  • Fewer than 5% of monetizable user accounts on Twitter are controlled by bots, according to digital intelligence provider Similarweb.
  • But bots still account for around 21%-29% of US content on Twitter.
  • Elon Musk has been hedging on his deal to buy Twitter due to concerns of the number of spam bots on Twitter.

Since July, Elon Musk has been having second thoughts about his decision to buy Twitter, leading up to his intention to quash the $ 44 billion deal. One of his concerns, he says, is the number of spam "bots" running rampant on the platform. 

Musk says he believes that bots comprise upwards of 20% of accounts on Twitter. 

Twitter, meanwhile, says that the number of bots on the platform is marginal — less than 5%.

Research published Thursday by the digital intelligence provider Similarweb seems to corroborate Twitter's claims — even though the amount of tweets generated by those bots may make it appear otherwise.

Bots are automated accounts that help drive traffic on Twitter. They operate just like accounts controlled by human users— retweeting posts, liking posts, and following other accounts. 

Bots affect a metric known as mDAU, or monetized daily active users. However, the more bots there are, the fewer actual, human mDAUs there are. Ultimately, advertisers, marketing agencies, and companies want to reach real humans. 

In Similarweb's study, the method wasn't to find the ratio of bots but to instead estimate the number of real human users, according to the company's CTO Ron Asher. 

He added that "in a nutshell" Similarweb's data supports the finding that Twitter's estimates are reasonable.

Yet the study also found a grain of truth in Musk's claims. 

Similarweb reported that 20%-29% of content in the US on Twitter is generated by bots. The study also found that only 19% of real, authenticated Twitter users in the US generate content everyday. 

Similarweb noted that "not all bots are evil" — but some can pose serious threats.  

"The issue is more with bots that evade that officially sanctioned path, faking human interaction. Often, they do this so they can artificially inflate sentiment for and against stocks, products, politicians, or causes," Similarweb noted. "Twitter says it tries to identify and eliminate as many of these frauds as possible but admits those countermeasures are not perfect."

  • In June, Trump's lawyer wouldn't let DOJ and FBI agents search boxes in a storage room in Mar-a-Lago. 
  • The DOJ said 76 classified documents were found in that room during the raid on Trump's property two months later. 
  • The discovery "casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter," the DOJ wrote in a court filing Tuesday. 

The FBI and Department of Justice discovered 76 classified documents in a Mar-a-Lago storage room during the August raid — the same room Trump's lawyer refused to let them search in June, according to court documents. 

The filing, released Tuesday night, revealed additional information about the August 8 raid including the DOJ's conclusion that "efforts were likely taken" to obstruct its investigation into Trump's handling of government records.

Trump's lawyer let a DOJ attorney and FBI agents into a Mar-a-Lago storage room after turning over 38 classified documents, according to the filing.

But, Trump's lawyer "explicitly prohibited" agents from looking inside any boxes that were still in the room.

Eventually, investigators gathered enough evidence that classified documents were still in that room to apply for a search warrant. 

"The government also developed evidence that government records were likely concealed and removed from the Storage Room and that efforts were likely taken to obstruct the government's investigation," the DOJ said in the court filing. 

The August raid uncovered 76 classified documents in that room alone, according to the court document. 

Investigators found twice the number of documents Trump's attorneys had taken "weeks" to turn over, according to the filing — which the government says "casts doubt on the extent of cooperation in this matter."

The Department of Justice has said in court filings that it is investigating whether the former president broke three federal statutes — including the Espionage Act — by keeping classified national security documents at his Florida estate after leaving office.

The ITV breakfast show’s resident doctor, Dr Sarah Jarvis, spoke on the programme this morning ahead of tomorrow’s new rules on wearing face masks in shops. Dr Sarah was on hand to answer some queries about what the public should and shouldn’t do to make sure they use the masks correctly and whilst discussing this with the hosts, she clarified people should not be ironing face masks after Adil claimed this could save time and could be done instead of washing them.

The UK public have so far had to adapt to wearing face masks on public transport amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. 

However, tomorrow will see rules changed which mean the PPE items are now compulsory in shops and some takeaway restaurants. 

This morning saw Dr Sarah explain what this would mean for those across the nation but at one point, she had to correct host Adil’s theory of ironing face masks to save time.

He explained how doing this after wearing could save time and make the process of using the masks easier but the doctor insisted this advice was not to be followed, hitting back: “I really wouldn’t recommend that.”

I’m A Celebrity contestant Roman Kemp, 26, had a couple of members of the camp in stitches as he revealed a hilarious story about the time he was invited to DJ at a Buckingham Palace garden party by Prince Harry. But the Prince had some tricks up his sleeve that he tried to get Roman involved in – but he refused.

