Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star pulled off two reunions at once when it tapped Lisa Edelstein to play Gwyneth Morgan, the ex-wife of Rob Lowe’s Owen Strand.

In the 9-1-1 spinoff’s Season 2 premiere, airing Monday, Jan. 18 at 9/8c, the 126 crew responds to a military tank on the loose in downtown Austin and a human pile-up at the roller derby. Meanwhile, Owen is reunited with Gwyneth — a powerhouse New York lawyer who comes to Austin in the wake of their son T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) being shot — just as he receives an update on his cancer.

TVLine spoke with Edelstein, whose previous TV credits include of course House and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, about not just working with but seeing West Wing scene partner Rob Lowe for the first time in some 20 years.

TVLINE | As a West Wing fan, your casting was a fun bit of news to report.
I know! It’s superfun. They called me [during Season 1], but the timing wasn’t going to work out. And then they had all summer to write a really good part for me. [Laughs] They did such a good job.

TVLINE | What is the state of the union between Gwyneth and Owen?
T.K., their son, was shot in Season 1, she she goes to Austin to nurse him back to health. In the meantime, Rob’s character has to go through the rest of his chemo, so he ends up getting really sick. While she’s there, the pandemic hits, so she is kind of “stuck” there for a lot longer than she expected to be — and then “the magic happens.” [Gwyn and Owen] sort of remember both why they were together to begin with, and why they got divorced. It’s a really great match. She’s really bright, she gives him as much s–t as she feels like giving him, and she sees through everything, so you can see this really fun history that they had. I had a lot of fun doing it, and it was fun also because Rob and I had history.

TVLINE | Speaking of that history, was the casting pure serendipity, or was someone out to reunite The West Wing‘s Sam and Laurie?
It was a combo. I think they really loved the idea of runiting Sam and Laurie, it gave the casting a bit more meaning. They also liked our chemistry.

TVLINE | Laurie was a memorable character from The West Wing‘s launch. At that point in late 1999/early 2000, were people flagging you down on the street, “Hey, Sam Seaborn’s hooker!”?
The funny thing is that we did all the D.C. stuff at the end of shooting Season 1. The second episode, where Sam barges into the restaurant where Laurie is with a client? We shot that 10 months after we shot the pilot, when the show was already a big hit and had a lot of momentum, so everybody in D.C. knew about my character and they were very excited to meet “the hooker.” [Senator] Al Franken was like, “Oh, you’re the hooker!” “Oh, you’re Al Franken!”

TVLINE | How recently had you and Rob seen each other, prior to Lone Star?
I hadn’t seen him since I did West Wing with him.

TVLINE | Whoa! Not even at, like, The Ivy or wherever all the fabulous celebs hang out these days?
[Laughs] Right, we all live in one house, all the famous people! No, I had never seen him, not once. The funny thing is that for the first day of West Wing I was in bed, smoking a joint in my underwear, and the first day of Lone Star was in bed, in pasties.

911: Lone Star Season 2TVLINE | In Gwyneth’s eyes, what was the problem with Owen as a husband? What is his character flaw?
There have been some hints that his relationship to his work at the firehouse in New York took priority over everything else. They’re both also strong-willed people, and they are great together in some ways, but they also don’t let each other get away with anything at all. I think they both really love each other — it’s not a relationship that was ever filled with animosity. They just grew out of each other and moved on.

I also think 9/11 was a big part of the demise of their relationship, because he was in the [fire]house next to the Twin Towers, and the stress of that disaster was very hard on both of them. I don’t think he handled it particularly gracefully, and it killed what was left of their relationship.

TVLINE | For how long do we have you on Lone Star?
I think I’ll be there throughout the whole season. I’m heavy in the beginning, I know — we got five episodes in before the holidays.

Kominsky Method EdelsteinTVLINE | And we will also see more of you on The Kominsky Method?
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I’m very excited about Kominsky. I play Alan Arkin’s drug-addled daughter, and it’s a really fun part.

TVLINE | Now, Alan won’t be around for the third and final season….
Right, but they brought in Kathleen Turner, which was equally fun and exciting. And Paul Reiser started in Season 2, and he’s always wonderful. And Michael Douglas is a total mensch, a lovely person.

