Champagne flowed, beer was guzzled and a trophy was hoisted Saturday as the first-year Toronto Wolfpack moved up the English rugby league ladder.

Rugby’s first transatlantic team defeated a tough Barrow Raiders side 26-2 to secure promotion to the second-tier Championship with one game remaining in the season.

Eighteen unanswered second-half points secured the victory that assures Toronto (19-1-1) of the Kingstone Press League 1 title and the automatic promotion berth that comes with it.

Coach Paul Rowley praised the hard work and sacrifice of his players, saying they toil “for rewards that are nowhere near what other sportsmen get.”

“We came together as a bunch of individuals, we became a family of players and staff,” he added. “And then we got some new additions to the family — that’s the people of Toronto who are here today.”

Barrow (17-3-1) made the Wolfpack work for everything for the first 50 minutes before a season-high attendance of 7,972 at a sunny Lamport Stadium. But Toronto pulled ahead with converted tries in the 53rd, 55th and 59th minutes as holes opened in the tiring visitors’ defence.

“We’re champions, we’re proud of it and this is the start of something special,” said hooker Bob Beswick after downing what looked to be the first of many cans of beer.

Added Rowley: “This is a success already and the rugby league world needs to take notice. This is the future, this is the future of sport not just rugby league. The world is a smaller place.”

Toronto now has its sights on the elite Super League. But it will have to get through the Championship first.

The Wolfpack, a fully professional side albeit one with a small squad, had its way with semi-pro opposition in the third tier. Playing in the Championship means tougher, full-time foes.

Beswick is convinced the sky’s the limit.

“I’m not sure what the owners are thinking, I’m not sure what the fans are thinking but we’ve had what nearly 8,000 here today for a sport nobody’s heard of in Canada. So I think we’re going to touch on something special.

“Next year we’ll probably get close to 10,000. Super League, which is our premier division, isn’t getting that consistently.”

Only the beginning

For CEO Eric Perez, this title is just the start. He is working on placing another franchise in Canada while scheming to keep the Wolfpack moving up.

“Stage 1 is complete. It’s a three-stage game. Stage 3 will be Super League. So when we get there, then we’ll really see what the potential of this team is,” he said.

A showdown between No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the third-tier league, it was a hard-hitting contest with more than one player left wobbly by a huge hit, some of which were illegal. Toronto can thank its defence for resisting numerous early Barrow attacks after an error-strewn start.

Blake Wallace scored two tries for Toronto while Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e and Richard Whiting added singles. Captain Craig Hall had four conversions and a penalty.

Lewis Charnock kicked a penalty for Barrow, which was beaten 70-2 on its May visit to Canada.

Wolfpack take over

Helped by Toronto penalties and handing errors, Barrow had more of the ball early but was unable to turn it into points. The Wolfpack went ahead in the 14th minute after a fine break by Hall set up the opening try by Laulu-Togaga’e and led 8-0 at halftime after a Hall penalty.

Barrow laid siege to the Toronto goal-line to open the second half but didn’t get on the board until Charnock’s 49th-minute penalty cut the lead to 8-2.

The Wolfpack then took over. A swerving run by Wallace in the 53rd minute increased the Toronto lead and Whiting barrelled over two minutes later. Wallace crossed again in the 59th.

Promotion comes 21 league games and 500 days after the franchise was announced to a mostly incredulous local audience in April 2016. And with one game remaining, against visiting Doncaster next Saturday.

Toronto came into the game with a two-point lead over Barrow, needing just a win or tie to achieve its promotion goal. Barrow still has a shot at going up given the second- through fifth-place teams will face off to see who joins Toronto in the Championship.

Toronto improved to 10-0-0 at Lamport Stadium, having outscored its opposition 544-102.

Captain Craig Hall scored four tries and 38 points Saturday as the unbeaten Toronto Wolfpack ran roughshod over their latest transatlantic visitor, pounding the Hemel Stags 74-16.

It was first versus worst in the standings with the fully professional Wolfpack beating up another team of part-timers in the Kingstone Press League 1, the third tier of English rugby league where Toronto (15-0-0) has had to start life.

Hemel (1-14-0) was outgunned but made the most of Toronto errors before a Wolfpack-record crowd of 7,247 at Lamport Stadium. The Wolfpack padded their lead with six unanswered second-half tries.

Toronto has the week off before starting the Super 8s round of playoffs, which features the top eight sides in the league. The teams, who carry their points forward, play each other with the eventual leader earning promotion to the second-tier Championship.

The second- and third-place teams then meet to decide the second promoted team.

