One of the biggest, bold things Disney did after buying Lucasfilm was to expand the scope of the “Star Wars” franchise beyond the Skywalker saga. That kicked off in earnest with 2016’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” a movie that managed to turn a few lines of text from the opening crawl of “A New Hope” into a $ 1 billion hit — and arguably one of the best “Star Wars” movies ever made. At the very least, it’s certainly one of the most beloved of the Disney era. Now, we’re getting to revisit that corner of the universe with “Andor,” the latest live-action “Star Wars” show on Disney+, which just dropped its three-episode premiere.
As the title implies, the show centers on Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, a member of the Rebellion who is at the center of “Rogue One.” This show picks up with him years before he meets his demise in that film and shows us how he got involved in the Rebellion in the first place. It has already been picked up for two seasons and those two seasons will take us right up to the events of “Rogue One.” There is a plan in place, and as a fan, it feels as though Lucasfilm is not just flying by the seat of its pants on this one. This show feels different in a profound and very positive way: It actually feels like a show, and is making good use of this particular medium of storytelling.

Some of the best “Star Wars” we’ve ever had has been on TV. While “The Mandalorian” is surely included in that, I am also talking about animation, such as “Star Wars Rebels.” But Disney has doubled down on TV in this franchise following the sequel trilogy and, in some cases, that hasn’t made a lot of sense or produced ideal results.
“The Book of Boba Fett” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” have their fans, but in my humble opinion, these shows were done a disservice by the medium and probably would have been better off as movies. Both of those shows were originally going to be movies at various points. Unfortunately, the relative failure of “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at the box office made Lucasfilm back off a bit and rethink its strategy with spin-off films. So those projects became shows instead, largely due to the fact that “The Mandalorian” did so well on Disney+, paving a new path for “Star Wars” to traverse.
But just because something can be a show doesn’t mean it should be. More doesn’t equal better. You could feel the story being stretched at points in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” and perhaps just as importantly, the budget, as well. Having to stretch those dollars over more hours did that show a big disservice. It deserved to feel cinematic. Deborah Chow could have directed the hell out of a movie that reunited Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan and Hayden Christensen’s Darth Vader. The show had outstanding moments, but was largely a five-hour movie carved up into episodes that weren’t really episodes — they were just breaking points that only kind of/sort of worked.
Similarly, “The Book of Boba Fett” felt as though it might have been served better as a more concise, cinematic story. Having to tell a longer story and get clever with the budget hurt the project in the long run. Neither of these series, in my humble “Star Wars”-loving opinion, benefited from being a show rather than being a movie. That’s the key.

Let me be crystal clear: I love “Star Wars,” and more to the point, I love to love “Star Wars.” I am not cynical by nature. So I take no joy in saying any of these shows left me feeling a bit empty. Thankfully, “Andor” doesn’t suffer from that same pitfall. This is a show that truly feels as though it was always meant to be a show, and actually benefits from episodic storytelling. Also, not for nothing, it looks absolutely incredible, and, for whatever reason, doesn’t (at least through the first few episodes) suffer some of the visual setbacks of “Obi-Wan” or “Boba Fett.” It’s stunning, and doesn’t feel like a movie being carved up for parts to benefit a streaming service.
Some people have run up against the first two episodes of this show being a bit slow. Again, I can only speak to my personal feelings and say that I didn’t have that issue. Even so, a great many wonderful shows get off to somewhat slow starts. What Tony Gilroy and the rest of the crew have done here is make a “Star Wars” show that is tailored to the medium and benefits from being able to spend time with these characters and living in the world. It doesn’t feel like character stuff being injected into the story to fill time. There is a gigantic difference.
The point is, some “Star Wars” stories are going to make sense on TV and some aren’t. Some should definitely be a movie, or perhaps nothing at all. It delights me to say that “Andor” would only be hampered by a constricted, two-hour runtime and that Lucasfilm made the right call in this case. My sincere hope is that, in the future, more of this franchise on the small screen feels this way as well, and other stories don’t get forced onto Disney+ merely because that’s what the corporate overlords want.
“Andor” is now streaming on Disney+.

