Former heavyweight champion Klitschko has decided to call time on his 21-year career, ending with a professional record of 64 wins and five defeats. The 41-year-old’s last fight was against Anthony Joshua in April, with the British fighter knocking him out in the 11th round at a sold-out Wembley. Klitschko had a rematch clause in the contract for the fight, but the 1996 Olympic super-heavyweight champion has opted not to trigger it and will instead bow out as one of the greats of the sport. Scroll through the gallery above to see some of the best pictures from Wladimir Klitschko’s career as he announces his retirement from boxing. On April 29, Joshua beat Klitschko in a dramatic 11th-round stoppage where the Brit had to get off the canvas for the very first time in his professional career. Less than three weeks later, Joshua has posted a video of himself back in the gym but would not give away who his next opponent might be. “Getting ready to fight whoever,” Joshua said. The 27-year-old has applied for an exception to his IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev so that he can fight Klitschko in a contracted rematch without losing the belt. And promoter Eddie Hearn seems optimistic that the Ukrainian heavyweight will decide to take on Joshua again. “I believe Klitschko will go ahead with the rematch so we are looking at dates,” said Hearn. “The Principality Stadium is not really available in November because of rugby so 28 October is the option. “Most of December is available but I don’t really want to go that late. “Josh has a bit of a sore shoulder, Klitschko has had a tough fight, his face was bashed up. “You have got two more weeks in May, all of June and after that they will be thinking ‘right let’s get back in camp’. “Even if you started back in camp in August, then you have September and October so end of October can work. “For Cardiff that date is an option and also December but I don’t really want to go into December so we are looking at the MGM in Las Vegas, China and Dubai as options too.” Klitschko became the first man ever to knock Joshua down in a professional fight with a stunning sixth-round salvo. But the Brit got up off the canvas to record a knockout in the 11th round and seize two more world championship belts to add to his IBF heavyweight title. Klitschko, 41, had been expected to retire after the defeat but instead he suggested in his parting Tweet from London that he would fight again. “Leaving [London] with a feeling everyone won on Saturday night: the sport, the fans and even I on respect,” Klitschko said. “Cheers and I’ll be back!” It reinforces the claim the Ukrainian made in the ring immediately after his defeat that a rematch clause exists between himself and Joshua. “Of course, we have it in the contract, I’m right now interested,” Klitschko told Sky Sports. “Analyse what the heck has happened. “I did enjoy the night as well as you. “I wish I would [have] raised my hand instead of being someone that didn’t make it and win the titles back. “But congratulations to Anthony, he got up, he fought back, and he won the titles. “Both fighters were really giving their best. “The best man won tonight and it’s an amazing event for boxing. “Two gentlemen fought each other. “I say gentlemen, because boxing came from England. “Anthony was better today than I. “It’s really sad that I didn’t make it tonight. “I was planning to do it – it didn’t work – but all the respect to Anthony, congratulations.” If Joshua does not fight Klitschko, Hungarian heavyweight Kubrat Pulev is favourite to challenge for the titles next. The 35-year-old has lost just once in his 26 fights with his one defeat coming against Klitschko back in 2014. The British fighter picked himself up off the canvas to stop Klitschko in the 11th round of a heavyweight classic at Wembley Stadium on Saturday night. Klitschko has a rematch clause he can trigger but remains unsure of what to do after his fifth career defeat. But the IBF and WBA heavyweight champion is ready to face him anywhere. “I think he will want to have a rematch because a fighter is the last one who knows when it is time to stop,” said Joshua, who remains unbeaten after 19 professional fights. “But I think the team around him – ie his fiancee, and they normally wear the trousers, and his brother – they will advise him differently. “I have the ultimate respect for him inside and outside of the ring. I wouldn’t mind fighting him again if he wants the rematch. “It’s up to him. I don’t mind as long as my trainer Rob McCracken thinks it’s good to go, I’ll go.” Promoter Eddie Hearn added: “That was probably one of Klitschko’s best performances of late. “He will probably say he wants the rematch as any champion would. Whether he feels the same in a month’s time after reflection…we have no rush at all. “We’re certainly not going to be opening negotiations with any other fighter until we know what Wladimir Klitschko is going to do. “He came here, so we may go to Germany. I always said if no one wants to see a rematch, it’s unlikely to happen. If people want to see a rematch, it’s likely to happen.” Joshua is now ready “to do what Klitschko did” and dominate the heavyweight division. The Ukrainian’s 11-year reign was ended by Tyson Fury in November 2015. But he refused to reveal his future plans after back-to-back defeats and the fact he believes Joshua is “vulnerable” may tempt him to have the rematch. He added: “I just mentioned that I will not make statements right now. I can execute it at certain times. I will let you know. Be patient. “He beat me and won the fight to show his qualities. How he will develop we will see. “He is vulnerable, that is maybe something he will need to work on. He is today a success. He is unified champion today. You have to respect it.”

