From 2005 to 2020, Bob Iger ruled over the Walt Disney Company from his throne in Burbank, CA. Just like others monarchs throughout history, he expanded his borders during his reign by acquiring the surrounding kingdoms of Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and 21st Century Fox. He also rescued Disney’s first star, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, from a rival kingdom (NBCUniversal), revitalized the company’s theme parks around the world, and refocused their approach to streaming through services like Disney+ and Hulu. And though some of his loyal subjects may have had their fair share of valid criticisms over the course of his reign, Iger was largely a benevolent ruler due to his longtime philanthropy and the positive impact that he and his company made on their worldwide audience.

In a classic case of “game recognizes game,” the late Queen Elizabeth II decided to award Iger by bestowing upon him the title of Honorary Knight of the Order of the British Empire. Approving the award prior to her death earlier this month, the official citation declared that the former Disney Chairman and CEO is being recognized for his contributions to U.K./U.S. relations. This title of KBE is the second-highest rank in the Order that can be given to a non-U.K. citizen.

However, Iger wasn’t the only legendary name from receiving the honor this year.

In addition to Bob Iger, legendary composer and conductor John Williams is also receiving the title of Honorary Knight of the Order of the British Empire this year “for services to film music.” Williams is widely regarded as one of the most influential film composers of all time. Over the course of his illustrious career, he has been nominated for 52 Academy Awards, 6 Emmys, 25 Golden Globes, and 71 Grammys. But more importantly, he’s responsible for creating the unforgettable music behind “Jurassic Park,” the Indiana Jones franchise, “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” the Star Wars franchise, and many, many fan favorite films.

The Round Table

Both Iger and Williams join a venerable list of influential people being honored by the British crown this year. Other recipients include Costa Rican diplomat and international climate leader Christiania Figueres, Honorary Consul for Greater Philadelphia Oliver Franklin, chef and author Ken Hom, and US Congressman George Holding, as well as a number of medical professionals, scholars, teachers, designers, and more.

In a statement from Iger (via The Wrap), he shared how special this award is to him and how it is “one of the great honors of my life to have the honorary Knight of the British Empire conferred on me by [the Queen] before she passed.” Iger continued:

“Our two nations share a strong bond, which I have seen up close over many years through my deep personal and professional connections to the United Kingdom. I have great affection for the people of the UK, and have always appreciated and been inspired by their extraordinary contributions, particularly in the creative arts.”

There’s currently no word on if Iger was inspired enough to suggest a change to the Disney Legend Award to include some kind of knightly title, but we’ll be sure to update you as the story develops. In the meantime (and in all sincerity), congratulations are an order for Bob Iger, John Williams, and the rest of those being knighted this year.

Oscar Isaac is swapping onscreen wives: Jessica Chastain will now star opposite Isaac in HBO’s adaptation of Scenes From a Marriage, replacing the previously announced Michelle Williams, according to our sister site Deadline. Based on the Ingmar Bergman classic, HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage will star Chastain and Isaac as a modern American couple in an adaptation that brings a fresh perspective to the original’s “depiction of love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce.” Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson starred in the 1973 original directed by Bergman, which began as a Swedish TV miniseries and was later edited down for theatrical release.

Hagai Levi (The Affair, In Treatment) will write and direct the HBO series and serve as an executive producer. Chastain and Isaac will serve as EPs as well.

Chastain is best known for her film work, including Zero Dark Thirty and The Help, both of which earned her Oscar nominations. She’s also set to play country music legend Tammy Wynette in the upcoming Spectrum Originals limited series George & Tammy. This project represents a reunion of sorts for Chastain and Isaac: The two played husband and wife in the 2014 crime drama A Most Violent Year.

Netflix is looking to make some heavenly music with Pharrell Williams.

The streaming service has ordered Voices of Fire, an unscripted gospel music series executive-produced by the 13-time Grammy winner. The pickup was first announced at Essence Festival on Sunday.

