ON NETFLIX

Velvet Buzzsaw: In retrospect, it’s sort of fascinating that Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler was so tightly constructed, since his follow-ups — 2017’s Roman J. Israel, Esq. and this L.A. art world satire — are so messy. But that messiness is far more compelling this time around; this is a playful, sometimes goofy, sometimes freaky effort that overcomes the fish-in-a-barrel quality of its subject matter to take Gilroy into new and peculiar territory. The horror elements may not work entirely, but the effort is admirable (and there are some very inventive kills). More importantly, in spite of the returns of Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo (and the presumptions of that casting), this is quite unlike anything he’s done before. Queue it up and go for a ride.

ON 4K / BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

Widows: Steve McQueen’s decision to follow-up the Oscar-winning triumph of 12 Years a Slave with a popcorn movie — a heist picture adaptation of a British miniseries, co-written with Gone Girl scribe Gillian Flynn — prompted more than a little head-scratching back in the fall, and if there’s a clear fault with the result, it’s that he didn’t go all the way with it. That said, for every odd flourish that doesn’t work, there’s a splash of color or commentary that does (that one-shot car ride is a marvel), and the performances are top-shelf, with Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, and Daniel Kaluuya the MVPs. (Includes featurettes.)

The Grinch: This feature-length crack at Dr. Seuss’ Christmas classic comes to us via Illumination Entertainment, the people behind the Despicable Me movies — and boy oh boy can you tell, so blatantly does it attempt to frame Mr. Grinch like Gru 2.0 (down to the introduction accompaniment of slow, growling hip-hop). But if you can forgive that, there’s a lot to like here: the animation is bright and expressive (particularly in the Blu-ray 3D edition), Benedict Cumberbatch is clearly having a blast voicing the title role, and, hey, if nothing else, it’s miles better than that Jim Carrey/Ron Howard atrocity. (Includes featurettes, music video, and “mini-movies.”)

ON BLU-RAY / DVD / VOD

The Sisters Brothers: A Prophet director Jacques Audiard smoothly adapts Patrick deWitt’s novel, a Western with splashes of a road movie and a Horace Greeley-style adventure tale thrown in; the French filmmaker engaging meanders through the frontier with a pair of double acts (John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix, Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed), and each of them gets a chance to shine. But the best moments belong to Reilly, funny and touching as a sensitive man of the gun who wants to be better, smarter, and more understanding, if he could just get his damn fool brother to settle down. Darkly funny and often deeply disorienting, with a marvel of an ending. (Includes featurettes, Q&A, and trailer.)

The Guilty: This tight-fisted thriller from first-time Danish director Gustav Möller runs a trim 84 minutes, all of them spent within the walls of a 911 call center, where the smooth surfaces and shiny computer screens give the entire enterprise a slick claustrophobia. Asger (the excellent Jakob Cedergren) is a cop busted down to jockeying the phones while awaiting judgment on a dodgy shooting; near the end of his shift, he gets a call from a woman who’s been kidnapped by her abusive husband, whom Asgar tries to save from his considerable distance. The writing and acting are sharp as a tack, but Möller’s real skill is understanding and manipulating audience expectation — there are scenes where he knows we’re ahead of him, creating unbearable tension as we wait for the movie to catch up, and then he’ll turn the whole movie upside down. Crisp, slippery, and smashing.

ON BLU-RAY

Shame: Ingmar Bergman’s 1968 film (a new stand-alone release from Criterion) opens like another of his many relationship-based dramas, with standbys Liv Ullmann and Max Von Sydow as a married farm couple dealing with fairly typical married-couple stuff. And then, it being 1968, the world makes its way in, with forces of authority and rebellion pushing these two people to test the limits of their trust, mortality, and stability. Their descent into desperation and misery isn’t exactly comfort viewing, but Ullmann and Von Sydow are (as usual) stunningly good, the black-and-white cinematography by Sven Nykvist is appropriately crisp and harsh, and Bergman expertly sidesteps the land mines of polemics, crafting a picture that’s, yes, tough and uncomfortable, but also intimate and even erotic. (Includes new and archival interviews and vintage featurette.)

