So… Peter Bright’s new home for tech support, right? (credit: antxoa)
Ten years ago around this very time—April through June 2008—our intrepid Microsoft guru Peter Bright evidently had an identity crisis. Could this lifelong PC user really have been pushed to the brink? Was he considering a switch to… Mac OS?!? While our staff hopefully enjoys a less stressful Memorial Day this year, throughout the weekend we’re resurfacing this three part series that doubles as an existential operating system dilemma circa 2008. Part three ran on June 1, 2008, and it appears unedited below.
I’ve already described how misfortune and adversity left Apple with a new OS platform free of legacy constraints; and I’ve also discussed how Microsoft had failed to do the same, choosing instead to hobble its new OS with way too much legacy baggage.
Now, let’s look at why I’m even considering the big switch: what has Apple done with its platform to make it so appealing? Of course, if you’re already writing software for the Mac, then I’m not going to tell you anything you already don’t know. But all of this was new to me, because it wasn’t until I became so thoroughly disappointed with Windows that I really looked in earnest at what the Mac had to offer. My mistake.

Part two ran on May 4, 2008, and it appears unedited below.
Last time, I described how Apple turned its failure to develop a modern OS into a great success. The purchase of NeXT gave Apple a buzzword-compliant OS with a healthy ecosystem of high-quality third-party applications. Meanwhile, Microsoft was lumbering along with Windows XP. Although technically sound, it was shot through with the decisions made more than a decade earlier for 16-bit Windows.
In 2001, when XP was released, this was not such a big deal. The first two or three versions of Mac OS X were troublesome, to say the least. Performance was weak, there were stability issues, and version 10.0 arguably wasn’t even feature complete. It wasn’t until early 2002 that Apple even made Mac OS X the default OS on new Macs; for the first few months of its life, XP was up against “Classic” Mac OS 9.

Part one ran on April 21, 2008, and it appears unedited below.
A couple of Gartner analysts have recently claimed that Windows is “collapsing”—that it’s too big, too sprawling, and too old to allow rapid development and significant new features. Although organizations like Gartner depend on trolling to drum up business, I think this time they could be onto something. “Collapsing” is over-dramatic—gradual decline is a more likely outcome—but the essence of what they’re saying—and why they’re saying it—rings true.
Windows is dying, Windows applications suck, and Microsoft is too blinkered to fix any of it—that’s the argument. The truth is that Windows is hampered by 25-year old design decisions. These decisions mean that it’s clunky to use and absolutely horrible to write applications for. The applications that people do write are almost universally terrible. They’re ugly, they’re inconsistent, they’re disorganized; there’s no finesse, no care lavished on them. Microsoft—surely the company with the greatest interest in making Windows and Windows applications exude quality—is, in fact, one of the worst perpetrators.
]]>“WHEN it comes to the meaning of life, we will all return to zero one day.” So philosophised Wu Xiaohui, a Chinese tycoon, as he reflected on his success in 2015. Little did he realise how soon his words would be proved true. He founded his firm, Anbang, as a small car-insurance company just over a decade ago. By 2017 it ranked among the world’s biggest insurers, with some $ 300bn of assets, including stakes in hotels and financial firms in America, Europe and Asia. But then, even more vertiginous than its ascent, came its fall. On February 23rd China’s government said it had taken over Anbang and would prosecute Mr Wu for economic crimes.
Rarely in corporate history has a giant grown and collapsed so quickly. But Anbang’s tale is also interesting for what it reveals about China’s economic landscape. It is the clearest demonstration that regulators are serious about defusing debt risks that have built up in recent years. And it reveals the murky…
]]>In this instance embodied by the 45th governor of Alabama, presidential candidate, Democrat and ardent segregationist George Wallace. He of the “segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever” blast from his January 1963 inaugural address; he of the phalanx, flanked by armed peace officers, that blocked Black students from enrolling at the University of Alabama.
Race is always important in American politics … but one crazy person is not a representative sample of anything other than crazy.
Lee Drutman, adjunct professor, Johns Hopkins University
But it was in the midst of a campaign rally in Wheaton Plaza in Wheaton, Maryland, that Wallace finally heard America speak. Faced with heckling and thrown tomatoes, he moved to another shopping center in nearby Laurel, where Wallace found the crowd generally friendlier, and none more seemingly so than a 22-year-old man dressed in a red, white and blue blazer pinned with a Wallace campaign button.
His name was Arthur Bremer, and he stepped from the crowd of well-wishers and shot Wallace four times. It was May 15, 1972. A month later, I nosed the front tire of my bicycle over what I had been assured by my friend Tommy Smallwood was Wallace’s blood. It may or may not have been, but the grainy images of Wallace going down, and the purported shooter’s cri de coeur, “A penny for your thoughts!” — a line he forgot to utter in the heat of the shooting — stuck.
Bremer was immediately arrested, and the whole circus of crazy came spilling out. His lawyers used an insanity defense. Looking back over his 22 years of living, it was a credible claim as Bremer had drifted, undifferentiated, through minor brushes with the law and family squabbles. His eventual trigger — a relationship gone sour — tripped his interest in first planning to assassinate that year’s eventual presidential winner, Richard Nixon, before settling on Wallace. Not because Bremer was especially opposed to Wallace’s racism but because he, Bremer, wanted to be famous.

