Why hundreds of Twitter workers are fleeing the company https://briefnews.eu/why-hundreds-of-twitter-workers-are-fleeing-the-company/ https://briefnews.eu/why-hundreds-of-twitter-workers-are-fleeing-the-company/#respond Wed, 21 Sep 2022 11:32:23 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/why-hundreds-of-twitter-workers-are-fleeing-the-company/ It's Wednesday. I'm your host, Jordan Parker Erb. And you, reader, are in for lots of tech news.

But first, with Climate Week underway here in New York City, I wanted to highlight a major project from Insider: Our inaugural Climate Action 30, a list of global leaders working toward climate solutions.

From social media influencers to startup execs, each honoree on the list shares the progress they're making to achieve their climate goals. It's a great mix of leaders — and well worth a read. Check it out here.

Now, let's get started.

Elon Musk.
Elon Musk.

1. Twitter is facing an exodus of hundreds of workers. Two months after Elon Musk declared his intent to acquire Twitter in a $ 44 billion deal, the billionaire spoke directly with employees at the company. During that meeting, Musk pitched his vision for the business. Since then, hundreds of staff have fled the social media giant.

  • Musk's meeting with Twitter employees covered everything from aliens to layoffs, but did little to reassure workers, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Employees had already expressed frustration with the deal reached in April, and sources say around 100 workers left the company in the weeks that followed.
  • The trend of increased attrition only exacerbated as Musk and Twitter embarked on an ongoing legal battle. According to the Twitter workers, who asked not to be identified, the business saw a net loss of more than 700 full-time staff as of September.
  • But the legal saga isn't over yet. Twitter is about to get its first chance to question Elon Musk under oath regarding his decision to back out of the deal.

Why staff are leaving Twitter.

FTC wants to protect gig workers from ‘unfair or deceptive’ algorithms https://briefnews.eu/ftc-wants-to-protect-gig-workers-from-unfair-or-deceptive-algorithms/ https://briefnews.eu/ftc-wants-to-protect-gig-workers-from-unfair-or-deceptive-algorithms/#respond Thu, 15 Sep 2022 23:03:38 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/ftc-wants-to-protect-gig-workers-from-unfair-or-deceptive-algorithms/ The Federal Trade Commission is making its own bid to protect gig workers against exploitation. The regulator has adopted a policy statement detailing how it will tackle gig workers' problems. The FTC plans to step in when there are misrepresentations about pay, costs, benefits and work terms. Officials also expect to intervene with "unfair or deceptive" algorithms, harsh contracts and anti-competitive behavior such as wage fixing and monopoly-creating mergers.

The Commission said the classification of workers wouldn't affect enforcement, so companies can't avoid repercussions by classifying people as contractors instead of employees. Violators may have to pay fines and change their practices, and the FTC could partner with other government bodies (such as the Justice Department and National Labor Relations Board) to address issues.

There are gaps. It could be difficult for the FTC to prove algorithm-driven abuse, for instance, and it's not clear which non-contractual "restraints" might hurt workers' freedom of movement. However, this could still serve as a warning to gig companies that might hide steep operating costs, fight unionization efforts or collude with rivals to keep wages low.

The FTC isn't alone in hoping to improve the lot of gig workers. A bipartisan measure in Congress, introduced to the House and Senate this February, is meant to provide portable benefits to gig workers. Last year, the Labor Department revoked a rule that made it harder to protect those workers' labor rights. States and cities have also filed lawsuits and otherwise taken efforts to bolster working conditions. However, the FTC's policy provides an extra, nationwide safeguard that might further discourage attempts to exploit the gig economy.

