Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid welcomed Professor Kehinde Andrews and journalist Tom Harwood onto Good Morning Britain today to discuss whether controversial historical statues should remain after the statue of plantation and slave over Robert Milligan was removed in London, following Black Lives Matter protestors who toppled a Edward Colston statue. During a debate on whether the statue of Lord Nelson should be taken down and if so, should the Nelson Mandela statue be pulled down too, Andrews compared Hitler with Winston Churchill.

Morgan asked: “Would you target Lord Nelson and by the same logic would you target Nelson Mandela?”

Andrews dismissed the idea of Mandela’s statue being pulled down before addressing an earlier argument between Harwood and Morgan on whether he would have agreed with statues of Hitler being pulled down.

Morgan hit back: “I rate Mandela along with Churchill as the two greatest people of my lifetime. I had the pleasure of meeting him, he was a remarkable man and he came out as a man of peace but he went into prison as a man who advocated violence for political ambition and he’s admitted himself that he did that.

“My point is you can construct a negative about Mandela as you can about Churchill and others, where is the line?”

Explaining his argument, Andrews said: “I just want to really point this out; the two people you mentioned – Winston Churchill and Lord Nelson are both famous for what?

“Violence! I mean, levels of violence which ail in comparison to the small amounts of violence Mandela committed.”

He continued: “The key thing about this is, what is the history we want to remember, statues are not about history –  you don’t learn about history from walking around the street, you learn history from schools etc.

“It’s what is the version of history we want to present and do you want a version of history that is slave traders, colonists, fascists – is that what you want in your public space?

“That’s the debate that we’re having and I think it’s about high time we get rid of theses statues – however we get rid of them – these campaigns have been going for years and sometimes to make an omelette you have to crack eggs.”

Andrews said: “That’s one of the things about the racism of the Nazis, eugenics, University Central London where they’ll be tearing their statue soon. Churchill believed in eugenics and those beliefs which led to the extermination of the Jews were not that different the beliefs that led to the slavery of us they can from the same place.”

Interrupting, Morgan said: “I’ve got to defend Winston Churchill, when this country was threatened with its greatest threat to civilisation we ever had, of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis and when it looked like the odds were insurmountable, he almost single–handedly railed this country to defeat the most racist person there’s ever been.”

“That’s why I said to you, you can paint a negative picture of the early life of Nelson Mandela too, many people did. I’m not equating them but if you’re going to equate Churchill to Hitler you’re making an equivalent that I find offensive too,” Morgan added.

Those watching the discussion at home took to Twitter to express their own views on the matter.

One said: “If you can’t accept that Churchill held racist views & made comments in favour of eugenics while also doing a great thing in fighting against Hitler then you’re very blinkered.  All those things can be true at the same time (and they are)  #GMB.”

“Get this idiotic professor off comparing Churchill to Hitler. #GMB.” someone else wrote.

Another added: “Fair argument until he compared Churchill to Hitler.. absolute idiot #gmb.”

“Wow, this bloke comparing Churchill to Hitler.. @piersmorgan is right when he says that’s offensive #GMB,” a viewer wrote.

Someone else argued: “To be clear, In the mind of Britain, Churchill wasn’t a racist he just did and said racist things #GMB.”

and Afua Hirsch got into a heated debate over Winston Churchill’s status as a British historical hero.

The Good Morning Britain host slammed Ms Hirsch’s attempts to “besmirch” Churchill with claims suggesting the former PM was racist.

Mr Morgan said: “The problem is that you take national heroes who have done extraordinary things for this country and you pick holes and you try to besmirch them and disparage their reputation. Why?

“You know what? Beating Adolf Hitler, winning the war, stopping him exterminating every Jew he could get his hands on, these to me are far greater achievements than the negatives that lurk in his past, which lurk in anybody’s past.”

The exchange became increasingly heated, with Mr Morgan challenging the British writer to name one British hero she has “complete respect for”.

