The post-Leslie Jones era of Saturday Night Live kicked off this weekend with four-time host Woody Harrelson and the return of a famous alumna. The Season 45 premiere began with a toothless impeachment-themed sketch. That was followed by a lackluster opening monologue that painted Harrelson as a so-called fashionista. Thankfully, the episode found its footing — and gave at least one new cast member a chance to shine — after the first commercial break, when the show returned with a cameo-filled debate parody that really, really should have served as the cold open. Not mentioned during the season opener was Shane Gillis, the almost-cast member who was fired over racist and homophobic remarks and then threw shade at the sketch-comedy series by saying he was “always more of a MADtv guy anyway.” The episode also lacked in Pete Davidson; the longtime cast member did not appear in a single sketch, and was not there for the goodnights. Busy with The Suicide Squad…? BEST: DNC TOWN HALL
BEST: APPLE-PICKING AD
HONORABLE MENTION: LOCKER ROOM
WORST: INSIDE THE BELTWAY
WORST: ROADSIDE MUSEUM
What were your favorite sketches this week? And what missed the mark? Watch all of the highlights (and lowlights) above, then grade the episode in our poll. If the phrase “Woody Harrelson as Archie Bunker” is at all up your alley, you’ve come to the right place. ABC is staging one-night-only revivals of two iconic Norman Lear sitcoms, All in the Family and The Jeffersons, Jimmy Kimmel announced during his show on Thursday. Airing Wednesday, May 22 at 8/7c, the 90-minute live event stars Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei as All in the Family‘s Archie and Edith Bunker (originally played by Carroll O’Connor and Jean Stapleton), along with Ellie Kemper as Gloria Stivic (originally played by Sally Struthers). The Jeffersons‘ portion of the special features Jamie Foxx and Wanda Sykes as George and Louise Jefferson (originally played by Sherman Hemsley and Isabel Sanford), plus Will Ferrell as Tom Willis (originally played by Franklin Cover) and Justina Machado as Florence Johnston (originally played by Marla Gibbs). Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s All in the Family and The Jeffersons will be hosted by Lear and Kimmel, and directed by the legendary James Burrows. Executive producers include Ferrell, Brent Miller, Adam McKay and Justin Theroux. “They have said over and over again that these two shows were meant for the ’70s and would not work today. We disagree with them and are here to prove, with two great casts depicting All in the Family and The Jeffersons, the timelessness of human nature,” Lear said in a statement. “I cannot wait to see what these glorious performers make in our time of these indelible characters, and I couldn’t be more grateful for Jimmy Kimmel, Sony and ABC for their collective willingness to conceive and pursue this never-been-done-before event.” Your thoughts on ABC’s throwback event? Drop ’em in a comment below.
Far superior to the cold open, though not quite a home run. Bowen Yang’s Andrew Yang impression was serviceable, but fleeting. And while Maya Rudolph nailed Kamala Harris’ mannerisms, the runner about Harris leading her own Rizzoli & Isles-esque TV show went to the well maybe once too often. Larry David got the single best line, when Bernie Sanders described turning on his TV set (“If I accidentally hit ‘Input,’ that’s a whole day!”), but it was new cast member Chloe Fineman who stole the sketch during her all-too-brief appearance as an “astral projection” of wackadoo candidate Marianne Williamson.
Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon played perfectly off each other as the very single sisters who maintain the Upstate tourist trap, where “for just $ 45, you can bring home $ 10 worth of apples.” The tourist testimonials by Yang, Melissa Villaseñor and Chris Redd were spot-on, and Harrelson was a hoot as Hank, the troubled farmhand who came with the land.
Heidi Gardner’s first showcase as a full-time cast member wasn’t great, but she was great in it. Her performance as the football coach’s much younger wife (“Class of 2018!”) was solid, and her delivery helped sell some of the not-so-funny jokes about his mutilated genitals.
Technical difficulties elevate this one to “best-worst” status. Aidy Bryant breaking character after the stagehand accidentally steps into frame was, in a word, perfect. And I’m pretty sure it was Aidy, not her character, telling them to “go to commercial.” The myriad gaffes took an otherwise forgettable satire of Sunday-morning political punditry and turned it into a memorable disaster.
We all knew where this one was going, and that’s half the fun. But everyone involved was too low energy. In order to sell such a ridiculous, one-joke premise, the performances needed to be heightened; Harrelson’s character, in particular, should have had a much bigger reaction to the sketch’s inevitable climax. Everyone was asleep at the wheel, and then it just… ended.

