“I SEE PATIENTS every day who are going to have babies because they work at Facebook,” says Peter Klatsky of Spring Fertility clinic in Silicon Valley. Tech giants now include egg-freezing and in vitro fertilisation in their employees’ health coverage. But even as high-earning Americans have the cost of making a baby covered by their companies, many low earners cannot get paid leave to look after theirs.

Since the end of the first world war, American workers have seen a steady rise in benefits. According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, “supplements” to wages, which include most of today’s benefits but exclude performance bonuses, rose from 1.4% of total compensation in 1917 to 17.5% in 2000. Using a broader measure that includes performance bonuses as well as paid leave, overtime, health insurance and contributions to retirement plans, that share has risen further since: from 27% of compensation in 2000 to 32% now.

THE one-percenters are now gobbling up more of the pie in America—that much is well known. This trend, though disconcerting, is not unique to the modern era. A new study, by Timothy Kohler of Washington State University and 17 others, finds that inequality may well have been rising for several thousand years, at least in some parts of the world. The scholars examined 63 archaeological sites and estimated the levels of wealth inequality in the societies whose remains were dug up, by studying the distributions of house sizes.

As a measure they used the Gini coefficient (a perfectly equal society would have a Gini coefficient of zero). It rose from about 0.2 around 8000BC in Jerf el-Ahmar, on the Euphrates in modern-day Syria, to 0.5 in around 79AD in Pompeii. Data on burial goods, though sparse, point to similar trends.

Whenever Tesla makes some change to its lineup, usually by adding versions to its top end, it reconfigures the bottom end to simplify sales and streamline manufacturing. With the introduction of a whole new model, Tesla is making changes again. Deliveries of the Tesla Model 3 begin this month, and Electrek reports that Tesla will discontinue its least-expensive version of the Model S by the end of 2017.

The rear-wheel-drive Model S 75 starts at $ 69,500. Getting rid of that leaves the all-wheel-drive 75D as the cheapest Model S, at $ 74,500. This increases the price gap between the Model 3 (starting at $ 35,000) and the Model S. This would also leave the S as an AWD-only lineup, leaving the 3 as the only new Tesla available with RWD.

Further distinguishing the two models is the fact that the Model S is much more customizable. Earlier, we saw a Tesla document that compares the two vehicles, showing that the Model S offers more than 1,500 configurations and a number of premium features, while the Model 3 offers fewer than 100 possible configurations. The sheet also points out that although Model S customers who buy their car with a referral get free Supercharging for the life of the ownership, Model 3 customers are relegated to pay-per-use charging on Tesla’s network.

With a big difference in performance and features, and now the wider price gap between the two sedans, Tesla is keeping the pools pf prospective buyers as far from each other as possible.

Lee was taken into custody at the Seoul Detention Centre. Its the second attempt to arrest the senior Samsung executive, after the same court rejected the previous arrest request last month.

On Tuesday, the prosecutors had requested a warrant to arrest Lee and another top Samsung executive and head of the Korea Equestrian Federation Park Sang-jin over bribery and other charges, since new evidence had been gathered.

“We acknowledge the cause and necessity of the arrest,” said the judge in the ruling, acknowledging the vitality of the new evidence.

The court, however, declined the request to arrest Park Sang-jin, since his “position, the boundary of his authority and his actual role” did not require such measure.

Lee is suspected of providing $ 37.31 million (43 billion won) to businesses and organizations backed by President Park’s secret confidante, Choi Soon-sil, in exchange for approval of a controversial $ 8 billion merger of two Samsung companies in 2015. Lee and other Samsung executives have denied the accusations.

In December 2016, during a parliamentary hearing Lee admitted giving $ 17.46 million (20.4 billion won) to the two foundations, allegedly linked to Choi, but denied seeking any favor in return. He also admitted providing a sum of money and a horse to help the equestrian career of Choi’s daughter and said that he “regretted” that “gift.”

An old friend of the president, Choi, who held no official government position was allowed to edit the president’s speeches and could even arrange various state benefits for top corporations, according to investigators.

President Park, who has been suspended from her duties due to impeachment proceedings last December, has denied any alleged wrongdoings but apologized for her relations with Choi. Park formally remains the President until the Constitutional Court decides whether to back the parliamentary decision.
