 37 times at the age of 17.

“It’s important to know that our fears as a community are being recognized and things are in place,” Calica-Myall said, according to the Guardian. “It’s everybody’s problem and more Londoners need to recognize this situation may not go away any time soon.”

It comes as the former head of diversity and policing in Tottenham, Victor Olisa, warned that police are losing control of public spaces and hit out at senior officials for their “deafening silence.”

“Communities are saying we don’t see the police around anymore,” he said. “It appears to people I have spoken to as though the police have lost control of public spaces and the streets,” the Guardian reports. “The silence from senior officers in the Met is deafening. They should say we need more information from the public, this is what we are doing, this is what the results are.”

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Cressida Dick has tried to take control of the spate of violence by pledging to adopt ‘Al Capone’ tactics to deter potential criminals and take violent offenders off the streets “for any crime.” She added a further 120 officers will be deployed to tackle organized crime, apparently in addition to the 80-member Operation Sceptre anti-knife unit launched last May.

However, Olisa said that wider cuts were making police officers’ jobs harder.“You don’t have as many officers available to patrol or spend time in public spaces as you did five years ago. There is less time to build conversation lines so you can get information back.”

'Faster Son' Yamaha XSR700 by Greg Hageman adds to Yard Built Garage https://briefnews.eu/faster-son-yamaha-xsr700-by-greg-hageman-adds-to-yard-built-garage/ https://briefnews.eu/faster-son-yamaha-xsr700-by-greg-hageman-adds-to-yard-built-garage/#respond Sat, 16 Dec 2017 19:54:00 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/faster-son-yamaha-xsr700-by-greg-hageman-adds-to-yard-built-garage/

Yamaha’s Yard Built Garage has so far welcomed sixty builds by professional custom builders, two-wheeled spectacles ranging from the “Eau Rouge” XJR13000 to the “Gibbonslap” SR400. The latest addition comes from Iowa-based builder Greg Hageman, a Yamaha specialist, who unveiled a reworked XSR700 as one of the “Faster Sons” – modern Yamaha bikes invoking spirits of their pasts. The modern bike pays its respects to the motorcycle Hageman began his customizing career with more than a decade ago, the “Fast Father” 1972 Yamaha XS650.

In the early 2000s, Hageman’s idea for the ancestor XS650 was upping the performance. MikeXS rebuilt the 50-horsepower, four-stroke engine and installed Mikuni carbs, electric ignition, and a permanent magnet alternator with a lithium battery to power LED lights. Hageman installed a Yamaha R6 front end, and a modified rear swingarm from a Yamaha SR500 out back. He relaced the stock hubs with stainless steel spokes riding on Shinko radials, bolted on a custom tuck-and-roll seat, and upgraded the cockpit with a Speedhut GPS speedometer.

Hageman’s saw his mission with the modern XS700 as “taking something that’s modern, new and fresh, and connecting it to its roots.” Beyond that, he stuck to retro cues that an amateur could add to his own bike; hence, no $ 3,000 custom-spoked wheels. However, the Faster Son does get lower handlebars on lower-profile Yamaha Virago risers, a seven-inch LED headlight with turn signals to match the Fast Father, retro fork gaiters clasping a sculpted front fender, and silver powdercoated wheels on Shinko radials. A tuck-and-roll seat welcomes the driver, a rear rack welcomes his luggage. The only powertrain modification is an Akropovic exhaust. Classic Yamaha badges, a striped tank color-matched to the 1972 hue on the XSR650, and a matching Bell helmet cement the ties between past and present. Check out the story of the bike in the video above.

Generally when cleaning out one’s freezer, it is advisable to get rid of any unidentifiable objects. Not so if one is a microbiologist. In that case, it is advisable to carefully label the specimen with as much information as possible about the environment from which it was collected.

It’s a good thing that the world’s amateur microbiologists had freezers full of such specimens, because in 2010 the Earth Microbiome Project sent out a call (I think they shined a micrograph of a Staphylococcus aureus on the clouds or something). The call was for everyone to send in said specimens for a global analysis. And microbiologists from all seven continents, spanning forty-three countries and seventeen different environments, did just that.

