In the following episode, Betty got her own chance to make it to Yale after finding out the reason she was rejected was that her father is the Black Hood.

As Betty, Veronica (Camila Mendes), Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Toni (Vanessa Morgan) reach the Quiz Show finals against Stonewall Prep, a Yale recruiter offers Betty a place at the college if her team wins.

Her mother Alice wants to ensure her the win and hands her the answers, which Betty tears up.

Brett however collects the pieces and plants them into Betty’s room so she can be branded a cheater and lose her spot at Yale.

  • Several of Brett Kavanaugh’s Yale colleagues who endorsed his confirmation to the Supreme Court are now calling for an investigation into the sexual assault accusations he’s facing.
  • Kent Sinclair, Douglas Rutzen and Mark Osler, all signed an August 27 letter from Yale Law School alumni to the Senate Judiciary Committee defending Kavanaugh’s character.
  • Kavanaugh is set to testify with Dr. Christine Blasey Ford on Thursday. Ford has accused Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both teenagers in the 1980s.

Several of Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s Yale colleagues who signed a letter publicly endorsing his nomination to the Supreme Court in August, are now voicing their support for an investigation into sexual assault accusations made against him.

Kent Sinclair, Douglas Rutzen and Mark Osler, were among nearly 25 of Kavanaugh’s law school classmates who signed a letter August 27 to the Senate Judiciary Committee, praising Kavanaugh’s former judiciary accomplishments in support of his confirmation to the nation’s highest court.

You’d think the Nest x Yale Lock would support Google Assistant from the outset given its pedigree, but not so — you’ve had to use the app. It’s finally here, though. As of August 29th, you can use Google Assistant to control the Nest x Yale Lock with your voice. You can lock the door or check its status whether or not you’re at home, including as part of Assistant’s Routines. If you’re ready to pack it in for the night, you can lock the door as you’re shutting off the lights.

The feature works on both smartphones as well as Assistant-equipped smart speakers like the Google Home series. There’s no mention of unlocking (probably for the best given the security risks), but this might be ideal if you’d rather not pull out your phone just to be sure the door really is locked.

A Yale psychologist reveals the simple trick he used to finally quit drinking for good https://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologist-reveals-the-simple-trick-he-used-to-finally-quit-drinking-for-good/ https://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologist-reveals-the-simple-trick-he-used-to-finally-quit-drinking-for-good/#respond Sat, 06 Jan 2018 17:33:14 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologist-reveals-the-simple-trick-he-used-to-finally-quit-drinking-for-good/ WineGetty Images/Justin Sullivan

  • Psychologists agree that behavior change is hard.
  • Replacing an old habit with a new one can help your brain break out of unwanted patterns.
  • A psychologist at Yale once made a simple change to his evening routine that helped him quit drinking for good.

Humans are creatures of routine.

Scientists agree that about 40% of what we do every day is thoughtless. There’s a term for the actions triggered by daily, repetitive situational cues: habits. The more practice you have doing something, the less effort it takes. That’s how our actions become more efficient and require less mental energy, enabling us to avoid reasoning through every moment and action of the day.

Habits change how our brain works, shifting activity from areas of the brain connected to decision-making and memory like the prefrontal cortex, to unconscious patterns of cue and response that operate out of our awareness.

Yale psychologist John Bargh told Business Insider that about 15 years ago, he got tired of one of his own habitual behaviors: having an end-of-day drink.

“I was a functional drinker” Bargh said, “but I wanted to change.”

The tipping point, as he writes in his new book, “Before You Know It,” was a long drive home from Tennessee to New York. Bargh hopped in the car at 8:30 that morning and told everyone that he planned to complete the 900-mile journey in 12 hours flat — a fun, speed demon’s challenge.

When he rolled triumphantly into town around 8:30 p.m., he headed straight to the local liquor store to grab a bottle of wine before the shop closed at 9.

“That night as I was having a glass of the wine I had just bought, it dawned on me why I had been so determined to get home by 8:30,” he wrote in his book. He realized in that moment how powerful his drinking habit had become — it was strong enough to change his daily actions without any conscience effort on his part.