The Wolfpack will play their first three games of the round in England before hosting the final four. Their next home game is Aug. 19.

Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e scored three second-half tries as the Toronto Wolfpack remained undefeated in their inaugural rugby league season with a 56-12 home win over Hunslet RLFC on Saturday.

The Wolfpack improved to 12-0-0 — good for top spot in the Kingstone Press League 1 standings — after pulling away in the second half in front of a home crowd of 6,042 at Toronto’s Lamport Stadium.

Toronto led 22-10 at halftime before scoring 34 straight points after the break. Liam Kay, Richard Whiting and Craig Hall added a try apiece to go along with the three from Laulu-Togaga’e in the second half.

Jonny Pownwall had two tries in the first half while Sean Penkywicz, Ryan Brierley and James Laithwaite also touched down.

Laithwaite was playing his first match after fracturing a bone in his neck in the April 23 Ladbrokes Challenge Cup loss to Salford. Kay also returned to Toronto’s lineup after missing time with an ankle injury.

Toronto has outscored its opponents 716-109 in 12 games this season. The Wolfpack are the highest-scoring team in the league by a landslide, with the Barrow Raiders next with 454 points — 262 less than Toronto.

Hunslet is currently in ninth place in the 16-team league with a 5-7 record.

The Toronto Wolfpack got off to a slow start Saturday but rebounded to overwhelm yet another rugby league opponent, defeating the Coventry Bears 54-12.

Toronto (9-0-0) has entered the third tier of English rugby league with an eye to winning promotion all the way to the elite Super League.

A fully professional side, the first-year Wolfpack have had their way with their semi-pro opposition. Toronto has a 536-85 overall scoring edge this season.

The Wolfpack, rugby’s first transatlantic team, are 3-0-0 at home where they have battered the visitors 186-26. Announced attendance at Lamport Stadium on a sunny 21-degree Celsius afternoon was 7,236, following crowds of 6,281 and 7,144 for the first two home games.

Coventry (1-8-0) came into the game ranked 14th in the 16-team Kingstone Press League 1, giving up 40.5 points a game.

Coventry starts strong in Toronto

But the visitors proved a tough out in the early going, with the score 8-4 for Toronto after 30 minutes. Three tries in the last nine minutes of the half gave the Wolfpack a 26-6 lead at the break.

The home side was frustrated by penalties and handling errors. But as Coventry tired, Toronto kept the scoreboard ticking.

Despite the score, Coventry kept attacking but could not convert in what was billed as the “battle of the beasts.”

Liam Kay scored three tries for Toronto while Andrew Dixon and Fuifui Moimoi had two and Bob Beswick, Ryan Brierley and Rhys Jacks added singles. Craig Hall kicked eight conversions.

Jamahl Hunte and Brad Delaney scored tries for Coventry. Delaney added a penalty and a conversion.

Plenty of Wolfpack debutants

Coming off a 68-point win over the previously unbeaten Barrow Raiders, the No. 2 team in the division, Wolfpack coach Paul Rowley dug into his roster for Coventry.

He used all four of his North American internationals: Americans Ryan Burroughs and Joe Eichner and Australian-born Jacks and Tom Dempsey who play for Canada thanks to their bloodlines.

Eichner, who earned a contract as a trialist, and Dempsey made their Wolfpack debuts coming off the interchange bench.

Quentin Laulu-Togaga’e, Dan Fleming and Steve Crossley sat out to make way for the North Americans. James Laithwaite, Blake Wallace, Gary Wheeler and Jack Bussey were injured while Jake Emmitt was suspended.

An eye to the future

Coventry, admitted into the third tier in 2015, came into the game having been outscored 324-140 this season.

The Bears have lost four straight in the league and conceded 40-plus points five times. They were knocked out of two cup competitions at the first hurdle.

Coventry coach Tom Tsang, 32, is working with a squad whose average age is 22. He looked at Saturday’s game with an eye to the future.

“This league is the highest most of our players have played,” Tsang said prior to the match. “You look at the other side — NRL [Australia’s National Rugby League] experience, Super League experience, international experience.

“So for our guys who want to improve themselves and progress their careers, this is a really big opportunity to learn from what’s a very very good team. And hopefully that can then help them in their future careers — just the experience and soaking up the atmosphere of the day and all that comes with it.”

The Wolfpack are giving all proceeds from Saturday’s program sales to the Manchester bombing relief campaign. Many of their players come from the Manchester area and two had family members at the Ariana Grande concert that was the subject of the attack. They escaped injury.