Anthony Joshua celebrates after winning an epic heavyweight title bout against Wladimir Klitschko
This was one of the most hyped clashes in recent memory but it delivered – and then some.
Joshua looked like he had won it, then he looked like he had lost it, but somehow he battled back to stop Klitschko in the 11th round of a thriller in front of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium.
The defending IBF champion added the WBA belt to his glittering CV but this was about more than belts.
This was proving who the king of the heavyweight division is and it was the young lion that prevailed.
Not without the almightiest of scares though. Joshua floored Klitschko in the fifth and looked like he was one punch away from an early victory.
But he hit the canvas in the following round and looked out on his feet when he beat the referee’s count.
It took him two full rounds to recover before he found his rhythm again and then he ended it in the 11th.
Klitschko, who had been down twice already in the round, was being peppered with huge shots in the corner before referee David Fields called it off.
Joshua spoke before the fight about how he used to travel to Wembley to scour the markets for fake clothes to impress his mates.
That was before he found boxing and the riches it would bring to him.
But this was the night he was set to show he is a genuine heavyweight star.
This was the big one and, while he showed plenty of flaws, he delivered when called upon with a brutal and brave display.
Joshua reached the pinnacle of the amateur game by winning the London 2012 Olympics at super-heavyweight and now he is top of the sport as a professional.
Joshua won the world title shot when he flattened the hopeless Charles Martin in his 16th fight to claim the IBF belt just over a year ago.
Dominic Breazeale and Eric Molina would fall in his two defences, but this was a huge step up from those two.
At 41, the Ukrainian may be a fading force and doubts about him were raised after Tyson Fury outfoxed him 16 months ago in Dusseldorf to end his 11-year reign as heavyweight king.

Anthony Joshua celebrates after knocking down Wladimir Klitschko during their heavyweight bout
But he insisted he was refreshed and obsessed about becoming a three-time heavyweight world champion. He certainly was.
A British post-war record attendance of 90,000 packed themselves into Wembley Stadium, the home of football in this country.
For this night it was the boxing mecca though as eyes from 140 different countries looked on as for once the old saying of “and the millions watching around the world” was not just hyperbole.
The British boxing fans backing their man, added to the hunger for some to witness a significant heavyweight world title fight, made for a fever pitch atmosphere inside the ground.
Both men knew they were taking home £15m each no matter what, but only one could take the IBF and WBA belts home as well as the title of the best heavyweight on the planet.
Fury will argue that is still him, but until he returns to action then the winner of this will hold on to the crown.
The former heavyweight champion must have been watching somewhere with envy as he knows his talent deserves to be on a stage like this but his personal problems have led him astray.
When Joshua was rocking he must have been feeling pretty smug.
The entrances were spectacular, as expected because this was an event so big that they had musical introductions to the press conference on Thursday, and the fans here loved it.
The rain also stayed away and the bit of chill in the April evening air kept those at ringside cool as the heat got turned up in the ring.
This fight had to deliver after such a huge build-up.
It was simmering before a punch was thrown, the pleasantries from the build-up were done with. Now it was time to fight and there could be no room for politeness.
Klitschko went on the front foot at the first bell, but he was pawing out his jab tentatively.
Joshua seemed flustered at first but soon settled and started to counter with left hooks and right hands.
Most of them fell short though as the Ukrainian stayed sharp, but two sneaked in towards the end of the round to nick the opener.
Klitschko, like he did against Fury for 12 rounds, was wary of letting the right hand go early on, but that would later change.