AVENTURA, Florida — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has battled large corporation on everything from diversity trainings to environmental, social, and governance investing. He even took on family-favorite Disney by stripping the company of its self-governing status.
It's a surprising approach to business for a Republican who has support from more than 40 billionaire donors, and one that some critics have called heavy-handed and polarizing. Republicans have historically doled out major tax breaks to corporations while eschewing regulations in favor of a more hands-off posture.
But on Sunday evening in an hourlong speech before the National Conservatism Conference, DeSantis said Republicans' approach and thinking about big business needs to change, arguing that his experiences in Florida provide a "lesson for people on the right."
"Corporatism is not the same as free enterprise, and I think too many Republicans have viewed limited government to basically mean whatever is best for corporate America is how we want to do the economy," DeSantis said during his keynote speech before a crowd of friendly attendees at the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort.
"And my view is — obviously free enterprise is the best economic system — but that is a means to an end. It's a means to having a good fulfilling life and a prosperous society. It's not an end in and of itself."
DeSantis has pushed through numerous contentious policies as governor that netted him national headlines and criticisms from the Biden administration. With the attention has come speculation that he may run for president in 2024.
First, however, he has to win reelection in Florida in November. He'll be facing off against former Rep. Charlie Crist, a Democrat who was a Republican governor of Florida from 2007 to 2011.

DeSantis has taken numerous actions against what he refers to as "woke corporations." Most recently, he pushed the State Board of Administration to ban the consideration of "social, political, or ideological interests" — such as ESG — when it decides what investments to make for the state's pension fund.
The governor also revoked Disney World's self-governing status after the company pleaded with the governor to oppose the Parental Rights in Education Act. The bill limits discussions about gender identity and sexual orientation in a way critics say is too vague and will harm LGBTQ students, parents, and teachers. Critics have dubbed the law the "Don't Say Gay" bill.
Another law, the "Stop WOKE Act," would limit the way private companies carry out mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings. Companies that have 15 employees or more could face civil lawsuits if a worker accuses them of violating the law, which says businesses can't implement trainings saying members of a specific ethnic group are inherently racist or that people should feel guilty for actions committed by their predecessors.
And soon after former President Donald Trump left office and was booted off social media platforms for his role in the January 6, 2021m violent attack on the Capitol, DeSantis signed a bill into law to prevent tech companies from censoring political candidates.
"There's some people that criticize us in Florida because we've taken action to stand up to big tech companies," DeSantis said Sunday evening. "They say you know what, it's private. Let them do what they want to do. First of all, they cannot be viewed as private entities given that we know without a shadow of a doubt they are doing the regime's bidding when it comes to censorship."

Some of the business laws in Florida are in litigation. The business portion of the "Stop WOKE Act" is being stayed after a judge cited free speech violations. The tech law has been blocked by an appeals court, with Circuit Judge Kevin Newsom writing in the opinion that "the government can't tell a private person or entity what to say or how to say it."
Other Florida laws have been confusing to navigate. This week, for instance, a Miami school board rejected a measure to observe LGBTQ History month, even though the governor's office said it wouldn't have violated the Parental Rights law.
But DeSantis doubled down on his actions during Sunday night's speech and predicted his administration would prevail against legal challenges. He accused "corporate America" of having too much power in America and of "exercising quasi-public power in terms of using their economic power to change policy in this country."
"What I'm doing is using government to give space to the individual citizen to be able to participate in society to be able to speak his or her mind," DeSantis said.
"And I think that's an absolutely appropriate use of government power. "

“Shaun: ‘The Avengers,’ Judi: ‘The Avengers?’ Me: ‘HE JUST SAID THAT!!’ #TheChase,” wrote another viewer.
A fifth said: “Repeats the wrong answer the Chaser just gave klaxon.”
Bradley told the pair the correct answer was, in fact, “Guardians of the Galaxy”.
Unfortunately, despite Judi’s best efforts, Shaun managed to catch her, meaning she went home empty-handed.
“Judi that was a yummy performance, well done. But at the end of the day, it’s just another day at the office,” Shaun concluded.
The Chase airs weekdays from 5pm on ITV.

“Everybody’s looking at you Olly,” Tom quipped.

Titled The Nativity, the BBC‘s festive special of The Goes Wrong Show aired at primetime back on December 22 at 7pm. The half-hour Christmas play saw a handful of amateur performers take to the stage to deliver a take on the classic nativity associated with Christmas Day. However, it’s safe to say the tone of the episode didn’t sit well with all viewers, with some branding it an “insult” and “unacceptable” to Christianity.
The BBC’s synopsis for the episode reads: “The Goes Wrong Show team present their take on the nativity story, generously funded by a corporate sponsor after the BBC refused to pay for any more of the Cornley Dramatic Society’s work.
“As ever, all soon descends into chaos: an ingenious pop-up book set soon proves a physical danger to both cast and crew, the angel Gabriel develops a firework obsession, the actors inside a donkey have a terrible falling out that results in unnecessary nudity, and there is much more fire than anyone anticipated. In between, the greatest story ever told is told.”
The Goes Wrong Show Christmas special starred the likes Henry Shields, Charlie Russell and Henry Lewis hoping to provide the laughs.
But the episode had the opposite desired effect with some, with several BBC viewers venting their outrage online.

