Sir Starmer joined McGovern on Packed Lunch to talk about the cladding crisis and plans to force a parliament vote to resolve the issue. However, talk quickly turned to homeschooling and how Starmer is coping in the third lockdown. As he revealed he tends to help his children with “easier” subjects, McGovern took the opportunity to tease the Labour leader about becoming Prime Minister but not being good at maths.

“Keir, can I ask you, we were talking on the show earlier about homeschooling and you know there’s lots of parents struggling with all of that at the minute,” McGovern began.

“I was keen to know, how is all of that going on at house? Are you managing to homeschool amongst all of this going on?”

Starmer replied: “Yeah well, my wife works in a hospital so our children are children of key workers.

“But last week we were self-isolating and therefore we were homeschooling.

“Lots and lots of parents up against it trying to work with homeschooling.”

“Which lesson are you best at?” McGovern probed.

Starmer revealed: “Well, listen when it gets to things like Maths and English I am scratching my head trying to help the children with it so I stick to the easier subjects. Maths is the one we are struggling most with.”

McGovern replied: “Just given that you mention Maths and there’s lots of figures involved in your job.

“Do you think as Prime Minister you’d be alright if you aren’t that good at Maths?”

“I didn’t say I wasn’t good at Maths, I said I wasn’t helping the kids at Maths,” Starmer hit back.

“The homeschooling is a challenge for everyone but we are doing everything we can between now and 2024 to win that General Election.

“And actually, to give people what they deserve on the back of this pandemic.

The ITV show sees fans hope to take on the Spin To Win wheel every day as one lucky viewer receives at least £500 plus the opportunity to win the infamous goodie bag, just by calling into the show. As ever with live TV, things don’t always go to plan and on today’s This Morning, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield grew frustrated after multiple viewers failed to give the correct passphrase, or pick up the phone at all.

Fans can win up to £3,000 on the game, which is free to enter, with many calling in to give them a shot at winning the cash prize.

However, the rules of the game mean when the hosts call a contestant, they must answer with the correct phrase, which is given on the This Morning app.

Today’s game saw Holly and Phil nearly give up altogether after they called six members of the public, with none of them giving them the answer they needed.

As they dialled through the numbers, it became increasingly clear the pair might have to cut off the segment, with Phil noting: “This might be our first abandonment.”

Holly jokingly asked whether the nation was still in lockdown due to the lack of response as the segment became painful viewing.

Phil remarked: “I’m losing the will to live slowly on the television,” as the duo couldn’t understand why nobody had managed to answer correctly.

“This is great telly this, the best telly ever,” added the host, with Holly asking: “Should I just practice spinning the wheel for a while?”

After call number six was unsuccessful, the pair wondered whether they should scrap today’s competition, with Phil questioning: “Should we just leave it?”

“We’re very over on time,” said the host but Holly stepped in, remarking: “Not sure that’s allowed.”

The contestant was asked: “Whose 60th birthday did we celebrate earlier on in the show?” with Reece correctly responding with “Bradley Walsh.”

This meant he also won the This Morning goodie bag, with Phil telling the player: “You’ve saved our bacon, it would’ve been the first one we’d abandoned. There’s no one left to dial, I don’t think!”

Reminding viewers of the rules ahead of tomorrow’s edition, Holly added: “Make sure you’re in and don’t say hello!”

Viewers were left baffled by the competition and called for it to end, with one writing on Twitter: “How are these people entering a TV comp where you have to pick up a phone and then they’re not ready for the ring? CRACKERS! Keep dancing Holly #ThisMorning.”

Another added: “#ThisMorning they need a new game. Spin to Win is a disaster.”

A third said: “It’s been six months since #ThisMorning brought out Spin to Win. You would have thought that people would have understood the f*****g rules by now!”

“#ThisMorning please stop the spin to win game. I feel like I’m hanging on the phone to a call centre #watchingpaintdryTV,” remarked another.

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.

