Boulders littered the two lanes. A long line of cars, some pockmarked from falling debris, was at a standstill.

Underneath the photo, the figure skater wrote: "Guess no practice today … p.s. family and everyone is ok."

The 26-year-old, who's aiming for his first Canadian figure skating title this week, grew up in Alaska, and a few weeks ago held on for dear life through his biggest earthquake yet — a 7.0 tremblor that rocked Anchorage.

"When it started shaking, I thought 'Oh OK, it's an earthquake,"' Messing said. "It started shaking more violently, and I was like 'OK, this is getting a little bigger.' Then it felt like a freight train came through and hit us. It felt like the house jumped off the ground. I grabbed (my fiancee) and pulled her under the doorway.

"It was early enough in the morning that it was still pitch black out, so you could just hold on in the dark and listen to everything just start to destroy itself."

Messing has climbed to the top of Canada's men's figure skating rankings with the retirement of three-time world champion Patrick Chan after last winter's Pyeongchang Olympics. He captured silver at Skate Canada International in the fall, then finished fifth in his Grand Prix Final debut in December.

Messing grew up in Alaska, but his mother was born in Edmonton, giving him dual citizenship. He skated for the U.S. as a junior before switching his affiliation to Canada in the 2014-15 season.

He became the first Alaskan Olympian in figure skating when he clinched a spot on Canada's Pyeongchang team.

Messing has lived through earthquakes since he was a kid; they're a fact of life in Alaska. The big one on Nov. 30 crumbled buildings, and virtually melted roads, but there were no deaths. The aftershocks continued for weeks, including 80 nerve-rattling aftershocks that first day alone.

"It does make you look on the brighter side of life," he said.

Messing finds himself in an unfamiliar position at this week's nationals, which will determine the team for the world championships in Japan.

"I don't want to say it's a sad day to see Patrick go, but it is sad to see him go," Messing said. "We're definitely missing something special that he brought to the ice, and it's definitely weird not having him there to look up to, to have someone to chase.

"And the fact I kind of inherited his position coming in here, I have the target on my back now, so it's the first time I've been the person being chased."

Messing, who was a respectable 12th in his Olympic debut in Pyeongchang, will be chased for the title by Nam Nguyen, Roman Sadovsky and Nicolas Nadeau. Stephen Gogolev, who's just 14 but won gold in last month's Junior Grand Prix Final, is also competing in the senior competition here.

"I am trying to approach it the same way, but there is the added pressure," Messing said. "There is a part of you that has to love it, or you're not going to make it anywhere. We all get nervous, but when we get out there, it's the best thing in the world."

While he grew up in the U.S., Messing has strong ties to Canada. His great, great grandfather on his mother's side, Manzo Nagano, was the first Japanese immigrant to Canada, according to the Canadian Encyclopedia, among other historical sources. It's believed he arrived in Victoria in 1877 aboard a British steamer.

There's a mountain peak — Mount Manzo Nagano — named for Messing's famous ancestor in a remote coastal area of northern B.C.

So, winning a Canadian title would "mean the world to me," Messing said.

"I would never have thought I'd be where I am in my skating career without Canada. Even for personal standards of my skating ability, I don't think I could have ever achieved this without Canada," he said. "So to come here and even have a shot at the title, it's heartwarming. And to know (fans are) behind me, it's beautiful. I'm where I want to be, I don't have the words for it … It's great."

Chan's retirement is part of a seismic post-Olympic shift in Canadian skating. Also gone are two-time Olympic champion ice dancers Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir and two-time world pairs champions Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford. Reigning world champion Kaetlyn Osmond is taking the season off competition to ponder her future. With an eye toward a future broadcasting career, Osmond is working with the media this week in Saint John.

Annika Sorenstam has learned a thing or two about what it takes to be the best.

So when the World Golf Hall of Fame member says Canada's Brooke Henderson is well on her way to becoming one of the top players on the LPGA Tour, it makes sense to pay attention.

Henderson's emotional win at the CP Women's Open last month in Regina could be just the beginning, the 72-time winner on the LPGA Tour said in an interview ahead of the final major of the season — the Evian Championship, starting Thursday in Evian-les-Bains, France.

"What Brooke did was an amazing display of golf," Sorenstam said of Henderson's triumph, which ended a 45-year drought for Canadians at their national championship. "If this continues, she will soon be one of the best in the world."

The Canadian paced the field, finishing 21-under par to win the CP Women's Open. She became just the 2nd Canadian women to win the tournament, snapping a 45-year drought. 1:58

Sorenstam, who in 2014 was named the best Swedish female athlete in history, won three times in Sweden during her career. She's also a two-time winner of the Evian Championship, where Henderson will try to put an exclamation mark on a memorable year.

Sorenstam said she likes Henderson's game, which mixes an aggressive approach off the tee with a nice short game.

The combination, she said, is going to be beneficial for the native of Smiths Falls, Ont., for years to come.

"She has gotten off to a quick start in her young career," Sorenstam said of Henderson, who turned 21 on Monday. "I am sure there will be many more wins to follow."

Henderson has unfinished business at the Evian. She finished tied for ninth and tied for 25th in 2016 and 2015, respectively. Last year's tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to weather, and she finished tied for 58th.

"It's a beautiful golf course — usually challenging with the weather — but I think it suits my game well, particularly with how I'm striking the ball right now," said Henderson.

"Hopefully all the pieces come together for the week and I can play well again."

Lou Marsh candidate

With more than $ 1.2 million US earned this season, Henderson sits second on the LPGA Tour money list with seven tournaments left. She's also third on the year=long Race to the CME Globe. If she tops that points list after the CME Group Tour Championship, the final event of the year, she'll win a $ 1-million bonus prize.