Kotch: Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau co-starred in eight films over two-plus decades, with two more outliers: both appeared, though not together, in JFK, and Matthau was directed by Lemmon (who did not appear) in this gentle 1971 comedy/drama, new on Blu from KL Studio Classics. It is a film very much of its time, with a decidedly ‘70s TV-movie aesthetic at work (particularly in the cinematography, music, and reliance on freeze-frames). But Lemmon was skilled at bringing out the best in his collaborator, who ages up — he was only 50 at the time it was made — to play a likable codger on a platonic road trip with his grandson’s babysitter. Matthau’s best work always had a W.C. Fields quality, and this is perhaps his most Fieldsian character (affection for children aside); he mumbles, hoots, and charms all the way through. (Includes audio commentary and trailer.)

  • What we’ve been Reading:
    • Jacob dipped his toe back into Transmetropolitan.
  • What we’ve been Eating:
    • Peter ate a bunch of bad food while off his diet. At Friendsgiving he tried Ben and Amy’s Shaqaroni and Cheese but fell in love with pumpkin pie dip and the very dangerous Caramel Apple Sangria. I also waited three hours in line for Howlin Rays.
    • Jacob ate two Thanksgiving dinners and made peanut butter pie that he didn’t get to eat.
    • Brad was introduced to the majesty of the Tim Tam Slam, tried Sugar Cookie Toast Crunch, and had Indian food that he didn’t hate.
    • Hoai-Tran learned how to make pho in her new instant pot!
  • What we’ve been Playing:
    • Peter played some tabletop games on Friendsgiving and a game day, including Werewords, Hail Hydra, Detective, and Chameleon.

‘Widows’ Featurette: How Chicago Shapes The Steve McQueen Heist Thriller https://briefnews.eu/widows-featurette-how-chicago-shapes-the-steve-mcqueen-heist-thriller/ https://briefnews.eu/widows-featurette-how-chicago-shapes-the-steve-mcqueen-heist-thriller/#respond Mon, 15 Oct 2018 09:17:48 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/widows-featurette-how-chicago-shapes-the-steve-mcqueen-heist-thriller/ widows featurette

“We’re after the truth. I don’t go to a location with a stencil. I adapt to the environment,” reads a quote by director Steve McQueen at the beginning of the newest Widows featurette about the film’s Chicago location. The gritty heist thriller, penned by Gone Girl author Gillian Flynn, is set in the Windy City, and couldn’t take place anywhere else. The featurette dives into why that is, and how Chicago helped shape the highly anticipated movie.

Widows Featurette

Though Widows adapts a 1983 British series of the same name, McQueen and Flynn’s version is inextricably tied to Chicago. The filmmaker and author co-wrote the screenplay together — in Flynn’s first work as screenwriter — and thus wanted to ground the story in a time and place that could bring together the dramatically different characters played by Viola Davis, Michelle Rodriguez, Elizabeth Debicki, and Cynthia Erivo. In a new featurette released by 20th Century Fox, McQueen and Flynn explain why that place had to be Chicago, Illinois.  McQueen says in the featurette:

“The location for the setting of Widows was very strategic. I wanted an environment that dealt with current-day issues. Race, politics, crime, policing. Chicago is the epicenter of all of that.”

“The extremes that you see are pretty spectacular,” McQueen adds. “Within 50 meters you could see the richest of environments to the poorest.”

At this point, moviegoers may best know Chicago onscreen as the location doubling for Gotham City in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight — which Widows may unintentionally recall in various heist and chase scenes sprinkled throughout this featurette. The site of the famous tunnel chase in The Dark Knight is shown in this featurette, as Viola Davis narrates, “It creates a whole story, a full picture, as opposed to something that’s contrived and imagined. When people see this movie, they’re going to really be in it. They’re gonna believe it.”

Maybe it’s just me, but that part of the featurette feels kind of like a jab at the “imagined” world of the Dark Knight and like a message to audiences saying, here’s the real Chicago. But that won’t stop me from looking forward to this movie, which has a murderer’s row of talent in front of the screen (Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Daniel Kaluuya, Jacki Weaver, Carrie Coon, Robert Duvall, and Liam Neeson round out the supporting cast) and behind the screen.