Bernie Sanders blocks Republican proposal to override workers and stop a railroad strike: ‘It is time for Congress to stand on the side of workers for a change’ https://briefnews.eu/bernie-sanders-blocks-republican-proposal-to-override-workers-and-stop-a-railroad-strike-it-is-time-for-congress-to-stand-on-the-side-of-workers-for-a-change/ https://briefnews.eu/bernie-sanders-blocks-republican-proposal-to-override-workers-and-stop-a-railroad-strike-it-is-time-for-congress-to-stand-on-the-side-of-workers-for-a-change/#respond Wed, 14 Sep 2022 22:36:45 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/bernie-sanders-blocks-republican-proposal-to-override-workers-and-stop-a-railroad-strike-it-is-time-for-congress-to-stand-on-the-side-of-workers-for-a-change/ Bernie Sanders
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont.

  • Senator Bernie Sanders blocked a Republican resolution to avert a rail strike and override workers.
  • Republicans want Congress to step in and enact contract recommendations, even if workers don't agree.
  • Sanders said that workers deserve paid sick leave, which is the demand holding up agreements.

Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont on Wednesday blocked a Republican proposal to push through an agreement for rail workers and prevent a potentially economy-stopping national strike.

The GOP-backed resolution would forgo workers' demands to be able to call out sick or for family emergencies. As the strike looms, Amtrak has canceled cross-country trips, and the Biden administration is scrambling  to help broker a deal.

"The CEOs in the freight rail industry need to understand that they cannot have it all," Sanders said during a Wednesday floor speech. "The rail industry must agree to a contract that is fair and is just. It is time for Congress to stand on the side of workers for a change and not just the heads of large multinational corporations."

Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Roger Wicker of Mississippi wanted Congress to pass a set of recommendations from a presidentially-appointed bipartisan panel and avert a strike, even if workers did not voluntarily agree to a deal.

"There are mechanisms that have been in the law for a long time to allow Congress to step in and prevent the economic disaster that would ensue," Wicker told Insider earlier on Wednesday. "I think it's time to invoke that provisional law."

The US Chamber of Commerce, which represents business interests, estimated a shutdown would cost the economy $ 2 billion a day. John Drake, VP of transportation, infrastructure and supply chain policy at the Chamber of Commerce, told Insider in a statement that he "welcomes" the Republican resolution.

But the proposal would potentially overrule workers' decision on their contract, which they've been bargaining since 2019, should workers not reach a voluntary agreement with rail carriers. Workers are set to strike on Friday if they do not reach an agreement; unions and rail carriers have been in discussions facilitated by Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh and the Department of Labor throughout Wednesday. However, Congress taking action would force a new deal and avert a strike.

Sanders, Wicker, and Burr sparred over the workers' demands, with Sanders emphasizing that workers should get paid for time out sick — and a say in their contract.

"I wonder if the CEOs and top executives of the railroads would get fired if they got sick or had a medical emergency in their families," Sanders said. "I doubt it very much."

Sanders noted that rail workers would be entitled to no sick days, either paid or unpaid, under the current set of recommendations from the presidential panel. That's proven to be a hardline issue for the set of unions who haven't signed on to the tentative agreement.

"The Burr-Wicker resolution would take these fundamental rights away from workers," he said.

Burr said that the resolution is now in the hands of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, and expressed confidence Republicans could lend most of the votes needed to pass the resolution. It would need 60 votes to cross the filibuster threshold, an amount of support it's very unlikely to garner. Ten Senate Democrats would need to join every Senate Republican for the measure to pass.

"I don't think anyone wants a strike or a lockout," Sanders said. "We hope that a settlement will be reached in the next day. In my view, if we reach a settlement, I would hope that the railroads — which are making huge profits — treat their workers with the respect they deserve."

Forget quiet quitting: Workers say they’re acting their wage https://briefnews.eu/forget-quiet-quitting-workers-say-theyre-acting-their-wage/ https://briefnews.eu/forget-quiet-quitting-workers-say-theyre-acting-their-wage/#respond Wed, 07 Sep 2022 11:41:43 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/forget-quiet-quitting-workers-say-theyre-acting-their-wage/ worker taking a break outside
  • The Internet and world of work has been in an uproar over the concept of "quiet quitting."
  • In essence, it's just workers doing their job as written, for the pay they receive.
  • Some workers are rebranding the concept as "acting your wage."

