Every 22 minutes, a woman in Canada dies of a heart attack. But the majority don’t have to, experts say, warning that more women will die unnecessarily if the medical community doesn’t tailor care to their needs.
]]>
Gina Prince-Bythewood made her name making tremendous dramas that I feel never got the proper respect that they deserved. Partly, this is due to the fact that she makes movies about women, which generally don’t get as much respect as they should. Partly, it’s because her best work were romances, such as “Love & Basketball” and “Beyond the Lights,” a genre that has rarely gotten its proper due since the turn of the 21st century. These romances were also connected to the worlds of women’s basketball and pop music, respectively, which many see as trivial.
This was not the lane Prince-Bythewood always saw herself in, though. At the heart of these films is classic Hollywood entertainment, and she looked to bring that to the action genre as well. She had signed up to make “Silver & Black” for Marvel and Sony, which would have been a film about Silver Sable and Black Cat from the Spider-Man universe, but that project fell apart. From that, she hopped over to another comic book property in “The Old Guard,” which starred Charlize Theron and was released on Netflix in 2020. While I don’t think “The Old Guard” is great cinema, it provided a much-needed respite from the horrors of the height of the pandemic.
For someone directing large-scale action for the first time, Gina Prince-Bythewood handled things admirably. The set pieces weren’t necessarily the most inventive. However, they were very well-shot, and Prince-Bythewood had an inherent knack for action geography. It was a great place to build from, and boy howdy, did she build on it for “The Woman King,” her 19th century African epic. Filmmaking is evolution, and Gina Prince-Bythewood knows how to use each film as something from which to learn.

Some filmmakers hate rehearsal. They hope the spontaneity on the day of the shoot will be their saving grace. There’s a place for spontaneity if you’re John Cassavetes making “Husbands,” but on a big action movie, you can’t leave things to chance; action sequences are incredibly complicated and could cause serious harm. Rehearsal and preparation are vital elements to these films, and sadly, not all of them are allotted the time and budget to properly utilize them.
But Gina Prince-Bythewood understood the importance of getting everyone on the same page for “The Woman King.” Speaking with A.frame, she detailed how working on “The Old Guard” made her realize rehearsal was her friend:
“I learned in terms of what you need to do to prepare for stunts, how much you need to prepare the actors, how to work with your stunt and fight coordinator … It also gave me the knowledge of knowing what it takes to do really good action — how many takes it can be, that it has to be perfect on set or it will not be in your edit room. Even if you’re on take 22 and it’s not quite right, you can’t stop. You’re exhausted. The actors are exhausted. But you learn that, if it’s not on set, it’s not in the edit room, and you don’t have the scene.”
This prep resulted in every action sequence being rousing, brutal, and utterly thrilling. Every actor is in total command of their body, and you believe these are real warriors. Without proper rehearsal, “The Woman King” could look frenzied and hollow, and it couldn’t be further from those descriptors. Gina Prince-Bythewood learned how to be a great action filmmaker, and I want to see her canvases get even bigger.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton shared her memories with Queen Elizabeth II as funeral processions have begun for the late monarch.
On CNN's "State of the Union" with Dana Bash on Sunday, Clinton said she and Queen Elizabeth II would sometimes share "wry" comments about being women leaders on an international stage.
"I can't say that I talked at any length. Sometimes, there would be a wry exchange about how, as a woman leader, you always had to have your hair done," Clinton said on Sunday. "Of course, she always looked perfect, unlike some of us. She had a sense of style that really stayed with her."

Clinton described the late Queen as a "symbol of a strong, stalwart woman leader."
"I knew that her sense of who she was and the role she played literally governed her life, from every second of it," Clinton said, adding that she heard an interesting statistic that nine out of 10 people alive in the world today were born after she became Queen Elizabeth took the throne.

Clinton praised the Queen for her "devotion to duty and her sense of obligation" to her people.
"But I also saw a more playful and somewhat funny and very, incredibly warm side of her as well," Clinton said. "All of the presidents, all of the prime ministers, everyone that she met, I think, saw that twinkle in her eye, and maybe were lucky enough to exchange pleasantries that went beyond just the official greetings."
Clinton added: "And that's how I felt. I felt very fortunate to see her in different settings over the time that I knew her as first lady and then secretary of state."