Speaking of behind the screen, here’s another Widows featurette spotlighting the work of McQueen, who directed the Oscar-winning 12 Years a Slave.

Here is the official synopsis for Widows:

From Academy Award®-winning director Steve McQueen (“12 Years a Slave”) and co-writer and bestselling author Gillian Flynn (“Gone Girl”) comes a blistering, modern-day thriller set against the backdrop of crime, passion and corruption. “Widows” is the story of four women with nothing in common except a debt left behind by their dead husbands’ criminal activities. Set in contemporary Chicago, amid a time of turmoil, tensions build when Veronica (Oscar® winner Viola Davis), Linda (Michelle Rodriguez), Alice (Elizabeth Debicki) and Belle (Cynthia Erivo) take their fate into their own hands and conspire to forge a future on their own terms.

Widows opens in theaters on November 16, 2018.

‘Fargo’ Star Carrie Coon Boards Steve McQueen’s Heist Drama ‘Widows’ https://briefnews.eu/fargo-star-carrie-coon-boards-steve-mcqueens-heist-drama-widows/ https://briefnews.eu/fargo-star-carrie-coon-boards-steve-mcqueens-heist-drama-widows/#respond Sat, 24 Jun 2017 20:01:43 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/fargo-star-carrie-coon-boards-steve-mcqueens-heist-drama-widows/ Carrie Coon Widows

Fresh off her excellent turns as police chief Gloria Burgle in the third season of FX’s Fargo and as Nora Durst on HBO’s The Leftovers, actress Carrie Coon is the latest to join the superb cast of director Steve McQueen’s upcoming heist movie, Widows. Read all about the Carrie Coon Widows casting below.

McQueen, who hasn’t directed a movie since his 2013 film 12 Years a Slave won the Oscar for Best Picture, signed on to make Widows back in September of last year. The movie is based on Lynda La Plante‘s 1983 British miniseries of the same name, and tells the story of a group of armed thieves who are killed during a botched robbery. In the wake of their husbands’ deaths, the thieves’ wives band together to finish the job the men in their lives couldn’t successfully complete. Viola Davis, Elizabeth Debicki, Michelle Rodriguez, Liam Neeson, Colin Farrell, and Daniel Kaluuya all star, and I have to assume that McQueen’s muse, Michael Fassbender, will also pop up, even if in just a tiny capacity. (Fassbender has appeared in all of McQueen’s movies thus far.)

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Coon will play one of the widows who “declines to join the others in the job,” so it’s unclear whether she’ll just have a super small part or whether her character will still be hanging around in the background, possibly serving as the new heist squad’s moral compass. As she’s shown in her fantastic TV work this year, Coon can play beaten down and exhausted with the best of them, and I suspect she’ll be tapping into that skill set once again here.

The actress, who made her feature debut in David Fincher’s Gone Girl, will next appear in Steven Spielberg’s The Papers this winter as no-nonsense Washington Post editor Meg Greenfield alongside Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

One thing seems crystal clear: with a cast this great and a film with such a juicy premise, McQueen stands to continue the exponential upward trend of box office success throughout his career. 2008’s Hunger made $ 2 million, 2017’s Shame made $ 17 million, 12 Years a Slave jumped up to $ 137 million, and I can easily see Widows – a non-superhero movie aimed squarely at adults – becoming a full-fledged mega-hit. The film doesn’t have an official release date in place yet, but we suspect it’ll arrive sometime in 2018. We’ll be sure to keep you posted with any new info as soon as we hear it.

Veterans & war widows are furious about British military’s Iraq-Afghan memorial https://briefnews.eu/veterans-war-widows-are-furious-about-british-militarys-iraq-afghan-memorial/ https://briefnews.eu/veterans-war-widows-are-furious-about-british-militarys-iraq-afghan-memorial/#respond Thu, 09 Mar 2017 10:05:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/veterans-war-widows-are-furious-about-british-militarys-iraq-afghan-memorial/ War veterans and widows have attacked the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) conduct over a new Iraq and Afghanistan memorial, unveiled on Thursday.

One war widow told RT she is outraged at the ‘hypocritical’ decision not to invite her and other bereaved relatives to the official opening, while veterans questioned the tone and veracity of the £1 million (US$ 1.22 million) monolith.