Oscars 2019: Kevin Hart ‘will NOT return to host’ – here’s what’ll happen instead https://briefnews.eu/oscars-2019-kevin-hart-will-not-return-to-host-heres-whatll-happen-instead/ https://briefnews.eu/oscars-2019-kevin-hart-will-not-return-to-host-heres-whatll-happen-instead/#respond Sun, 06 Jan 2019 15:16:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/oscars-2019-kevin-hart-will-not-return-to-host-heres-whatll-happen-instead/

Hart was initially unveiled as the presenter of the iconic awards bash late last year, until a huge homophobia furore erupted – based on clips from his stand-up routines and numerous tweets with derogatory language from several years ago. He stepped down, leaving the Oscars officially host-less. But the row returned to prominence this week when he appeared on Ellen DeGeneres’ chatshow.

DeGeneres – herself a trailblazing, openly gay woman – has said she believes Hart should be given a second chance and forgiven, but this has been met with criticism online.

Hart said in the interview with her that has apologised for his past derogatory language multiple times in the past, but the likes of Variety and CNN’s Don Lemon have countered that, despite thorough investigation, there is no clear evidence of this.

It was reported that the Academy would be open to reinstating Hart as host if he indicated that he was interested – and remorseful.

But despite claims that the Academy were satisfied with Hart’s attempts to resolve the controversy, it seems he himself does not want to come back.

According to Deadline, the actor and comedian fears he would become a distraction from the actual ceremony.

And while the door is reportedly open for him to change his mind, it now seems very unlikely that Hart will be the presenter.

So what will happen instead?

The US industry publication suggests the ceremony will have multiple stars presenting awards – but no single main host.

Deadline claims that Hart did “reconsider” his involvement, but wants to end the “controversial narrative” that has plagued his hiring.

He is also said to be concerned about how much time would have to prepare if he was to be re-employed.

The 91st Academy Awards are slated to take place on February 24, 2019.

The nominations will be unveiled on Tuesday, January 22.

Netherlands ends support to Syrian militants & White Helmets since Assad ‘will soon win’ https://briefnews.eu/netherlands-ends-support-to-syrian-militants-white-helmets-since-assad-will-soon-win/ https://briefnews.eu/netherlands-ends-support-to-syrian-militants-white-helmets-since-assad-will-soon-win/#respond Mon, 10 Sep 2018 23:41:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/netherlands-ends-support-to-syrian-militants-white-helmets-since-assad-will-soon-win/ The Netherlands has decided to end its support to militants in Syria, since the program did not yield “expected” results. The move comes as journalists found one of the groups had been labeled as terrorists by the country itself.

“The opportunity to quickly change the situation [in Syria] is extremely small,” reads the letter the lower house of the parliament by Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok and Minister for Foreign Trade Sigrid Kaag, announcing the end of support programs for the militants in Syria.

The program to support of “moderate” anti-government groups in Syria was established in close cooperation with “like-minded donors who pursued the same goals as the Netherlands” and cost the country over $ 80 million (some €80 million) over the years, according to the document. It failed to “bring the expected results,” however, and is to be closed since the Syrian troops “will soon win” the war against militant groups.

Over the years, the Netherlands allocated $ 29 million (€25 million) to the so-called “non-lethal assistance” (NLA) program, $ 14.5 million (€12.5 million) were donated to the so-called White Helmets and $ 17.1 million (€14,8 million) went to the Access to Justice and Community Service (AJACS) program. The AJACS was supposedly designed to support “community police” work in Syria, specifically the so-called Free Syrian Police (FSP) group.

The support for militants is set to end immediately, yet the White Helmets will be funded until December, according to the document. Since the White Helmets now operate only in the Idlib province, which is believed to be the destination of the looming offensive by the Syrian Army and its allies, their future is quite doubtful, the document states.

The move has come amid a damning journalist investigation by the two Dutch newspapers – Nieuwsuur and Trouw. According to their report, 22 armed militant groups were subjects to receive supplies through the NLA program. The “non-lethal” goods supplied by the Dutch government included satellite phones, uniforms, assorted equipment and even the ‘iconic’ Toyota Hilux pick-up trucks, widely used by various militant groups in Syria.