There’s something very old school about “The Woman King.” It’s a sweeping, rousing, crowd-pleasing historical action-adventure epic the likes of which Hollywood doesn’t make that much anymore, at least not well. It’s familiar in a welcoming way. And yet, at the same time, this is also something groundbreaking. Because unlike the Hollywood epics of old, “The Woman King” features a cast made up almost entirely of Black women, and there’s a Black woman, Gina Prince-Bythewood, behind the camera, too. Maybe one day we’ll get to a point where such a movie doesn’t feel groundbreaking, but here we are.
Even if it wasn’t groundbreaking, “The Woman King” would still be an absolute blast. It’s a film that isn’t afraid to get you cheering, although much of the subject matter is often overwhelmingly harsh. The key to all of this is that Prince-Bythewood and screenwriter Dana Stevens have assembled a wonderful cast of memorable, easy-to-root-for characters. Viola Davis leads them all, and as is a common fact by now, Davis is stellar. But she’s backed up by a spirited, funny, butt-kicking group of warriors. Davis plays Nanisca, a General in the West African Kingdom of Dahomey. It’s 1832, and Nanisca leads the Agojie, the all-female group of warriors loyal to new-ish King Ghezo (John Boyega). We’re introduced to Nanisca and her warriors in a pulse-pounding opening sequence that showcases Prince-Bythewood’s skill at crafting engaging, thrilling action.
But then “The Woman King” settles down. The trailers would have you believe this is a straight-up action movie, and indeed, there is much incredible action to be had; the type of action that puts the endless stream of Marvel and other franchise action movies to shame. But “The Woman King” is also a character study, and Davis’ Nanisca, while always a commanding presence, isn’t really the main character.

Within the walls of the palace at Dahomey, the women of the Agojie live fierce and free. The other people of the kingdom think of them as almost mythical; beings that are unearthly and not to be looked at. But as Nanisca says, there’s an evil growing outside the palace walls. The slave trade — something even King Ghezo takes part in — is a blight in Nanisca’s eyes, even though it has helped make Dahomey very wealthy. Then there are the gun-toting fighters of the Oyo Empire, led by a cruel, slave-trading general, played with real menace by Jimmy Odukoya. Nanisca warns of both the threat of the Oyo Empire and the evils of the slave trade, but her King is hesitant to change old, familiar ways.
In the midst of all this enters Nawi (Thuso Mbedu), a 19-year-old handed over to the Agojie after she refuses to marry a man who freely hits her. Nawi is stubborn and brave, and she becomes our real lead character, guiding us through the world of the Agojie. To become one of them, Nawi — along with several other recruits — must endure a rigorous boot camp-style training program, and this takes up the majority of “The Woman King.” We watch as Nawi grows into a real warrior, while still ensuring Nanisca’s displeasure with her strong-headed ways.
Nawi is taken under the wing of Agojie soldier Izogie who guides her through every step and dolls out droll advice. Izogie is played by Lashana Lynch, and in a cast full of heavy-hitters, Lynch is the real stand-out, turning Izogie into a funny, warm, but still deadly presence who loves to swill whiskey and sharpen her nails into claws. Every second she’s on screen is a treat, and I wanted more of her. The comradery that forms between Nawi and Izogie is wonderful, and Mbdeu gives a breakout performance in the process, making us care deeply for Nawi and her story.

“The Woman King” is inspired by a true story, and while I’m sure there will be some who loudly proclaim that the movie isn’t 100% historically accurate, I’m not concerned with that. No film is even 100% accurate, not even historical epics. Hell, “Braveheart” is loaded with pure fiction, and that won a slew of Oscars. Whether or not everything that happens in “The Woman King” happened in real life is inconsequential. What matters is it feels real to the world the film builds. We believe in the validity of these characters. Davis, one of the best actors of this or any generation, is in top form, making Nanisca into a complex, tenable figure. And everyone backing her up feels the same.
The human drama is what drives “The Woman King,” but to be fair, the script never goes quite as deep as it could. No matter — “The Woman King” is so consistently powerful and emotionally exhilarating that we’re swept away by it all, rooting for the brave heroes and cursing the nasty villains. And gosh does that action sing. A few quirky cuts get in the way here and there (I’m guessing these are the result of some violence trimming to earn a PG-13 rating), but for the majority of the picture we can easily see the actors doing their own stunts, fighting and kicking and swinging and smashing and stabbing and at times running sideways up something in order to deliver a flying punch.
There are more than a few moments in “The Woman King” that will have you fist-pumping and grinning like a goofball, amazed at energy of it all. And all that action is often aided by raw, real emotion which is handled deftly. Davis in particular seems to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders just with a single glance. We can feel that weight right along with her — and we can’t wait to watch her shrug it off so she can kick some ass.