“When I realized the real reason I wanted to get back by 8:30, the power of my need to have something to drink that weekend, I was somewhat shocked,” he wrote.

What Bargh doesn’t reveal in his book is the simple behavioral trick that helped him quit drinking and stay sober for over 15 years.

He did the traditional liquor cabinet purge, but something else actually made the difference: “Tootsie Pops got me through it” he said.

Every time Bargh wanted to reach for a drink (and there were many, especially in those first weeks), he sucked on a lollipop instead. It wasn’t a punitive move — behavior changes that are rooted in fear and regret don’t typically work. Instead, he was indulging in a little sugar high and having some fun. He got the idea from a friend who suggested that his wine-drinking habit might be, in part, a sugar craving.

“I substituted something else to do with my hands and my mouth instead of drinking,” Bargh said.

He even incorporated a new game for his cat into the change.

“I’d wad up the wrapper and toss it, and my cat was like Derek Jeter,” batting the little papers around, he said.

It can take anywhere from a couple weeks to more than 250 days to form a new habit. But as habit expert Wendy Wood from the University of Southern California says, “it’s easier to maintain the behavior if it’s repeated in a specific context.”

Switch a concrete, time-triggered old habit for a new ritual, and you won’t have to rely so much on self-control and will power to achieve your goal. It becomes automatic.

After about eight years of the sugary pops, Bargh eventually gave them up. He just didn’t want them any more. And now, he said, he doesn’t really need to swap anything in for his former evening drink.

“It’s not like I have to resist temptation,” he says.

It’s just a habit.

Bitcoin is a ‘dangerous speculative bubble’ – Yale expert https://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-is-a-dangerous-speculative-bubble-yale-expert/ https://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-is-a-dangerous-speculative-bubble-yale-expert/#respond Tue, 05 Dec 2017 13:33:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bitcoin-is-a-dangerous-speculative-bubble-yale-expert/

The bitcoin buying frenzy is a ‘toxic concept for investors,’ according to Stephen Roach, who’s described by Yale Univesity as one of Wall Street’s most influential economists.

“This is a dangerous speculative bubble by any shadow or stretch of the imagination,” Roach told CNBC.

The Yale University senior fellow and former Asia chairman and chief economist at investment bank Morgan Stanley, Roach said he’s “never seen a chart of a security where the price really has a vertical pattern to it.”

“And bitcoin is the most vertical of any pattern I’ve ever seen in my career.”

The economist has suggested that exchange legitimization makes the digital currency “somewhat dangerous” for investors, given what he described as a “lack of intrinsic underlying economic value to the concept.”

Major exchanges, including the CME and CBOE, have recently legitimized the currency’s investment credentials, saying they plan to introduce futures contracts to their respective exchanges.

Talking about bitcoin and the blockchain technology which underpins its existence, Roach said “like all bubbles, they burst.” He added “they go down, and the one who’s made the last investment gets hurt the most, there’s no question about it.”

Bitcoin has been smashing symbolic price barriers every few days, recently hit another all-time high of $ 11,900 on Tuesday. The cryptocurrency’s market cap is close to $ 200 billion.

A Yale psychologist’s simple thought experiment temporarily turned conservatives into liberals https://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologists-simple-thought-experiment-temporarily-turned-conservatives-into-liberals/ https://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologists-simple-thought-experiment-temporarily-turned-conservatives-into-liberals/#respond Sun, 22 Oct 2017 18:13:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/a-yale-psychologists-simple-thought-experiment-temporarily-turned-conservatives-into-liberals/ trump supportersThomson Reuters

  • Social scientists say conservative political views can be fueled by fear.
  • A new study suggests that making people feel safe from harm can change their stance on hot-button social issues.
  • The new research gives insight into the role of the unconscious mind in the voting booth.

Social scientists have long known how to turn liberals into conservatives in the lab — all they have to do is scare them.

“Research has shown that you can make liberals more conservative by threatening them and making them somewhat afraid,” Yale psychology professor John Bargh writes in his new book, “Before You Know It: The Unconscious Reasons We Do What We Do,” which was released Tuesday.