When Billy was working warehouse night shifts during the pandemic, he had a lot of free time. His responsibilities were straightforward, and basically just involved making sure everything was running as it should.

He was bored.

That's when the Ireland-based, 30-something decided to pivot from letting his mind be idle during work. Instead he turned to a list of books he wanted to read, but had never found the time — and started listening to audiobooks throughout the night.

"I'm earning a wage, I'm turning up for work. I'm getting my few responsibilities done while at the same time bringing something from it," said Billy, whose last name is kept private, but known to Insider.

He was "acting his wage" — something that's recently caught fire amidst the Great Rethinking of work.

A new term has popped up for simply doing your job and nothing else: Quiet quitting, which was based on Insider's Aki Ito's reporting on coasting culture.

But workers argue that a different term — "acting your wage" —  might better encapsulate what they're doing.

"It's not "quiet quitting," progressive political organizing group Our Revolution wrote on Twitter. "It's acting your wage."

"Act your wage" is not the savings-friendly board game from Dave Ramsey. It's a "rebranding" of quiet quitting, and one that centers the people who are doing the actual work. When workers "quiet quit," or act their wage, they're doing their job as written and compensated. While a straightforward concept, the phrase has caught internet fire, with managers fretting and saying quiet quitters will be the first on the chopping block.

"It's basically when your workday is over, you are done with work, and when your workday is going on, you do what you were asked to do and what you are being paid to do," Kate, a corporate IT worker in her early 30s, told Insider. "So it really is just doing your job. It seems that everyone is upset that people are not wanting to do jobs that are not their jobs as much as they used to."

But all of the ruckus over quiet quitting reflected more on managers than workers, spotlighting that many employers had expected overwork for years — and that employees weren't going to stand for it anymore.

"Acting your wage" also comes as pay skyrockets, but doesn't keep pace with sky-high inflation, especially in contrast to how much CEO pay has ballooned. A report from the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies found that, at 300 low-paying firms, CEOs make 670 times more than their workers. At 106 of those firms workers' median pay did not keep pace with inflation.

With prices on the rise, workers expect more from their jobs. A July survey from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York found that the lowest average wage survey respondents would accept for a new role, what's called the reservation wage, has reached $ 72,873 — a slight dip from the series high of $ 73,283.

But workers aren't actually getting that much for new roles. The average full-time job offer wage was $ 60,764 over the last four months. So, as employers want more, employees aren't getting what they think they deserve.

Billy said that the backlash to quiet quitting and acting your wage is "hilarious," and that things like social media have allowed workers to see through it and be more critical of the pushback.

"When you're put into a workplace, you're put into a box, it's somebody else's box," Billy said. He added: "But there are ways that we can control our workplaces. There are lots and lots of ways that we can even in small ways, we can find victories."

As for him, he was able to power through Karl Marx's economic tome "Das Kapital" while working. It only took four weeks.

New Grey’s Anatomy/Station 19 Promo Salutes the Essential Workers ‘Who Always Show Up to Save the Day’ https://briefnews.eu/new-greys-anatomy-station-19-promo-salutes-the-essential-workers-who-always-show-up-to-save-the-day/ https://briefnews.eu/new-greys-anatomy-station-19-promo-salutes-the-essential-workers-who-always-show-up-to-save-the-day/#respond Thu, 08 Oct 2020 16:41:17 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/new-greys-anatomy-station-19-promo-salutes-the-essential-workers-who-always-show-up-to-save-the-day/

Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 got real in the promo released Thursday ahead of the sister series’ November 12 premieres. The clip, you see, doesn’t just feature the ABC shows’ fictional life savers, it also shines a spotlight on actual essential workers from across the US.

“We all have heroes,” begins Grey’s leading lady Ellen Pompeo’s voiceover, “people we aspire to be… the ones who fight… who help us to survive…

“When it matters, the ones who always show up to save the day,” she concludes. “Thank you.”