TVLINE | And with that mention of Michael Douglas, we’ve come full circle, seeing as The American President very much sired The West Wing.
That’s true! That’s true.

Cue up W.G. Snuffy Walden’s Emmy-winning West Wing theme in your head, because the HBO Max special that reunites the acclaimed drama’s original cast promises to make your Barlet-loving heart salute.

Premiering Thursday, Oct. 15, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote marks the first time in 17 years that the original cast of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning drama has come together — accompanied by series creator Aaron Sorkin and executive producer/director Thomas Schlamme, for a theatrical stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from Season 3.

Among the chosen episode’s plotlines, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman anxiously awaits the 42 votes cast by the titular town in a portentous New Hampshire presidential primary. “It’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance,” Richard Schiff, who returns as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler, tells TVLine. “That’s why it was so special to do this particular episode.”

In addition to Schiff, OG cast members Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Janel Moloney also reprise their respective roles from the episode, while Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) succeeds the late John Spencer as White House chief of staff Leo McGarry.

TVLine spoke with Schiff about the special’s “poignant” timeliness, what about the staging gave him goosebumps, and more.

TVLINE | I don’t think I realized how excited I was for this special until the trailer came out, and I got so emotional watching just those 90 seconds. When’s the last time that anywhere close to this many of you were together in one space?
This many of us? It’s been a while. We’ve been together maybe with this many of us but with different groupings, like Joshua Malina (who played Will  Bailey) instead of Rob [Lowe]. When we were campaigning in ’16 in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, that was a pretty big group with Mary McCormack (who played Kate Harper), and Josh, and Allison, and Brad, and Dule. Other than that, it might have been a party at Allison’s house. And I think Brad had a dinner at his house about five or six years ago, and that was the last time we were all together sitting down.

TVLINE | Is a stage reenactment like this something you would be game for anyway, or did the “Get Out the Vote” cause make it a must do?
Well, it seems like anytime that they ask The West Wing to come together for some reason or another, it’s for political reasons, so it’s not a surprise that this is to help to get out to vote, that that’s our cause. But just to get back together for the sake of getting back together, other casts get to do that and reap millions of dollars from it, but we of course have to do it pro bono because we’re good people. [Laughs]  But that’s what makes it so special, literally special, because there’s a purpose behind it, and it always feels better to do this kind of work for a reason. Otherwise, it’s just kind of self-congratulatory or, you know…

TVLINE | A cash grab?
A cash grab, exactly — which I don’t have a major objection to in principle! [Chuckles] But that doesn’t seem to be who we are.

West Wing Reunion Leo RecastTVLINE | There is one new face in the mix, and while Sterling K. Brown is a fine, fine, Emmy-winning actor, he’s almost a decade younger than John Spencer ever was in the role. Might that change a bit how we perceive Leo in this?
No, because it’s really about gravity. It’s really about the ability to understand, to have the knowledge and the gravity to appreciate each other in the world, and Sterling Brown has that hyperintelligence and gravity that John Spencer had. It’s actually a brilliant choice.

always go back to my acting class in college, when a 20-year-old girl played the mother of another 20-year-old girl, and we were so engrossed in the scene. The master teacher, Earle Gister, who was my mentor, said, “You see, when you believe it, they believe it.” And there was no question that we believed that Kim, who played the mother, was the mother of Otta, who played the daughter, because they believed it. So age never even crossed my mind when Sterling was on set, no.

TVLINE | I’m always fascinated when an actor goes to reprise a role that they haven’t played for like 15, 20 years. Was there something you had to remind yourself about Toby to really lock back onto the character?
You know, Aaron [Sorkin] was so good at capturing or utilizing elements of who we were as people that eventually it filtered into the role, into the character, so Toby was very much made up of Aaron’s mind but my soul and my body, and it’s hard to separate that after doing it for seven years. In fact, when I go off on political stuff — which I would, of course, not be invited to do if I didn’t play the part — it’s very hard for me to create my own persona as opposed to going there as Toby. Of course, that’s what they would rather see — they would rather see Toby give a speech than Richard give a speech — but it’s easy for me to capture his passion, and his depth, and complexity.

