It’s much more than just an update to Nvidia’s popular DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling) feature, and it could end up defining Nvidia’s next generation much more than the graphics cards themselves.

AMD has been working hard to get its FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) on par with DLSS, and for the past several months, it’s been successful. DLSS 3 looks like it will change that dynamic — and this time, FSR may not be able to catch up anytime soon.

How DLSS 3 works (and how it doesn’t)

A chart showing how Nvidia's DLSS 3 technology works.
Nvidia

You’d be forgiven for thinking that DLSS 3 is a completely new version of DLSS, but it’s not. Or at least, it’s not entirely new. The backbone of DLSS 3 is the same super-resolution technology that’s available in DLSS titles today, and Nvidia will presumably continue improving it with new versions. Nvidia says you’ll see the super-resolution portion of DLSS 3 as a separate option in the graphics settings now.

The new part is frame generation. DLSS 3 will generate an entirely unique frame every other frame, essentially generating seven out of every eight pixels you see. You can see an illustration of that in the flow chart below. In the case of 4K, your GPU only renders the pixels for 1080p and uses that information for not only the current frame but also the next frame.

A chart showing how DLSS 3 reconstructs frames.
Nvidia

Frame generation, according to Nvidia, will be a separate toggle from super resolution. That’s because frame generation only works on RTX 40-series GPUs for now, while the super resolution will continue to work on all RTX graphics cards, even in games that have updated to DLSS 3. It should go without saying, but if half of your frames are completely generated, that’s going to boost your performance by a lot.

Frame generation isn’t just some AI secret sauce, though. In DLSS 2 and tools like FSR, motion vectors are a key input for the upscaling. They describe where objects are moving from one frame to the next, but motion vectors only apply to geometry in a scene. Elements that don’t have 3D geometry, like shadows, reflections, and particles, have traditionally been masked out of the upscaling process to avoid visual artifacts.

Nvidia

Masking isn’t an option when an AI is generating an entirely unique frame, which is where the Optical Flow Accelerator in RTX 40-series GPUs comes into play. It’s like a motion vector, except the graphics card is tracking the movement of individual pixels from one frame to the next. This optical flow field, along with motion vectors, depth, and color, contribute to the AI-generated frame.

It sounds like all upsides, but there’s a big problem with frames generated by the AI: they increase latency. The frame generated by the AI never passes through your PC — it’s a “fake” frame, so you won’t see it on traditional fps readouts in games or tools like FRAPS. So, latency doesn’t go down despite having so many extra frames, and due to the computational overhead of optical flow, the latency actually goes up. Because of that, DLSS 3 requires Nvidia Reflex to offset the higher latency.

Normally, your CPU stores up a render queue for your graphics card to make sure your GPU is never waiting for work to do (that would cause stutters and frame rate drops). Reflex removes the render queue and syncs your GPU and CPU so that as soon as your CPU can send instructions, the GPU starts processing them. When applied over the top of DLSS 3, Nvidia says Reflex can sometimes even result in a latency reduction.

Where AI makes a difference

Microsoft Flight Simulator | NVIDIA DLSS 3 – Exclusive First-Look

AMD’s FSR 2.0 doesn’t use AI, and as I wrote about a while back, it proves that you can get the same quality as DLSS with algorithms instead of machine learning. DLSS 3 changes that with its unique frame generation capabilities, as well as the introduction of optical flow.

Optical flow isn’t a new idea — it’s been around for decades and has applications in everything from video-editing applications to self-driving cars. However, calculating optical flow with machine learning is relatively new due to an increase in datasets to train AI models on. The reason why you’d want to use AI is simple: it produces fewer visual errors given enough training and it doesn’t have as much overhead at runtime.

DLSS is executing at runtime. It’s possible to develop an algorithm, free of machine learning, to estimate how each pixel moves from one frame to the next, but it’s computationally expensive, which runs counter to the whole point of supersampling in the first place. With an AI model that doesn’t require a lot of horsepower and enough training data — and rest assured, Nvidia has plenty of training data to work with — you can achieve optical flow that is high quality and can execute at runtime.