Taking to Twitter, one disgruntled viewer said: “#bbc what a disgrace I have just watched BBC TV The Goes Wrong Show
“Series 2: 1. The Nativity I am a Christian and found the show totally unacceptable.”
And they weren’t alone as a second echoed: “The Goes Wrong Show: The Nativity @bbc canned laughter, not funny, so offensive to millions of Christians across London.”
“The Goes Wrong Show tonight in BBC 1 – appalling and an insult to the Christian religion,” weighed in a third.
“However, we are always very conscious of how jokes might resonate with those with direct experience of the subjects we cover, and we never set out to mock or undermine their beliefs and experiences.”
Despite some of the criticism from viewers, there was still a number who enjoyed the festive tongue-in-cheek comedy.
One viewer added to the debate: “Have just caught up with the #GoesWrongShow nativity.. absolutely brilliant!! Can’t wait until we can see the amazing @mischiefcomedy live again!”
“#GoesWrongShow nativity was absolutely brilliant. Thank you @mischiefcomedy. Whole family in fits of laughter,” added a second.
Clara Amfo and Aljaz Skorjanec were the first couple taking to the Strictly Come Dancing dance floor on Saturday evening as they hoped to bounce back from an underwhelming performance last week. Kicking the BBC show off with a jive, the fast-paced routine sadly appeared to get the better of the Radio 1 DJ however, after a series of missteps and awkward timing fails. And with the competition now in full swing, judge Craig Revel Horwood did not mince his words when it came to his criticism.
Moments after their routine, Clara and Aljaz turned to Craig for his thoughts on the dance.
And he let loose: “You lost your balance on the leap at the beginning and I think that set you off on a bit of a wobbly, darling.
“You need to be a lot higher up on your toes in this dance as well.
“You lost your footing through the chase section, (and) you forgot the routine halfway through which was unfortunate.”

Their score also landed them at the bottom of the leaderboard heading into the public vote.
However, it doesn’t seem to have put Strictly viewers off who took to social media in their hundreds to throw their support behind the star.
Sadly, the same couldn’t be said for the likes of Bill Bailey and Clara Amfo, who both were pulled up for missing steps in their respective dances.
“Right @claraamfo stans,” said one fan on Twitter. “It’s time to save Clara again with the vote #Strictly.”
Sir Cliff appeared on Life Stories where he was interviewed by the show’s host Piers Morgan, 55, last month.
In the candid chat about his life, the musician opened up about the death of his father, who passed away at the age of 56.
20-years-old at the time, the singer explained: “It wasn’t easy for any of us really, but he was a naughty person really, he did smoke a lot.
“That’s why I feel some times that my anger if I’ve got any, comes out when I think he missed the best things in my life.”

Naga Munchetty welcomed James Cleverly onto the show this morning as the presenter grilled the Foreign Office Minister on the Government’s Brexit negotiations. However, the BBC Breakfast host cut off Cleverly after the Tory MP slammed Munchetty for “repeating wrong information” during the heated debate.
How is Boris Johnson handling the coronavirus crisis? Vote in our poll
Munchetty said: “In the Conservative Party manifesto, Boris Johnson had said, ‘With a new parliament and a sensible majority Government,’ you have a significant majority Government.
“‘We can get that Brexit deal through in days, it is oven-ready and all of the Conservative MPs have elected to vote for it immediately.’
“He spoke of a deal that was ‘oven-ready, ready to go, put it in at gas mark four and Bob’s your uncle,’ these are his words.
She added: “Why are we reporting, why are we talking about fractious relations between negotiators negotiating this deal now with EU leaders and where’s the over-ready deal?”