West Wing Reunion

TVLINE | One thing I remember fondly about Toby is he could cut you off at the knees and make you feel like the dumbest person in the room with a casual, muttered aside.
Yes, but that comes from, I think, a real disappointment with humanity while maintaining a hope that somehow we can elevate ourselves to reach our potential. I think that’s what the dichotomy was within him, because his desire to cut people down is minimal. It’s something he could do in his sleep, and it’s not the point. The point is, “Why aren’t people on board with what will make this world a better place?” And when people were not on board is when he became a bit more cutting than he otherwise would be, considering this world is not abiding by Toby’s plan.

In those days, think about what [President George W.] Bush was doing to this country with the Invasion of Iraq, and how different we would be had [Al] Gore been allowed to accept his victory in 2000. Think about where we would be with alternative energy, all these things…. Now when you think about that, it’s mind-boggling. It’s mind-boggling that there’s an existential threat to the very existence of this democracy and that someone is succeeding, with a whole lot of help I’m sure, in stealing this country from us. That’s what makes this particular episode [‘Hartsfield’s Landing”] so much more poignant, because it’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance, and to not be afraid of that. That’s another reason why it was so special to do this particular episode.

West Wing Reunion PreviewTVLINE | Was there a moment on stage when seeing somebody make a gesture or hearing the timbre of a co-star’s voice gave you goosebumps and sent you back 18 years?
I wouldn’t frame it like that, but yeah. I mean, just being across from Martin again, because all of my stuff was with him and a bit with Dulé. Martin has a very particular rhythm with Bartlet, but it was a combination of things. It was Dulé on the set at one point. And then when we’re rehearsing, there’s Aaron pacing back and forth as if he had just written it last week, and Tommy Schlamme with his intense energy. Tommy has the utmost respect for what actors have to do, so despite his hurried disposition to everything, he always yields to what the actor might need for that moment. So that whole dynamic, that perfect storm of ingredients that made up our soup 20 years ago — that’s a mixed metaphor, but you know what I’m saying — was alive again.

TVLINE | It was swirling around inside that theater.
And that was awesome. That was goosebumps right there.

Schitt's Creek Season 5 Premiere Recap: On a Wing and a Prayer https://briefnews.eu/schitts-creek-season-5-premiere-recap-on-a-wing-and-a-prayer/ https://briefnews.eu/schitts-creek-season-5-premiere-recap-on-a-wing-and-a-prayer/#respond Thu, 17 Jan 2019 09:54:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/schitts-creek-season-5-premiere-recap-on-a-wing-and-a-prayer/ The Season 5 premiere of Pop’s addictive Schitt’s Creek was for the birds — but I mean that in a literal way, not as a dis. (Perish the thought!) Not only did the episode take us to Bosnia to see how Moira’s feathers got ruffled on the set of The Crows Have Eyes III, but it allowed us to follow David onto a hilariously uncomfortable perch and revealed how Johnny fared without his wife in their love nest. Read on, and we’ll go over all of the sweetest, funniest bits…

Courtesy of Pop‘ADVENTURE DATES SOUND LIKE SOMETHING A MARRIAGE COUNSELOR WOULD PRESCRIBE AS A LAST RESORT’ | As the episode opened, David, Alexis and Stevie were having a field day playing with Moira’s wigs when Johnny got a call from the set in Bosnia. “Kids, say hi to your mother!” he told them, putting his missus on speaker (as you’d expect, by the hardest). “She’s not my mother,” Stevie quietly replied. (Ah, Stevie! How I’ve missed you!) In short order, Moira mistook every voice that she heard for someone else’s, then cut the conversation short to go meet with her director, who she’d been told was a pretty young up-and-comer from New York. Bummed to have been hung up on, Johnny warned his offspring, “You’d better remember which nails you pulled those wigs from, ’cause your mother keeps a spreadsheet.”