That leads to an improvement in frame rate even in games that are CPU limited. Supersampling only applies to your resolution, which is almost exclusively dependent on your GPU. With a new frame that bypasses CPU processing, DLSS 3 can double frame rates in games even if you have a complete CPU bottleneck. That’s impressive and currently only possible with AI.

Why FSR 2.0 can’t catch up (for now)

FSR and DLSS image quality comparison in God of War.

AMD has truly done the impossible with FSR 2.0. It looks fantastic, and the fact that it’s brand-agnostic is even better. I’ve been ready to ditch DLSS for FSR 2.0 since I first saw it in Deathloop. But as much as I enjoy FSR 2.0 and think it’s a great piece of kit from AMD, it’s not going to catch up to DLSS 3 any time soon.

For starters, developing an algorithm that can track each pixel between frames free of artifacts is tough enough, especially in a 3D environment with dense fine detail (Cyberpunk 2077 is a prime example). It’s possible, but tough. The bigger issue, however, is how bloated that algorithm would need to be. Tracking each pixel through 3D space, doing the optical flow calculation, generating a frame, and cleaning up any mishaps that happen along the way — it’s a lot to ask.

Getting that to run while a game is executing and still providing a frame rate improvement on the level of FSR 2.0 or DLSS, that’s even more to ask. Nvidia, even with dedicated processors and a trained model, still has to use Reflex to offset the higher latency imposed by optical flow. Without that hardware or software, FSR would likely trade too much latency to generate frames.

I have no doubt that AMD and other developers will get there eventually — or find another way around the problem — but that could be a few years down the road. It’s hard to say right now.

What’s easy to say is that DLSS 3 looks very exciting. Of course, we’ll have to wait until it’s here to validate Nvidia’s performance claims and see how image quality holds up. So far, we just have a short video from Digital Foundry showing off DLSS 3 footage (above), which I’d highly recommend watching until we see further third-party testing. From our current vantage point, though, DLSS 3 certainly looks promising.

iPhone 14 satellite connectivity: how it works, what it costs, and more https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-satellite-connectivity-how-it-works-what-it-costs-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-satellite-connectivity-how-it-works-what-it-costs-and-more/#respond Fri, 09 Sep 2022 11:32:29 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/iphone-14-satellite-connectivity-how-it-works-what-it-costs-and-more/ Apple has unveiled its new iPhone 14 lineup, and while the phones mainly feature the usual slate of annual upgrades such as camera and performance improvements, this year’s iPhone models also packed in some exciting and valuable new personal safety features.

Perhaps the most interesting of these is Emergency SOS via satellite, a new feature that could allow iPhone owners to summon help from just about anywhere on the planet — even when traditional cellular networks are unavailable.

Apple

While introducing the feature during its Far Out event on September 7, Apple was quick to point out that cellular coverage is improving all the time. However, company executives conceded that it’s still not hard to find yourself in a situation where you may have little or no signal, especially in remote areas where folks often need emergency assistance.

How Emergency SOS via satellite works

Apple’s new satellite connectivity feature is solely for emergency use. Apple has not turned the iPhone 14 into a satellite phone, and you still won’t be able to make calls or send text messages without traditional cellular connectivity.

In fact, Emergency SOS via satellite is a feature you’ll hopefully never need to use. It’s unlikely you’ll see any settings for it on your iPhone; it remains hidden in the background until you need it.

This is also a fallback emergency system. It only activates when you have no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage available at all — from any carrier. As cool and futuristic as satellite communications sound, calling 911 over your cellular network is still a far more efficient way to call for help. Further, in the U.S. and Canada, you can place a 911 call over any cellular network, whether you’re a subscriber on that network or not; you don’t even need an active SIM or eSIM in your iPhone to do so.

Satellite communications are slower than traditional cellular calls and texts as the signal has to travel a much greater distance. Apple hasn’t said which satellite network it’s using, but it’s most likely the Iridium network, a constellation of 66 satellites orbiting 485 miles above the earth’s surface at 17,000 miles per hour. By contrast, if you have cellular service, you’re likely less than 10 miles away from a cellular tower.

