Comcast is bringing three new ESPN networks to Xfinity X1 just in time for the college football season. ESPN3, ACC Network Extra and SEC Network + are available on Xfinity X1 now, bringing with them coverage of over 150 live college football games as well as thousands of other events. The three networks will cover more than 5,000 events annually including international soccer, Grand Slam tennis matches and college basketball as well as other collegiate athletics from dozens of schools throughout the US.

“From football and soccer to volleyball and field hockey, this launch gives college sports fans incredible access to live events from schools including Florida State, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh in the ACC, Alabama, Georgia and Texas A&M in the SEC, and dozens more from across the entire country on ESPN3,” Vito Forlenza, executive director of content and product strategy at Comcast Cable, said in a statement. “ESPN3, ACC Network Extra and SEC Network + add a new dynamic to the already deep catalog of sports programming that’s currently available on X1.”

The networks are integrated with X1’s sports app, through which users can get real-time updates and data on live matches, and X1 customers can search for them through the X1 voice remote.

Xfinity Mobile customers will soon see a change to their video streams. In the coming weeks, videos streamed using cellular data will be limited to 480p resolution, a move that other carriers including T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint have implemented for certain plans in the past. Videos streamed over WiFi won’t be affected by the change and Comcast says that it will offer the option to stream 720p video over cellular data for an added fee later this year. Until that plan becomes available, customers who would like to continue streaming video at 720p will be able to do so for no charge, they’ll just have to call the carrier in order to set that up. Additionally, users with an unlimited plan will see their hotspot speeds capped at 600 Kbps.

“We’re making two changes to our service to help us maintain the low price point of Xfinity Mobile,” Comcast told Engadget. “First, we’re establishing 480p as the default resolution for streaming video over cellular data on Xfinity Mobile, which is consistent with standard unlimited plans across carriers. It’s important to note that this change won’t impact video resolution when using Wi-Fi, where customers will continue to be able to stream in HD. Second, we’re setting personal hotspotting at 3G speeds for all Unlimited customers, which will allow customers to continue to do many of the things they enjoy doing online. Our By the Gig data option will continue to deliver 4G speeds for all data traffic.”

If you’re an Xfinity internet customer in the northeast, it might be worth running a speed test. Comcast just announced that it’s bumping download speeds for internet users in a total of 14 northeastern states, from Maine down through Virginia. Each of the four internet tiers Xfinity offers will increase, though by how much will vary. The two higher-speed “Blast” and “Performance Pro” options increase from 200 and 150 Mbps to 250 and 150 Mbps, respectively. The basic “Performance” tier, meanwhile, jumps from 25 to 60 Mbps, and the modest “Starter” tier moves from 10 to 15 Mbps.

Comcast says that customers’ bills won’t change after these increases go into effect, and with this increase, 80 percent of Xfinity internet customers have speeds of 150 Mbps or more. We may not have affordable gigabit internet in the US yet, but that’s not bad, and it’s hard to complain about getting more download bandwidth for free. Unfortunately (and unsurprisingly), Comcast doesn’t mention any changes to its upload speeds, which continue to be a small fraction of what you get for downloads.

Comcast says that the updated speeds will roll out over the next month, and that to access them customers will have to reboot their modems. As for why they’re only upgrading speeds in the northeast region, a Comcast spokesperson noted that it’s typical for the company to make such changes in specific areas rather than going nationwide in one shot. The company says that it’s pretty common to make changes in one area and then the others will follow with similar updates, but they didn’t say when other parts of the US would get an upgrade. That said, customers in the midwest also received a speed increase last fall, though the exact speeds across different packages appear to differ.

Netflix has offered 4K streaming on seemingly every platform under the Sun by this point, but not Comcast’s Xfinity X1. You’ve had to settle for 1080p if your TV, console or digital media player somehow wasn’t up to the job. No more: Comcast has made 4K streaming available on the X1. You’ll need an XG1v4 box, a Netflix Premium subscription and (of course) a 4K TV, but you too can watch Stranger Things or Narcos without missing a pixel.

The addition is part of a broader expansion into 4K, we’d add. Comcast says it’s planning to bring the higher resolution to curated Xfinity on Demand collections and discovery using the voice remote. You’ll also have a choice of resolution for programs, so you don’t have to test the limits of your capped connection by streaming everything in 4K. The cable giant is clearly late to the party, but it’s hard to knock this when it makes 4K Netflix available to people who might never buy a streaming device of their own accord.

Comcast is jumping into the world of wireless, and will be unveiling its long-discussed mobile phone service later today. The company confirmed last September it would be launching a network this year, and according to a report from The Wall Street Journal, it will be unveiled later today as Xfinity Mobile.

The service will be an MVNO, meaning that Comcast will be piggybacking on Verizon’s cellular network. It plans to supplement this with millions of Wi-Fi hotspots, similar to the approach taken by Google’s Project Fi. According to the WSJ, Xfinity Mobile will be available nationally, but only customers who buy at least one of Comcast’s other services — either home internet, television, or a phone landline — will be able to get on board. Details of pricing and data allowances are yet to be announced.

Comcast has been working towards this move for years, ever since it sold a chunk of wireless spectrum to Verizon back in 2011. This was in exchange for access to Verizon’s cellular network. Critics have suggested this will hamper Comcast’s success in wireless, as Verizon can raise the prices if it becomes to popular. Executives for Comcast told WSJ that this was not a concern, as the deal with Verizon was “perpetual.”

Comcast cable customers will soon be able to access YouTube directly through the Xfinity X1 set-top box.

Arriving across the U.S. later this year, the YouTube app will offer more than a simple third-party “click and launch” interface — the Google-owned video service will be integrated into the very fabric of the Xfinity platform. This means that users can launch YouTube using voice controls in the X1 remote, which understands natural-language queries. YouTube content is also searchable alongside Comcast’s other live and on-demand programming — a single search can surface content from multiple services and content providers.

Today’s news comes four months after Netflix finally launched on Comcast, and it continues Comcast’s refreshed approach to battling standalone internet TV services — if it can’t beat the cord-cutters, it may as well join them.

Ultimately, such deals represent a win-win for all concerned — not only does it give Comcast an advantage over its cable competitors, it keeps customers within the Xfinity ecosystem and saves them switching between Comcast’s service and third-party platforms such as Chromecast or Apple TV.