“No, you’re conflating two completely different things,” Cleverly hit back.
“The deal you were referencing and quoting the Prime Minister on was the Withdrawal Agreement Act.
“The deal that every single Conservative candidate at the General Election said they would support.
“We got the majority, they did support it, it went through, we left the European Union.”
“The Internal Market Bill breaks international law,” Munchetty quipped. “That’s the discussion carrying on at the moment.”
Shaking his head, the Tory MP said: “No it doesn’t.”
“The legislation called the Internal Market Bill doesn’t correspond with international law,” Munchetty reiterated.
“No, you’re repeating something that’s wrong,” Cleverly swiped. “What the Internal Market Bill does is it protects the integrity of the United Kingdom.
“It gives us the ability if we are unable to get that…”
Cutting the Tory MP off, Munchetty asked: “Just to clarify the EU’s legal threat is incorrect is it?”
Cleverly replied: “No, what the point is the Internal Markets Bill gives us the ability to protect the integrity of the United Kingdom.
“That may mean we have to diverge from some of the elements in the Withdrawal Agreement.”
BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
This week on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the team in the 1970s discovered a familiar face’s bogue plan for world domination.
Upon arriving in 1973 and dressing the part (or not quite, if you’re averse to “elephant pants”), Coulson, May, Daisy and Sousa made a beeline for the “Swordfish” hideout, while Simmons and Deke stayed aboard the Zephyr and Mack and Yo-Yo took a side trip to the Lighthouse base.
At the bar, Coulson & Co. found agents awaiting an announcement from General Rick Stoner, who hailed/introduced his boss Wilfred “Don’t Call Me Freddy” Malick. The thing is (as Jemma had just told Deke), Wilfred is supposed to have died three years prior. Meaning, the Chronicoms did some timeline tampering. In fact, the Chronicoms also helped Malick fast-track the Project Insight concept from Captain America: Winter Soldier. Except in the absence of next-gen helicarriers, the kills would be executed by a satellite that is on track to launch in 1976 — and some future heavy hitters such as Nick Fury and Bruce Banner are on the target list!
After briefly feigning obliviousness, Malick told Coulson that he full well remembers him from this same location 42 years earlier. At that point, Chronicoms appeared and held Coulson and May at gunpoint. Luckily, Daisy — who had earlier been hit on by a young Gideon Malick, until “fiance” Daniel butted in — spotted the future HYDRA honcho’s brother, Nathaniel, so she held him at gunpoint, compelling Wilfred’s men to lower their guns. Daisy and the others then slipped out to the street, where she demo’d her Quake powers in front a wowed Sousa. Enoch, sporting a mod mock turtleneck, unexpectedly pulled up in a sweet ride, to whisk his friends away.
Alas, soon after the team reunited/debriefed each other aboard the Zephyr, the dashboard went haywire and they quite unexpectedly jumped in time, to 1976. Meaning, Project Insight: Retro Edition is soon to launch, from the Lighthouse — which jibes with the suspicious activity Mack and Yo-Yo had observed there in 1973. Coulson and May don “throwback” jumpsuits to infiltrate the base and plant explosives that will flood it. At one point, stalled in their tracks because Nathaniel Malick had spotted and KO’d Daisy and Sousa near a computer port, Coulson and May bumped into Rick Stoner. Though Coulson did his best to snow the general, May “felt” that Stoner was not in fact falling for it, so she decked him.
Deke and Yo-Yo meanwhile confront Wilfred Malick at his nearby estate, at gunpoint. When he refuses to stand down — insisting they have no idea what they are up against, the the Chronicoms are and have been 10 steps ahead — Deke puts a fatal bullet into the out-of-time baddie, to maintain, he quips, the “status quo.” We then realize who was in the photo that the lead Chronicom had slipped to Malick, representing their “leverage” against SHIELD: Mack’s parents, who are being held inside the Lighthouse. Mack thus chooses to spare his folks and orders Coulson and May to abort the bomb detonation, after which they get captured. The Zephyr then takes off and shoots down the launched rocket — unfortunately disclosing their position in the process.
Elsewhere this week:
* Jemma repeatedly rubbed the back of her neck, seemingly during moments of frustration/fatigue — but as we come to realize, a pulsing something is embedded in the back of her neck. When she at one point rubs it and worries to Enoch that she is becoming forgetful (e.g. about Deke’s “Bobo” nickname for Fitz), he pulls her aside to tend to the matter. But because an increasingly curious/irate/resentful Sousa stormed in to confront her about the time jumping, we never saw what Enoch had in mind.
* In the bonus scene, Nathaniel Malick, having abducted Daisy and Sousa, pulled over his van to phone a prison and ask to speak to Daniel Whitehall — specifically, about a theory the “old man” has about surgically transferring enhanced abilities, such as those he witnessed Daisy use in ’73….

Christine was keen to hear more from Linda asking: “Why do you feel sorry for him Linda?”
“I just do,” she replied. “I just think they were in a car the four of them going for a drive or whatever, not hurting anyone, self-isolating in the car, they couldn’t hurt anyone else.”
Saira interrupted: “But so many people could have done that up and down this country but they were told that they can’t.”
“I’m sure many people have done that Saira,” Linda retorted.