Several studies have shown that when social scientists get liberal-leaning experiment subjects to think about their own deaths or make them feel threatened, some left-wingers adopt more conservative values. This phenomenon played out after 9/11 — researchers found that there was a “very strong conservative shift” in the US after the attacks, with more liberals supporting Republican President George W. Bush and favoring increases in military spending.

The hypothesis social scientists developed about this effect is perhaps best summed up in a 2003 review of research on the subject: “People embrace political conservatism (at least in part) because it serves to reduce fear, anxiety, and uncertainty; to avoid change, disruption, and ambiguity; and to explain, order, and justify inequality among groups and individuals,” it said.

There’s evidence that this fear plays out in how conservative and liberal brains are shaped, too. Researchers have taken brain images of people with different political leanings and found that those who self-identify as conservative have larger and more active right amygdalas, an area of the brain associated with the expression and processing of fear. A 2011 study looked at MRI scans of self-described conservative young adults and found they had more grey matter volume in the right amygdala than their liberal counterparts. In 2013, another team of scientists expanded that research to show that conservatives generally have more activity in their right amygdala when taking risks than liberals do.

But while inducing fear might shift a liberal mindset, conservatives have generally been more difficult for social scientists to sway in experiments — until now.

In his new book, Bargh details two separate experiments that he conducted with his colleagues that swayed folks who identified as conservative to express more liberal attitudes.

How They Did It

The researchers behind the psychology experiment told a group of participants to imagine that they’d been granted a superpower by a magic genie and were suddenly as invincible as Superman — bullets bounced off them, fire couldn’t scorch their skin, and “a fall from a cliff wouldn’t hurt at all,” Bargh writes in his book. The study’s control group was simply told to imagine they could fly.

Then the researchers asked the participants to weigh in on some political statements, including whether they “would be reluctant to make any large-scale changes to the social order,” and whether “it’s okay if some groups have more of a chance in life than others.”

Liberal participants’ attitudes on social issues didn’t shift at all. The conservative participants, on the other hand, started adopting more liberal views on social issues (though not economic ones.)

Participants who imagined themselves with the ability to fly had no change in their political views.

The study authors say this is some of the first experimental evidence that making people feel completely safe can (temporarily) change their politics and make them more liberal.

What Else Are We Doing Unconsciously?

Bargh argues in his book that these results are but one example of the way humans are still living with the “hard-won lessons” of evolution.

“The fundamental drive for physical safety is a powerful legacy of our evolutionary past” he writes. “It exerts a pervasive influence on the mind as it navigates and responds to modern life, often in surprising ways — like who you vote for.”

Bargh’s book suggests that a myriad of unconscious influences impact our everyday decisions. Holding a cup of piping hot coffee can make us friendlier, he suggests, becuase the association between physical warmth and social warmth is something we learned unconsciously as infants when we were held close to a loved one’s warm chest.

In another study, Bargh showed how washing hands with soap and water can make people less hostile to individuals who are different than they are. Bargh says that’s because to some extent, our modern prejudices are shaped by the way we’ve evolved to avoid unknown, foreign threats like disease.

In general, Bargh writes, people “don’t fully understand why we do what we do all of the time.”

“We have one mind, and it can operate consciously and unconsciously,” he told Business Insider. But Bargh says that’s generally not a bad thing. He believes the unconscious forces at play are generally “on our side,” since they help us get through the day without needing to reason through every decision we make.

Smart-lock outfit Yale’s parent company is buying August Home, in a move that may consolidate some of the smart lock market. Sweden-based Assa Abloy will pick up August Home for a cool $ 60 million, and the regulatory bodies involved are expected to approve the purchase by year’s end. “August Home strengthens our residential smart door strategy with complementary smart locks, expansion into video doorbells and comprehensive solutions for home delivery,” ASSA’s executive vice president Thanasis Molokotos said in a statement.

“We have always admired the design and quality of Yale locks,” August CEO Jason Johnson said in a press release. “This is a great opportunity for us to work with the world’s largest lock and access company.”

While this might be good news for August, customers now have to deal with a potential oligopoly where a few firms control the entire space and innovations therein.