“Race is always important in American politics,” says Lee Drutman, adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins and senior fellow in the political reform program at New America. “It’s caught up in a broader sense of cultural change, but one crazy person is not a representative sample of anything other than crazy.”
But Bremer’s crazy resonated. So much so that it framed what Paul Schrader, screenwriter of Taxi Driver, called “Taxi Driver” kids — our particular brand of alienated American strangers, namely John Hinckley, Mark David Chapman, Sara Jane Moore and Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme. “Arthur Bremer’s journal came out after I had written the script,” Schrader said in an NPR interview with Terry Gross. “I was very surprised to find that the voice was almost identical.”
Bremer for his part just wanted “to do something bold and dramatic, forceful and dynamic, a statement of my manhood for the world to see,” he wrote in his diary. Thirteen entries, some half a page, some nearly 20, written during the six weeks prior to the shooting showed a man in the grips of existential concerns about his place in space. Much like a lot of his fellow travelers and other generational compatriots.
Wallace survived, wheelchair-bound for the remainder of days that saw him repudiate his segregationist ways before his death in 1998, at the age of 79. Bremer, originally sentenced to 63 years for shooting Wallace and three others, was released on supervised probation 10 years ago this November at age 57. “Looking back on my life,” Bremer was reported to have said at his sentencing, “I would have liked it if society had protected me from myself.”

On Monday, a former top State Department official who blew the whistle three years ago on what he saw as overzealous surveillance announced a new non-profit law firm, Whistleblower Aid. Unlike most other whistleblowing organizations, however, Whistleblower Aid is employing a few crucial digital tools to help, including Tor and SecureDrop—and it’s entirely pro bono.
“We’re also helping people go to Robert Mueller if they have evidence of crimes by senior officials,” John Tye, the former official, told Ars, referring to the Department of Justice special counsel that is currently investigating possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 presidential election.
Tye’s partner is Mark Zaid, a well-known national security attorney based in Washington, DC. Unlike most modern law firms, which conduct nearly all business by phone and e-mail, Whistleblower Aid outright eschews these methods.

On average, people planning to buy a home estimate their costs will come to £7,643, according to Post Office Money.
But research compiled by Post Office Money and the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) suggests the average bill across the UK is £1,829 higher, at £9,472.
The total includes calculations covering stamp duty costs, estate agents’ and surveyors’ fees, conveyancing costs and removal charges.
Nearly two thirds (65 per cent) of people surveyed who are planning to buy a home said they had a budget of less than £9,000 for their moving costs.
The average moving cost of nearly £9,500 could have been even higher had it not been for stamp duty reforms in December 2014 which changed the way stamp duty is charged.
The changes pushed the average stamp duty bill down from £4,227 at the end of 2014 to £1,774 at the end of 2016, Post Office Money said.
It said average moving costs are forecast to hit £12,267 by 2020, having stood at £7,590 in 2006.
Expected increases in house prices over the coming years will push moving costs up further, according to the predictions.
Cebr looked at Office for National Statistics (ONS) house price data as well as a range of statistics from other sources to calculate average moving costs.
In Scotland, stamp duty has been abolished, so the equivalent tax was looked at there to calculate the UK average.
A survey of more than 500 people looking to move home was also included in the research.
Here is how the cost of moving home adds up, according to Post Office Money/Cebr (figures making up the total have been rounded):
• Stamp duty, £1,774
• Estate agents’ fees, £4,310
• Surveyors’ fees, £764
• Conveyancing costs, £1,558
• Removals charges, £1,065
Values rose 5.1 per cent in the three months to February – higher than in the same period a year ago – and 1.7 per cent higher than the preceding quarter, said the Halifax.
The cost of a typical three bedroom semi is now £219,949 – up £10,091 on the £209,858 price tag recorded in February 2016.
Russell Quirk, of online agents eMoove, said: “It would seem the cobwebs have been dusted off after the New Year hangover with these latest numbers showing the UK housing market remains resilient and is bouncing back after a seasonally slow start to 2017, reversing the downward trend seen last month.
“With prices having increased both annually and monthly, albeit only marginally, it is probable that we will continue to see the property market blossom as we enter into spring, in what is traditionally the busiest time of the year.
“However, the continued growth of these numbers could hinge on tomorrow’s Budget announcements and whether or not the government decides to actually tackle the shortage of housing in the UK.
“If they do finally take a step in the right direction price growth could cool to a certain extent, as buyer thirst is quenched with an adequate level of housing stock, although this would be a slow process.”
Annual house price growth marked the smallest increase seen since a 4.6 per cent year-on-year rise in July 2013 and is now half the rate it was in March 2016 when it stood at 10 per cent.
Prices were up 0.1 per cent in February compared to January, ahead of January’s monthly revised 1.1 per cent drop but also softer than an expected 0.4 per cent rise.
The lender warned that house price growth would be curbed this year amid lower consumer spending power and a weaker labour market.
Martin Ellis, Halifax housing economist, said: “Housing demand is being supported by an economy that continues to perform well with employment still expanding.
“Meanwhile, the supply of both new homes and existing properties available for sale remains low. This combination is pushing up prices.
“The annual rate of house price growth has, however, nearly halved over the past 11 months and a sustained period of house price growth in excess of pay rises has made it increasingly difficult for many to purchase a home.
“This development, together with signs of reduced momentum in the jobs market and squeezed consumer spending power, is expected to curb house price growth during 2017.”
