Donel Mangera has been the favourite on The Voice since he wowed judges with his energetic performance of Major Lazer’s Cold Water.

After mixing in Zimbabwean lyrics with his mash-up, the 16-year-old then was upstaged by his nan. 

She burst out onto the stage leaving all of the coaches gobsmacked. 

And now will.i.am, 43, has opened up on why he thinks Donel has the power to go all the way. 

Speaking to press including Express.co.uk at the semi final launch last week, The Black Eyed Peas star explained the benefits of Donel.

He spilled: “He’s doing his choreography, he’s his own little conductor – he knows exactly what he can do.”

What’s more, Will added he was nervous about whether Donel’s grandmother would be able to get over from Zimbabwe. 

Thankfully, she had a prime position in the audience for her grandson’s semifinal and it seems she will do the same for the final. 

will.i.am continued: “He’s a special little artist.”

The rapper also accidentally spilled Donel’s secret letter from Prince Harry. 

He revealed how his act will perform for the Queen at her 92nd birthday party following an invitation from the young prince. 

Sir Tom Jones also opened up on why his contestant, Ruti Olajugbagbe could steal Donel’s crown. 

She is currently joint favourite with the teenager for the title and it seems Tom, 77, is right behind her. 

He explained: “Ruti is wide open and she’s got even better from the blind auditions. 

“It surprises me every time she sings and she goes up and above every time she sings.”

Tom went on to explain how she is confident and hungry for the title, things which will ultimately help her get it. 

Ruti and Donel will be joined by Bella Voci from Jennifer Hudson’s team and Olly Murs’ offering, Lauren Bannon.

Jennifer in particular is excited for the final as she will get the chance to sing opera with her duo. 

However, she admitted the thought makes her feel a little bit “nervous”. 

Meanwhile, reports have circulated suggesting Olly, 33, could be about to switch from The Voice to the X Factor. 

He told Closer Magazine: “It would be amazing to judge alongside Simon [Cowell].”

The Voice UK final airs tomorrow on ITV at 8pm.

Tai has been impressing The Voice judges for weeks with her unique style of singing. 

Earlier tonight, the youngster performed Dolly Parton’s Jolene for a space on ITV’s live finals. 

She insisted to her coach, Will, that she had chosen the song and had a special arrangement of it. 

The Black Eyed Peas star and his US bandmates praised Tai for going her own way and knowing who she wanted to be. 

However, viewers didn’t see things the same way, feeling she had not done the classic country song justice. 

One fan posted on Twitter: “That girl really ruined Jolene. Im so sad. Dolly deserved more.”

A second raged: “What has she done to Jolene………..I’m absolutely appalled.”

Another fumed: “Errrr no.. no one messes with Dolly! Not Jolene – just no!!!!”

Some loved Tai’s performance and argued: “You gave me goosebumps!! Can’t wait to have a recording of Jolene. Like you said you aren’t on the show just to sing someone else’s song. So original and talented!!!”

“One of the best versions of Jolene I’ve ever heard,” another gushed.

will.i.am seemed to be on the latter half of the fence, and chose Tai to go through straight away to the live finals.

She fought off Anna Willison-Holt and Paige Young for the coveted spot but viewers thought the rapper had made the wrong decision. 

One fan wrote: “Seriously?! Tai was the last person who deserved to go through. She murdered Jolene and doesn’t have the talent to validate her attitude.”

Another added: “Did will.i.am seriously just pick tai over Anna/Paige?”

However, someone else thought differently, posting: “Wanted Anna to go through but after tonight’s performances I’m happy Will put Tai through! Like that she’s very confident in who she is as an artist & she knows how to reinvent songs & she isn’t afraid to do so! I hope people get behind her as she’s incredibly underrated.”

The Voice UK continues next Saturday on ITV at 8.30pm.

After Donel gave a stunning audition, coaches will.i.am, Jennifer Hudson, Sir Tom Jones and Olly Murs set about pitching for him. 

The 16-year-old wowed the judges with his rendition of Justin Beiber’s Cold Water in which he mixed Zimbabwean lyrics with English ones. 

Will, 42, promised the youngster a career outside of The Voice, explaining that he had his backpack with him full of technology to go and make a hit there and then.

However, Jennifer, 36, clearly was a fan of his style and stood in front of her chair asking any of her fellow coaches to “fight her” for the youngster. 

Newcomer Olly seemed up to the task, and joked that he would take her on before dramatically falling to the floor. 

As the  scene unfolded, will.i.am stayed cool and merely picked up his phone and pretended to call someone. 

Shocked Jennifer snapped: “Will what are you doing? Get off your phone!”

The cheeky Black Eyed Peas rapper responded that he was “calling a record label” at which the Spotlight hitmaker picked up hers and attempted to do the same. 

