Two women were lucky to escape with only minor injuries after a massive sheet of plywood sliced through their car’s windshield as they drove along a Canadian highway.

The freak accident took place during evening rush hour on Highway 410 in Brampton, in the Greater Toronto area, on Wednesday.

The CBC news outlet identified the motorist as Jaspreet Sran, who was traveling with her friend when disaster nearly struck.

According to Ontario Provincial Police, the plywood was not secured while being transported in the trailer of another vehicle. It became a lethal airborne projectile and cleaved right through Sran’s windshield.

“I started shivering,” Sran said, recounting the incident. “I realized, ‘Oh my God,’ this thing has happened.” The two women were taken to the hospital but suffered only minor cuts and bruises.

“Thanks to God, we are alive,” Sran added.

The driver did not stop at the scene and investigators are now working to track them down. Police said it’s not yet clear if they knew the timber sheet wood flew off their trailer at the time of the accident.

“When the call came in that there was a vehicle blocking a live lane that had a piece of wood that had gone through the windshield, you think the worst,” said Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of Ontario Provincial Police. “This could have been so much worse.”

  • Surveillance video captured a fiery SUV crash in Florida that launched a driver out of the windshield of the vehicle.

It happened on June 3 in Osceola County, Florida. The video shows a white Cadillac SUV slamming into a barrier at a toll booth at what appears to be a high rate of speed. The driver launches through the windshield, hits the concrete, and slides several feet from the wreckage, as the SUV goes airborne and flames spray out from beneath it.

Though no longer a part of the Italdesign company, the Giugiaro family of designers are still creating cars at their new studio GFG Style. The latest car from the group is called the Sibylla, and it was designed for a Chinese energy company called Envision that builds wind turbines and creates energy management systems. Though the combination is unusual, the car is awesome.

We should explain the name before going much further, though. According to GFG, the name comes from a mythical Latin character that could provide answers and predict the future. This is evident in the car, because it features Envision’s operating system for managing electricity. The idea is that this car would be able to act as a battery either storing or providing electricity to nearby buildings as needed. The name was also chosen because Giorgetto Giugiaro‘s mother, Maria Sibilla, shared the name.

It may not be a name that rolls off the tongue, but that hardly matters because the car is gorgeous. It has a space-age round canopy unhindered by pillars, accentuated by a low, wedge-like nose. Because of the large one-piece windshield, GFG had to devise an unusual way to climb in. The whole glass dome slides forward when the front doors are opened. Based on GFG’s description, it seems that the occupants can keep the windshield in a slightly forward position, too, if a targa-style experience is desired. The rear doors have a flashy opening system, as well, this time in the form of a gull-wing design. Inside, there are just four seats. The front passengers have access to an expansive infotainment display filling the arched dashboard. The driver gets an airplane-style steering wheel with touch pads. The rear passengers have fully reclining seats and individual infotainment systems.

Only one part of the car is a bit predictable, and it’s the powertrain. It uses two electric motors, one in the front and one in the back for all-wheel-drive. Exact specs weren’t revealed, but in describing the electrical networking capability, there is reference to a hypothetical 75kWh battery. If it used such a battery, it would probably have a similar range to the entry-level Tesla Model S 75D, which can go about 260 miles on a charge.

The Sibyla will be on display at this year’s Geneva Motor Show. We don’t expect it to become a production car, but we wouldn’t mind if it did.

Our long-term Jaguar F-Pace is stuffed full of options. It’s the top-trim S model with the most powerful engine, and we selected five of seven available option packages. The two we didn’t pick were the cheapest ones. There were a handful of individual options we selected, as well, and one of them, the heated windshield, is one that you should definitely think twice about before choosing. The reason being that, in this editor’s opinion, it’s thoroughly irritating.

I actually didn’t even know our F-Pace had it the first time I signed it out for an evening. At the end of the day, I grabbed the key, walked down to the parking lot and drove it away without a second thought. A couple miles down Woodward Avenue, though, I noticed that my view out wasn’t quite as clear as I expected. I figured the windshield was dusty or something, so on went the windshield washer for a few moments. After everything dried off, I had the same issue. I pulled the washer lever again and still nothing. I leaned forward and squinted my eyes, and that’s when I spotted the minuscule heater wires across the entire pane of glass.

And once I saw the wires, it was almost impossible to unsee them. My unobstructed view out the car suddenly turned into a CRT screen full of scan lines. They never kept me from safely driving the F-Pace (after all, they are extremely small), but I could never completely forget they were there. It’s incredibly frustrating and it gets worse at night as the wires combine with oncoming headlights. I’m not the only one who dislikes them either, as Senior Editor John Snyder and Contributing Editor James Riswick voiced their displeasure with the feature.

Not everyone in the office feels this way about the heated windshield, though. Associate Editor Reese Counts said that they don’t bother him one bit. And in cold weather climates like Michigan, it should be handy for clearing snow, ice and condensation from the windshield. With these differing opinions, then, this is an option that you’ll definitely want to experience for yourself before actually choosing it. You might find it unobtrusive or you might find it insufferable.

As for me, I don’t think I could deal with having those wires in my face all year ’round. I would rather spend 10 percent of the year when we have accumulating snow and ice scraping it off manually so that the other 90 percent of the year I have a crystal clear view of the road.

It’s like something out of Mythbusters.

Karmen Ayres of Vancouver, Wash., returned to her car after work and noticed her windshield was broken. “Saw my window and instantly thought something had fell from the sky,” she says. A closer look revealed a can of hairspray protruding from the glass, according to a report from KCBD.

It was about 90 degrees that day, and the heat inside her car had caused a can of hairspray in the back seat to explode. It popped with enough force to launch toward the front of the car, smashing the windshield and lodging itself there.

Most aerosol cans have temperature warnings, reminding users not to store them at temperatures above 120 degrees. A closed vehicle can heat up quickly, even on a relatively mild day, and that heat can exceed the temperatures aerosol cans can withstand. The resulting pressure can cause them to burst.

Luckily it didn’t travel farther, and nobody was in the car when the can blew. “You saw the damage it did to the window,” says Portland Fire Lt. Rich Chatman, “so that could do a lot of a damage if it were to strike somebody.”

Ayres is an insurance salesperson, according to KGW, and has heard of other items exploding in hot cars such as pop cans, wine bottles, and even loaded guns. Now she has her own story to tell.

A 30lb turkey met its maker after it smashed through an SUV in northern Indiana, lodging itself in the windshield.

The dramatic incident happened as a family visiting La Porte County from New Jersey were making their way back to O’Hare International Airport in a rental car.

The large bird caught the family unaware as it flew into their path and crashed into the vehicle’s windshield.

The tom turkey was killed on impact while the family only received minor cuts from the shattered glass, according to La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, who published images from the scene to their Facebook page showing the wild turkey lodged in the glass.

Police are warning drivers that, as it’s mating season for wild turkeys, they’re “often on the move” and can be as hazardous as deer, although they admit such an incident is rare.

“I’ve been a policeman for 31 years and I’ve never seen something like that,” one officer told IndyStar.

A similar turkey smash took place in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, in recent days – this time the target was a library window. The turkey was killed in the event.

Last week the New Hampshire Fish & Game Department also reported a crash involving an 18lb turkey and a lorry.