Apple

In practical terms, Apple says that even in ideal conditions — with a direct view of the sky and the horizon — an emergency SOS message will typically take around 15 seconds to transmit via satellite. Add some trees with medium foliage to the mix, and that delay can increase to over a minute.

This brings up another critical point about Emergency SOS via satellite: You need to be outside to use it, with a reasonably clear view of the sky and the horizon. Since Apple didn’t want to add a big and bulky antenna to the iPhone, it needs to be pointed directly at a satellite with an unobstructed line of sight.

Emergency SOS via satellite may not work even if you’re under heavy foliage, and it certainly won’t function indoors or underground. Apple explains that hills, mountains, canyons, and tall structures can also interfere with establishing a satellite connection.

How do I summon help via satellite in an emergency?

Thankfully, Apple has taken these delays into consideration. In an emergency, you want to get help as quickly as possible, and trying to carry on a back-and-forth conversation is not efficient when each message could take a couple of minutes.

Since you obviously can’t see a satellite that’s hundreds of miles in orbit, your iPhone will provide guidance to help point your iPhone in the right direction to pick up an emergency satellite and lock in on it while also keeping your iPhone properly oriented during the emergency session.

Apple

Instead of simply opening up a text messaging window once you’ve established the emergency satellite link, you’ll be asked to answer a series of multiple-choice questions so you can easily describe your situation and provide emergency responders with crucial information. These responses will be sent in the first message along with your Medical ID and emergency contact information, your location and elevation, and the remaining battery life of your iPhone.

Apple

Once that initial request for help has been sent, emergency responders may ask you for more information via standard text messages, but the important thing is that they’ll have everything they need to get started on rescue efforts.

What do I need to use Emergency SOS via satellite?

Emergency SOS via satellite is exclusive to the iPhone 14, and the good news is that it’s available on every iPhone 14 model, from the 6.1-inch iPhone 14 to the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Although a rumor last year suggested that the iPhone 13 could have had the necessary hardware to support satellite communications, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Analysts picked up on a new 5G band being added to the iPhone 13, and some incorrectly presumed that this would be for satellite connectivity. The confusion resulted from the 5G frequency, known as band 53, being licensed exclusively to Globalstar, a satellite communications company. However, like most communication technology companies, Globalstar does more than just satellites; it also operates private terrestrial LTE and 5G networks using this band in places like the Port of Seattle and the New York Power Authority.

Apple

Emergency SOS via satellite isn’t part of the new Apple Watch models either — not even the Apple Watch Ultra. Mark Gurman shared earlier this year that Apple is working on bringing this feature to the Apple Watch. However, he also added that it might not make the cut for this year’s lineup. Whether we’ll see it appear on a 2023 Apple Watch remains an open question, but considering the complex technology involved, Apple likely still has some work to do to get it to fit into the wearable.

Lastly, iPhone 14 models sold in mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao won’t support the Emergency SOS via satellite feature. It’s not entirely clear why this is the case; it could be related to these models lacking support for eSIM or using other cellular frequencies that interfere with satellite communications. It also may simply be politics — it’s likely no coincidence that Huawei announced its own satellite-powered SOS feature earlier this week, only a day before Apple’s iPhone 14 event. Huawei’s system is also powered by Beidou, China’s state-owned GPS and communications satellite network.

Where can I use Emergency SOS via satellite?

Technically, Emergency SOS via satellite should let you call for help from anywhere on the globe. The problem is that actually getting that help is a bit more complicated as it relies on other factors, such as whether emergency responders in a given country or region are even equipped for it.

Person holding iPhone 14 searching for Emergency SOS satellite.
Apple

As a result, Emergency SOS via satellite is launching exclusively in the U.S. and Canada. This includes Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, but not Guam or American Samoa.

This refers to where Emergency SOS is physically available. It has nothing to do with where you’re from, what region your iPhone is set to, or what carrier you normally use. International travelers who visit the U.S. and Canada can use Emergency SOS via satellite, as long as their iPhone 14 supports it; as noted earlier, those purchased in mainland China, Hong Kong, or Macao are sadly excluded.