But Ms Hirsch struggled to name someone, claiming she was not “comfortable with the concept of hero”.

He continued: “Who do you respect? Which national British hero – you are British, you said – do you actually have complete respect for? Name one.

“You don’t have anybody you can point to? You can’t name a single person in British history you deem to be heroic.”

Ms Hirsch hit back at the GMB host arguing she found Winston Churchill’s flaws more fascinating than the “propagandistic version of history”.

She said: “I am not comfortable with the idea of heroes. The concept of hero is unhelpful

“I am a British person, I think a fundamental British value is integrity and intellectual curiosity and I can’t understand why we as a modern nation in 2018 are only comfortable with the propagandist version of history.

“Why can’t we have a more interesting relationship with history? Churchill was far more fascinating than the cardboard cutout saint that we paint him to be. He was a deeply flawed man.”

Jordan Peele Announces New Horror Movie ‘Us’, Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss & Winston Duke In Talks To Star https://briefnews.eu/jordan-peele-announces-new-horror-movie-us-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-winston-duke-in-talks-to-star/ https://briefnews.eu/jordan-peele-announces-new-horror-movie-us-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-winston-duke-in-talks-to-star/#respond Wed, 09 May 2018 09:08:26 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/jordan-peele-announces-new-horror-movie-us-lupita-nyongo-elisabeth-moss-winston-duke-in-talks-to-star/ New Jordan Peele Movie

Jordan Peele just took to social media to announce his next horror movie: Us, billed as “a new nightmare.” And that’s not all: Lupita Nyong’o, Elisabeth Moss and Winston Duke are in talks to star.

Ready for a new Jordan Peele horror movie? I sure as hell am, and here it comes (in 2019)! Peele jumped onto social media tonight and announced the film’s title via a teaser poster.

Per Variety, Lupita Nyong’o and Elisabeth Moss are both in talks to star. The Hollywood Reporter adds that Black Panther break-out Winston Duke is in talks as well. Beyond the potential casting news, there’s not much else to go on here. THR says the plot centers on “two couples, one white, one black”, but that’s about it.

One thing we do know: the film will be another horror film from the Get Out filmmaker. The tagline on the teaser poster advertises Us as a “new nightmare” from Peele. And when asked in the past about what his next project would be, Peele confirmed it would be another film in the horror genre:

“One thing I know is that this is genre, and playing around with the thriller, horror, action, fun, genre of intrigue is my favorite. That’s my sweet spot. So I think tonally it should resemble Get Out. That said, I want to make a completely different movie. I want to address something different than race in the next one.”

Peele also added:

“What do I do next? How do I top [Get Out]? And you know, and I think it’s important to focus on stories that are true to me. I go, when writing Get Out, my sort of mantra is or was, ‘Let’s write my favorite film I haven’t seen yet.’ So I think it’s easy to get sort of bogged down in ‘how does this compare to the first one, how does that compare?’ When all is said and done, my next film, I am currently writing it and I’ll direct for Universal this year, I’m just trying to entertain myself again.”

Get Out was a huge hit, and became a film that blossomed into a bonafide cultural phenomenon. On top of that, it garnered several Oscar nominations and landed Peele an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Since then, Peele has been keeping busy, primarily producing projects, including the upcoming HBO series Lovecraft Country and the TBS series The Last O.G.

Us will mark Peele’s first return to directing since Get Out, and honestly it can’t get here fast enough. Peele making a new horror movie with this potential cast sounds too damn good to be true, but I’m thrilled it’s happening. Look for Us in March 2019.

Overwatch skins: Winston, Mei and Sombra’s new event outfits for Uprising 2018 https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/ https://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/#respond Tue, 10 Apr 2018 03:36:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/overwatch-skins-winston-mei-and-sombras-new-event-outfits-for-uprising-2018/

While we have already seen the new outfits coming for Hanzo, Mei and Sombra, today also saw another reveal made by Blizzard for the returning Uprising 2018 event.