schitts creek season 5 episode 1 recap premiere crowsLater, Alexis admitted to David that she had a concern. “No, your natural deodorant isn’t working,” he shot back. But that wasn’t it. She’d seen the “How Electric Is Your Relationship?” quiz that he’d taken (repeatedly) in a 1981 issue of M’Lady magazine — “It’s Major Lady,” he corrected her — and feared that working side by side with Patrick at the store had moved their romance to Snoozetown. The results, after all, said that his relationship with his boyfriend was in need of a generator, whereas her relationship with Ted was rated an electrical storm. How was that possible? asked David, incredulous. Ted’s a veterinarian who irons his polo shirts! They work at it, Alexis told him, by taking off Friday afternoons to go on adventure dates. In fact, that very afternoon, they’d be taking a tour of Elm Falls Park — “a very cute look for us” — in case David and Patrick wanted to come along.

schitts-creek-season-5-episode 1 recap premiere crows‘IT’S ME, IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT!’ | In Bosnia, Moira reported enthusiastically to the trailer of her director, Blair-no-last-name… and was met with such disinterest that she assumed he was breaking her down just so that he could build her back up again “like Stan Kubrick did to Shelley” Duvall. Alas, he was not. When she attempted to give him her script revisions, he laughed that there was no point. The movie wasn’t, as she thought, “a timely allegory about prejudice,” it was a crapfest about mutant crows. What’s more, to him, all it was was a trip to Bora Bora. Back in Schitt’s Creek, Johnny was having a hard time, too. He missed Moira so much that he’d taken to doing everything on Roland’s to-do list at the motel. “What’s next?” Roland asked Stevie. “I come home and he’s playing strip backgammon with my wife?”

schitts creek season 5 episode 1 recap premiere crowsMeanwhile, David arrived at the apothecary and — Alexis’ words ringing in his ears — did his best to make it seem like he found it super duper sexy to see Patrick doing inventory while wearing rubber thimbles that he insisted made it easier for him to turn the pages. Soon, David was fibbing that Alexis and Ted’s relationship was in trouble — so much so that she’d practically begged them to join in on their park outing. No sooner had Patrick relented and said OK, they could close up shop early, than David came to regret his lie: It turned out that the park tour took place about 30 feet off the ground — and, as his boyfriend noted, David was fearful of heights. OK, maybe not fearful. “‘Fearful,’” David groused, “makes me sound like some kind of Dickensian orphan with a chronic illness.” What’s more, Alexis and Ted seemed as happy to Patrick as happy could get.

schitts-creek-season-5-episode 1 recap premiere crows‘THE SPECIAL IS CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP; WE DON’T ACTUALLY HAVE TO-GO CONTAINERS FOR THAT, SO I’VE JUST DOUBLE BAGGED IT’ | Back in town, Johnny discovered Stevie and Roland having lunch together at the cafe. Had he missed the call for a team meeting? (Actually, yes — the busy bee hadn’t heard them as he was noisily mowing the lawn.) Maybe with Moira away, Roland suggested, Johnny was doing all that work to fill “a big, black, empty hole in [his] life.” Before Johnny could get too offended, Moira phoned, saying that she never should have signed on to the movie. She hadn’t complained when she’d been booked in a bed-or-breakfast, but now it appeared that her director was on a kamikaze mission to sink the ship, and “I refuse to be the goddess on the prow!” Though Johnny clearly missed her like crazy, he encouraged her not to give up on the comeback role that meant so much to her. By the time he was done, Moira was back in fighting form, likening herself to “Sandy Bullock” keeping the Speed franchise alive with Cruise Control.

schitts creek season 5 episode 1 recap premiere crowsOff that pep talk, Moira reapproached Blair. This time, however, she’d done her research and found out that the hot shot had recently been dropped from a blockbuster. That being the case, maybe he could look at their B-movie less as a barrier than a gateway. Bird s— being bird s—, how? he asked. Recalling that during her stint as a soap star she’d held the record for the longest demonic possession in daytime history and once played her own father, she suggested that her script revisions might be a good place to start. Back in Schitt’s Creek, Stevie at last got Johnny to admit that yes, he missed Moira desperately. Eight days, he noted, was the longest they’d been apart in 40 years. To cope with her absence, he’d been working himself into the ground, and now he was pooped. So perhaps he could call Roland and tell him to quit talking about resigning from the job Johnny stole. Er, maybe Stevie could do that? “No,” she deadpanned, “that’s not my job.”