At least one of the groups supplied by the Netherlands, Jabhat al-Shamiya, turned out to be labeled a terrorist group by the country’s own justice department, the journalists have revealed. One Dutch man is currently prosecuted for joining the group back in 2015, with the indictment describing it as a “salafist and jihadist” movement which can qualify only as a “criminal organization with terrorist intent.” The ultimate goal of the group is creation of a “caliphate,” according to the prosecution.

Five other militant groups that the journalists managed to identify have been also involved in human rights violations and cooperated with terrorist groups, the investigative report states. More information about the militants will be released by the two newspapers in the following days.

The extent of the Dutch support to actual terrorists in Syria might be even bigger, since the other recipients openly named in the government letter are quite controversial, to say the least.

The FSP has been operating exclusively in Syria’s province of Idlib, largely controlled by the local Al-Qaeda branch, Al-Nusra Front (now rebranded as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham). The FSP got in limelight last December, when BBC aired the Panorama program titled ‘Jihadis You Pay For.’ The program claimed that the FSP officers had to be approved by Al-Nusra henchmen to get enlisted into the “police force.”

Following the program’s broadcast the UK Foreign Office suspended funding to the FSP through the AJACS program, and ended it completely in August.

The White Helmets have likewise been repeatedly accused of closely cooperating with jihadist groups and effectively serving as their media branch. The group has advertised itself as a volunteer force and Syria’s “civil defense.” The White Helmets have been widely praised in the West and even received an Oscar for a “documentary” movie. The mounting evidence, however, suggests, that they’ve been actively participating in other sorts of “filmmaking,” namely staging chemical attacks that were blamed on the Syrian government.

Prince Philip turns 97 TODAY – will he make a public appearance? Palace announces plan https://briefnews.eu/prince-philip-turns-97-today-will-he-make-a-public-appearance-palace-announces-plan/ https://briefnews.eu/prince-philip-turns-97-today-will-he-make-a-public-appearance-palace-announces-plan/#respond Sun, 10 Jun 2018 12:06:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/prince-philip-turns-97-today-will-he-make-a-public-appearance-palace-announces-plan/

Prince Philip’s birthday is today, Saturday 10 June, and he turns 97 – but how will he celebrate?

The Duke of Edinburgh and consort to Queen Elizabeth II, 92, was absent from the Trooping the Colour ceremony yesterday held in honour of the Queen’s official birthday.

But will he make a public appearance today in honour of his turning 97? It is unlikely, according to reports.

Prince Philip retired from public service last year, and today marks his first birthday in retirement since the Queen ascended to the throne in 1952.

He will be celebrating the occasion in private, a Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed to Sky News.

Historically, Prince Philip has not been known to celebrate his birthdays, at least not in public.

Instead, he has attended official engagements as normal, regardless of whether they fall on the date of his birthday.

The Duke has kept a low profile following a hip replacement operation last April.

He is believed to spend much of his time at Windsor and at his Wood Farm cottage on the Sandringham estate.

However, he has appeared in public three times since his operation.

Philip appeared twice at the Royal Windsor Horse Show, watching the events from behind the wheel of his Landrover.

He also attended the royal wedding of Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, after concerns his recovery might not allow it.

Prince Harry’s grandfather ascended the steps of St. George’s Chapel unaided and seemingly without difficulty on the day.

Why does Queen Elizabeth’s birthday change date every year? Yesterday, Queen Elizabeth’s official birthday was marked, as is tradition, with the Trooping of the Colour parade, also known as The Queen’s Birthday Parade – where British troops take part in a pageant in honour of the monarch.

Royal fans may observe the Queen’s official birthday date for 2018 is different compared to last year.

Her birthday was celebrated on Saturday 17 June in 2017, as opposed to June 9 this year.

It is usually celebrated on the second Saturday in June each year, according to the Royal.uk website.