Apple also notes that Emergency SOS via satellite might not work in extreme northern locations — those above 62 degrees north. That area encompasses most of Canada’s three northern territories and much of Alaska.

Emergency SOS via satellite also only supports American English, American Spanish, and French Canadian, and only Latin characters are supported in emergency text messages sent via satellite.

When will Emergency SOS via satellite be available?

Note that Emergency SOS via satellite will not be available when the iPhone 14 launches on September 16. Apple says it will require an iOS 16 software update expected to arrive in November 2022.

Based on Apple’s past track record, we may not even see it in iOS 16.1, as Apple typically launches that in October. Expect it to arrive in iOS 16.2.

How much does Emergency SOS via satellite cost?

Perhaps one of the most exciting and surprising things about Apple’s satellite communications feature is the cost; Apple is offering it at no extra charge — sort of.

Technically, Apple isn’t saying there’s no charge for the service. In fact, the company is implying that it may eventually cost something — it’s merely including it for free for two years “with the activation of any iPhone 14 model.”

Apple hasn’t said what it will cost after that. It’s possible the company hasn’t even decided yet, which is fair as it has two years to figure that out. However, by comparison, Garmin charges a $ 15 monthly subscription fee for satellite connectivity on its inReach devices.

Either way, the good news is you don’t need to worry about recurring fees for at least two years.

What else can I use iPhone 14 satellite communications for?

Apple is using its satellite connectivity to power one other feature that could come in handy even when you’re not in an emergency situation.

With the Find My app on an iPhone 14, you can now share your location via satellite, so your friends and family know where you are even when you’re far off the grid.

Apple

Unlike using your iPhone on cellular or Wi-Fi, where your location gets updated automatically in the background, you’ll have to share your location manually when using satellite communications. It’s not yet clear exactly how this will work or when it will be available; presumably, there will be a button somewhere in the iOS 16 Find My app, but Apple hasn’t said if this feature will be available at release or if we’ll have to wait until the rest of the Emergency SOS via satellite capabilities come in the November iOS 16 update.

‘UK vaccine works’ Matt Hancock hits back at EU ’12 wk dose gap gives STRONGER protection’ https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/#respond Wed, 03 Feb 2021 09:49:48 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/uk-vaccine-works-matt-hancock-hits-back-at-eu-12-wk-dose-gap-gives-stronger-protection/

France has followed Germany and Austria’s decision to not administer the AstraZeneca vaccine to anyone over the age of 64, stating that there was not enough data on the Oxford vaccine’s effectiveness on the over-65 age group. However, the Health Secretary backed the UK’s decision and stated that the three-month gap between AstraZeneca doses leads to greater protection from the coronavirus.

Mr Hancock said: “The news overnight on the Oxford vaccine demonstrates that the vaccine protects you and it helps to cut the transmission of the disease across the whole community.

“It shows that the vaccine works and it works well.

“This figure of a two-thirds reduction in transmission is better than I expected.

“It is really good news for everybody and it just shows that the strategy has been right of backing those vaccines.

“The other finding in this report is that with the 12-week gap between the first and second dose you actually get a stronger overall protection than if you have a shorter gap.”

On Wednesday morning, Mr Hancock also admitted that the Pfizer vaccine needs two doses in order to reach the desired efficacy levels against the South African coronavirus variant.

The Health Secretary stated that some protection against the variant is good news as he had originally feared the UK’s vaccines would not work at all against it.

He said: “The fact that there is some protection of the South African variant is good news, there was a fear that the vaccines would not work at all against that variant whereas there does seem to be some protection.”

He added: “Of course against these new variants we made need boosters of a slightly adjusted vaccine as well in the same way we do for flu each year.

“We are working with the companies on developing those and ensuring that they can get regulated and be used more quickly than the first time around.”

