Prime Video’s new sci-fi series The Peripheral is based on William Gibson’s novel.

A young woman struggling to hold it together in small-town America finds herself witness to what may or may not be a murder in the first teaser for The Peripheral, a new Prime Video series based on William Gibson’s 2014 novel of the same name.

(Spoilers for the novel below.)

The novel is in many ways vintage Gibson: a bleak, dystopian future world chock-full of big thematic ideas, visionary technology, and its own slang terminology. The reader is plunged into this setting and must acclimate accordingly; Gibson isn’t interested in presenting everything to us on a silver platter. But that initial effort pays off as the novel evolves into an action-packed cyberpunk thriller.

William Blinn, Starsky & Hutch and Eight Is Enough Creator, Dead at 83 https://briefnews.eu/william-blinn-starsky-hutch-and-eight-is-enough-creator-dead-at-83/ https://briefnews.eu/william-blinn-starsky-hutch-and-eight-is-enough-creator-dead-at-83/#respond Sat, 24 Oct 2020 18:42:33 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/william-blinn-starsky-hutch-and-eight-is-enough-creator-dead-at-83/

Emmy Award winner and Starsky & Hutch creator William Blinn has died at the age of 83.

Blinn passed from natural causes on Thursday at an assisted living community in Burbank, Calif., his daughter, Anneliese Johnson, told The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to Starsky, which ran for four seasons and produced a total of 93 episodes, Blinn developed Eight Is Enough, Hunter, The Interns, The Rookies and The MacKenzies of Paradise Cove. He also lent his writing chops to critically acclaimed projects like Roots, Fame and Brian’s Song. He was nominated for five Emmys throughout his career, winning for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for Brian’s Song in 1972 (which also earned him a Peabody Award), and again for his work adapting Roots in 1977.

He served as a co-writer on Purple Rain, the musical drama starring the global superstar Prince. Blinn met the singer before accepting the job, and wondered how he could pull off a screenplay about a young, flamboyant leader of a Minneapolis band called The Revolution. That is, until Prince took him for a drive and played him “When Doves Cry,” a song the musician had specifically written for the movie.

“He played the song for me, and he had the speaker system from heaven,” Blinn told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in 2004. “For someone my age, I like rock music, but I don’t like a lot of it. Nevertheless, [the song] was melodic and played with great intensity. I said, ‘Man, you’ve certainly got a foundation. This can pay off at the end.’”

In addition to his aforementioned daughter, he is survived by a son, Chris, and his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Eden, Zachary and Zoe.

Marvin told William: “I became a dad in 2017 for the first time and it was the hardest time of my life. I found it really, really tough and I grew up without my father and not had a father to look up at.

“And now I’ve got a child looking up at a father and I don’t really know how I’m dealing with this and I really struggled with my emotions at the time and that’s something I wanted to ask you as well – there’s a lot of pressure for so many dads across the country.

“When you’re struggling, who do you go to?” with the prince replying: “So, I can relate to what you’re saying Marvin, having children is the biggest life-changing moment, it really is.

“I agree with you, I think when you’ve been through something traumatic and that is like you say, your dad not being around, my mother dying when I was younger, your emotions come back in leaps and bounds.”

It wasn’t the only issue Brad chose to address in his absence as he also made an apparent reference to his love-life.

“Hey Britain, heard you use became single, welcome to the club. Wishing you all the best with the divorce settlement.”

It comes just days after the UK left the EU on January 31, after the referendum was held back in June 2016.

The speech also seemed to address the rumours over his relationship with ex-wife Jennifer after being spotted looking cosy as the SAG awards last month.

Prince Harry’s friend admits there has been ‘dispute’ with William ‘it’s very hard’ https://briefnews.eu/prince-harrys-friend-admits-there-has-been-dispute-with-william-its-very-hard/ https://briefnews.eu/prince-harrys-friend-admits-there-has-been-dispute-with-william-its-very-hard/#respond Wed, 08 Jan 2020 13:25:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prince-harrys-friend-admits-there-has-been-dispute-with-william-its-very-hard/

Last October, ITV aired a documentary about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s African Journey, and while the footage gave the public an insight into the work they carried out on their road trip, it also addressed some of the difficulties the royal couple have faced in previous months. ITV News at 10 anchor Tom Bradby, who has been a friend of Prince Harry’s for many years, accompanied them on the trip and discussed the pressures of royal life with the pair.

Speaking on Good Morning Britain today, host Piers Morgan said: “It was a brilliant documentary in terms of news stuff, the main takeaway the papers took was of course, this rift with Prince William, which is clearly real, clearly ongoing.