It seemed that Donel had his heart set on one coach however, as he decided to go with will.i.am. 

The Voice UK continues on ITV next Saturday at 8pm.

The 42-year-old became a topic of conversation last year for his repeated use of the word “fiyah” to describe something he liked the sound of. 

However, fans of the Black Eyed Peas frontman will be disappointed to hear that this season will not feature the same sort of catchphrases. 

Speaking at the launch for The Voice UK 2018, Will told Express.co.uk: “That was retired. I think I overdid ‘fiyah’ last season… that was 2017.

“That’s my fear that I will be the catchphrase guy so I wanted not to do that. 

“It’s on purpose, like a boycott – I’m boycotting my catchphrase!” 

will.i.am has been on The Voice since it launched in the UK back in 2011 and has admitted that he is looking past the show now when searching for the next big thing.

When asked what he wants to find this year, the rapper was resolved, saying: “This year I’m listening to voices that will sound good on the stuff on my hard drive. 

“I’ve got songs from John Legend, David Guetta and I keep listening for voices that will sound good on them. 

“I’m going for result-orientated… past the show.”

The rapper branded The X Factor star “mysterious” just like Gwen Stefani’s former husband, who was axed from the ITV show after just one season.

The 33-year-old is set to make his debut in the big red chair next week, but said his co-star, 42, has already been trying to “get into my head”.

“Olly is quite mysterious like Gavin Rossdale,” will.i.am commented. “He has similar circus antics as Ricky Wilson and he has the heartthrob front-man performer vibe that Danny from The Script had.

“He is like all three of them together. I like Olly a lot on the show.”

Olly will also appear alongside Sir Tom Jones and Jennifer Hudson, however it is The Black Eyed Peas star that has been testing him.

“Will is probably the most competitive,” the singer went on. “He was trying to get into my head and trying to convince me to turn when maybe I shouldn’t, but that is what it is all about.

“I think there is always going to be that nice little competitive edge and I think Will always brings that. I love it, it is all banter for me, I like it when people are testing me out and having fun with me.”

But will.i.am insisted that he was not playing “mind games”, responding: “Because I’ve been stressful before making decisions on the show, I am just trying to make it light and for him not to stress too much as it clogs you from just enjoying the person singing.”

While Olly said he enjoyed being the “underdog”, he admitted that he was anxious at first about his new job.

“I have got all these new people to meet and they all know each other and they have got to get to know me. But I have settled in brilliantly,” he confessed.

The Voice UK returns to ITV at 8pm on January 6.

Eagle-eyed viewers caught out The Voice Kids coach when he appeared to be keeping his distance from Piers Morgan, 52.

Good Morning Britain fans will be aware that subtlety isn’t Piers’ strong point, which he proved while speaking to the Black Eyed Peas singer.  

“People are a bit concerned about your body language towards me earlier Will,” he teased. “They thought you were either bored or irritated by me.”

The 42-year-old assured: “No, I’m just chilling.”

“You’re just tired, right?” asked Piers, who was swiftly assured when the chart-topping star laughed: “That’s just my chilling pose.”

Stirring the pot, Piers’ co-host Susanna Reid, 46, smirked: “Are you sure? Are you sure you’re not slightly irritated?”

Piers jibed: “Get the body language right and then people might think you’re actually happy to be here.” 

Earlier in the programme, Richard Arnold took his own swipe at Piers, which appeared to even make Susanna uncomfortable. 

And Charlotte Hawkins, 42, was forced to step in when Piers and Susanna had a heated debate over sports days.

Courtney from Hartlepool appeared shy as she introduced herself to viewers at home during her VT but when she took to the stage to perform she transformed. 

The 12-year-old gave an incredible rendition of Ike and Tina Turner’s Nutbush City Limits during the series premiere of the ITV singing competition that had the coach on their feet. 

Danny Jones was the only coach to turn his big red chair around for the youngster leaving will.i.am and Pixie Lott disappointed they didn’t see her dancing. 

The Black Eyed Peas singer then asked Courtney if she would perform the track again so that he could see her in action. 

She was more than happy to start the song again so she could show off her dance moves and vocal talent once more. 

After she finished, will.ia.am told her: “Like, you don’t know Janis Joplin, you don’t know any of these people…”

But Courtney promptly shut him down as she quipped: “Yeah I do.”

“Yeah but you don’t know them,” the coach went on to explain.

She then agreed: “Yeah not as like know them but I sing their songs.”

will.i.am continued: “But it seems as if you hung out with them and they were your pals and stuff”

It wasn’t just the coaches who were impressed with Courtney’s performance, viewers at home were also blown away and took to to comment on her singing. 

“WOW! Courtney was INCREDIBLE! What a cool rock chick! Well done @itsDannyJones, potential winner right there! #TheVoiceKids @thevoicekidsuk,” one viewer tweeted. 