Henderson's CP Women's Open victory was her second of the year. She also captured the Lotte Championship in Hawaii in April.

"I think it's finally starting to sink in that I won our national championship, and it's just such an amazing feeling and a dream come true to know that my name will always be on that trophy," said Henderson.

With her win in Regina, Henderson figures to be a strong candidate for the Lou Marsh Trophy, given to Canada's athlete of the year.

The award has been claimed by a golfer only three times: Marlene Streit (1956), Sandra Post (1979), and Mike Weir (2003).

"It's something that would be an incredible achievement and honour to be in the conversation for," said Henderson. "Hopefully my game and my achievements on the course can put me in that position some day."

Henderson now has seven victories since turning professional. The most by a Canadian — male or female — is eight, a record held jointly by George Knudson, Post, and Weir, all of whom accomplished the feat much later in their careers.

Henderson celebrated her birthday at home with her family and said the week off was "definitely needed" after her win and then playing in the Cambia Portland Classic the week after, where she tied for 21st.

"It was nice having a tournament to just roll straight into to try and act as normal as possible, but to just be able to relax for a few days and reflect on everything has been great," she said.

LAS VEGAS — If Brad Gushue and his rink intend on defending their world championship title in 2018, they must navigate a more difficult path to granite greatness than a year ago in Edmonton.

But despite struggling at times this week, Gushue says his St. John’s, N.L., team will hit a different gear in the playoffs.

“I believe we’re the best team in the world. If you look at the last three years, the results undoubtedly prove that,” Gushue said.

“If we play our best tomorrow these teams are going to have to play their best to keep up. And when they go to bed Friday night, they’ll have to think about that. It can be daunting to know if we play our best, they’re not going to have a chance.”

Canada finished third in the round robin after posting a 9-3 record. Sweden’s Niklas Edin finished in a tie for first place with the upstart team from Scotland. Both countries only lost once, but because Sweden beat Scotland, they get the first seed while Scotland places second.

The world curling playoff format has changed. Unlike previous years when the top four teams advanced to the playoff round, now the top six move on.

The first two seeds, Sweden and Scotland, move directly into Saturday’s semifinal games.

Canada will face the United States in one of two Saturday morning quarter-final games.

“The U.S. has been playing strong down the stretch,” Gushue said. “They’re an interesting team to be on the ice with and watch the way they interact and talk out there.”

Redemption will be on the minds of Canada after its round-robin loss to the Americans.

“I think when the bell rings tomorrow we’ll be tough to play against. We’re still the best team in the world even though we’re not at this point firing on all cylinders. But that can change and if it does tomorrow we can win this thing,” Gushue said.

The U.S. won five consecutive games to finish the event and sneak into the playoffs after starting 1-6.

The other quarter-final has Korea playing Norway.

Scotland impressing

The young Scottish team skipped by Bruce Mouat has been on a roll all week.

They put teams on notice early in Vegas when they defeated Gushue in the second game of the bonspiel. They only lost once and are brimming with confidence heading into the semifinal.

“That win over Canada set the tone for us and moving forward in this championship,” Mouat said. “A lot of Canadians might have lifted an eyebrow or two after that performance. That’s what we wanted. We’re here to play.”

Unlike some teams who have talked about Vegas being somewhat of a distracting place to play, Mouat and his team have been soaking up the sun, pool and party.

It seems to be working.

“I love it. I think it’s great. I don’t think it’s a distraction. I think each team has the ability to separate themselves from it all.”

It still feels a little surreal for Mouat who is making his first world championship appearance.

“I’m trying to keep my feet on the ground. I think it’s a special moment for me. This is next level. I enjoy being here and hope I’m here for a while.”

Rewarding mediocrity?

Gushue isn’t a fan of the new playoff format. He says six teams in the playoffs in a 13 team event is too much.

“To have almost 50 per cent of the field get in, you saw it at the women’s, teams at 6-6 make it,” Gushue said. “It’s really rewarding mediocrity.”

Fans of curling are used to seeing what is called a page playoff system — the top two teams play one another with the winner going directly to the final and the third and fourth place teams playing in a quasi-quarter-final game. The winner of that game then plays the loser of the one versus two game.

In other words, Gushue says there is an advantage to playing well during the week.

Now, Gushue and his rink are up against the 6-6 Americans.

“All of the sudden you need two good days. Get into the playoffs with a .500 record and have two of the best days of you life and you’re a world champion. It seems odd to me,” Gushue said.

“In January, I’m going to India for two weeks setting up a girls’ program that I’m really excited about and have been working on for the past six months.

“And then, come March, we start filming season seven of Suits.”

The Suits actress flew to India to address the stigma young women face during menstruation on the countries.

The interview was conducted as Meghan announced her collection for sexy leather brand Reitmans.

Meghan revealed only months after working with the brand that she was quitting as the face of the company.

The Suits actress has modelled in a number of skin tight leather garments for the company, and gave her name to the line. 

The Mail Online claims that Meghan’s team have asked Canadian-brand Reitmans to stop associating the brand with the actress.

Harry and Meghan are both fans of travel and philanthropy – and perhaps this was the key to their courtship. Now the Prince is keen to share his charity work in the continent with the LA-born actress.

The pair are currently planning a trip to Africa, where Prince William proposed to Kate Middleton.

The two hope to visit South Africa in October.

The romantic getaway is timed to take pace as soon Meghan has finished filming the current series of the US drama, according to reports by the Mail on Sunday.