New Overwatch skins for Winston were unveiled tonight on the official Twitter account.

It fits in with the ones already revealed for both Sombra and Doomfist, which are a lot different from the designs used for Mei and Hanzo.

Fans can expect around 60 new cosmetic item to go live tomorrow, with a mix of fresh emotes, sprays and skins being added to the game.

That’s without including all the returning outfits from last year’s Uprising event, which included some fan favourites.

Other events have seen older skins cost 1,000 credits, instead of the usual 3,000 credits for Legendary items.

It should also be noted that other events saw prices set at 750 credits for Epic skins, 225 credits for Rare cosmetics and 75 credits for common items.

And not only will there be a new seasonal Retribution event included that chronicles a Blackwatch mission in Venice, but we’re also set to get a nifty new feature.

Blizzard have now confirmed that a special option is being added to the game on April 10 that will help players to avoid peers they deem a bit too toxic.

Players will soon be able to add players to an in-game list so that they can avoid being paired as teammates again.

It’s been available on the PTR since late March and looks set to make its debut this week on live servers.

Game directer Jeff Kaplan spoke about the feature in a recent developers update, telling fans it was being put in place “when you’re frustrated with a teammate but it’s not necessarily a reportable offensive.”

It appears to be something to use against those you find annoying, rather than offensive.

Those who do use this option a lot may well see delay loading into games, especially if they’re a high-ranking player.

The field starts to thin out for matchmaking when you reach a certain tier, while Blizzard have also confirmed that those who have been avoided a certain amount of times will also see a warning pop up about it.

The game did have the avoid player feature just after launch but it was removed due to Blizzard believing it was being used to filter out the better players.

“As with all of our systems, we’re paying very close attention,” Kaplan said.

“We hope that you enjoy having more control over your experience in Overwatch, and we’re going to continue to bring features to you that let you craft the experience exactly how you want it to be.”

“Travel eight years into the past and join Blackwatch as they seek to capture a high-ranking member of the Talon organization,” reads a Blizzard blog post.

“Fight in the streets of Venice as Genji, Moira, McCree, or Reyes (later known as Reaper) to complete the mission and unlock pieces of the past with over 100 items from last year and 60 new ones—including highlight intros, emotes, sprays, and more.”

The original Uprising event missions which focused on Tracer’s first mission as an Overwatch agent will also be returning this for the limited run.

Fans can also expect the return of the popular Combat Medic Ziegler, Cadet Oxton, Talon and Chief Engineer Lindholm skins.

Returning skins are typically available at a discounted price, so if you’ve got any spare in-game cash, it’s worth waiting until next week to spend it.

The 59-year-old actor looks almost certain to win the Best Actor Oscar at the 90th Academy Awards on Sunday evening.

Oldman portrayed Sir Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour, garnering large critical acclaim for his performance.

Covering just a few weeks in 1940, there is still much of the World War II primer minister’s life that could be explored and Oldman is certainly open to at least two other projects.

According to , the actor is adapting a short story by Churchill – based on a dream he had – into a play and is interested in a film sequel to Darkest Hour, set in 1945 at the end of the war.

On the play, Oldman said: “It’s [about] the ghost of his father, Randolph, who visits him in his studio at Chartwell [Churchill’s country residence].

“It’s two people, not an expensive thing to do. It might be something I’ll try and get on its feet.

“I long to go back [to the stage]. It’ll be quite terrifying, I’m sure, after 20 years.”

On a follow-up to Darkest Hour, the actor continued: “There could be [a sequel] because at the end of the war, there’s the summit with Stalin and [Roosevelt].”

He added: “Roosevelt’s a great character; he’s on his way out. So maybe.

“[But] I need a break from the makeup chair.”