In 2003, the Bush White House sold America on the Iraq War under the pretense that Iraq was harboring weapons of mass destruction. Not long after, we all learned that claim wasn’t true, but at the time, most journalists didn’t seem to realize the truth. Shock and Awe is about a two journalists who did. Watch the Shock and Awe trailer below.
The Post was the first “hero journalist” movie of the Trump era, but it won’t be the last. Rob Reiner‘s Shock and Awe looks like it wants to be the All the President’s Men of the 21st century, with a pair of journalists crusading for the truth. And even though this film is focused on the Bush administration, it’s clear that Reiner and company are more than ready to draw parallels to the current administration of Donald Trump. A scene in this trailer seems to underscore that in big, bold strokes when someone shouts, “The president is lying!”
Shock and Awe is based on the true story – although probably heavily fictionalized for the film – of journalists at the Knight Rider newspaper who were among the only reporters to “get Iraq right.” When interviewed about this subject, John Walcott, McClatchy Newspapers Washington Bureau Chief, told Huffington Post:
“Well we certainly didn’t see anyone doing the same kinds of stories, with the exception of some stories by Walter Pincus at the Washington Post, and much, much later after the Los Angeles Times got onto Curveball. But during the period when I guess, arguably, it mattered, when it could have and should have been a debate about whether to engage in this war, I think we felt that we were fairly lonely.”
Walcott added: “There wasn’t any reporting in the rest of the press corps, there was stenography. The administration would make an assertion, people would make an assertion, people would write it down as if it were true, and put it in the newspaper or on television.”
I’m sure that statement will sound familiar to anyone following politics in the year 2018. It’s almost as if we as a nation haven’t learned a damn thing or something…but I digress.
Shock and Awe has a lot of potential, and Woody Harrelson and James Marsden are both strong actors, and co-star Tommy Lee Jones is one of the best in the business. The wild card here is director Rob Reiner. I like Reiner, and he’s made a few fine films in the past. But he’s had far more misses than hits in the last few years. His most recent movie, LBJ – which also featured Harrelson and Marsden, and was written by Shock and Awe writer Joey Hartstone – was kind of terrible. That doesn’t inspire much confidence here.
Shock and Awe will play exclusively on DIRECTV from June 14 to July 11, before opening in theaters July 13, 2018.
The film is based on the true events of Knight Ridder journalists who were the only ones who “got it right” in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War when they questioned the true nature of the Bush White House’s justification for the conflict.

Is Carnage in Venom, the film featuring Tom Hardy as everyone’s favorite lethal protector? There have been rumblings that the character would pop up in the Ruben Fleischer-directed film, and now a new rumor suggests that Woody Harrelson will be playing the character. More on the Woody Harrelson Carnage rumor below.
Take this rumor with a nice heaping dose of salt, but Bleeding Cool claims to have learned that Woody Harrelson is playing Carnage in Venom. A source has told the site in “a very confirm-y way that not only is Carnage to appear in the upcoming Venom movie but, yes, he will be played by Woody Harrelson.” There was a long-running rumor that Venom cast member Riz Ahmed might be playing Carnage, but reports indicate Ahmed is actually playing a character named Dr. Carlton Drake.
Harrleson’s involvement in Venom was announced in December 2017. At the time, word had it that Harrelson was playing “a henchman of sorts” – which seems to contrast with this new report that he’s playing Carnage. In the comics, Carnage is a serial killer named Cletus Kasady, who is infected with the same sort of alien symbiote as Venom. The Carnage storyline received the video game treatment in the 1994 game Maximum Carnage, which has a pretty killer theme song.
Venom focuses on Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), the host of an alien symbiote that gives him incredible powers. In the comics, Eddie Brock/Venom was an antagonist to Spider-Man, but Spidey will likely not be appearing in this standalone film. Venom was previously brought to the big screen by Sam Raimi in Spider-Man 3.
Specific details regarding Venom are still under wraps. What we do know know is that the Venom film is inspired by two specific comic storylines: Lethal Protector and Planet of the Symbiotes. In Lethal Protector, Venom turns from regular Spider-Man protagonist into an anti-hero. Venom also teams with Spider-Man to defeat five new offspring of the Venom symbiote. In Planet of the Symbiotes, an army of symbiotes invade earth. Carnage appears in that story, which might carry over into the Venom film. I suppose the question one should ask now is, if Carnage is in Venom, how big a part will he play? Will he be the main antagonist, or is Venom setting Carnage up for a bigger appearance in a future film?
Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Scott Haze, Reid Scott, Jenny Slate and Woody Harrelson hits theaters on October 5, 2018.

