The holidays are here, and so last-minute shoppers are going to be in a serious rush to get all the items they need, especially Christmas shoppers that haven’t even put up a tree yet. Those seriously late folks may want to invest in a Challenger Hellcat because apparently they can go an incredible 174 mph with a Christmas tree strapped to the roof.

This was discovered by the folks at Hennessey. They got a Hellcat Widebody from Dodge for the little experiment, along with a suction cup mount roof rack from SeaSucker and a real Christmas tree from Lowe’s. Then it was off to the Continental Tire test track in Texas to see how fast it could go, which, as mentioned was 174 mph.

As you’ll see in the video, it takes quite a bit of road to move up from 170 to 174 mph. It’s impressive that the tree and roof rack don’t seem to budge. And it’s all capped off with a huge smokey burnout to the sound of V8 rumble and supercharger whine. It’s a fun way to get into the holiday spirit. And we’ll look forward to next year when maybe Dodge will give Hennessey a Demon to try out.

Just when you thought Dodge had exhausted every permutation of the Challenger with the mind-blowing, 840-hp Demon, the SRT division has come up with yet another way to slice and dice the muscle coupe. And this latest variation is an enticing one: Called the Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody, this new 707-hp beast adds some serious handling chops and a meaner look courtesy of extra width, meatier tires, and a few other tweaks.

You’ll recognize the Hellcat Widebody’s fender flares and front splitter from the Demon. Those bulging fenders increase the car’s width by 3.5 inches, all the better to cover the wider 305/35ZR-20 Pirelli P Zero tires (the standard Challenger Hellcat uses 275/40ZR-20 rubber). Dodge says that these tires improve the Hellcat’s turning and stopping abilities, claiming increased skidpad grip and a two-second-quicker lap time around an unidentified 1.7-mile road course. And even though its 707-hp supercharged 6.2-liter V-8 is unchanged, the extra grip helps the Widebody get off the line quicker, with Dodge estimating a 0.1-second-quicker zero-to-60-mph time and a 0.3-second-quicker quarter-mile.

2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Widebody

Another noteworthy mechanical change for the Hellcat Widebody is a new electrically assisted power-steering system that replaces the standard car’s hydraulically assisted rack. This allows for new selectable steering modes that integrate with the car’s customizable SRT driving modes that include Street, Sport, and Track.

Beyond the performance upgrades, the Widebody’s other priority is looking bad-ass. And it does, with the key changes being its more aggressive stance and new five-spoke wheels with a “Devil’s Rim” design. It otherwise shares the standard Hellcat’s hood scoop, rear spoiler, and menacing front grille; the only tweak to the interior is a new red Hellcat badge in the gauge cluster.

For the privilege of owning this better-handling Hellcat, you’ll pay $ 72,590 to start, or $ 7300 more than a standard 2017 Challenger Hellcat. It will be offered with the choice of a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic when it starts arriving at dealerships this fall.

The Challenger Hellcat gets a new, wider iteration for the 2018 model year. Simply called the Hellcat Widebody, the car features the very same fender flares and front lip spoiler as the Dodge Demon, but with the “normal” 707-horsepower supercharged V8 of the basic Hellcat. This means that it isn’t quite as wild of an upgrade as we were expecting when we saw a prototype last month, but that doesn’t mean it’s a disappointment.

The addition of Demon flares creates space for new 11-inch-wide wheels at all four corners, and they’re shod in 305mm Pirelli P-Zero tires. These fat tires make the Hellcat Widebody faster in a straight line and in the corners. It races to 60 mph a tenth of a second faster than the narrow one with a time of 3.4 seconds, and the gap expands at the quarter mile. The Widebody finishes the distance in 10.9 seconds as opposed to the regular Hellcat’s 11.2-second time.

Dodge also claims that cornering grip climbs from .93g in the standard width car to .97g with the wider rubber. The grip improvements really come together on a road course. The company reports that the Widebody is two seconds faster than the narrow car on a 1.7-mile road course.

The added width and tires will cost you, though. The new Hellcat Widebody goes for a base price of $ 72,590. That’s $ 7,300 for what amounts to wide wheels and tires, and the bodywork to house them. Still, it is the fastest Hellcat available this side of a Demon. And at a glance, it looks just like the Demon, which costs $ 12,000 more than the Hellcat Widebody.

Though Shelby already offers a Super Snake version of the current Mustang, the company clearly wanted more. Specifically, it wanted more width. The result is a new Super Snake concept with a wide body kit, and apparently it’s the first Shelby-designed concept in over 10 years. You would be forgiven for at first mistaking it for a normal Super Snake, as the spoilers, diffuser, and side skirts are very similar, but the fenders have been significantly pushed out, and the correspondingly wide wheels fitted underneath. The rear wheels are 12.5 inches wide, and the front wheels are 11. These modifications increase the track by 4 inches at the rear, and 2.5 inches at the front.

The Super Snake concept receives various other expected upgrades. The Mustang’s 5.0-liter V8 has a supercharger that allows it to make about 750 horsepower. Fully adjustable coilover suspension is found at each corner along with larger brakes. The front discs are 16 inches in diameter with 6-piston calipers, and the rears are 14 inches with 4-piston calipers. But if you want a widebody Super Snake of your own, you’re out of luck, since it’s only a concept at the moment.

What isn’t a concept is the Super Snake F-150 Shelby. The company will build 150 of the trucks this year. It also has a 750-horsepower supercharged V8 under the hood, and buyers can choose to mate it to a two-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive drivetrain. And of course, being a Shelby product, it has stripes and flashy bodywork so no one will mistake it for something else. It isn’t cheap, though. You’ll have to shell out $ 96,880 to take one home. To put that into perspective, just $ 10,000 more would buy you a new F-150 Raptorand a Shelby GT350 Mustang.
