Last year Jackman bowed out as Wolverine in Logan after almost 20 years in the role. However since then Deadpool star Reynolds has been lobbying the Aussie actor for a big return. And now the biggest hint ever that Wolverine will be returning for the X-Force movie occurred at San Diego Comic Con. During a panel promoting Deadpool 2: The Super Duper Cut, an extended version of the end credits scene was screened. Fans will remember Deadpool travel back in time to X-Men Origins: Wolverine to assassination the other version of his character from the not so fondly remember superhero movie. And all the while Jackman’s Wolverine was looking on – from old footage – but this time another line was added. According to Movie Web the extended clip saw Deadpool say “I love you” to Wolverine. And then added: “One day your old pal Wade’s gonna ask you to get back in the saddle again. When he does, say yes.” If that’s not a teaser that Wolverine will be turning up in the X-Force movie, as he does in the comics, then we don’t know what is. To add to this Reynolds once again reiterated that he wanted Wolverine to return to team up with Deadpool. At the panel he told fans: “You never know.” Speaking with TMZ, Jackman said: “Ship has sailed Ryan. Sorry brother.” The Wolverine star was also asked on GMA and said: “Ryan…back it up a little. “Play a little hard to get. It’s too much. It’s not sexy.” Of course the other option is that another actor will play Wolverine in the X-Force movie, that is unless Jackman is playing it coy.

20th Century Fox is developing an X-Force film that’s going to be written and directed by The Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard, and while making the press rounds to promote his next movie (a small crime thriller called Bad Times at the El Royale), Goddard has revealed his approach to tackling the superhero sequel. Read about his reaction to Deadpool 2‘s big twist, how he’ll handle the fallout of that film, and more in this X-Force movie update.
Warning: spoilers for Deadpool 2 below.
In a new interview, Goddard – who served as a script consultant on Deadpool 2 – told Entertainment Weekly about his first reaction to the scene in the movie in which a significant percentage of the newly-formed X-Force squad are promptly killed off just seconds into their first mission. You might think he’d be a bit miffed at having a lot of his cast ripped away before he had a chance to make a movie with them, but he says he loved the movie’s “sense of surprise and danger”.
“To be honest, I think that’s why it excited me so much. I remember reading that scene and just cackling with delight, specifically because it was the very last thing you’d expect to happen in one of these movies. These movies are so careful to set up the next thing and the next thing, and it made me so happy.
One thing I said to [co-writer and star] Ryan [Reynolds] was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out.’ That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after.”
With some of the team wiped out (except for Rob Delaney‘s regular guy Peter, who was saved in a mid-credits scene), Goddard says the X-Force movie will center around Deadpool, Cable, and Domino. He’s been a fan of those characters since he first read the comics as a kid, and since he says “it’s much more about the characters and my love for them than it is about any plot or story line,” don’t expect an exact adaptation of any particular comic run featuring those characters. “I trust that my love of these three will lead me someplace new,” he said.
I thought Josh Brolin‘s Cable and Zazie Beetz‘s Domino were two of the best parts of Deadpool 2, so while it’s no surprise that they’ll be coming back for more, I’ll be glad to have them as a respite to Deadpool’s zaniness, which is increasingly wearing thin for me in these movies. And even though I wasn’t crazy about Deadpool 2, the good news is that Goddard is great at writing characters – he should be able to navigate the tone of X-Force a bit better than Deadpool 2, which I thought suffered from two conflicting tones: wanting the audience to invest in Deadpool’s relationships with both Vanessa (who was reduced to a ghost in the movie) and the young mutant Russell, while also wanting to keep a zippy, Airplane-like comedic pacing throughout. Fingers crossed Goddard will be able to overcome those tonal mismatches that I found so jarring and make an X-Force film into something a bit more cohesive.