The composition of microbial communities from environments ranging from the Sargasso Sea to our guts has already been studied. Trouble is, each sample type and region has been studied in isolation, making it difficult to extrapolate general rules or patterns as to what may dictate the composition of each community. Findings have been reported on the effects of temperature, pH, salinity, oxygen levels, and even day length on microbial community composition, but they cannot be globally applied because the samples were analyzed by different people at different times in different places in different ways.

Apple Tree Yard author Louise Doughty 'penning sequel' to BBC hit https://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-author-louise-doughty-penning-sequel-to-bbc-hit/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-author-louise-doughty-penning-sequel-to-bbc-hit/#respond Tue, 07 Feb 2017 09:24:28 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-author-louise-doughty-penning-sequel-to-bbc-hit/

The powerful drama, starring Emily Watson in the lead role, has prompted a strong response from viewers because of its shocking rape scenes.

However, after gaining an audience of over six million each episode, the BBC is keen to plan a sequel.

A source told The Sun: “Apple Tree Yard has proven to be a real hit, despite the early outrage over all the sex and the brutal rape scene in the opening episode.”

“BBC chiefs are also particularly keen to do a follow-up to the debut series, given the popularity of the show and the conversation it’s generated,” the insider added.

They concluded by teasing what could come from a follow-up, hinting: “Louise has never steered clear of controversial or difficult topics so it’s sure the sequel will be just as powerful and harrowing as the first.”

The author has already hinted to her followers on Twitter that she has plans for a follow-up book.

When asked if a sequel would be possible, Louise tweeted: “Sort of… and all very hush-hush (no-one’s listening, are they?)”

When another suggested that Louise should write a follow-up, the author teased: “Funny you should say that…”

The book has been just as successful as the show, having risen as high as second place in some book charts.

It is unknown exactly what will be the focus of the sequel, but Louise has hinted that the book could explore the death of Yvonne’s rapist, George Selway (Steven Elder).

The last episode aired last night and saw Yvonne’s lover sent to prison for manslaughter.

In a shocking twist, it was revealed to the audience that it was, in fact, the scientist who asked Mark (Ben Chaplin) to kill her rapist.

Apple Tree Yard finale praised as viewers blast court system’s treatment of rape victims https://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-finale-praised-as-viewers-blast-court-systems-treatment-of-rape-victims/ https://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-finale-praised-as-viewers-blast-court-systems-treatment-of-rape-victims/#respond Mon, 06 Feb 2017 23:27:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/apple-tree-yard-finale-praised-as-viewers-blast-court-systems-treatment-of-rape-victims/

In the first episode of the four-part thriller, Yvonne (played by Emily Watson) was sexually assaulted by a co-worker, who was later murdered by her lover Mark Costly (Ben Chaplin).

As she stood trial accused of murder, she was asked by Mark’s defence barrister to recount the details of her attack.

However, all throughout her testimony the barrister sought to cast doubt on the rape claim and suggested Yvonne was sexually promiscuous because she had once made a joke about being “easy”.

“You are trying to create a false impression of the kind of relationship that we had. This is why I didn’t want to bring this to court in the first place,” Yvonne cried.

Just 15 per cent of people who have experienced sexual violence choose to report it to the police and only 5.7 per cent of reported rape cases end in a conviction for the perpetrator, according to Rape Crisis England and Wales.

Those watching at home praised the show for bringing an important issue to light.

One social media user said: “Horrendous victim blaming in #AppleTreeYard No wonder rape isn’t reported. Brilliant stuff from Emily Watson though.”

“This tv programme shows you why women don’t go to the police about rape #AppleTreeYard,” another added.

Someone else agreed, tweeting: “Firstly, what a complete S*** Mark is. And sadly so very believable. Secondly it’s no wonder so many women don’t report rape #AppleTreeYard.”

A fourth said: “To see the portrayal of the victim blaming shown in #appletreeyard highlights EXACTLY why people aren’t confident to report rape/ assault.”

Details of organisations offering information and support with sexual abuse are available at the BBC Action Line