The choice of a weekend day means the public are more likely to be able to celebrate it.

The Queen’s official birthday was originally celebrated on the second Thursday of June, the same day her father, King George VI, chose to celebrate his.

However, in 1959 she made a decision to change her official birthday to two days later on the second Saturday of June instead.

Star Wars 9 news: Kylo Ren ‘WILL be redeemed’ – thanks to THIS character? https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-news-kylo-ren-will-be-redeemed-thanks-to-this-character/ https://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-news-kylo-ren-will-be-redeemed-thanks-to-this-character/#respond Tue, 06 Mar 2018 10:01:31 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/star-wars-9-news-kylo-ren-will-be-redeemed-thanks-to-this-character/

Warning: spoilers for Episode 8: The Last Jedi ahead.

The Junior Novelisation of Episode 8 is out now, and appears to allude to the possibility that it will be Rey who can yet stop Kylo’s evil streak.

It appeared at the end of the movie that his window for potential redemption had closed, but it’s things look much more optimistic in this book.

Extracts shared on Twitter highlight the moment in which Luke projects himself onto Crait and has a brief moment with sister Leia (Carrie Fisher).

It notes that Leia noticed “glint” in Luke’s eye, one that reminded her of his younger self – who “had found a way to redeem a man she never could – their father. If Luke couldn’t save Ben, maybe he believed someone else could.”

On Rey, it later adds: “Could the girl from Jakku somehow help them all – even Ben?”

Earlier, another passage elsewhere in the book – with Rey’s perspective – had hinted: “Kylo Ren wasn’t lost to them. Under his dark shell flickered a spark of light. He could be redeemed.”

“Their eyes met, and Rey saw in Kylo Ren the good person he wanted to be,” reads a later line.

Of course the plot of Episode 9, which is being filmed from this summer, is being kept under lock and key.

It’ll be just under two years before we get the trilogy finale – although Solo: A Star Wars Story, about Han Solo, is out this summer.

Star Wars 8: The Last Jedi, meanwhile, is out on DVD and Blu-ray next month.

HTC: Vive Pro ‘will require a better machine’ https://briefnews.eu/htc-vive-pro-will-require-a-better-machine/ https://briefnews.eu/htc-vive-pro-will-require-a-better-machine/#respond Sun, 21 Jan 2018 08:41:29 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/htc-vive-pro-will-require-a-better-machine/

This month at CES 2018 in Las Vegas, we saw the near-future of VR hardware when HTC unveiled the Vive Pro at its press conference. The 3K resolution is improved over its current model predecessor, and it also features an improved fit, embedded audio solution, and the promise of improved base station tracking sensors to arrive later this year.

Upload went hands-on with the Vive Pro at CES, as well as seeing it sitting side-by-side with the original Vive that released in 2016, and came away mostly impressed with the crisp visual display.

During the show HTC revealed that the Vive Pro will actually have the same minimum PC specifications as the current original Vive. This opens the door for current generation consumers to purchase just the Vive Pro when it releases for a marginal upgrade without having to break the bank on a whole new computer. At least, that’s the idea.

But just like any piece of cutting-edge technology though, you’re going to want to have a powerful computer to get the most out of it and the Vive Pro is no different.

“We have a minimum spec and a recommended spec, we haven’t revealed recommended yet but those are two different things,” explained J.B. McRee, a senior VR marketing manager at HTC, during an in-person interview at CES. “The minimum is the bare minimum for it to work, functionally, but just like with any VR headset or game that lets you modify graphics settings and things like that, with a higher end GPU you’re gonna get higher performance. So the recommended spec will likely shift but the minimum spec will stay the same.”

So the ultimate question is: If you’re running a minimum or near-minimum spec PC right now with an original Vive and you buy a Vive Pro, will you notice improved visuals at all?