‘QUIET YOUR CAWS SO THAT WE MAY TAKE UP OUR CAUSE: REDEMPTION!’ | Finally, as David wobbled, frozen 30 feet in the air in the middle of a tree rope (which will haunt my nightmares for weeks to come), Patrick recalled that among his fella’s phobias was a fear of aerial breakups. OMG, cried Alexis. She’d forgotten all about her brother’s parasailing incident with Anderson Cooper. Now she was sorry — so sorry that she admitted that, as David originally thought, the relationship quiz was rigged. “In Need of a Generator” was the only answer any couple could get! As he angrily wobbled his way to the tree, he made it clear to Alexis, Ted, Patrick and any sparrow that happened to be nearby that he loved his and Patrick’s relationship, thimbles and all. (As if there had ever been any doubt!) And in Bosnia, to Blair’s astonishment, Moira’s revisions were… working. Thanks to his fowl player, The Crows Have Eyes III just might take flight after all!

So, what did you think of the Season 5 premiere — and Moira’s crow accent! Grade the episode in the poll below, then hit the comments.

Alphabet is re-working its Wing delivery drones to be less noisy https://briefnews.eu/alphabet-is-re-working-its-wing-delivery-drones-to-be-less-noisy/ https://briefnews.eu/alphabet-is-re-working-its-wing-delivery-drones-to-be-less-noisy/#respond Thu, 27 Dec 2018 13:39:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/alphabet-is-re-working-its-wing-delivery-drones-to-be-less-noisy/

Before Alphabet’s Wing drones can start dropping off deliveries all over the globe, the company has to remedy one of the biggest complaints about it first. According to a Wall Street Journal report, the drones are extremely noisy — someone who lives directly under the drones’ path in rural Australia where they’re current being tested described the sound they make as “chainsaw gone ballistic.” Since the tech will not widely adopted if it’s that noisy (especially in dense urban areas) Wing is now developing a quieter drone.

The Alphabet subsidiary, which used to be an X Lab project until it became a standalone company in mid-2018, has been testing its drones in Australia since 2014. Apparently, the machines create so much noise that people don’t even use their yards anymore. In addition, dog owners are avoiding areas where they pass, because the drones make their dogs nervous. Not to mention, the noise could trigger PTSD symptoms in military veterans.

Since it’s going to take a while before Wing can finish designing a quieter drone, the company has implemented changes to its test machines. It has slowed down their speeds and changed their flight paths, so they don’t pass over the same houses all the time. Those who’ve been taking advantage of Wing’s drone delivery love the convenience they bring, though: they can drop off items within five to ten minutes after purchase, after all. If Wing manages to develop quieter drones, retailers and companies might be more open to using the machines in the future.

Flights: Jet2 plane makes ‘petrifying full speed’ emergency landing as wing flaps BREAK https://briefnews.eu/flights-jet2-plane-makes-petrifying-full-speed-emergency-landing-as-wing-flaps-break/ https://briefnews.eu/flights-jet2-plane-makes-petrifying-full-speed-emergency-landing-as-wing-flaps-break/#respond Sun, 26 Aug 2018 12:52:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/flights-jet2-plane-makes-petrifying-full-speed-emergency-landing-as-wing-flaps-break/

A Jet2 flight was forced to execute a “full speed” emergency landing at Manchester Airport after the wing flaps – which serve to slow the plane down – broke before landing.

The flight from Crete was due to land at Leeds Bradford Airport but began circling at around midnight on Friday after a delayed take-off as the wind flaps were malfunctioning.

The wing flaps help to decrease the plane’s speed as it comes into land.

The captain told the Jet2 passengers that they were circling due to a “technical error on the flight deck.”

The captain decided to do an emergency landing at Manchester Airport as the hub has a longer runway.

Passengers have told how the “full speed” landing was “absolutely petrifying” and even the captain seemed scared.