WARNING SPOILERS FOR DEADPOOL 2 AHEAD
Deadpool 2 revealed Josh Brolin as a time-travelling cyborg from the future, bent on preventing the murder of his family.
Cable is heavily armed, but also carries around a damaged teddy bear, which he says is covered in his daughter’s blood.
Later in the film it’s revealed that the boy he’s come back to try and kill is Fire Fist, who grows up to kill his family.
In the end Deadpool managed to get the kid to change his ways, so presumably Cable’s family is now alive in the future.
But just who is his daughter? Well in the comics Cable’s real name is Nathan Summers and his adopted daughter is called Hope.
She was seen as a miracle during a period of no mutant births, which interestingly ties in with the plot of Logan – a film set in 2029.
A group called the Purifiers found out about Hope and wanted her dead, so Cable went into exile through time to raise and train her.
HOW DOES DEADPOOL 2 FIT INTO THE CRAZY X-MEN MOVIE TIMELINE?
Meanwhile the two were chased by Bishop, another time traveller from a post-apocalyptic future, who was last seen on screen in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
Once Hope grew up, she and Cable returned to the present day to assist the X-Men.
While she didn’t appear in Deadpool 2, Cable is living in the present for now as a member of X-Force.
But seeing as she survived in the future thanks to Fire Fist being rehabilitated in the past, it would make sense for a grown-up version of Hope to travel back in time to be reunited with her father.
Hope’s mutant gift is to use the powers of any mutant who is in her vicinity, so perhaps she could harness that of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead – or even Deadpool himself?
X-Force is due in cinemas next year, while Deadpool 3 is also in the pipeline.
Deadpool was a surprise success when Ryan Reynolds successfully introduced the world to the concept of an R-rated, laugh-out-loud comic book movie.
Now that Deadpool 2 is set to enjoy similar success, will there be a Deadpool 3?
Reynolds himself may have downplayed such speculation, but screenwriter Rhett Reese has revealed that discussions should happen at some point in the near future.
“We’ll absolutely be talking about Deadpool 3 at some point,” he said, according to IGN.
“It’ll likely come after X-Force, so it’s gonna be – the can’s gonna be kicked down the road a little bit.
“But I can’t believe we won’t at least talk about it at some point, once Ryan’s had a chance to put down the suit for a few months, and we’ve had a chance to clear our heads.
“Because, I just think, you know, the Iron Man model is probably a good one. So, you get the first two, then you get an ensemble, and then maybe an Iron Man 3, a Deadpool 3, and then maybe another ensemble.
“So, that’s a rough idea, but that may be how it plays out.”
For his part, Reynolds has said to Entertainment Weekly: “I don’t know that there would be a Deadpool 3. I really don’t.
“I feel like the character, in order for him to function properly within his own universe, you need to take everything away from him. I don’t think that you can keep doing that.
“I do see him as being a part of X-Force, obviously. I would love to see him in a team-up sort of thing, like a mano a mano or a great female character from the X-Men universe.”
Deadpool 2 has an 84% score on Rotten Tomatoes and should dethrone Avengers: Infinity War at the box office this weekend.
It also stars Josh Brolin, who explained earlier this week that he was on the verge of turning the role of Cable down.
Deadpool 2 is out now.
Deadpool 2 hasn’t even hit cinemas and attention is already turning to what happens next.
At the end of the trailer , there is a extra meta scene where Deadpool brags to his pal Weasel (TJ Miller): “It lives up to the hype, plus, plus.”
Weasel shoots back: “F*** it, they probably won’t even make a (Deadpool) 3.”
Ryan Reynolds agrees: “Why would they? Stop at two, you’ve killed it.”
Is he serious?
The obvious answer is Deadpool is never serious. However, it is also unclear whether this is a scene from the movie or a special fourth-wall beaking moment for the trailer.
Reynolds has never hidden his plan to spin-off a new X-Force franchise and Deadpool 2 is clearly setting this up. When the Merc With A Mouth rounds up his new team, he makes the X symbol and declares they will be called X-Force.
Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Black Tom Cassidy and Domino are already confirmed and fans are sure they have seen Shatterstar in the trailer.
Cable is traditionally the leader in the comicbooks, once he gets over killing the young boy in the trailer, and actor Josh Brolin confirmed he is contracted for three more movies.
Despite Deadpool’s teasing comments, it looks increasingly certain that Deadpool 3 and X-Force movies are on the horizon.
Deadpool writer Rhett Reese said: “I think we’ll be able to take two paths. [X-Force] is where we’re launching something bigger, but then [Deadpool 3 is] where we’re contracting and staying personal and small.”
The most tantalising prospect of all is the inclusion of Wolverine, who sometimes also leads the team in the comicbooks.