Phillip Schofield speechless as Winston Churchill’s typist reveals UNBELIEVABLE secret https://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-speechless-as-winston-churchills-typist-reveals-unbelievable-secret/ https://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-speechless-as-winston-churchills-typist-reveals-unbelievable-secret/#respond Wed, 10 Jan 2018 12:28:22 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/phillip-schofield-speechless-as-winston-churchills-typist-reveals-unbelievable-secret/

Joy Hunter worked as a typist in the War Cabinet during World War Two and spilled some exciting gossip about her time with Churchill.

She laid to rest the idea that the Conservative leader was a “bulldog”, explaining that he was “affable”.

“I normally saw him in the corridor and he would always stop and speak and say, ‘good morning’, or ‘good evening’,” the 92-year-old said.

She added: “The civilians found him very affable indeed.”

What’s more, Hunter confessed that Churchill found it incredibly difficult to switch off at night and would often sneak around the War Rooms when he was left alone.

She laughed: “The story goes that when he was going to bed he would say, ‘Make sure you let Mrs Churchill know I’m downstairs.’

“But apparently when his aide left he would stand on the roof – he wanted to be where the action is. [He was] a real war man at heart.”

Meanwhile, viewers were completely in awe of Hunter, and flocked to Twitter to discuss the amazing lady and her stories.

One wrote: “What an amazing lady Joy is. Thanks for sharing her story @thismorning Unsung hero of ww2.”(sic)

A second gushed: “I could listen to Joy all morning! What fantastic stories to tell!”

A third added: “This lady – Joy Hunter – needs to be recognised by the honours system. OBE MBE CBE – She deserves it – What a woman.”

This Morning airs weekdays on ITV from 10.30am.

Groping Allegation Against NFL Star Jameis Winston https://briefnews.eu/groping-allegation-against-nfl-star-jameis-winston/ https://briefnews.eu/groping-allegation-against-nfl-star-jameis-winston/#respond Fri, 17 Nov 2017 17:51:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/groping-allegation-against-nfl-star-jameis-winston/

The NFL is investigating an allegation that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston grabbed a female Uber driver’s crotch in 2016, BuzzFeed News has learned.

A letter, viewed by BuzzFeed News, was sent from the NFL’s special counsel for investigations, Lisa Friel, to the Uber driver on Thursday. “The League has been informed that you may have been the victim of such a violation perpetrated by Tampa Bay Buccaneers player Jameis Winston. The league takes allegations of this nature very seriously and has opened an investigation into this matter,” the letter read.

“The matter is under review,” Brian McCarthy, an NFL spokesman, told BuzzFeed News.

Kate, a female Uber driver, was hailed to the lively party scene of downtown Scottsdale, Arizona to pick up a passenger around 2 a.m. on Sunday March 13, 2016. There, Kate told BuzzFeed News that a small group of men excitedly told her that she would be chauffeuring someone famous that night — Jameis Winston, 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and now quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The men placed Winston in the front passenger seat — Kate said he was the only passenger. “I started driving, and right away, Jameis behaved poorly” by shouting, in part, homophobic slurs at pedestrians, said Kate, who did not want to be identified by her full name for fear of negative attention and potential backlash from football fans. He then asked to stop for food.

Waiting in line at the drive-thru of Los Betos Mexican Food, “he reached over and he just grabbed my crotch,” Kate said, alleging that Winston held his hand there for three to five seconds and removed it only after she looked up in shock and said, “What’s up with that?”

“I wasn’t just creeped out,” said Kate, who had been driving with Uber for more than two years at that point. (She no longer drives for the service.) “I was frozen.” She described Winston as “very physically imposing.”

“I mean he’s an NFL quarterback and I’m 5 ft 6. I’m not prepared for that. So I completely froze,” she said, worried that she might provoke an unwanted reaction.

Winston’s representative, Russ Spielman, issued a statement denying the allegations: “We categorically deny this allegation. It is our understanding the uber driver was unable to identify the specific individual who allegedly touched this driver inappropriately. The only reason his name is being dragged in to this is that his uber account was used to call the ride.”