The Iraq Afghanistan Memorial was unveiled by the Queen and Prince Harry.

It was funded after a drive by the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun newspaper and part-funded by global arms giant BAE Systems.

Veterans

RT asked veterans of both the 2003 Iraq War and the Afghanistan War whether they think the monument is fitting.Daniel Lenham, who served in the Royal Air Force (RAF), questioned the tone of the memorial, which focuses on the UK’s delivery of aid, promotion of democracy and rebuilding work in Iraq.

“That isn’t even a close reflection of my experience,” he told RT. “I didn’t see any benevolence. Just rockets fired at us in a place we were not welcome.”

He said the memorial is about “shifting public opinion. It has nothing to do with remembrance. It is about altering our understanding of Iraq, so we look like the good guys.”

Wayne Sharrocks served two tours in Afghanistan as a member of the Rifles and Special Forces Support Group (SFSG).

He said the humanitarian gloss on the memorial is not accurate.

“It seems like they are trying to make it shiny and rebrand the war,” he said. “Like a polished version of what it was.”

Asked about the involvement of the Sun newspaper and the global weapons manufacturer BAE Systems, Sharrocks said, “I don’t think it is appropriate for an arms dealer to do war memorials, or even be involved.”

“They’ve got no morals, they make money out of death, their business model is to kill,” he said.

Forgotten widows

Wendy Rayner, whose husband was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, told RT she and other widows are outraged at the MoD’s percieved “snub.”

“To be honest they are a set of idiots. I would like a formal apology for their incompetence,” she said.

Although the event was briefly mentioned last year at an event at the National Arboretum – a memorial to those killed in war – Rayner said she had heard nothing more about it until a few days ago.

The MoD has since rushed to invite those who have complained.

“Now they are trying to cover up, now all of a sudden they are inviting us all,” she said, adding that the widows had asked for nothing and would have “paid their own way” if they had been told in advance.

On the dignitaries who were invited well in advance, she said it would have been a basic courtesy to give bereaved single parents fair warning.

“There are going to be a lot of people who sacrificed nothing. This is too little, too late,” she said.

The MoD initially claimed there was only room for 2,500 people at the Victoria Embankment Gardens event and that they had to pick carefully to cover representatives of the various military charities.

They have since backtracked and invited all war widows.

Rayner will not be attending given the late notice. Like other widows she is a now a busy single parent, she said.

She and others have instead planned to stage their own, more personal visit to the monument in May when they come to London to attend a larger gathering of families who had lost their loved ones in the wars.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) forgot to invite war widows to the unveiling of its new arms industry-funded war memorial to the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.

The memorial is due to be unveiled on Thursday to commemorate military and civilian personnel who served in the Gulf War, 2003 Iraq War and Afghanistan War.

Only 2,500 places were available at the opening at Victoria Gardens and the event afterwards at Horse Guards in central London, and a number of wives and families of soldiers killed in the wars say they have been snubbed.

“All the Hooray Henrys and the dignitaries will be there who haven’t even lost anybody in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan – and they haven’t even got the decency to write a letter to us to inform us of what is going on,” Wendy Rayner, whose husband Peter Rayner was killed in Afghanistan, told the Times Tuesday.

Rayner said that other widows had also not been informed of the ceremony.

“It makes you wonder: do your men get killed in war because of the incompetence of higher ranks, and that incompetence means they can’t even organize this event properly?” she said.

Julie Hall, whose son Darren Deady was killed in Afghanistan in 2010, did not receive an invitation either.

“I feel disappointed. It is in memory of our kids,” she said.

“It is hard when you hear that a lot of dignitaries are going to be there. What right have they got to be there above us? They haven’t sacrificed anything, have they?”

The memorial, which will feature two pillars to represent Iraq and Afghanistan, was backed by the Rupert Murdoch-owned Sun newspaper and was partially funded by the global arms giant BAE systems.

It will be opened by the Queen and Prince Harry, who served as an Apache pilot in Afghanistan.

“To ensure each group is represented, we asked charities and groups representing the bereaved of each service to suggest attendees and we look forward to welcoming them on Thursday,” an MoD spokesperson told the paper.