“It’s hard to say since each piece of content has different requirements,” answered McRee. “Let’s say you have a game with three graphical settings, if you were minimum spec using the Pro then you might need to run the game on a lower overall setting because it’s higher resolution and you’re requesting more horsepower from the computer. A large bulk of the devs here at CES have gone through and optimized things to run well on the Pro. … It’s a higher performance headset, so it will require a better machine. The people that we are currently marketing this product to, the most demanding consumers and enterprise customers, are not the type of people that have a minimum spec PC and they’re not the type of people that would feel uncomfortable upgrading to a higher end GPU if that’s what’s needed to get the type of experience that they want.”

This shouldn’t come as much of a revelation to anyone, but it’s important to understand that the Pro may not be a tangible upgrade for an everyday consumer. If you want to really see the resolution difference, then you may need to push your PC a bit further than it’s being pushed currently. Until we know the recommended PC specs though, it’s hard to say what that will be exactly other than it’s going to be higher than the original Vive’s.

McRee indicated that all of the PCs running the Pro at CES were using a single Nvidia GTX 1080 or an equivalent GPU, which does serve as at least a starting indication of where to aim to get the most out of the improved visuals.

The PC Gaming channel is presented by Intel®‘s Game Dev program.

Hawaii governor promises false missile alert ‘will never happen again’ https://briefnews.eu/hawaii-governor-promises-false-missile-alert-will-never-happen-again/ https://briefnews.eu/hawaii-governor-promises-false-missile-alert-will-never-happen-again/#respond Mon, 15 Jan 2018 00:30:12 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/hawaii-governor-promises-false-missile-alert-will-never-happen-again/ David Ige CNN HawaiiCNN

  • Hawaii Governor David Ige released a statement apologizing for Saturday’s false missile alert.
  • Ige confirmed “steps have been taken” to prevent a similar alert being sent in the future.
  • The governor also said the US needs to de-escalate tensions with North Korea.

Hawaii Governor David Ige apologized for the state’s false missile alert, saying it “will never happen again.”

In a press release Sunday evening, Ige issued a lengthy apology for the “unfortunate situation” that “has never happened before and will never happen again.”

“On behalf of the State of Hawai’i, I deeply apologize for this false alert that created stress, anxiety and fear of a crisis in our residents and guests,” Ige said, also apologizing for “any hardship and inconvenience this created for you, your family and loved ones.”

Ige specifically mentioned North Korea in his statement, saying the US needs to de-escalate tensions with the country.

The governor also confirmed that “steps have been taken” by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency to prevent a similar false alert being sent in the future.

Hawaiians received a text message 0n Saturday morning warning them of an inbound ballistic missile. The alert message read: “BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.”

A follow-up alert, clarifying there was no threat, was sent out 38 minutes later. But many people were terrified during that time, and some even reached out to loved ones to say goodbye.

Ige previously had said “we definitely need to improve our procedures,” after confirming a staff member had pressed the wrong button by mistake during a shift change.

Read Ige’s message in full:

Aloha,

On Saturday, Hawai‘i’s residents and visitors experienced an unfortunate situation that has never happened before and will never happen again – a false alert issued by the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency that a ballistic missile was on its way to the Hawaiian Islands.

On behalf of the State of Hawai‘i, I deeply apologize for this false alert that created stress, anxiety and fear of a crisis in our residents and guests.

I can personally assure each and every resident and visitor that steps have already been taken by the Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency to ensure that a situation of this type never happens again.

The Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency is committed to protecting the people of Hawai‘i, and over the past year it has been taking responsible measures to prepare for the highly unlikely event of a missile attack. As a state government, we must learn from this unfortunate error and continue to prepare for any safety threat to Hawai‘i’s residents and visitors – whether it is a man-made threat or a natural disaster such as a hurricane or tsunami.

In the next few days, I will continue meeting with our emergency preparedness team and personally talking with families, individuals and leaders from around our state to ensure we reach every household. We must also do what we can to demand peace and a de-escalation of tensions with North Korea.

Again, on behalf of the State of Hawai‘i, I apologize for yesterday’s events and any hardship and inconvenience this created for you, your family and loved ones.

Sincerely,

David Ige

Governor, State of Hawai‘i