When asked about the NFL’s letter, he said, “I don’t have a comment on that, what you’re hearing is the first time I’m hearing about that.”

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t respond to multiple requests for comment.

Kate said she doesn’t want money, and that the reason she came forward with her story now was because she wanted to tell the truth “about a powerful man who felt entitled to my body when all I wanted to do was my job.”

“I have been empowered by my sisters who have forged this path by speaking up, and I must do my part to make it a little more well traveled,” Kate said to BuzzFeed News. “If I’m silent, I fear that further harm will come to other women, if it hasn’t already.”

She added, “He sexually assaulted me, and I have every right to tell the damn truth about it.”

Kate filed a complaint with Uber soon after the ride, writing that “apparently a big athlete in the nfl” reached over “and put his fingers on my crotch.” She added: “…it wasn’t my stomach or thigh, it was my crotch and I want to be clear about that.” Kate ended her incident report with Uber stating, “He is NOT safe for other drivers.”

BuzzFeed News has reviewed the incident report to Uber, in addition to the Uber ride’s trip details, as well as her exchanges with an Uber representative.

In response to the alleged incident the Uber representative wrote, “That kind of rider behavior is absolutely not tolerated on the platform, I recommend contacting law enforcement as soon as possible.” (Kate said she didn’t go to the police for the same reasons she didn’t want to be named in this article.)

The Uber representative also wrote that the driver would not be “matched with this rider going forward” and that, “While our privacy policy prevents me from disclosing the exact action taken, in the past riders with these kind of instances have not been welcomed back to the service.”

Eventually, the rider was banned from Uber. “The behavior the driver reported is disturbing and wrong. The rider was permanently removed from the app shortly after we learned of the incident,” a spokesperson for Uber told BuzzFeed News in a statement.

Based on the ride receipt, trip identification number, and name —Jameis Winston — that Kate gave BuzzFeed News, Uber said that the account holder that evening was removed from the ride-sharing service.

Kate also said she told five people about the alleged incident soon after it happened. BuzzFeed News corroborated basic details of Kate’s account with all five individuals, who all declined to be named in order to protect Kate, in addition to reviewing Kate’s text messages to a friend from the night of the incident that names Winston. (Kate told BuzzFeed News, “I didn’t want to be publicly known as the woman who Jameis Winston groped.”)

The alleged incident occurred nine months before Winston settled a civil lawsuit with a woman who accused him of rape in 2012, when both were students at Florida State University. The terms of the settlement are confidential. “I did not rape or sexually assault [name redacted]. I did not create a hostile, intimidating or offensive environment in the short period of time that we were together,” Winston said in a statement as part of a Florida State State code of conduct hearing, obtained by USA Today.

And earlier in 2016, Florida State University settled a lawsuit with the woman and was ordered to pay $ 950,000. A 2014 New York Times investigation, based on documents from the university and police, “found that Florida State and the Tallahassee police had done little to determine what happened in the Winston case.” Winston’s accuser, Erica Kinsman, came publicly forward in the documentary “The Hunting Ground,” which explores the failures of college and university administrations to deal with allegations of sexual assault. In a letter to CNN two days before the documentary was set to air, lawyers for Winston threatened to sue the news network , writing that the documentary was “false and defamatory to Mr. Winston.”

Even before Kinsman’s appeared in the documentary, her name was leaked to the public and for months she became the target for severe online harassment. Football fans began distributing her personal information and pictures on social media, and Winston’s lawyer would name Kinsman so often that it began to raise questions.

“All these people were praising him. People were just calling me names; a slut, a whore,” Kinsman said in the documentary. “People were threatening me, my family, and there were other people that were threatening my sorority saying, ‘We’re going to burn down their house.’”

