The 2019 Volvo XC40 is the entry-level crossover for the Swedish automaker. It takes the same basic formula that’s worked well for the XC90 and XC60 and distills it into a smaller, cuter and less expensive package. Like the competition from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and more, the XC40 sells as much on style as it does on practicality or drivability.

Our tester was the R-Design model, one of two trims available at the car’s launch. The R-Design package adds $ 2,500 to the XC40’s base price and includes 19-inch wheels, LED fog lights, a black contrasting roof, gloss-black roof rails, power front seats with leather and nubuck, paddle shifters and a few more sporty touches. Other options on this model include the $ 900 premium package (wireless charging pad, pilot assist, hidden storage compartments and more), a $ 995 advanced package (360-degree camera), a $ 1,200 panoramic moonroof, $ 800 20-inch wheels, and a few other individual features.

And in case you missed it, the XC40’s EPA mileage ratings came out this week.

Associate Editor Joel Stocksdale: You know, I was a little let down by this crossover. I’m a huge fan of the 90 series Volvos (XC90, S90, V90) because of they provide serene driving experiences without being overly cushy and floaty. The XC40 doesn’t deliver on that. Instead, it seems Volvo tried to make it a little sportier, and as a result it feels compromised. The ride is a bit stiff and bumpy. The body moves around more than it should over pavement imperfections. Handling is secure but uninspiring, especially in “Comfort” mode in which there’s a fair amount of body roll. “Dynamic” helps solve the body roll issue and gives the steering good weight, but it makes the ride worse and the steering is always completely numb.

The engine is another point that feels a bit compromised. It’s on the loud side, and it’s not particularly nice sounding, though the audible turbo hisses and whistles are fun. I’m also more forgiving of it because it’s a fun engine to play with. There’s a bit of lag, but not enough to be annoying, and it pulls so hard in the low- to mid-range. It would be great in a lower-to-the-ground, sportier model, such as the inevitable S40 and V40.

What’s not compromised on the XC40 is the style. This thing is the coolest-looking compact crossover on the market, inside and out, period. It’s not just the bull-nosed, chunky, funky body that makes it a style champion, the little details do, too. I’m in love with the little silicone rubber Swedish flag tag tucked in the gap between the fender and hood. The aluminum trim with black highlights on the interior is unlike anything I’ve seen on another crossover, and it both looks and feels cool and unique.

It’s also a comfortable place to be with the highly adjustable seats in our test car, which provided just the right amount of lateral and lumbar support. Volvo’s touchscreen infotainment also is quite stylish, though it’s not as easy to use as I’d like. And really, the car is just so beautifully designed, that I could just about overlook its dynamic shortfalls. Almost.

Associate Editor Reese Counts: I almost hate to say it, but I disagree quite heavily with Joel. I was supremely impressed by the XC40. I was worried Volvo’s package would lose something in the distillation process, but all of the high points — design, build quality, ergonomics and practicality — have all carried over mostly unchanged. Sure, some of the materials on the interior are cheaper than what you get in larger siblings, but it’s also a crossover that starts at just over $ 35,000. It also looks and feels better than any of the German competition.

I think it drives well too. Sure, the steering is a bit lifeless, but it’s direct and weighted well. I’m not going to be carving canyons or doing hot laps at Seca. I just want something that has a little life around town. I also think the ride quality is pretty good. Better in some aspects than the XC60 and XC90. Both of those can be harsh and uncompromising, especially with larger-diameter wheels. The XC40, despite having optional 20s, is firm but not backbreaking. It also feels pretty composed on rough pavement.

This engine is a real peach. The exhaust note is a little rough, but it’s really responsive, especially off the line. That’s true even in comfort mode. The eight-speed is fine, though it seemed to be working a little harder than I would like.

The design is great. It’s cute and stylish without compromising visibility or space. So many competitors have tiny hatches or small greenhouses. This just feels like a small, handsome crossover. I love it.

The EPA ratings for the new Volvo XC40 compact SUV have been released. The official figures put the 248-horsepower, $ 35,200 XC40 T5 AWD at 23 mpg city, 31 highway and 26 combined.

Those numbers are pretty decent in the XC40’s class, as the slightly more expensive, $ 35,900 BMW X1 xDrive28i does slightly poorer: 22 city, 31 highway, 25 combined. The $ 35k Audi Q3 quattro has even worse figures, at 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, 23 mpg combined.

And if you were to do some savings by choosing a cheaper vehicle like the $ 28,490 (Touring spec) to $ 31,920 (Grand Touring spec) Mazda CX-5 AWD with its non-turbo 2.5 SkyActiv engine, you would benefit from slightly better fuel economy in the city — the Mazda gets 24 mpg in the city, but only 30 mpg on the highway, and the combined mileage matches the Volvo at 26. Of course, the Mazda’s engine only produces 184 hp against the Volvo’s significantly more powerful turbo unit, while the Audi Q3’s TFSI engine offers 200 hp and the BMW’s similarly two-liter turbo has 231 hp.