This morning brought a new Deadpool 2 trailer to the web, and with it came the surprise reveal of a new team of mutants who have yet to be seen on the big screen: the X-Force.
In a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, there’s a shot of Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds) standing in the opening of a cargo door on a helicopter…and there are a few other characters standing with him. One of them is Zazie Beetz as Domino, but we’ve never seen the other three characters before, at least not in movie form. So, who are these characters? Let’s pinpoint who’s who when it comes to the X-Force in Deadpool 2.

In Marvel Comics, X-Force is a team of mutants formed by Cable (played by Josh Brolin in Deadpool 2), who basically took the New Mutants and molded them into something new. Domino was part of that team, but she already had a history with Cable in another group of mutant mercenaries called Wild Pack, which later went on to be called Six Pack due to another group being called Wild Pack elsewhere in the Marvel Comics universe.
Clearly, the movie might be taking some liberties with the origins of X-Force, since they’re all teamed up with Deadpool here. But creator Rob Liefeld confirmed on Instagram that this is indeed the X-Force squad in the trailer.
However, there’s a long history and a big roster of members for both X-Force and Wild Pack/Six Pack, with several of them being on both teams. In looking at the characters who might be part of the crew we see int he Deadpool 2 trailer, it appears there might be a mix of X-Force and Six Pack members working with the Merc with a Mouth and his new mutant friend, Domino. The only problem is we’re not entirely sure who each character is, though we have some educated guesses to make.

Eagle-eyed fans noticed that the character standing to the right of Deadpool appears to be Terry Crews (seen above in Expendables 2), and we’re pretty confident in that assessment, too. The question is, who is he playing? The answer is a bit more complicated because there are a few options.

The most popular guess seems to be that Terry Crews is playing George Washington Bridge (or G.W. Bridge). In the comics, Bridge is a former member of Six Pack who later goes on to become a commander at SHIELD. Sometimes, he’s an ally of Deadpool, but he’s also been at odds with the mouthy mercenary as well. However, it’s interesting to note that at one point, Bridge was tasked with capturing Cable when he was believed to be killing SHIELD agents, so it would make sense to have him working with Deadpool against Cable.
If the character in this shot is Bridge, don’t expect to hear anything about him working with SHIELD in this movie since 20th Century Fox isn’t allowed to mention them in their movies (even with the impending purchase of the studio by Disney). However, it wouldn’t be the first time Deadpool snuck some SHIELD mythology into the franchise, since the finale of the first movie took place on an abandoned helicarrier.

Another possible (though seemingly less likely) option is Garrison Kane. This character is white in the comics, but swapping the race out wouldn’t be out of the question. Like G.W. Bridge, Kane was a member of Six Pack, and he might have an axe to grind with Cable.
In the comics, Kane was held hostage by a villain named Stryfe (a clone of Cable) in order to retrieve a disk that Cable had. Cable refused to hand it over, and Kane ended up losing his arms and legs in the battle that followed. He eventually was sent back to the past to have his limbs replaced with cybernetic parts in the Weapon X program.
This doesn’t seem like the best option since there don’t seem to be any cybernetic limbs on the character in this trailer. But of course, Crews could still be playing a version of Kane who doesn’t have those replacement limbs, but still has a troubled history with Cable.

Another mutant who worked with Cable in the Six Pack, Hammer was involved with the same mission that saw Garrison Kane injured, but Cable is even more directly responsible for hurting him. In order to keep the aforementioned data disc in his possession, Cable shot him in the back, leaving him paralyzed.
Hammer later recovered and tried to team up with other Six Pack members to kill Cable. Considering that he’s supposed to be the villain of Deadpool 2, it would stand to reason that he would be around in the trailer.