Lee, 34, joined the soap in 2017 and made his first appearance on April 18.
The character was involved in various storylines while in Albert Square and was mainly linked with Mick Carter (played by Danny Dyer) and the rest of the Carter family.
Gaining a job as a barman at the Queen Vic, Woody was involved in the sale of the freehold to Weyland & Co.
He made his EastEnders exit shortly after joining on May 19.
However, he returned a month later in June 2017 and announced that he and Whitney (Shona McGarty) were engaged.
Woody was then offered a job in Spain as a barman and decided to accept.
Worrying about breaking the news to his fiancée, Woody and Whitney initially argued before she eventually agreed – believing that he would return.
He later left a note saying that Whitney would be better in Walford and without him, and that he has left without her.
An EastEnders spokesperson confirmed Lee’s exit from the soap.
They said: “We can confirm that Lee will be leaving EastEnders when his storyline concludes this spring.”
Fans of the show took to social media following the announcement.
One viewer tweeted: “I can’t pretend and say I’m gutted to see lee Ryan leave #EastEnders because I’d be lying!
“His Character was boosted to be a BIG character with big storylines! & that just failed! – Good Luck for the future Lee.”
Another posted: “I mean, I thought Lee Ryan left a while ago. #eastenders.”
A third added: “I’m not bothered by lee Ryan leaving eastenders he’s ok but I wouldn’t cry over it!”
“Aw I kinda liked him but prefer Halfway hope he’s on his way back #EastEnders,” wrote a fourth.
EastEnders continues on Monday on BBC One at 8pm.
Filming has wrapped on the film, which stars Timothee Chalamet and Selena Gomez.
In the midst of the #MeToo movement, scrutiny on Allen has intensified once again, as daughter Dylan Farrow stands by her sexual abuse allegations against him (allegations he has always denied).
Now, Page Six reports that Rainy Day will either be canned altogether, or released online with no promotion.
Stars Chalamet and Rebecca Hall have donated their salaries to charities, while Gomez was alleged earlier this month to have also made a donation that exceeded her payment amount.
“Rainy Day will either not come out or [will] get dumped by Amazon without any PR or theatrical release,” a source told the publication.
They added: “He’s having trouble casting his new film.”
Greta Gerwig, Colin Firth and Ellen Page are also among those who have recently spoken out in regret of their working with Allen in the past, although Alec Baldwin and Diane Keaton have stood by him.
Yesterday Kate Winslet – who worked with Allen on Wonder Wheel – was reported to have made a speech that alluded to her regret at working with “certain individuals”.
“I wouldn’t be able to stand here this evening and keep to myself some bitter regrets that I have at poor decisions to work with individuals with whom I wish I had not,” she said.
“It has become clear to me that by not saying anything, I might be adding to the anguish of many courageous women and men.”
She added: “Sexual abuse is a crime. While it rests with the rule of law to pass judgement, it lies with all of us to listen to the smallest of voices and to never stop listening.”

As more actors denounce director Woody Allen, Alec Baldwin is publicly standing with him.
Dylan Farrow, Allen’s adopted daughter, has long accused Allen of sexually abusing her when she was seven years old. And since the #MeToo movement has come to prominence in Hollywood, many actors have either said they would never work with Allen again, or in some cases, donated their salaries from his movies to charity.
But not Alec Baldwin.
Baldwin, who has starred in several of Allen’s films including “To Rome with Love” and “Blue Jasmine,” posted a series of tweets on Sunday in support of Allen. In the tweets, Baldwin compared Dylan to Mayella Ewell, a character in the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” who lies about being raped.

1 of the most effective things Dylan Farrow has in her arsenal is the “persistence of emotion.” Like Mayella in TKAM, her tears/exhortations r meant 2 shame u in2 belief in her story.
But I need more than that before I destroy some1, regardless of their fame.
I need a lot more.

To say that @RealDylanFarrow is telling the truth is to say that @MosesFarrow is lying.

If my defense of Woody Allen offends you, it’s real simple.
Unfollow.
Condemn.
Move on.
Allen has always denied the allegations from Dylan Farrow. Allen and Dylan’s brother Moses — whom Baldwin mentions in one of the tweets — say that Dylan’s mother, Mia Farrow, brainwashed her into telling this story to get revenge on Allen for cheating on her with their other adopted daughter, Soon-Yi. Allen had an affair with Soon-Yi and has been married to her for 20 years.