“The Woman King” is already shaping up to be a pivotal moment in Hollywood’s long and problematic history. With an almost entirely Black cast, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s story of the Agojie regiment of Dahomey is unlike any other blockbuster in recent memory. This sentiment goes for its crew, as we at /Film recently learned at the #TakeUpSpace discussion held by Twitter to promote “The Woman King,” which premieres tonight at the Toronto International Film Festival.
Viola Davis, who stars in the film as the fierce but headstrong Agojie leader Nanisca, doesn’t just provide her acting talents to the role. She also produced it underneath her JuVee Productions banner, which she operates alongside her husband. During the TIFF discussion, she described the various challenges that Black female producers such as herself face as they attempt to bring their stories to life.
“If you were a fly on the wall, and you could see every time you’re walking in that room and hustling for your word, you’re fighting for simple stories. You’re fighting for the hair, the makeup, you know what we look like, you know, can you make them prettier? Can we have more lipstick and not dirt? [We’re] fighting for all these actors who are great, but they don’t have the resumes of their white counterparts, so you’ve got to sell them in the room.”

While “The Woman King” had its own lengthy road to getting made, the fight for both on-and-off screen voices was won when filming finally began. Black talent was hired in several critical production roles, which star Lashawna Lynch said made the filming process feel so much easier.
“I feel like we can all arrive and feel comfortable and at home and relaxed knowing that we as Black women and Black people are already taken care of and supported and that’s with all departments as well as having a Black head of hair, Black makeup, Black costume designer,” she said. “These are important things.”
As far as on-screen roles go, the vast majority of the cast represented the vastness of the African diaspora, according to John Boyega. He takes on the role of King Ghezo, the real-life ruler of Dahomey in the 19th century. He commented:
“I want people to actually experience the collaboration between Black actors and people, African American and Black British, South Africans, everyone’s coming down to South Africa to make this special. Within our Blackness, we do have cultural differences. This project for me, especially somebody coming in, to see and to train each other, to be there to support each other is something that I feel like we’re going to continue based on just this project alone.”
You can watch the rest of the #TakeUpSpace conversation on Twitter. “The Woman King” will have its world premiere on September 9 before arriving in theaters on September 16.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in a new interview spoke candidly about her political future, expressing doubts that she or another woman of color could become president because of the "misogyny" and "patriarchy" she says she's endured first-hand as a congresswoman.
"I admit to sometimes believing that I live in a country that would never let that happen," she told GQ in an interview published Wednesday.
The congresswoman said her experience in Congress "has given me a front-row seat to how deeply and unconsciously, as well as consciously, so many people in this country hate women."
"They hate women of color," the New York lawmaker continued. "People ask me questions about the future. And realistically, I can't even tell you if I'm going to be alive in September. And that weighs very heavily on me."
Since Ocasio-Cortez shocked the country by winning her primary in 2018 and seized the national spotlight, she's experienced hostility from her fellow colleagues on both sides of the aisle. In July 2020, then-Republican Rep. Ted Yoho of Florida reportedly called her a "fucking bitch." Last November, Republican Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona tweeted out an edited anime video showing him killing Ocasio-Cortez. And in July, a conservative comedian sexually harassed Ocasio-Cortez using racist language outside the Capitol building.
Ocasio-Cortez has also become a target of right-wing media and conservative circles, and has faced a barrage of death threats. She's said she feared being raped and killed as rioters stormed the the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
"It's not just the right wing. Misogyny transcends political ideology: left, right, center. This grip of patriarchy affects all of us, not just women; men," she told GQ.
Ocasio-Cortez has repeatedly dismissed questions about a future presidential run. She told GQ that she battles an "inner conflict" between the presidency being unattainable for someone like her and her belief that "anything is possible."
"Sometimes little girls will say, 'Oh, I want you to be president,' or things like that," she told GQ. "It's very difficult for me to talk about because it provokes a lot of inner conflict in that I never want to tell a little girl what she can't do. And I don't want to tell young people what is not possible. I've never been in the business of doing that."