A mother-of-three on board, who didn’t want to be named, told the Manchester Evening News: “The captain said we needed more stopping room because we’re going to be coming in at full speed and just using the brakes.

“Everyone tried to remain really, really calm. There were a lot of kids on board, as you can imagine.

“Even the captain’s voice was shaking, he sounded scared but he just tried to reassure us saying ‘it’s going to be a bumpy landing, we’re going to be greeted by fire engines – but your safety is paramount’.

“It was quite scary coming down the runway, there were fire engines there straight away. You could see the smoke coming off the wheels and the brakes were screaming.”

The mum explained that she got into the brace position as she tried not to panic her children.

Other people remained surprisingly calm but one or two people were texting their family, the passenger told M.E.N.

Luckily the plane successfully landed at Manchester Airport with no reports of any injuries.

The passengers applauded the captain and he came out to greet everyone afterwards.

The fliers praised the captain’s skill but thought he looked quite “shaken up.”

Other passengers revealed they feared the plane was going to be set on fire from the technical malfunction.

“He couldn’t use the flaps to slow down so as soon as we hit the ground he would have to brake flat-out,” Penie Craig, 49, told Hull Live.

“It was just awful and my first thought was, ‘Oh my God, the plane was going to set on fire’ but I had to be calm because my son was there.

“When we did land there were six fire engines on the runway and my son said he saw them spray the wheels with water because they were that hot from the pilot having to break so hard.”

Jet2 organised coaches to take passengers back to Leeds Bradford afterwards.

A spokesman told Express.co.uk: “On descent towards Leeds Bradford Airport flight LS444 from Heraklion went into a holding pattern in order to assess a flap indication issue.

“The decision was taken to divert into Manchester Airport as a precautionary measure due to it having a longer runway to facilitate a smooth landing.

“The aircraft landed safely and onward transport was arranged for our customers back to Leeds. The safety of our customers is always our number one priority.”

Earlier this week, it was revealed a drunk Jet2 passenger had caused a woman to have a seizure after she panicked and screamed “We are all going to die” when their flight circled East Midlands Airport.

Earwig’s wing inspires compact designs that fold themselves https://briefnews.eu/earwigs-wing-inspires-compact-designs-that-fold-themselves/ https://briefnews.eu/earwigs-wing-inspires-compact-designs-that-fold-themselves/#respond Fri, 23 Mar 2018 15:26:50 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/earwigs-wing-inspires-compact-designs-that-fold-themselves/

Enlarge (credit: Dr. Jakob Faber, ETH Zürich)

I have to admit that even as someone who’s fascinated by most insects, the earwig freaks me out. Upon seeing one, I’m typically too busy trying to squash it to notice any details about its anatomy. So it was a bit of a surprise to find out that not only do they have wings, but their wings are world record holders in a specific aspect of insect winginess: they take up the least space when folded compared to their extended size. The ratio between these states can reach as high as 18-to-one.

With that fact in mind, I was less surprised to find out that researchers have decided to study this bit of biology to see if they can derive any insights from what evolution has done with the earwig. In today’s issue of Science, there’s a report on what’s been learned by three researchers: Jakob Faber and André Studart of ETH Zurich and Andres Arrieta of Purdue University. They find that, to mimic the earwig’s wing, an origami-style folding approach won’t do. Instead, they’ve designed and 3D-printed a selection of meta-stable designs which, with a small input of energy, rapidly flip between folded and unfolded states.

When many people, including most materials scientists, think of folding, their first thought is origami. But the research team found that the earwig’s ” exquisite natural folding system” behaves in a way that “cannot be sufficiently described by current origami models.” Part of the issue is one of materials science: there are certain folding patterns in the wing that just can’t be done by creating a crease in a single material or using the straight lines of origami. In addition, the wing is bi-stable, holding itself in place during flight with minimal input from muscles and folding up entirely without any muscular energy being expended.