Wladimir Klitschko knocks down Anthony Joshua during their heavyweight bout
It gave Joshua confidence to lean in with his right but success for him was still occasional in two tight rounds.
Joshua started to put Klitschko on the back foot in the third and let some combinations go which were failing to land clean.
He did get through to the body though and Klitschko looked to counter with a left hook that missed.
Joshua had never been past seven rounds before and came into this at a career heaviest of 17st 12lb so was Klitschko’s plan was to take this into the later rounds.
The Ukrainian looked to catch the champion cold at the start of the fourth as he came out with a big right.
Joshua then set Klitschko up with a left hook before sinking in a right which was the first real big shot of the bout.
The former champion stood up to it though and continued to press forward.
The fifth exploded into action as a straight from Joshua rocked Klitschko.
The Watford-born man went in for the finish and started pummelling the former champion.
A left hook sent Klitschko on his way down and a right put him over as Joshua raised his arms and roared thinking it was job done.

But the veteran beat the count and even though he was battered and bloodied by a cut over his left eye he somehow recovered.
Then suddenly Joshua seemed to blow up and Klitschko started landing cleanly with the Brit basher now being the one bashed up.
Joshua was the one that hit the deck in the sixth as a straight right sunk him to the canvas.
Somehow he beat the count but he was clearly exhausted.
The crowd tried to lift their man as they sung his name but he needed the bell in what had become a thriller.
The spectacle continued in the seventh as Klitschko popped the jab out and Joshua beckoned him on.
Joshua wasn’t doing enough though as he was still recovering from the blistering fifth and sixth rounds.
Klitschko, even at 41, was showing little sign of flagging after displaying serious powers of recovery.
It was finely poised though as Joshua went into an eighth round for the first time in his career.
Klitschko set him up perfectly with a pawing jab before a swift right as a swelling started to grow over Joshua’s eye.
A good combination got Klitschko going back for the first time in a while in the ninth as this continued to thrill.
Joshua seemed to have his composure back as he snapped the Ukrainian’s head back with a right.
The tenth was an ugly affair with Joshua jabbing but Klitschko finished it with a short right hand that may have swung it in his favour.
Not many had predicted this would go this far but the 90,000 in here with loving every second of the stunning spectacle.
The ending would be as thrilling as the previous action.
Joshua hurt Klitschko with a huge right hand and the Ukrainian soon fell, but somehow he recovered to beat the count.
Again the Ukrainian was down, again he got up after another big right that was followed up by a left hook.
But it was soon over as Joshua pounced and, unlike in the fifth, he did not tire as he lashed in huge blows that brought about the end with 35 seconds left in the 11th.
What a finish and what a fight.
Sometimes boxing does not back up the hype, but this clash definitely did.
Boxing Tonight includes the highly anticipated Anthony Joshua vs Wladimir Klitschko heavyweight bout, which is set to kick off in an hours time at Wembley Stadium.
The high stakes fight could see Klitschko win back the IBF and WBA world heavyweight titles that he lost in 2015 when he was outpointed by Tyson Fury.