This option is a little more out of left field, if only because it’s the only character not created by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza. Bedlam arrived later in X-Force’s history, but has a history with Domino, who helped him find his brother. Terry Crews is likely too old to play this character since he’s introduced in his late teens/early 20s, but the X on his tactical shirt does resemble some of the looks Bedlam has had in the comics, and the color scheme works, too.
In addition to Terry Crews in the foreground with Deadpool and Domino, there are two other characters who are a little more obscured. We’re pretty sure we know the identity of one of these characters, but the other one is a little more ambiguous.

We’re pretty sure this is the character we see to the right of Deadpool. While there were several characters from the 1990s run of X-Men comics who had unnecessary headgear, Shatterstar also had big hair that stuck out the top of it and white armor. The character in the shot from the trailer certainly fits that description, and the trailer also features a quick shot of swords that clearly don’t belong to Deadpool.
Shatterstar has a complicated origin involving a temporal paradox, genetic engineering and another dimension called the Mojoverse. We can’t imagine any of that will be mentioned in the movie, but the character is also one of the original members of X-Force, so it only makes sense that he would be part of the first big screen version of the team. Shatterstar’s abilities include sending shockwaves through his swords, teleporting empathically, and other common superhuman traits among mutants.

With Shatterstar likely being part of Deadpool 2, it would make sense if Rictor was the other team member on the helicopter. Rictor is a mutant who once believed Cable was responsible for his father’s death, when in reality it was Cable’s clone Stryfe who was behind it. This eventually led him to team up with X-Force, where he met Shatterstar and struck up a close friendship with the mutant that turned into a secret romance.
Rictor has the ability to manipulate seismic energy, which could come in handy. Plus, one of his signature traits for awhile was a green scarf. And while the character seen to the left of Deadpool above doesn’t have a green scarf, he does have some kind of green accessory in front of the lower half of his face which could stand as a tribute to one of his earliest designs.
If the other character is Rictor, it would be the first time gay superheroes were included in a major comic book movie, which would be pretty cool.

This option doesn’t feel as likely as Rictor, but Solo is a special forces trained teleporter who was hired by G.W. Bridge to join the Six Pack alongside mutants Hammer, Domino, Anaconda and Constrictor to take down Cable. That’s really the only thing that would make him a good fit for that other background character, not to mention the fact that he traditionally wore green tactical gear.

One thing to consider is whether X-Force will even have a big role in the movie. After all, there’s supposed to be an X-Force movie coming in the next few years, and it would be rather surprising to hear of someone like Terry Crews being in Deadpool 2 without any word getting out beforehand. That could indicate that X-Force doesn’t play a big part in the movie.
In fact, it wouldn’t be out of the question for this moment to be nothing more than a cutaway gag to tease fans. You can easily hear Deadpool making some kind of off-hand remark about forming a team and mocking the slow-motion badass walk all superhero groups seem to do in movies. Plus, if it’s just a bit part, that would explain why no spoilers have leaked about these characters being part of the movie.
Deadpool 2 opens on May 18, 2018.

20th Century Fox is moving full steam ahead with the X-Men franchise, and now one of its biggest spinoffs has found a new director. After Kick-Ass 2‘s Jeff Wadlow spent years attached, a new report says that Drew Goddard, the man who directed The Cabin in the Woods, will write and direct the studio’s X-Force team-up film, which will unite characters like Deadpool, Cable, and Domino in a Black Ops group. Watch your back, Suicide Squad.
Deadline broke the news about Goddard’s involvement. This project has been on the studio’s radar for over a year, with The Grey director Joe Carnahan at one point set to write the script. Goddard, who got his start writing TV shows like Buffy, Angel, Alias, and Lost and moved on to the big screen with screenplays for Cloverfield, World War Z, and The Martian, will take over writing duties as well along with leading the production as its director. Simon Kinberg, Lauren Shuler Donner, and Ryan Reynolds will produce.
The X-Force are essentially a dark mirror version of the X-Men. Instead of fighting in the public eye to win mutants respect from regular humans, they tend to embark on darker, more violent, sometimes morally questionable missions to protect mutantkind from threats the X-Men can’t handle. The group has a rotating roster of members in the comics, but the film version is expected to feature the return of Reynolds as Deadpool, Josh Brolin as Cable, and Zazie Beetz as Domino.
It’s unclear which other members are joining up in this movie, but it’s potentially worth noting that there was some talk last year about X-23, the character introduced on the big screen in this year’s Logan, potentially being a part of the squad. But it may be worth noting that X-Force creator Rob Liefeld has been pretty vocal on Twitter since this announcement was made about sites making sure that the right team members are represented in images attached to articles, and one of his comments seemed down on the idea of Wolverine being part of the team, so I’m not sure what, if anything, that might mean for X-23’s inclusion:
If your images of X-Force film don't include Cable and Domino, you might want to sit this one out, press folks.