Finally, one interesting comparison can be done with the Mercedes-Benz GLA250 4matic: the $ 35,400 MSRP and the fuel economy of the Benz match the Volvo at 23 city, 31 highway and 26 combined. But the GLA250 is down on power compared to the Volvo; The Benz’s 208-horsepower turbo four has a 40-hp deficit.

When Volvo revealed the XC40, it also announced the introduction of a unique payment plan called Care by Volvo. Instead of messing with haggling and financing, it will let you lease a new XC40 with one simple flat-rate each month that’s the same nationwide. Volvo didn’t put a price tag on that for the U.S., though. But we did discover that the program does have a price in the U.K., specifically £629 a month for 24 months for a T5 model with the turbocharged, 247-horsepower model. At current exchange rates, that would come to $ 853 per month, which would come to about $ 10,200 a year.

Now something to keep in mind is that pricing is never a direct translation between countries, so there will probably be a difference between the U.K. and U.S. pricing. It could be a fairly substantial change, too, since the most affordable T5 XC40 (a slightly higher trim R-Design, while the U.S. will have a more modest Momentum trim to start) costs almost $ 48,500, while America’s entry-level XC40 T5 will cost just $ 35,200. That puts the American T5 at about 73 percent of the cost of the U.K. version. If we assume that American pricing for Care by Volvo is similarly less, the monthly cost would be about $ 623 per month, or nearly $ 7,500 a year.

That’s certainly easier to stomach than $ 10,000 a year, but it’s still not exactly cheap. And put into perspective, paying that much per month over two years would nearly equal half the base purchase price of the XC40. Then again, the Care by Volvo price doesn’t just cover the cost of the car. It also covers maintenance and insurance. Whether or not that would make the plan financially better would come down to the individual, but some people might even be willing to spend a bit more just for the simplicity.

The Volvo XC40 carries heavy expectations as the Swedish automaker ventures into the small SUV segment for the first time. With striking looks and a competitive price point — $ 35,200 — Volvo is rounding out its portfolio with a product that could prove to be its best seller. The small SUV segment is a knife fight, but here’s why Volvo appears to be gaining an edge:

The design: Look at these pictures and feel a tinge of regret for whatever you might have just committed 30-something-thousand dollars to. The XC40 is a looker. The Thor’s Hammer daytime running lights, that blocky yet angled C-pillar, those crazy wheels — wow! And this crossover will probably look better in real life. It’s a style competitors like the 2018 GMC Terrain and 2017 Jeep Compass are using to convey a premium feel and sense of individuality.

Care by Volvo: What a smart idea. Take the things people hate about purchasing and owning a car, and streamline or eliminate them. Under the program, you pay a flat fee that covers the cost of the car, insurance and maintenance. There’s no negotiation, and the process starts with an online order. Volvo compares the Care program to mobile phone plans, which have their own pitfalls, but are generally easier to comprehend than planning how to pay for all of the things associated with cars. After 12 months, you can get a different Volvo, much like cellphone plans that allow an upgrade after a defined period. The Care program makes driving more like a mobile service, where the hardware is a reason for purchase consideration, but less permanent than traditional methods like buying or leasing a car. Naturally, the XC40 will also be available those ways.

The platform: This is a generic term gearheads like to use to describe the bones that underpin a car. Much is made when vehicles share a platform. It means little to the consumer. But Volvo’s new Compact Modular Architecture is critical. Developed from the ground up, it will underpin all of the company’s small vehicles, slotting below the 60- and 90-series products. This platform will also be able to handle fully electrified vehicles, as Volvo makes that technology a key part of its strategy. Companies of all sizes struggle with building smaller vehicles that live up to the rest of their portfolio. The CMA shows that Volvo is serious about winning in this critical area.

After months of teasers and leaked images, Volvo finally pulled back the curtain on its latest crossover, the all-new XC40. The stylish new crossover packs in everything you would expect from a modern Volvo. The model will pack a whole host of active and passive safety equipment beneath its handsome, sporty skin. Two gasoline powertrains have been announced, though a hybrid and full electric version will come sometime later.

As with nearly every compact crossover, the XC40 looks to sell as much on style as it does on substance. Volvo is offering a wide range of interior and exterior colors, including a two-tone roof. The overall design is a smaller, more sporty version of what you see on the XC90 and XC60. That’s far from a bad thing, as those two are some of the best looking vehicles around.

At launch, the XC40 will come in a T5 Momentum all-wheel-drive variant. That model starts at $ 35,200 and comes with a turbocharged inline-four. Later in 2018, a $ 33,200 front-wheel drive model will hit showrooms.