“There’s clearly a problem there, where does that play out in the next year?”

Mr Bradby said: “There are lots of people, who would love there to be, including I think the brothers themselves, love them to be closer again.

“But we’re brothers, we’ll always be brothers, we’re certainly on different paths at the moment, but I will always be there for him as I know he will always be there for me.

“We don’t see each other as much as we used to, because we’re so busy. But, I love him dearly, and the majority of stuff is created out of nothing, but you know, as I said, as brothers, you have good days and bad days.”

As for whether or not Prince Harry and Meghan are seriously considering a permanent or semi-permanent move to Canada, Tom offered: “I don’t know the answer to that.

“It’s no big secret in their friends that they have been considering their options in the future.

Will Arrow’s Deathstroke Kill William? ‘JJ Is Willing to Do Whatever He Needs’ https://briefnews.eu/will-arrows-deathstroke-kill-william-jj-is-willing-to-do-whatever-he-needs/ https://briefnews.eu/will-arrows-deathstroke-kill-william-jj-is-willing-to-do-whatever-he-needs/#respond Sun, 27 Oct 2019 21:59:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/will-arrows-deathstroke-kill-william-jj-is-willing-to-do-whatever-he-needs/

RELATED STORIES

Arrow‘s 2040 timeline has revealed its own Deathstroke, and beneath the marauder’s mask is the face of no less than John Diggle and Lyla Michaels’ biological son, John Jr. aka JJ. How did the apple fall so far from the tree? And is JJ truly ruthless enough to slay Mia’s brother William or any other member of Future Team Arrow — stepbrother Connor (Joseph David-Jones) included?

The second episode of Arrow‘s farewell run left us with that question, as JJ aimed to “rip the heart out” of the Unification movement by targeting its members, William (Ben Lewis) included. TVLine spoke with Chicago Fire alum Charlie Barnett, who plays grown-up JJ, about what’s to come and the blood to be spilled.

TVLINE | So, JJ is stone-cold.
He’s pretty hard, you know. He’s been through a lot.

TVLINE | Were you familiar with Arrow‘s Diggle and Lyla? And if so, were you surprised to that see JJ fell so far from noble tree?
You know, I went back and watched a lot [of previous seasons]… but … from knowing life, from knowing people, no, I’m not surprised. People who grew up in homes, they sometimes feel like they missed out on something or were given a disservice, so I’m not surprised to see him turn into a complicated or “villainous” person.

TVLINE | Connor explained to Mia that his parents had been focused on him, their adopted son, and so JJ lost out.
He definitely did. Connor was adopted and came from his own complicated situation, and that kind of weight — I’m adopted myself, so I know from experience — can be really difficult, and it manifests in very different ways for each person. As a child who maybe didn’t necessarily ask for another brother or a sister but received it and was happy to have it, to see then you kind of get “forgotten” within the fold, because of the actions of this new family member…? A twisted result can come from it.

Really, we have to remember that JJ is at this point just trying to show them that there is another side to this story, as much as people are labeling him a “villain.” As Charlie the actor playing the part, I don’t see him as a villain; I see him as being given the short end of the stick. Look at Green Arrow, who is such an interesting character because he’s not a perfect hero. He’s not Superman.

JJ at his core is trying to make a voice for the people who have been dealt a sh–ty hand or had a sh–ty situation — maybe they lost someone, due to these people. He’s just trying to make that voice heard. Now, maybe he’s doing it in a bad way…. [Laughs]

TVLINE | Speaking of that, when he threatens to have William killed, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much did he mean that?
Oh, whole-heartedly 10. He’s willing to do whatever he needs. He has been pushed and he’s been pulled for many, many years in his life. In the backstory I have in my mind, he and Connor were friends, they were brothers, and they were tight. And at some point in their adulthood, JJ started to see what he had lost out on and what Connor had gained in retrospect. Look at the fact that Connor is working with his dad so closely, and JJ was never given that opportunity. It makes his blood boil just thinking about it.

the spinoff’s backdoor pilot. Are you a part of that?
Oh yeah.

TVLINE | Chicago Fire showrunner Derek Haas once told us he hoped to have you back one day. [Barnett played Peter Mills for the first three seasons of the NBC drama.] Has there been any talk of a guest spot?
Tell him to call me! [Laughs] I should give him a call. They’re doing great over there, the numbers are sticking up there.