Charlie Gard: Piers Morgan and Robert Winston CLASH amid Pope ‘interference’ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-gard-piers-morgan-and-robert-winston-clash-amid-pope-interference/ https://briefnews.eu/charlie-gard-piers-morgan-and-robert-winston-clash-amid-pope-interference/#respond Wed, 05 Jul 2017 07:33:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/charlie-gard-piers-morgan-and-robert-winston-clash-amid-pope-interference/

Eminent scientist and broadcaster Lord Winston,76, was challenged by Morgan, 52, over the tragic case, saying that the parents of the infant should at least be given a chance to try one last treatment.

The presenter referred to an interview on yesterday’s show in which a father whose child had a variant of the mitochondrial DNA depletion syndrome that baby Charlie was allowed to undergo the treatment and as a result is still alive months later.

Morgan explained: “He said, “There’s a tiny chance.’ This is the jist of this story – not withstanding the brilliance of Great Ormond Street and it’s the greatest hospital in the world – isn’t there just a human aspect to this story? What do any of us have to lose to let this boy have this treatment?”

Robert replied: “That’s why you have to respect the autonomy of the parents, that seems to be sacrosanct, the key issue. The problem is that you have to make a judgement about the kind of mitochondrial mutation that is present in those cells. Presumably [the authorities] must have looked at this in some detail. The fact that one child with a different cells has improved doesn’t mean [this child will].”

However, Morgan did not stop as he asked: “There must be a possibly?” Lord Winston responded: “I’m not there. I think the risk of course from a pure bystander, who doesn’t have the same knowledge – in the same way as the Vatican or Trump have that knowledge – you have to assume that decision was taken with great difficulty. You don’t let somebody die if you think there’s a chance.”

He added that the decision made by the medical staff and the courts had to be respected, explaining that it was not a conclusion they would have come to lightly.

Lord Winston went onto criticise the Vatican and US President Donald Trump for what he branded their “interference” in the case, saying that it was “unhelpful”.

In response ITV host Morgan admitted: “I’m really concerned as I am torn between my worship of Great Ormond Street but the parent in me – like anyone in this situation – says these parents are desperate to have a go.”

The scientist and Child of Our Time broadcaster warned that undergoing further treatment could be more detrimental to Charlie: “I agree with you. The probability is that this will be even more tragic and even more disturbing for this child to be travelling to Italy or wherever it goes.”

Lord Winston’s appearance comes as the Vatican offered to take in the terminally-ill baby and admit him to its children’s hospital.

President Trump, 71, has also tweeted his support and posted earlier this week on Twitter: “If we can help little #CharlieGard, as per our friends in the U.K. and the Pope, we would be delighted to do so.”

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV at 6am.

‘Churchill’ Trailer: Brian Cox Struggles with War as Winston Churchill https://briefnews.eu/churchill-trailer-brian-cox-struggles-with-war-as-winston-churchill/ https://briefnews.eu/churchill-trailer-brian-cox-struggles-with-war-as-winston-churchill/#respond Tue, 25 Apr 2017 06:44:51 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/churchill-trailer-brian-cox-struggles-with-war-as-winston-churchill/ Churchill Trailer - Brian Cox

Hollywood loves history, but it can be a real challenge to bring a real life event to the big screen, especially when it involves people that some of the public lived through and experienced through the radio and television. Churchill will attempt to chronicle the struggle of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) as he deals with the impending start of D-Day during World War II in 1944. It looks like it could be a typical awards contender, but that might be difficult since the movie hits theaters this summer.

Watch the Churchill trailer below.

Even though Churchill is hitting theaters this summer, Brian Cox looks to be delivering the kind of performance that could still end up getting some love when awards season rolls around late in the year. At the same time, there’s not anything particularly compelling about this movie besides seeing Brian Cox’s compelling performance. I’ll admit that the cinematography looks fantastic, but otherwise, this feels like plenty of other biopics we’ve seen of political figures before, especially from the United States and the United Kingdom.