SNL Video: John Krasinski Is Tom Brady, Cecily Strong Is Marjorie Taylor Greene in ‘What Still Works?’ Cold Open https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-john-krasinski-is-tom-brady-cecily-strong-is-marjorie-taylor-greene-in-what-still-works-cold-open/ https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-john-krasinski-is-tom-brady-cecily-strong-is-marjorie-taylor-greene-in-what-still-works-cold-open/#respond Sun, 31 Jan 2021 05:28:07 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/snl-video-john-krasinski-is-tom-brady-cecily-strong-is-marjorie-taylor-greene-in-what-still-works-cold-open/

Is America broken beyond repair? That was the question on Kate McKinnon’s mind in Saturday Night Live‘s first sketch of 2021.

“Hello and welcome to What Still Works, where we look at every part of society and wonder ‘What still works?’ It’s a new year and we have a new president, so some things should work — but do they?” McKinnon asked.

The first topic was government — and already, McKinnon had her doubts. For insight, she brought out Marjorie Taylor Greene, the wackadoo congresswoman from Georgia who’s been promoting QAnon conspiracy theories. The U.S. representative sat down and offered McKinnon a gun, then ran through a series of grotesque conspiracies regarding the Parkland school shooting, the September 11 attacks and California wildfires.

Next up, McKinnon checked in on the stock market with the new majority shareholder of GameStop, Derrick Boner. ‘Nuff said.

Afterwards, social media CEOs Jack Dorsey and Mark Zuckerberg dropped by to discuss how Twitter and Facebook have played a hand in spreading misinformation. “Fundamentally, Facebook still works,” Zuckerberg argued. “Not only does it help form communities online, it has helped people meet and connect in real life. For example, at the Capitol!”

After Zuckerberg short-circuited, McKinnon checked in on the coronavirus vaccine rollout with O.J. Simpson, who is among the three percent of the population who have already received the vaccine while teachers and those suffering from longterm lung conditions remain on the waitlist.

For her final topic, McKinnon asked, “Is Tom Brady working?” There with his thoughts was the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ star quarterback (played by this weekend’s SNL host, John Krasinski), who acknowledged that no one’s rooting for him heading into Super Bowl LV. Once he bolted, McKinnon acknowledged the absurdity of the cold open.

“I’ve been Kate McKinnon, as myself, slowly losing my mind like all of you,” she said. “Stay strong — or weak. Weak is a great option, too.”

Yet another Game of Thrones iteration reportedly is in development, this time at HBO Max.

The streaming service is in the very early stages of development on an animated drama that would cater to an adult audience and would have the same feel as the original series, per The Hollywood Reporter.

If the project comes to fruition, it would join several other Thrones-related offshoots in various stages of development. A prequel titled House of the Dragon was ordered to series at HBO in late 2019 and will follow Daenerys’ (and Jon’s) ancestors in House Targaryen as the storied family begins its legendary fall. The series was co-created by Thrones author George R.R. Martin and Ryan J. Condal (Colony), and it stars Matt Smith (Doctor Who), Paddy Considine (The Outsider) and Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel). Thrones director Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will serve as co-showrunners.

In addition, the premium cable network also reportedly is developing a series based on Martin’s Dunk and Egg novellas, which chronicle the adventures of Dunk (aka Ser Duncan the Tall) and Egg (Aegon V Targaryen).

Reps for HBO Max declined to comment for this story.

The thought of an animated Thrones series aimed at adults made us wonder: Would you want to watch such a spinoff? So weigh in via the poll below, then hit the comments with your thoughts about the potential venture!

CBS All Access hopes to put another maniac on the floor.

The streaming service is developing a series adaptation of Flashdance, the 1983 film that launched Jennifer Beals’ career.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reboot will follow a young Black woman “with ballet dreams and a strip club reality” who is trying to find her place in the world “while navigating romance, money, art, friendship and how to love herself.” (In the original film, Beals’ character was a welder at a steel mill who dreamed of becoming a professional dancer.)

Lynda Obst, who served as an associate producer on the original Flashdance, is attached to exec-produce the potential series. Angela Robinson (The L Word, True Blood) is also on board as an EP and will direct the pilot, while Tracy McMillan (Good Girls Revolt) will write the script.