UK building £700k prison wing in Nigeria to return criminals to their country https://briefnews.eu/uk-building-700k-prison-wing-in-nigeria-to-return-criminals-to-their-country/ https://briefnews.eu/uk-building-700k-prison-wing-in-nigeria-to-return-criminals-to-their-country/#respond Thu, 08 Mar 2018 13:43:07 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/uk-building-700k-prison-wing-in-nigeria-to-return-criminals-to-their-country/

The UK is to build a new wing at Kiri Kiri prison in Nigeria in a bid to relieve the packed detention systems at home and in the African country. The new 112-bed wing will cost the UK £700,000 ($ 972,000).

According to a statement released by Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on Wednesday, the new wing will be built as part of a compulsory prisoner transfer agreement. The UK and Nigeria reached the deal in 2014.

“As part of this agreement, eligible prisoners serving criminal sentences in Nigeria and the UK can be returned to complete their sentences in their respective countries,” Johnson said.

Nigeria’s prisons, some of which were built up to 100 years ago by British colonists, are severely overcrowded. The government said last month that the prison in the southern city of Port Harcourt had 5,000 inmates, despite having a capacity of less than 800. It said some 3,700 prisoners had been awaiting trial for more than five years.

Serious concerns have also been raised about UK prisons following reports of overcrowding, rising suicide rates, and growing problems with drug trafficking and other crimes.

It is thought that the new prison facility in Kiri Kiri could help relieve prison systems both in the UK and Nigeria. “The government believes that wherever possible foreign nationals should serve their sentences in their own country,” a Foreign Office spokesperson told Sky News.

“Helping Nigeria to improve its prison conditions and increase prison capacity will enable us to transfer more prisoners to Nigeria, which will in turn free up prison places in the UK.”

According to Ministry of Justice figures, Nigerians accounted for 320 prisoners in British jails at the end of 2016, representing three percent of the foreign-prisoner population.

Poor conditions in Nigeria are understood to have been a legal obstacle in the past for nationals being sent to serve sentences in their home country.

KFC is selling a chicken wing box that doubles as a drone https://briefnews.eu/kfc-is-selling-a-chicken-wing-box-that-doubles-as-a-drone/ https://briefnews.eu/kfc-is-selling-a-chicken-wing-box-that-doubles-as-a-drone/#respond Wed, 24 Jan 2018 07:05:13 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kfc-is-selling-a-chicken-wing-box-that-doubles-as-a-drone/

Oh, KFC. For every bizarre stunt you pull off, like chicken-flavored nail polish or a nightmarish VR work training experience, you tease us with useful combo meal tchotchkes like a phone-charging takeout box. Unfortunately, ‘tease’ is the word, since the company’s flashy giveaways typically happen outside the US, like when its Canadian stores briefly sold chicken buckets for bitcoin. KFC’s latest stunt is no different: Its Indian locations are selling a chicken wings box that doubles as a drone for a brief couple days this week.

It appears that everything you need to fly this UAV is in — and also, part of — the box. Just punch out parts and follow the instructions available online, then download the app to control your junk food-themed aircraft. The ‘KFO’ drone is a typical quadcopter, though it will probably always carry the distinct aroma of fast food chicken. Keep in mind that it only comes in particular orders of Smoky Grilled Wings and can only be bought on January 25th and 26th, so pick one up and fly it for those of us in less KFC-lucky parts of the world, Indian readers.

Since the KFO website is a little wonky, these are the KFC locations it lists that should have drones:

  • Bangalore: Central Mall, Hypercity & Signature Mall
  • Gurgaeon: Ambience Mall
  • Delhi: CP2
  • Chennai: Forum Vijaya Mall
  • Hyderabad: Gachibowli
  • Mumbai: Powai
  • Kolkata: Park Street
  • Chandigarh: Elante Mall
  • Pune: Amanora Mall
  • Kochi: Lulu Mall

Ubisoft’s new AI wing melds gaming and scientific research https://briefnews.eu/ubisofts-new-ai-wing-melds-gaming-and-scientific-research/ https://briefnews.eu/ubisofts-new-ai-wing-melds-gaming-and-scientific-research/#respond Mon, 25 Dec 2017 03:55:10 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ubisofts-new-ai-wing-melds-gaming-and-scientific-research/

Game developers were researching AI well before it became a tech industry trend, but they haven’t had much incentive to share their work with the academic world. It’s a competitive advantage, after all. Ubisoft, however, is trying to find a happy middle ground. It recently established an AI research wing, La Forge, that aims to harmonize research for both gaming and science. The new unit has academics and Ubisoft employees working together on projects that will ideally advance gaming and lead to real-world breakthroughs that scientists can publish.