However, Joshua stands in his way, already IBF champion and Olympic gold medallist and aiming to maintain his unbeaten record and rack up his 19th win. The current odds stack up with Joshua at 4/9 to defeat Klitschko, with the experienced Ukrainian at odds of 2/1.
Speaking about the high stakes bout, Joshua revealed that Klitschko’s pedigree would not be causing him jitters on the night.
“I will always stand up to the competition,” said Joshua. “There is no fear at all which trembles through the body.”
“You can talk about experience but even when I faced guys with less experience I took them as world championship fights. I have prepared since day one for this. April 29 is just another stepping stone towards greatness.”
The fight is predicted to reach 1.5m sales on Sky Sports Boxing pay-per-view, putting it on course to eclipse the previous record of 1.15m for Mayweather’s clash with Manny Pacquiao in 2015.
According to the latest reports, that would bring in almost £30m before tax, which alone would smash the total for Britain’s richest fight, Carl Froch’s rematch with George Groves at Wembley, which brought in about £22m.

CORDINA v SERGEJ VIB
Right, first on the card is a Joe Cordina v Sergej Vib and it’s underway with about 1,000 people inside the stadium,
Cordina won his first professional fight last Saturday with a fourth-round stoppage win over Jose Aguilar and is action again tonight.
Oh… it’s finished.
That lasted about 60 seconds with Cordina dropping his opponent with a lovely left hook midway through the first.
Vib didn’t really want to know and threw his hands up to stop the fight.

Tonight he returns to Wembley Stadium to earn £15million and try to take home a genuine gold-laden belt from the IBF and WBA, as he faces former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko in front of 90,000 people.
Joshua’s time of scuffling around these parts for fake goods is long gone as he looks to prove he is the real deal on the heavyweight scene tonight.
“What does Wembley mean?” he says. “Hustling, the market, trying to get fake clothes, man. This is where the market is. This is where we used to come to get our CDs. It was on Sundays.
“We drove. Ben [Joshua’s cousin, Ben Ileyemi] used to work in JD Sports, I used to come and see him. What was the best things I ever bought? The belts.
“I like the jeans, the Evisu. It was like a statement pair of jeans, everyone knew they were Evisu jeans. And Air Force Ones [trainers], they were about £20.”
It was the same cousin who took him from those markets to Finchley and District Boxing Club, where his life would change forever.
Back then Joshua was heading for trouble and admits he was “f***ed before boxing”. There were numerous incidents in his early teens and then he was on remand in Reading for what is believed to have been street fighting.
When he started boxing in 2008 he was still on a police tag but soon he would keep his fighting within the confines of the ring and suddenly his life changed.
By 2012, after a small setback when he was arrested for drugs possession, Joshua was Olympic champion and 16 fights in the professional ranks by 2016 saw him claim the IBF title he defends tonight.
This is just his 19th outing in the pro game but he is already a multi-millionaire and victory tonight will see him become Britain’s biggest sports star, according to promoter Eddie Hearn.
Yet he still lives with his mum in a Golders Green flat and keeps his friends from his teenage years by his side.
He fears victory will make him so big that his weekend trips to the launderette may see crowds of people queuing outside to meet him as he deals with his washing.
But where Joshua really finds normality in the new crazy world he lives in is not at home with mum or at the home of GB Boxing in Sheffield where he trains, it is when he is with his 18-month-old son Joseph and niece, Angel.
“It’s a time when I’m so disconnected with what’s happening in the world because you’re in the park and you become a kid,” said Joshua, who will have both of their names on his boxing boots tonight. “It’s like going holiday, you take yourself away from the situation.
“When I’m with my son and my nieces and that, I take myself away from the hustle and bustle of the world and concentrate on these kids who haven’t got a worry in the world. Normality.
“Everything I’m creating, I have someone to pass it down to because I’m not going to be here forever. My son keeps me on course.
“All the things I gain in life – wisdom, material objects – are things I can pass on to the heir to the throne as such. That’s a nice relationship.
“I have a plan for him to go down the educational route because as a fighter, you don’t get to educate yourself. Eton or Harrow? I don’t even know what they are though.”
Joshua went to Wembley yesterday afternoon following the weigh-in to have a feel of the venue.
He has already visualised winning and losing in his dreams but he has no plans to be repeat the tears he shed from the last time he tasted defeat in the final of the 2011 World Amateur Championships in Azerbaijan.
The unbeaten Watford-born fighter steps up against Klitschko, a fading fighter but one who is entering into his 29th world title fight and is vastly more experienced.
But this is the night the man who used to come to these parts for fake goods can prove he is a genuine heavyweight star.