As the #MeToo movement gained momentum in Hollywood following the Harvey Weinstein sexual assault allegations, Dylan Farrow asked pointedly in a Los Angeles Times op-ed in December, “Why has the #MeToo revolution spared Woody Allen?”
In 1993, Allen faced accusations that he had sexually abused Farrow, his then-seven-year-old adoptive daughter. Allen, who has continually denied the accusations, was investigated but never prosecuted.
But Farrow has long maintained that Allen sexually assaulted her, after she first discussed the issue publicly in a New York Times op-ed in 2014.
In her 2017 op-ed, Farrow asked why A-list actors like Kate Winslet, Blake Lively, and Greta Gerwig have continued to work with and praise Allen.
And in an interview with “CBS This Morning” on Thursday, Farrow described Allen’s alleged sexual assault in disturbing detail, while calling on actors to to “acknowledge their complicity” in perpetuating Hollywood’s “culture of silence.”
Over the last few months, Farrow’s words appear to have shifted to the tide against Allen, as a number of actors who starred in Allen’s movies (including Gerwig, Rebecca Hall, and Colin Firth) have now either disavowed him or donated their salaries from his films to abuse victims charities.
Here are all the actors who have disavowed Woody Allen after working in his movies:

In October, before the LA Times published Farrow’s op-ed, actor Griffin Newman said on Twitter that he regretted his “one-scene role” in Woody Allen’s upcoming film, “A Rainy Day in New York,” and would donate his salary from the film to RAINN (the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network).
“I need to get this off my chest: I worked on Woody Allen’s next movie. I believe he is guilty. I donated my entire salary to RAINN,” Newman tweeted.
Newman said he “spent a month debating whether or not to quit” the movie, but decided to speak out following the “compounded” list of sexual misconduct allegations in the wake of Harvey Weinstein.

Rebecca Hall, who starred in Allen’s 2008 film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona,” said in an Instagram post on Saturday that she regretted her brief role in Allen’s “A Rainy Day in New York,” and would donate her salary from the part to Time’s Up, a movement in solidarity with victims of sexual misconduct.
“After reading and re-reading Dylan Farrow’s statements of a few days ago and going back and reading the older ones — I see, not only how complicated this matter is, but that my actions have made another woman feel silenced and dismissed,” Hall wrote in the post.
“I regret this decision and wouldn’t make the same one today. It’s a small gesture and not one intended as close to compensation but I’ve donated my wage to @timesup,” she continued.

Timothée Chalamet, the breakout star of “Call Me by Your Name,” said in an Instagram post on Monday that he would donate his salary from “A Rainy Day In New York” to Time’s Up, The LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN.
“I have been asked in a few recent interviews about my decision to work on a film with Woody Allen last summer. I am not able to answer the question directly because of contractual obligations,” Chalamet wrote. “But what I can say is this: I don’t want to profit from my work on the film, and to that end, I am going to donate my entire salary to three charities: TIME’S UP, The LGBT Center in New York, and RAINN.”
“I want to be worthy of standing shoulder to shoulder with the brave artists who are fighting for all people to be treated with the respect and dignity they deserve,” he continued.

(Thanks to Variety for embedding those tweets; we’re unable to view them, as Mr. Baldwin has blocked both our site’s and this writer’s Twitter account for writing critically of him in the past, because he is a grown-up adult.)
Baldwin’s tweets came not long after Call Me By Your Name star Timothée Chalamet wrote an Instragram post in which he (basically) apologized for appearing in an Allen film last summer, and vowed to donate his salary to Time’s Up, RAINN, and the LGBT Community Center in New York. Chalamet’s post follows similar statements of regret from several previous Allen collaborators, including Greta Gerwig, Rebecca Hall, Mira Sorvino, David Krumholtz, Griffin Newman, and Ellen Page.
We’ll not wade into the substance of Mr. Baldwin’s arguments – the seemingly obvious points about how unreliable the notions of investigation and innocence are when it comes to matters of sexual assault, or the complexities of the Allen case in general (Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson offers up a thorough and even-handed overview here). Let’s merely pause to note how reliable a defender Mr. Baldwin is of men accused of such assaults. Yes, indeed. Keeps working with them, keeps stepping up for them. Interesting.