As an example, Ubisoft points to its work on creating a small-scale version of the San Francisco Bay Area for Watch Dogs 2. The company developed AI-guided cars and pedestrians to navigate a realistic urban environment, and that’s potentially ideal for self-driving car research — scientists could use Watch Dogs‘ technology to test autonomous driving in tricky situations (such as crowds) without having to put real cars on the road. At the same time, AI designed for real cars could lead to better in-game AI.

Other work includes AI that walks and moves more realistically (helpful for robots and prosthetics) and detecting toxic behavior in online communities.

La Forge is still young, so it’s hard to know whether or not it’ll keep both sides interested. If Ubisoft keeps its juicier AI breakthroughs to itself, academics might lose interest. Likewise, Ubi may jump ship if research teams don’t produce enough relevant breakthroughs. If it pans out, however, this could be key to ending some of the isolation in AI development.

Omarosa Manigault reportedly told Congressional Black Caucus members they couldn’t ‘demand f—— privacy’ in the West Wing after a meeting https://briefnews.eu/omarosa-manigault-reportedly-told-congressional-black-caucus-members-they-couldnt-demand-f-privacy-in-the-west-wing-after-a-meeting/ https://briefnews.eu/omarosa-manigault-reportedly-told-congressional-black-caucus-members-they-couldnt-demand-f-privacy-in-the-west-wing-after-a-meeting/#respond Mon, 18 Dec 2017 05:01:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/omarosa-manigault-reportedly-told-congressional-black-caucus-members-they-couldnt-demand-f-privacy-in-the-west-wing-after-a-meeting/ omarosaDrew Angerer/Getty Images

  • President Donald Trump’s former adviser and close confidant, Omarosa Manigault Newman, sparked several workplace controversies before her dramatic departure from the White House this week.
  • In one instance, Newman reportedly lashed out at prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus following a March meeting, when they requested privacy in the West Wing to discuss what they would tell reporters.
  • “You don’t get to come into our house and demand to have f—— privacy,” Newman reportedly said.
  • The account was disputed by a source close to Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the CBC.

It’s no secret that Omarosa Manigault Newman’s departure from the White House was fraught with controversy.

Chief of staff John Kelly reportedly fired Newman earlier this week because she “acted very vulgar and cursed a lot and said she helped elect President Trump,” according to Urban Radio Networks’ April D. Ryan. After being fired, Newman is said to have walked to the president’s residence and “tried to get in.” Secret Service then reportedly had to escort her off the grounds.

On Friday, an ABC News report suggested that Newman’s entire tenure at the White House was filled with similarly tense encounters.

In March, Newman met with prominent members of the Congressional Black Caucus after they had a highly-publicized meeting with Trump. Newman had arranged the meeting in her role as communications director for the Office of Public Liaison.

After the meeting, members of the caucus asked to be left alone in the lobby of the West Wing to discuss what they would tell reporters waiting outside, ABC News said.

Newman reportedly told the lawmakers, “You don’t get to come into our house and demand to have f—— privacy.” A source told ABC News that a member of the White House staff tried to convince Newman to give the lawmakers privacy, but she would not walk away.

That account was somewhat disputed by a source close to Democratic Louisiana Rep. Cedric Richmond, the chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. The person told ABC News that Newman didn’t overstep any boundaries and was defending a White House staffer.

“She was within her right to do that because a CBC person was being a bit rude,” they said.

Before her departure, Newman had come under some media scrutiny because her position in the White House was vague and undefined, which frustrated some of her colleagues. Kelly, who became chief of staff last summer, is said to have made it a key focus to determine the exact roles and responsibilities of main West Wing staffers like senior adviser Jared Kushner and former chief strategist Steve Bannon.

Following her dismissal, Newman said that the White House’s “lack of diversity” made her feel “very lonely.”