Voices of Fire will follow the “Happy” singer’s hometown community as it “builds one of the world’s most inspiring gospel choirs,” according to the official logline. Williams’ uncle, Bishop Ezekiel Williams, and his core team of “influential gospel leaders,” will venture out into Hampton Roads, Va., to find undiscovered talent. “With the belief that diverse backstories can give their collective voice a greater meaning, the Bishop and his team will be searching for people of all ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.”

Williams is no stranger to reality-TV. He previously was a coach on NBC’s The Voice, winning in Season 8 with singer Sawyer Fredericks. He also served as a guest judge on the Stateside version of The X Factor, as well as Project Runway All Stars.

Voices of Fire joins a growing roster of unscripted series at Netflix, including The Circle, Love Is Blind and hip-hop competition Rhythm + Flow — all of which have been renewed for additional seasons.

A Capitol Fourth is set to mark its 40th anniversary with a completely overhauled show.

In light of the coronavirus pandemic, PBS’ annual 4th of July celebration will not be held on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Instead, the special will feature pre-taped performances from iconic locations across the country, including Los Angeles, Nashville, New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. It will then conclude with a live fireworks show from the nation’s capitol.

The 90-minute broadcast (which begins at 8/7c) will be hosted by John Stamos (who returns for a fourth-consecutive year) and Vanessa Williams. Yolanda Adams, Trace Adkins, Lauren Alaina, Renée Flemming, John Fogerty, Brantley Gilbert, Mandy Gonzalez, Andy Grammer, Patti LaBelle, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Kelli O’Hara and The Temptations are scheduled to perform.

A Capitol Fourth will also pay tribute to American heroes who continue to put their lives at risk on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis. The segment will include a performance of the Oscar-nominated song “I’m Standing With You” by This Is Us star Chrissy Metz.

As far as counter-programming goes, NBC at 8 pm will air the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular. The two-hour broadcast will be hosted by Today‘s Craig Melvin and feature Black Eyed Peas, The Killers, Lady A, John Legend, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and National Youth Poet L­­aureate Amanda Gorman.

Over on CNN, Don Lemon and Dana Bash will preside over The Fourth in America, a four-hour celebration with performances by Burt Bacharach and musicians from the Berklee College of Music, Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo, Billy Ray Cyrus, Andy Grammer, Harlem Gospel Choir, Jewel, Kenny Loggins, Barry Manilow, Martina McBride, Don McLean, The O’Jays, Carlos Santana and Cindy Blackman Santana, CeCe Winans, Jesse Colin Young and Little Kids Rock, and the Broadway casts of Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations and Girl From the North Country.

The mother of Logan Williams, the 16-year-old actor whose TV credits included The Flash (as Young Barry Allen) and When Calls the Heart, has revealed the cause of his death on April 2.

Marlyse Williams told the New York Post that according to preliminary toxicology tests, her son died of a fentanyl overdose, following his three-year battle with addiction.

“His death is not going to be in vain,” Marlyse Williams told the Post, expressing her mission to raise awareness of the opioid epidemic. “He’s going to help a lot of people down the road.”

Logan Williams made a total of seven appearances on The Flash, beginning with the CW series’ pilot. He last appeared in the Season 2 premiere, when he was age 12. Soon after that, he appeared in an episode of Supernatural — all the while juggling a recurring run on Hallmark’s When Calls the Heart, where he played Miles Montgomery.

Williams’ mother said that when auditioning became “way too stressful,” that was when Logan began experimenting with drugs, beginning with marijuana; she is uncertain when it progressed to fentanyl. In recent years, she remortgaged their home to send him to treatments centers in the United States and then British Columbia.

Marlyse Williams last saw her son on March 30, when they shared dinner three days before his death. “He said to me, ‘Mom, I’m gonna get clean, I’m going to get better. And I want my new life to start,’” she remembers. “I just know the last thing we said to each other was, ‘I love you.’”

Logan Williams Dies The FlashFlash star Grant Gustin said that Williams’ passing was “devastating,” adding: “My thoughts and prayers will be with him and his family during what is I’m sure an unimaginably difficult time for them. Please keep Logan and his family in your thoughts and prayers during what has been a strange and trying time for us all. Sending love to everyone.”