The exclusive clip was played on the ITV spin-off show, Extra Camp, and Joel Dommett and Emily Atack were eager to find out what the campers were getting up to while off-air from the main show.

Cutting from the studio to the camp, viewers saw James Haskell quiz Roman about what he did for a living.

Roman’s a DJ on Capital Radio and was surprised when he found out James enjoyed DJing too.

The celebrities are only four days into their jungle adventure and are still getting to know each other.

But Roman decided to reveal an exclusive story from his time at Buckingham Palace.

As the contestants were having down time, he spoke to James and Ian Wright, who were keen to hear the wild tale.

“I’m like ‘what’s going on here’?” Roman laughed: “I say ‘who am I aiming for?’”

The DJ revealed Harry wanted him to fire the balloon at his brother, Prince William.

At that point his audience were howling laughter at the thought of the royal’s “messing” with each other like that.

Roman continued: “I was like ‘I’m not going to do that’, I don’t want to be done for treason!”

“Yeah, they’ll put you in the tower for that,” James giggled.

But the end of Roman’s story really tickled the men, as he revealed it was Kate who took over firing duty and proceeded to hit her husband with the balloon.

“What an exclusive!” Joel said, as they cut back to the studio.

“That’s such a great insight!” Guest and former camper Alison Hammond said, impressed with the royal revelation.

“It just shows the Royal Family are so normal!”

Last year’s edition of I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! was criticised by some for having too little entertainment value as the campmates simply got on so well.

But that’s the exact reason Sunday Brunch presenter Simon Rimmer would consider taking part on the ITV programme now.

Simon, 56, is no stranger to reality shows having tried his best to don his ballroom dancing shoes and wow viewers on Strictly Come Dancing nearly two years ago.

The former contestant wasn’t hopeful for his chances in the fiercely competitive BBC series, but in the end he surprised himself and managed to get to week six with his professional dance partner Karen Clifton.

Now the TV personality has revealed he could very well be joining the crew Down Under in Australia later this year.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Simon shared: “I’d probably do the jungle.

“I always said I wouldn’t, but think I’ve become quite intrigued by that.”

“It’s a slightly different show now too – it’s a really nice warm cuddly show these days,” he laughed.

“In the past it always felt the jungle thrived on the tension in the camp,” the star continued. “But this year in particular, I thought was really lovely.

“Just a really nice bunch of people. Emily [Atack] was brilliant, Fleur [East] was brilliant, Harry [Redknapp] was amazing, really good this year.”

Despite Simon’s encouraging thoughts on taking part in the show, the presenter revealed there is one programme he couldn’t be swayed to have a crack at.

“I definitely wouldn’t do Dancing On Ice!” he declared.

Last year’s series of I’m A Celebrity saw its biggest change since the beginning when Holly Willoughby took over regular presenter Ant McPartlin’s role.

The This Morning host, 37, filled in for her old friend and joined Geordie favourite Declan Donnelly in camp for three weeks, and was largely praised for her approach to the Australian show.

Despite her enjoyment taking part in the project though, Holly was keen to ensure fans knew it was a one off.

When Ant made his return to television the presenter was keen to get back to her regular duties with longtime co-star Phillip Schofield.

Dec suggested it was actually Holly’s decision whether she wanted to return – but it would possibly be in another role.

Speaking to Digital Spy at the BAFTAs last month, the father-of-one said: “That’s kind of down to her I suppose, she was fantastic out there last year.

“She made it clear that she’s seen it as a one-year thing so I don’t think she’ll be back this year – but you never know, there’s plenty of time between now and then.”

The Swiss racer got into difficulties as he approached a section of the course known as “the camel hump,” careening into the air in front of horrified spectators.

Gisin then landed awkwardly on his back and side and slid down the piste for around 100 yards, before coming to a stop where he laid motionless.

Race winner Aleksander Aamodt Kilde of Norway was seen looking away from the incident in obvious concern for Gisin’s safety.

The race was suspended for 30 minutes as doctors administered treatment to the stricken star, who remained unconscious.

A helicopter was then brought onto the slopes to airlift him to nearby Bolzano hospital.

Gisin’s sister, Michelle — gold medallist in the women’s combined discipline at the Olympics in Pyeongchang in February — told reporters that her brother regained consciousness before being put onto the helicopter.

She is reported to have told Swiss news site Blick: “Marc has woken up and his condition is stable.

“He was unconscious for a very long time… Let’s hope [for] the best. At the moment we do not know any more.”

Speaking to the same publication, Kilde said: “It’s always a risk. If it happens, you cannot do much. I wish him all the best.”

According to Italian site Gazzetta dello Sport, Gisin has suffered a pelvic fracture; Blick state that no injuries to his head have been discovered.

Gisin suffered another significant crash in 2015 in the Super-G competition at Kitzbuhel in Austria, sustaining a head injury that ended his season.