TVLINE | Dawson and Casey are now split up, and when you left, Mills told Dawson to look him up if anything changes. Could they maybe now be together? [Monica Raymund last appeared as Dawson in this season’s premiere.]
Look, I’ve known Monica since I was 13, 12 years old, strangely enough, so she’s more like a sister to me, even though we had to make out on TV. [Laughs] I love her to death and we have joked about building our own little Chicago spinoff, where Dawson and Mills find their way to Puerto Rico and start their own firehouse down there.

TVLINE | Chicago Puerto Rico!
Chicago Puerto Rico! I would be more than happy to return. I love the show, it brought me [Arrow], everything I have. It was an incredible window in my career.

Prince William: The REAL reason Duke of Cambridge’s holidays with Prince George will alter https://briefnews.eu/prince-william-the-real-reason-duke-of-cambridges-holidays-with-prince-george-will-alter/ https://briefnews.eu/prince-william-the-real-reason-duke-of-cambridges-holidays-with-prince-george-will-alter/#respond Tue, 08 Jan 2019 13:43:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prince-william-the-real-reason-duke-of-cambridges-holidays-with-prince-george-will-alter/

Prince William’s family holidays with wife Kate and their three children are set to be shaken up. The Duke of Cambridge has often been spotted enjoying time away with Duchess Catherine and their adorable brood of Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte. The Royal couple, both 36, made their first travel memories with eldest George when he was a toddler, when they flew to Australia. George, now aged five, is third in line to the British throne, currently held by Queen Elizabeth II, and this indicates a switch up in holiday structure is in store.

George is third in the line of succession behind his grandfather, Prince Charles, and his father.

This means forthcoming trips will see him travel separately from Prince William on safety grounds.

Initially, his parents need approval from the Queen to plan a getaway.

Regulation stipulates that as both males are heirs to the throne, they cannot officially travel together.

This is because of the potential for an accident, so the pair will have to travel separately once George is aged 12, marking a major change.

The rules do offer some flexibility, such as when the young family jetted away to Australia.

Prince William’s mother, the late Princess Diana, also took William away with his father, Prince Charles, the current first in line to the monarchy.

Meanwhile, their holidays as a family of five are also required to comply with the royal budget.

The pair have to check back their holiday spending plans with the Queen, too, because she has an established travel budget.

In order to not exceed the cash flow she keeps an eye on all vacation splurges.

During festive breaks, more holiday clearance is needed.

The Cambridge’s have to get the nod from the Queen to spend some of their Christmas with Kate’s family, the Middletons.

The UK monarch has previously granted their request.

The family also make sure they spread Christmas cheer around the Queen’s estate at Sandringham, too.

It remains to be seen what the cute family’s next overseas adventure as a five will be.

Kate Middleton and Prince William once went to this terrifying place on a royal tour https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-once-went-to-this-terrifying-place-on-a-royal-tour/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-once-went-to-this-terrifying-place-on-a-royal-tour/#respond Mon, 10 Dec 2018 01:18:49 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-once-went-to-this-terrifying-place-on-a-royal-tour/

Kate Middleton and Prince William’s safety is of utter importance to the royal family.

But that didn’t stop the couple once travelling to the most dangerous airport in the world.

Paro Airport in Bhutan is tucked among the steep mountains of the Himalayas and is surrounded by sharp peaks of up to 18,000ft tall.

Only 10 pilots in the world are qualified to land at the airport in a difficult manoeuvre that involves turning sharp left to avoid the mountain and land in the valley.

Kate and William visited the remote destination on their royal tour to the region in 2016.

The royal couple were invited into the cockpit of a charter plane carrying them from Assam in India to Paro.

William admitted after the journey that he was “terrified” of the landing.

The Prince spoke to helicopter pilot Nic Suddards, 56, from Yorkshire who moved to Bhutan in December to fly their national helicopter making emergency rescues and transporting diplomats.

Nic said afterwards: “[William] said it (being in the cockpit) was terrifying.

“There is a house on the approach which is known as Mr Smith’s house and you miss it by metres.

“The pilot was showing him Mr Smith’s house and he said, ‘Don’t look at that, concentrate on the runway!’”

The airport is 1.5 miles above sea level with a runway of just 6,500 feet. This makes it one of the few runways in the world which is shorter than its elevation above sea level.

Strong winds can result in serious turbulence for planes coming into land.

They also have to weave through houses dotted across the mountainside.

Flights are only permitted during hours of daylight and the pilot is required to make his judgements by eye rather than relying on aircraft instruments.

Bhutan’s national carrier, Druk Air, and Bhutan Airlines both provide international flights into the airport.