John Wesley Shipp, who played Williams’ dad in the flashbacks, likewise was “heartsick” to hear the tragic news, saying, “[Logan] was 100 percent committed to playing young Barry Allen, and we missed him once we moved past that part of the story.”

Phoebe Waller-Bridge‘s global takeover continued in earnest late Saturday, with the Brit auteur’s tragicomic Amazon series Fleabag dominating the 2019 Television Critics Association Awards with three trophies, including best comedy series, best comedic performer (for Waller-Bridge) and the coveted Program of the Year. Waller-Bridge, who in addition to being Fleabag‘s titular star also is the show’s creator/writer/EP, was on hand for the non-televised ceremony, which was hosted by Desus & Mero. (Could a Fleabag Emmy sweep be next?)

Waller-Bridge has previously stated that Fleabag‘s now-TCA award winning second season would serve as the series’ swan song. However, Amazon boss Jennifer Salke last week left the door slightly ajar for a Season 3, telling reporters, “Nothing would make us happier than to have her bring another season of that show [to us], or anything else she wants to do. I mean, I’m forever the optimist, so I remain always hopeful until it’s really over.”

Other noteworthy TCA winners included AMC’s Better Call Saul (best drama series), Michelle Williams (best dramatic performer for FX’s limited series Fosse/Verdon), Netflix’s Russian Doll (best new program), Chernobyl (best limited series or movie), HBO’s Michael Jackson exposé Leaving Neverland (best news/information program) and Netflix’s Queer Eye (best reality show).

On the legacy awards front, HBO’s Deadwood received the annual Heritage Award, in “recognition of the groundbreaking series’ rich characters, authentic landscape, engaging stories, and painstaking attention to detail — blending fact and fiction to craft a unique viewing experience that completely redefined the Western genre for a modern audience.” Deadwood creator David Milch, meanwhile, was honored with the TCA’s Career Achievement Award.

All told, Amazon and HBO were the top winners with three awards apiece, followed by two wins for Netflix.

Danny Williams is a 21-year-old model from Hull and the latest Love Island 2019 cast member.

Love Island fans will witness his arrival in the villa in Sunday night’s episode.

ITV’s newest reality star promises fans he’ll be an “entertaining islander” as he hopes to catch the eyes of one of the six girls.

Danny says in his pre-entrance interview: “I’ll be an entertaining Islander. I’ll be a good friend to people before I fall in love with anybody.

“I think that is one of my best qualities, I’ll be a good friend, someone people can trust.

“I’ve always got peoples’ back and that’s what I pride myself on. In terms of being a Love Islander and trying to find love, I’ll be funny, probably a bit cheeky but I do like to have a laugh.”

THE EPISODE | “Where Am I Going?” (May 7, 2019)

THE PERFORMANCE | Fosse/Verdon‘s Gwen Verdon is as great an actress off-stage as she is on it, putting on a brave face and an unshakeable smile no matter what life throws at her. This week, though, she finally reached her breaking point, and Williams — who’s been stellar all season long — topped herself with a heartbreaking, emotionally raw performance.

Gwen had a lot on her mind as she joined her ex Bob for a weekend in the Hamptons: Her best friend Joan had just died, Bob was showing off a new (and much younger) girlfriend, and Gwen was still clinging to the dream of doing Chicago with Bob in their favorite old theater. At first, Gwen was all smiles, but Williams let us see the pain and desperation peeking out around the edges. Once Gwen got a few drinks in her, she pitched her vision for Chicago a little too loudly, and it was almost hard to watch how nakedly needy she was to get Bob to say yes. When Bob finally said no, the claws came out, and Williams was absolutely vicious as Gwen detailed to Bob’s new girlfriend exactly what kind of disappointment she can expect from her new man.

When a devastated Gwen later sang a sad ballad, Williams’ voice was strong, but also laced with vulnerability. And she even found time for a chilling coda, with Gwen admitting a harsh truth: that she values the acting roles Bob gave her just as much as the daughter he gave her. Gwen Verdon is too complex a character to pin down as just one thing, you see — and Williams has masterfully shown us every last shade.