While another added: “Loving Courtney singing and dancing to Nutbush, little diva in the making #TheVoiceKids.”

A third continued: “Courtney is amazing can you imagine how she’ll be in a few years?! I’m calling it. Finals for sure. #TheVoiceKids #TeamDanny.”

Speaking at The Voice Kids launch, McFly star Danny joked that the rapper didn’t instantly recognise him. 

The 31-year-old teased to press including Express.co.uk: “He didn’t have a clue who I was. He said, ‘Yo Pixie’, and I was like, ‘Huh?’.”

However, pop princess Pixie Lott revealed that the Black Eyed Peas rapper is “obviously amazing” to work with. 

The 26-year-old admitted: “I guess he is great to learn off because he’s done it so many times. 

“He mad us feel so at ease. He’s been great and it was good to know that Danny was new as well,” Pixie added. 

Despite her first time in the famous red chairs, Pixie admitted that she felt “attached” to the youngsters. 

She explained: “I get really attached because I love them all. I just really enjoy it.

“It reminds me of when I was at that age and it inspires me,” Pixie added. 

This follows will.i.am’s claim that the young version of The Voice UK will produce “bigger” stars than its adult counterpart. 

He detailed: “There’s not so much pressure on these kids to win The Voice. 

“The prize is not a record contract, it’s £30,000 towards a music scholarship and a trip to Disneyland. 

“Because of that, there’s more of a chance that the kid is going to develop and brush past the cynics,” Will added.

The 42-year-old choked back his emotions while trying to thank his act Michelle for giving a powerful performance with a strong message.

Michelle finished her rendition of Get Here by spotting her son in the audience and telling him to never give up on his dreams.

Fighting back tears, Will said: “So, I’m happy that you sang that song, because my uncle, he used to play that song.

“He used to play it for my mum, and the message you just told your son is the same thing my mum used to tell me.” 

Pausing every few moments, Will continued: “So, my mum and my uncle were like…he’s passed away.

“But he would be really happy with your rendition of the song. Thank you for singing it.” 

Looking visibly moved, host Emma Willis put her arm around Michelle and thanked Will for his story and comments.

Fans of the Black Eyed Peas frontman instantly took to social media to comfort the ITV judge.

One viewer tweeted: “#thevoiceuk omg!!! Absolute goosebumps!!! emotional Will.”

“@iamwill an amazingly fitting tribute to both your mum and uncle by the lovely @meeshjohn. My heart feels your pain x #thevoiceuk,” posted another. 

However, one viewer wasn’t so pleased, posting: “Sorry Will but focus on singer we don’t need family history #TheVoiceUK.”

The 51-year-old took a seat alongside Sir Tom Jones, 76, will.i.am, 41, and fellow newcomer Jennifer Hudson, 35, for the first time as the swinging chair show jumped ship form the BBC to ITV. 

The Bush frontman, whose ex-wife Gwen Stefani is a coach on The Voice USA, faced mixed reviews from viewers when the series first aired in January, as thousands turned to Twitter to ask: “Who is Gavin Rossdale?” 

So, after making such a successful U-turn with audiences, and the confirmation that will.i.am will be returning for a seventh run, will Gavin be following suit? 

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Gavin admitted: “I’d love to! I really enjoy it, but it’s not up to me. I’m just a hired gun.”

As for now, this Sunday will see Gavin cut his colourful team of six down to just three as the competition reaches the Knockout stages live on ITV. 

Both Jennifer and Sir Tom went through the same process with some shock results as Mo Adeniran emerged as the clear frontrunner among fans.

“Last week was easy street for me but this week I’m under pressure because I want them to all do well, so that’s not fun,” he sighed. “But yeah, I’m happy for them.

“I just care about them, I’m emotionally invested but I think that’s the idea of making good TV – is to make it crushing. 

“That’s what they did with the blinds, to make it seem like an eternity and make it as tense as possible.”

Referring to his neighbouring coach Jennifer, who finished in seventh place on American Idol in 2004, he stressed that he doesn’t care if his acts land the coveted record deal with Polydor.

“I know everyone’s obsessed with the idea that you have to win the show, but I don’t think like that,” he assured. “It’s to get them in a professional setting.

“Although three people will feel like it’s the end of the world, it’s not at all. Look at someone like Tom, he’s been in it for so long – can you imagine if he hung on to this one result? That would be madness. 

“It’s built up like they’re going to jump off a cliff. They’ve all proved how good they are and I have secret dreams that they’ll all go on to have proper careers. For me, not disrespecting the show, but there’s a lot more to their lives than winning or not.”

The Voice UK continues tomorrow night at 8.30pm and again at 7.45pm on ITV.