According to the Bhutan Travel Bureau, “each flight is mesmerising and offers an exciting descent into the kingdom.”

Prince William – a helicopter pilot – missed the chance to fly out of the airport in a helicopter during his stay, Nic revealed.

He said William was “devastated,” to not fly. “He said he would have loved to have flown it,” Nic added.

On another royal tour, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, had a rather embarrassing public incident.

Kate Middleton and Prince William spend Christmas here with their children every year https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-spend-christmas-here-with-their-children-every-year/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-spend-christmas-here-with-their-children-every-year/#respond Fri, 07 Dec 2018 01:12:06 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-and-prince-william-spend-christmas-here-with-their-children-every-year/

Kate Middleton, 36, and Prince William, 36, will be enjoying Christmas with their three children Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis.

The five of them will also be joining the newest Royal Family member, Meghan Markle, 37, since marrying Prince Harry, 34.

Kate and William could choose to head to Sandringham in Norfolk, where they have years previously with the Queen.

However, rumours have suggested they may choose a different location altogether.

The couple could skip Sandringham and spend it with her brother, James Middleton in Berkshire.

He said on TV channel Leute Heut he was looking forward to a “family” Christmas where they could all “regroup”.

This could suggest Kate and William spending their Christmas with the Middleton’s this year.

However this is unlikely as the royals have spent the day at Sandringham for a number of years as tradition.

They have spent Christmas at Berkshire before; in 2012 and 2016.

They all attend church in the morning of Christmas Day, heading to St Marys Magdele in Norfolk together.

Last year was the first time the two young couples were first pictured together, in an image that quickly went viral.

Their children, however, stay at home during the morning service.

Rumours have suggested Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, could also join the family for Christmas this year.

The Royal Family have chosen Sandringham, the Queen’s estate, for years to celebrate the festive period.

The Queen is often spotted catching the train to Norfolk over the Christmas holidays to spend time at her private residence.

The Royal Family have a number of traditions over Christmas, with one of them the famous Christmas Speech by the Queen.

She also makes sure to gift her staff a Christmas pudding, as well as Christmas trees to the local schools.

They also open their presents on Christmas Eve as opposed to Christmas Day, in keeping with their German heritage.

Kate Middleton incredibly jealous when Prince William did this on royal trip without her https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-incredibly-jealous-when-prince-william-did-this-on-royal-trip-without-her/ https://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-incredibly-jealous-when-prince-william-did-this-on-royal-trip-without-her/#respond Thu, 06 Dec 2018 12:28:45 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/kate-middleton-incredibly-jealous-when-prince-william-did-this-on-royal-trip-without-her/

Kate Middleton gave birth to Prince William’s son Prince Louis, aged seven months, in April. This meant she was unable to join her husband went he went on a week-long royal private working trip to Africa in September. The Duchess of Cambridge remained in the UK with Louis, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince George, five. When William was in Namibian capital Windhoek he revealed that his wife was very jealous of him.

The reason behind Kate’s jealousy was that William would be able to enjoy several nights of good sleep on the trip.

William said in a speech at the British High Commissioner’s residence: “I’m delighted to be visiting Namibia for the first time.

“I’m only sorry that my wife Catherine is not able to join me – she is immensely jealous.

“Particularly as I’m looking forward to a few good uninterrupted nights’ sleep this week away from my wonderful children.”

The Duchess, who is considered very much a hands-on mother, returned to royal duty on at the start of October.

Kate and William also employ a nanny to look after their children. Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, was trained at the elite Norland School for nannies which teaches its students how to care for the children of the rich and famous.

As part of her training at the Bath-based elite institute, graduates are warned that any who use physical punishment will be struck off because they are taught to believe “a child is never naughty.”

Writer Louise Heren, who co-wrote a book about Norland nannies and spent a year at the college making a TV documentary, said: “They will never ever smack. They will be struck off if they do. A child is never naughty but the behaviour is.”

Heren said Borrallo would earn around £38,000-a-year as a live-in help to Kate and William’s growing brood and will have been trained not to impose strict rules.

Now Kate is back to royal duty she can return to accompanying William on royal visits.

Kate and William visited Cyprus on Wednesday to deliver gifts to UK service personnel who will be on duty over Christmas.

The royal couple made the visit without their young children, however.

As it is still during term time, Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be at school.

Prince George who is five is in Year One and three-year-old Charlotte attends Nursery.

During the trip to Cyprus, the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in what was surely a nod to her stylish sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, wide leg trousers and a tailored blazer.

She teamed them with a white silk top and a £666 recycled khaki blazer from Canadian brand Smythe.