THE SHOW | Lucifer

THE EPISODE | “Somebody’s Been Reading Dante’s Inferno” (May 8, 2019)

THE PERFORMANCE | Although the big question going into Season 4 was about Chloe’s reaction to Lucifer’s true face, little did we suspect that the more powerful material would be born of the finer details — namely, the realization that she is and has been the mighty Devil’s kryptonite.

Yes, Episode 2 gave German a chance to play Chloe’s general curiosity — peppering Lucifer with Qs such as, “Do you keep track [of your kills]? What’s it like in Hell? All those people you tortured, did you enjoy it?” But when he accidentally pricked his finger shortly after surviving an inferno, something raised the detective’s hackles.

“How is it that you walk away from a giant, fiery explosion without a scratch, and right now you are bleeding?!” she asked, German’s face registering both confusion and almost a fear of hearing the answer. Chloe then recalled the times Lucifer had been shot, once by her, yet sustained damage. “Is anything even real with you? Were you trying to make me feel bad? Is this all to make me care about you more?” Then, “How is it that sometimes you get hurt and other times you don’t? What is the difference?”

When Lucifer revealed, “I’m only vulnerable when close to you,” the expression on German’s face conveyed the weight of that connection clicking with Chloe.

Capping German’s performance was an equally intense sequence where a bad guy’s hatchet just barely missed her partner. “If I pushed this, into your chest, it would kill you? Because I’m close to you?” she observed while grazing Luci with the blade. “But you jumped in front of it anyway?” Lucifer avowed he would do so, again and again, while Chloe apologized for so much as nicking him. “I’m sorry,” she whispered — for the drawn blood but also her post-finale behaviors to date.

Nikolaj Coster-WaldauHONORABLE MENTION | Game of Thrones‘ Jaime Lannister hit a pothole on his road to redemption this week — but Nikolaj Coster-Waldau played the scene so wonderfully, we almost forgave his character for abandoning Brienne in the middle of the night. (Almost.) Upon learning that Daenerys & Co. planned to battle Cersei, Jaime chose to flee Winterfell and return to his sister in King’s Landing. “You think I’m a good man?” Jaime bitterly asked a tearful Brienne, before reminding her of the heinous acts he’s committed on Cersei’s behalf. With every syllable that left Coster-Waldau’s mouth, he communicated Jaime’s regret, determination, self-loathing and sadness; there was so much conflict in his voice that even Jaime seemed unsure if he was making the right decision. And though it pained us to see Jaime ride off into the night, Coster-Waldau succeeded in bringing even more complexity to a fascinating character.

HONORABLE MENTION | For nearly 12 seasons on The Big Bang Theory, we’ve watched Leonard’s ice queen of a mother Beverly Hofstadter (the inimitable Christine Baranski) turn a cold shoulder to her son. And for nearly 12 seasons, we’ve watched as Leonard mostly tolerated her maternal indifference. But in this week’s episode — not coincidentally the third-to-last Big Bang ever — all of that pent up pain boiled over, and portrayer Johnny Galecki simply crushed every comedic and dramatic beat of Leonard’s emotional catharsis. When in the episode’s closing minutes Bev extended an olive branch to her son in the form of a genuine hug, Galecki literally rose to the occasion as Leonard sprang to his feet and wrapped his arms around his mother for what felt like the first time. It was the closure he — and more importantly we — needed.

Cloak & Dagger RecapHONORABLE MENTION | Thursday’s episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger practically served as a second origin story for Tandy Bowen, who began the hour as a powerless prisoner and finished it a fully-empowered beacon of hope — no matter how many walls she had to literally knock down to get there. From Tandy’s heartbreaking interactions with her fellow captives to her desperate attempts to claw her way out from the darkness, Olivia Holt‘s powerful performance further solidified her as one of the MCU’s shining stars. In the end, there was something so satisfying about watching Holt unleash her rage on the motel, taking down any man foolish enough to stand in her way. Come on, a trained ballerina who weaponizes the power of hope to cut down her patriarchal oppressors? It doesn’t get much more badass than that.