Anthony Joshua will face Wladimir Klitschko for two heavyweight world titles
The Brit is one of the most impressively conditioned heavyweights in the world and took pleasure in showing off his rippling musculature during a relaxed media workout last week.
Even his opponent Klitschko was forced to admit Anthony Joshua had caught his eye – “do you see the muscles?” he said today – and the 18 knockouts in his career are matched by his physique.
One of the main men behind ensuring Joshua remains in peak condition is Rob Madden – a physiotherapist who has been with the 27-year-old since he turned professional a year after winning gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
Madden has overseen 18 consecutive victories and rarely had to deal with many serious problems the week after a fight.
But the most impressive performance to date in the physio’s book came when he beat Dominic Breazeale to defend his world title for the very first time.
“AJ’s power expenditure is phenomenal,” Madden told Express Sport.
“We’ve got the data on that and if you look at the kind of force he can generate through his lower body and out to his arms is amazing.
“His ability to generate force with speed repetitively is one in an million or even more. Probably the best fight to demonstrate that was against [Dominic] Breazeale.
“He took so many hits but AJ was able to go for six or seven rounds at an incredibly hard work rate.

Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko: Tale of the tape
“He’s never gone longer than that so it will be interesting to see what happens on Saturday.”
Breazeale last 19 minutes and one second in the ring with Joshua, almost matching Dillian Whyte who was also stopped by the Brit in the seventh round.
Klitschko, an awkward, canny boxer, is expected to take Joshua into round seven and beyond.
But Madden insists nothing has changed in the Joshua camp. He has been training for 12 rounds since the day he turned professional, even when he was invariably winning inside the first two rounds.
“In the early fights, he would go backstage afterwards and hit the bag,” Madden added.
“The training has evolved as his career has gone on – it would be crazy if they hadn’t – but really the pillars of what he does are the same.
“He’s got the same coach he’s always had and he has a phenomenal amount of trust and faith in that relationship.
“Rob [McCracken] does the same stuff with him each camp. Obviously they work on weaknesses and build on strengths and as support staff we have a routine that we try to get better and better as we go but we don’t change anything.

Anthony Joshua is a world champion – but his group of friends has stayed the same
“It’s tempting to think that it’s the biggest fight of his career and there’s something we need to do.
“Do we need to get a cryochamber in and use that every day or start new supplements?
“Actually, the answer is no. Everything has gone well so far.
“As a team, we’re of the philosophy that we’ve got a working, winning model, he’s winning, we’re happy and we don’t want to change anything.”
Routine is an important part of Joshua’s fight week – Madden calls him a creature of habit, whether that be winning, knocking people out or training and looking after his body.
The friends and family he has around him are the same people with whom he celebrated gold in London and the 27-year-old carries himself with a maturity beyond his years.
Madden has spent time travelling between London and Sheffield for sessions with the heavyweight, often getting back home late at night, only to wake up the next morning to a message from his boxer
“AJ is an amazing character,” Madden said.
“He’s really positive and he’s a real pleasure to work with. I’ve worked with various different athletes but he’s unique.
“He’s hugely hard-working in his ethic in the gym and has a great relationship with his team and his old friends.
“He hasn’t changed since he turned pro but he’s matured in terms of his training knowledge and knowing his body, his recovery and respecting his body more than ever.”
Irrespective of his maturity and kindness, Joshua will go to war on Saturday with the ultimate elder statesman in Klitschko. If he beats the 41-year-old, he will assume the crown for which he was annointed as the world’s best heavyweight, and he will do it with the same people who prepared him for that first pro appearance in October 2013.
Afterwards, he doesn’t even have plans for a holiday.
“He just wants to have a spa and chill with his friends and family,” Madden added.