Another hurdle that Churchill might have in getting attention, even though it’s arriving first on the scene, is that there’s a competing movie about Winston Churchill called The Darkest Hour that’s set a few years before the events of this movie. That one stars Gary Oldman, and his transformation into the prime minister is far more stunning, albeit on a surface level. With a prime awards season release date of November 24, that one is definitely looking for a shot at some awards attention. But we haven’t seen either movie yet, so who knows?

Churchill is directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (The Railway Man, Better Than Sex) with a script by Alex von Tunzelmann and it also stars John Slattery, Miranda Richardson, Ella Purnell, James Purefoy, Richard Durden, and Julian Wadham. If you’d like to see more, you can watch the UK trailer for the film right here.

Tensions mount for the beleaguered British Prime Minister Winston Churchill (Brian Cox) in the days leading up to infamous Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, France in June, 1944. Fearful of repeating his deadly mistakes from World War I in the Battle of Gallipoli, exhausted by years of war, plagued by depression and obsessed with his historical destiny, Churchill is reluctant to embark on the large-scale campaign, one that the entire war effort hinges upon. Clashing with his Allied political opponents U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower (John Slattery) and British Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (Julian Wadham), the troubled Churchill receives support and devotion from his wife, the brilliant and unflappable Clementine Churchill (Miranda Richardson). With her strength and shrewdness, “Clemmie” halts Winston’s physical, mental spiritual collapse and inspires him on to greatness.

Churchill in theaters starting on June 2 this summer.

Winston Churchill’s SECRET bunkers hidden all over Britain in THESE classified locations https://briefnews.eu/winston-churchills-secret-bunkers-hidden-all-over-britain-in-these-classified-locations/ https://briefnews.eu/winston-churchills-secret-bunkers-hidden-all-over-britain-in-these-classified-locations/#respond Wed, 08 Mar 2017 21:40:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/winston-churchills-secret-bunkers-hidden-all-over-britain-in-these-classified-locations/

Back in the 1940s, winning the second World War was by no means assured for Great Britain and the allied forces.

The threat of invasion by the Germans hung over the country – the Nazis had already made their way into Norway, Denmark, France and the Low Countries, and it was feared England would be next.

The country was already being bombed from above by German fighter pilots.

In preparation, over 600 secret bunkers were set up in the midst of the countryside, with units of armed men tasked with staying behind and fighting the enemy in case of invasion.

“The regular defences require supplementing with guerrilla type troops, who will allow themselves to be overrun and who thereafter will be responsible for hitting the enemy in the comparatively soft spots behind zones of concentrated attack,” announced the War Cabinet in July 1940.

These special units were trained to use guerrilla tactics, such as going behind the Germans as they advanced and carrying out pin prick attacks.

The underground bunkers were built by the British Army as bases for the stay-behind units.

As many as 1,000 may have been dug, but the locations of many of these have been lost

A large number of the bunkers have fallen into disrepair and have collapsed in on themselves – to the casual observer, they would just look like holes in the ground.

You have to know where to look for them in order to find them.

But recently these secret bunkers have piqued the interest of historians, war veterans and enthusiasts alike – and more and more people are attempting to discover their locations.

“The units were set up 10 miles from vulnerable coasts, in South Wales, South England, East Anglia and beyond,” John Warwicker, author of Churchill’s Underground Army: A History of the Auxiliary Units in World War II, told the Daily Mail.

“There were about 30 to 35 units in each county with six men per unit.”

Mr Warwicker told the Mail that one was in the basement of a burnt-out manor house, one was in a badger’s set and another was located in an old root cellar.

The units, and therefore the bunkers, were never needed in the end. Germany invaded Russia in 1941, and it seemed like Britain was no longer a prime target for Nazi invasion.

The underground bunkers were supposed to be destroyed after the war, but many remained to rot instead.

And their locations remain a secret to this day – the details have never been released.

However, British Resistance Archive researchers continue to search for the hidden bunkers and discover their secrets.