TRUTH! But Wolverine as the leader ain't the counter option. https://t.co/YU0fwbER01
— robertliefeld (@robertliefeld) September 7, 2017
In a situation that can be pretty typical in Hollywood, Goddard has experienced a few bad breaks over the years when it comes to getting projects off the ground. He was involved with launching Netflix’s Daredevil, but dropped that when Sony hired him to write and direct their Sinister Six movie that ultimately fell apart. He also wrote the screenplay for Robopocalypse, which Steven Spielberg came within inches of directing before moving on to other things, leaving that project sitting in development hell.
Since helming the absolutely stellar Cabin in the Woods, he’s directed a few episodes of The Good Place and is now working on a small thriller called Bad Times at the El Royale that stars Jeff Bridges and Chris Hemsworth. Deadline says Goddard has “cracked” the script for X-Force already, so he’ll be able to get up and running on that movie as soon as he’s done with El Royale. He’s been flirting with superhero properties for a long time, so I’m glad that he’s finally found one that seems like a good fit; more importantly, though, as a massive Cabin fan, I’m just glad we’ll be seeing another directorial effort from Goddard again soon.
The X-Men slate is looking pretty strong right now. Josh Boone’s New Mutants will hit theaters on April 13, 2018, David Leitch’s Deadpool 2 arrives on June 1, 2018, and Simon Kinberg’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix arrives on November 2, 2018. X-Force doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it seems likely that it’ll arrive sometime in 2019. I’ll leave you with a Liefeld-approved image of the X-Force that may point to which characters we’ll see in the movie:

The last time we heard anything solid about Fox’s X-Force movie, X-Men franchise mainstay Simon Kinberg was working on the screenplay. Then there were rumblings that this team of mutant heroes, darker and a bit more violent than your typical X-Men team, would be introduced in the third Deadpool movie (never mind that Deadpool 2 doesn’t even exist yet). And now, out of the mist, someone new has arrived to steer the X-Force movie toward port: Joe Carnahan.
If you feel like Carnahan has been appearing in a lot of headlines recently, you’d be right. The underrated madman behind The Grey, Smokin’ Aces, and the wildly underrated The A-Team is still attached to direct Bad Boys For Life (the third Bad Boys movie), but he’s also written the most recent version of the Uncharted video game adaptation and is planning to tiptoe on some sacred ground with a remake of The Raid. Of course he was going to get involved in a superhero movie sooner or later.
The story comes our way via Collider and there aren’t many details as of yet. They say that Carnahan is currently attached to write the screenplay, not to direct, but it’s easy to imagine him making it on Fox’s future wish list. His blend of giddy ultra-violence and crass humor is a strong match for X-Force, a team that often counts Deadpool among its line-up. Cable and Domino, two characters who can also be regularly found on the team, will be introduced in Deadpool 2. In other words, the groundwork is being laid…
The X-Men franchise is the godfather of the modern superhero movie and you can sometimes feel its age (especially in the tired X-Men: Apocalypse). However, the combined might of Deadpool, FX’s Legion television series, and the upcoming Logan are giving this motley band of mutants a second wind, which will hopefully carry over to The New Mutants and the still-gestating X-Men: Supernova, both of which are lurking on the horizon. It hasn’t been this exciting to be a movie fan and an X-Men fan since…2003? Maybe?
Anything can happen between now and whenever X-Force gets made (remember when Kick-Ass 2 director Jeff Wadlow was going to make this movie?), but Carnahan feels like the right choice for a series that has started to find its voice again by taking a few risks and pursuing interesting talent. I can’t believe I’m about to say this, but I’m starting to feel ready for another 17 years of X-Men movies.