As previously reported, CBS All Access will rebrand as Paramount+ in early 2021, as part of a relaunch of the streaming service that will combine original content with shows from CBS and cable outlets MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Paramount Network and Nickelodeon. (Paramount Pictures was also Flashdance‘s original distributor.)

black-ish Spinoff old-ish in the Works With Laurence Fishburne, Jenifer Lewis https://briefnews.eu/black-ish-spinoff-old-ish-in-the-works-with-laurence-fishburne-jenifer-lewis/ https://briefnews.eu/black-ish-spinoff-old-ish-in-the-works-with-laurence-fishburne-jenifer-lewis/#respond Wed, 09 Sep 2020 00:02:34 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/black-ish-spinoff-old-ish-in-the-works-with-laurence-fishburne-jenifer-lewis/

ABC is adding another entry to the expanding black-ish franchise: Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis are set to reprise their roles in a new spinoff titled old-ish, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The series, which is currently in development at the Alphabet network, will be penned by black-ish creator Kenya Barris, who will also serve as an executive producer. It centers on Fishburne’s Earl and Lewis’ Ruby — the parents of Anthony Anderson’s black-ish character Dre — as they give love a second chance. “When they move to a rapidly gentrifying neighborhood of L.A., they’ll meet characters who represent the old and new faces of the community as they try to make it work as a married couple. Again.”

Fishburne and Lewis have played Earl and Ruby on black-ish since the ABC comedy’s freshman season back in 2014. Fishburne has been recurring as Earl (aka Pops) for all six seasons, while Lewis has been a series regular since Season 2 after recurring during the first season.

If it makes it on the air, old-ish would be the third spinoff to spring from black-ish. grown-ish, starring Yara Shahidi as Dre’s daughter Zoey, is about to enter its fourth season on Freeform, and mixed-ish — a flashback to the ’80s childhood of Tracee Ellis Ross’ Bow — debuted on ABC last fall and is slated to return for a second season.

The son of Poseidon is ready to make a splash at Disney+.

Author Rick Riordan announced on Twitter on Thursday that he is helping to develop a TV series adaptation of his Percy Jackson & The Olympians YA book series.

After making the announcement in a short video alongside his wife Becky (below), Riordan said in a follow-up statement, “We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in Season 1.”

Promising that he and his wife would be “involved in every aspect of the show,” Riordan said, “It’s going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!”

The Percy Jackson series follows the titular teen as he comes to realize that he father was no mortal but the Greek god Poseidon, king of the seas. In the first book, The Lightning Thief, Percy sets out to find Zeus’ stolen lightning bolt.

In a big-screen Lightning Thief adaptation and its sequel, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, Logan Lerman (Hunters) played Percy, while Alexandra Daddario (White Collar) and Brandon T. Jackson (Mr. Robinson) respectively played Athena’s daughter, Annabeth, and Percy’s satyr protector, Grover.

Justice League Dark Series in the Works at HBO Max, From J.J. It looks like the Green Lanterns will have some super friends over at HBO Max.

Five months after it was announced that Greg Berlanti was series based on characters from the iconic Green Lantern comic, HBO Max has made a production commitment to “a major series based on DC characters in the Justice League Dark Universe — one of three new projects for the upcoming streamer from J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot shingle.

No further details were shared.

The other Bad Robot orders include a horror-thriller series inspired by and featuring iconic characters from Stephen King’s The Shining.

“What an amazing start to our association with the wildly imaginative Bad Robot team under J.J. and Katie,” HBO Max CCO Kevin Reilly said in a statement. “What could be better than an original J.J. idea and then Warner Bros. letting them loose on iconic I.P. from Stephen King and the DC Universe and to provide more must-have programming on HBO Max.”

Berlanti’s aforementioned Green Lantern series was still “in the early stages” as of January, TVLine previously reported, and “is going to span several decades and focus on the origin story of two major Green Lanterns on Earth while going into the story in space and Green Lantern favorite character Sinestro.”