It’s not just the video that’s paying tribute to essential workers, either; Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy and Season 4 of Station 19 — which are kicking off with a two-hour crossover event — are also being produced in their honor. “This season, our work is dedicated to the healthcare workers who put their lives on the line every day to try to save ours,” explains Krista Vernoff, showrunner for both dramas. “Wear a mask, save someone else’s life.”

In an Instagram post, Pompeo added that “since we shut down filming [in March], 7,000 healthcare workers have died from Covid. I dedicate my Season 17 to all who have fallen and to every one of you who by the grace of God is still standing…

“This season is for you with humility and a bit of humor to get us through,” she continued, “and endless amounts of gratitude. I hope we do you proud.”

Previously, Vernoff told TVLine that the pandemic would play into both series. It’s “a whole new world for our hospital and for all of our characters.” Regardless, she promised that at least Station 19 was moving into a lighter season than its previous one. “The team pulls together and finds a lot of joy despite the heaviness of the world.”

“You don’t think there should be any compensation from the government to make up for that?”

“I think the government should monitor it better and make people more aware when this quarantine is going to come in,” the guest replied.

‘Why are we doing this?’ Dr Hilary blasts selfish footballers insulting health workers https://briefnews.eu/why-are-we-doing-this-dr-hilary-blasts-selfish-footballers-insulting-health-workers/ https://briefnews.eu/why-are-we-doing-this-dr-hilary-blasts-selfish-footballers-insulting-health-workers/#respond Tue, 07 Apr 2020 08:20:26 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/why-are-we-doing-this-dr-hilary-blasts-selfish-footballers-insulting-health-workers/

Dr Hilary, 66, was on hand to join Piers Morgan, 55, and Susanna Reid, 49, on the show yesterday as they continued to discuss the current coronavirus pandemic. Amongst the discussion on the Monday edition of Good Morning Britain was how some members of the public were still defying the guidelines implemented by the Government to try and combat COVID-19. However, the medic couldn’t help but slam those who were seemingly breaking the lockdown just after Piers ranted about famous footballers flouting the rules.

Last week, it was reported Aston Villa star Jack Grealish, 24, had attended a party, just hours after posting a video urging football fans to stay indoors.

Manchester City player Kyle Walker, 29, has also issued an apology after breaching the lockdown measures and is now facing disciplinary action from the club.

Referring to the players in the public eye flouting the rules, Piers couldn’t get over their behaviour and didn’t hold back in letting viewers of the ITV show know exactly what he thought.

As he continued his rant, the host was interrupted as Dr Hilary wanted to share his opinion on the matter and urged those watching at home to stay indoors to help health workers.

The medical professional said as he interjected on the host’s speech: “How do people think front line workers feel when they see what’s going on amongst some members of the public going out, flouting the guidance?

“Talking about the hypocrisy of some people and they’re putting their lives on the line.

“A lot of them are thinking, ‘Why are we doing this? Why do we look after a public that actually puts us at risk?’”

Explaining why it was vital for health workers to get the support of the public, Dr Hilary added: “The morale is really important. If we don’t look after the morale of the staff, some of them will walk away.”

“If you’re going to apply the logic of rich people, you need to divvy up, Mr Hancock, look in your own cabinet.

“Get the millionaires there to contribute or to cut their salaries. If that’s your logic, if that’s your yardstick that because footballers are rich we have to hold them accountable, then look in your own backyard.

“I don’t like the way Matt Hancock keeps targeting football players, it’s unfair on most of them.

Piers then moved on to discuss the antics of Jack and Karl, who he has voiced disapproval of their behaviour several times before.

Claiming they were “role models,” the host said it was “utterly shameful” they seemed to break the lockdown measures.

“Other players, I think, have to get a grip of some of the younger more wayward ones and say this matters.”

The host said the repercussions of the footballer’s behaviour would “tarnish” the sport and supporters were “not going to put up with” the disregard for the rules.

“It’s disgusting,” he declared.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
