Two-time Oscar winner Olivia de Havilland, one of the last remaining stars from Hollywood’s golden age, died Sunday. She was 104.

The news came from the actress’ publicist, Lisa Goldberg, who announced her death of natural causes at her home in Paris, where she lived for more than 60 years.

de Havilland’s Oscar wins were for 1946’s To Each His Own, where she played an unwed mother forced to give up her child, and 1949’s The Heiress, where she starred as a woman who falls for a handsome beau against the wishes of her emotionally abusive father. Across her career, she held a total of five Oscar nominations.

Of course, one of her most notable roles was Melanie Hamilton, Scarlett O’Hara’s sister-in-law, in Gone With the Wind, which earned de Havilland her first Oscar nod in the Best Supporting Actress category; she ultimately lost to her fellow cast member Hattie McDaniel.

On the TV side of things, de Havilland appeared in the occasional TV-movie during the ’80s, including Murder Is Easy and The Royal Romance of Charles and Diana. She also held roles in several miniseries such as Roots: The Next Generations and the second installment of the North and South miniseries trilogy. Her last credit was the 1988 TV-movie The Woman He Loved.

In addition, de Havilland was portrayed by Oscar winner Catherine Zeta-Jones in the first season of FX’s Feud, which focused on the rivalry between Hollywood icons Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. At the time, de Havilland was displeased with the show’s portrayal of her and filed a lawsuit against the show, which was ultimately dismissed by a California appeals court and the U.S. Supreme Court.

de Havilland was also the older sister and occasional rival of fellow Academy Award winner Joan Fontaine. Until her death, de Havilland had been the oldest surviving Oscar-winning actor.

HBO Max has removed the classic film Gone With the Wind from its movie library following a number of calls to do so, in light of the ongoing global protests for racial equality.

ScreenRant first reported the news, and a search of the HBO Max archives confirms that the movie is no longer available to stream. The film, released in 1939, won ten Oscars and became one of the top-earning movies of all time, and was prominently featured in HBO Max’s initial advertising push. But its romantic depiction of Civil War-era America and whitewashing of slavery is seen as problematic by many modern-day viewers, especially in light of the current social unrest regarding racism and police violence. (HBO Max has not officially commented on the reasoning behind the move.)

Oscar-winning screenwriter John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) called for Gone With the Wind to be removed from HBO Max for the time being in a Los Angeles Times op-ed published this week, calling it “a film that, when it is not ignoring the horrors of slavery, pauses only to perpetuate some of the most painful stereotypes of people of color.” Others joined Ridley online in asking that the movie be shelved.

HBO Max is not the only network changing its programming in light of the public outcry surrounding the protests: Paramount Network officially cancelled the police docuseries Cops after a more than three-decade run, and A&E Network has pulled new episodes of Live PD. HBO Max has also removed all guns from its new Looney Tunes Cartoons series, apparently in response to U.S. gun violence.

In November, a Danish asset management group called Momentum Gruppen recommissioned five turbines at a 20-year-old offshore wind farm located 4km (2.5 mi) off the coast of Sweden. Momentum purchased the wind farm and upgraded the nacelles, blades, and control systems while leaving the towers, foundations, and transmission equipment. The turbines were originally rated to produce 500 kilowatts (kW) apiece. The upgrades were done with 600 kW turbine replacement equipment.

According to GreenTechMedia, it’s the first such repowering of an old offshore wind farm. As Europe’s first offshore turbines age, it represents a possible long-term future for Europe’s clean-energy fleet. Although onshore wind farm owners have been repowering their equipment for years, offshore repowering comes with its own technical challenges.

In 2017, Dong Energy dismantled the first-ever modern offshore wind farm, built in 1991 off the coast of Denmark. It had been in operation for 25 years. (One turbine was preserved for display at the Danish Museum of Energy.)

For the first time, humans can hear the sound of wind on Mars thanks to a new NASA spacecraft that touched down on the Red Planet ten days ago.

NASA’s new tool – the Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport – aka ‘InSight’ touched down on Mars on November 26.

On December 1, InSight sensors captured a haunting low rumble caused by vibrations from the wind, estimated to be blowing between 10 to 15 mph (16 to 24 kph). The winds were consistent with the direction of dust devil streaks in the landing area, which were observed from orbit, NASA reports.

What’s even more exciting about InSight’s fascinating discovery is that the NASA team were not even planning on capturing the previously unheard wind.

“Capturing this audio was an unplanned treat,” said InSight principal investigator, Bruce Banerdt. “But one of the things our mission is dedicated to is measuring motion on Mars, and naturally that includes motion caused by sound waves.”

The wind vibrations were detected by two sensitive sensors on the InSight spacecraft: an air pressure sensor inside the lander and a seismometer sitting on the lander’s deck.

InSight will act as a giant ear on Mars that will measure any sound or pressure fluctuations of the wind, earthquakes, tectonic movement or volcanism. However NASA promise an even clearer sound of the Red Planet is coming with the Mars 2020 rover that will have two microphones on board.

The rover will, for the first time, record the sound of its own landing. It will also record the sound of the instrument’s laser as it zaps different materials, helping to identify the material based on the sound it makes.
