Rep. Matt Gaetz addresses attendees during the Turning Point USA Student Action Summit on July 23, 2022, in Tampa, Florida.

  • The Washington Post reported Gaetz sought a preemptive presidential pardon in a sex trafficking investigation.
  • Sources told WaPo that Johnny McEntee, a White House official, testified he received the request from Gaetz.
  • A spokesperson for Gaetz told Insider the congressman never directly asked Trump for a pardon.

Congressman Matt Gaetz preemptively sought a presidential pardon relating to an ongoing investigation into whether he sex trafficked a 17-year-old, according to reporting by The Washington Post.

Sources familiar with the testimony told The Washington Post that Johnny McEntee, a staffer in the Donald Trump White House, told the United States House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack he received the request from Rep. Gaetz around the time of the siege on the Capitol.

McEntee testified Gaetz told him he was aware of an investigation being launched into his conduct and that "he did not do anything wrong but they are trying to make his life hell, and you know, if the president could give him a pardon, that would be great," The Washington Post reported. McEntee also testified Gaetz said he asked White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows for a pardon.

The Department of Justice probe into whether Gaetz had a sexual relationship with an underage girl and paid her to travel with him was first reported in 2021 and continues to be investigated.

Gaetz has not been charged with any crime and has consistently denied any wrongdoing.

"Congressman Matt Gaetz discussed pardons for many other people publicly and privately at the end of President Donald Trump's first term," a spokesman for Rep. Gaetz told Insider in an email. "As for himself, President Trump addressed this malicious rumor more than a year ago stating, 'Congressman Matt Gaetz has never asked me for a pardon.' Rep. Gaetz continues to stand by President Trump's statement."

The spokesperson did not respond to questions about whether Gaetz denied the conversations about pardons with McEntee or Meadows occurred.

The GOP congressman, one of 20 Republicans to vote against reauthorizing a sex-trafficking law in July, has received ongoing support from former President Trump relating to the investigation, despite Trump's comments calling for death to human traffickers.

Some pilots were sent a mid-flight bulletin announcing the death of Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday afternoon.

The note, issued through the Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System, offered a choice on whether to announce the death of the monarch to crew and passengers on board.

According to an image shared by a British pilot on Twitter, the bulletin read: "ATTN all aircraft. To be read at your discretion it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family at this very difficult time. Sent 17592/08."

The pilot, who goes by the username Katie Pilot, did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

Britain's longest-reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, passed away in Balmoral Castle on September 8. The news was first announced by the royal family on Twitter, quickly followed by media outlets.

The pilot said who shared the image said she received the news while flying "somewhere over France," adding it was a "somewhat surreal and extremely sad moment."

She said in a Twitter comment that she opted not to announce the Queen's death to the rest of the plane as the flight had on-board WiFi and the news was already making its way around the cabin.

A pilot on a British Airways flight traveling from Miami to London chose to utilize the plane's announcement system to relay the news.

In a video taken by a passenger and reported by E! News, the pilot can be heard telling people mid-flight: "This is an incredibly sad day for all of us on British Airways. Our thoughts are with the entire royal family as we grieve her immeasurable loss."

He can also be heard inviting passengers to hold a moment of silence for the late Queen.

Trump loved the Queen, but it may up to Biden to decide whether or not he gets invited to her funeral https://briefnews.eu/trump-loved-the-queen-but-it-may-up-to-biden-to-decide-whether-or-not-he-gets-invited-to-her-funeral/ https://briefnews.eu/trump-loved-the-queen-but-it-may-up-to-biden-to-decide-whether-or-not-he-gets-invited-to-her-funeral/#respond Sun, 11 Sep 2022 05:30:20 +0000 https://briefnews.eu/trump-loved-the-queen-but-it-may-up-to-biden-to-decide-whether-or-not-he-gets-invited-to-her-funeral/ Queen Elizabeth II and President Donald Trump sitting beside each other and smiling.
Queen Elizabeth II and President Donald Trump attend an event to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day in Portsmouth, England Wednesday, June 5, 2019.

  • President Donald Trump posted a long tribute to the Queen after her death on Thursday.
  • Biden said he'll attend the funeral, but CNN reported it's up to him to invite former US presidents.
  • Around 2,000 people are expected to attend The Queen's funeral, which is set for September 19.

The Royal Family announced on Saturday that the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II will take place on September 19, but who exactly will make the guest list is still up in the air.

The Queen died on Thursday at age 96 after a historic 70-year reign. Buckingham Palace has long planned for her death, upon which her son, now King Charles III, immediately ascended to the throne.

The Queen's coffin is being prepared to lie in state in Westminster Hall for four days prior to the funeral to allow the public to pay their respects. Officials anticipate more than one million people will attend.

An official funeral service is expected to be held at Westminster Abbey, where the Queen was crowned and where she married Prince Philip in 1947. Around 2,000 people are expected, including Europe's royal families and leaders from around the world.

President Joe Biden said Friday that although he did not yet have details about the service, he would be attending. Whether former US presidents will make the guest list is unclear.

CNN reported Friday that the UK was leaving that decision to Biden.

"I am told by a couple diplomatic officials that Buckingham Palace is leaving it up to every country individually," Jeff Zeleny, CNN's chief national affairs correspondent, said, noting that former President Barack Obama invited George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Jimmy Carter to go with him to the funeral of Nelson Mandela in 2013.

"So there is protocol for having US presidents invite other presidents," he continued. "Who knows, maybe in the spirit of forgiving and giving President Biden will invite Donald Trump on Air Force One. I doubt that will happen, but I do expect some type of a bipartisan delegation."

Former President Donald Trump, for his part, was a vocal fan of the Queen, whom he met on several official state visits during his presidency. After the news of her death, Trump shared a long tribute to the Queen in a series of posts on Truth Social.

"Melania and I will always cherish our time together with the Queen, and never forget Her Majesty's generous friendship, great wisdom, and wonderful sense of humor. What a grand and beautiful lady she was—there was nobody like her!" he wrote, adding: "May God bless the Queen, may she reign forever in our hearts, and may God hold her and Prince Philip in abiding care."

Trump also shared several photos of him and the Queen smiling together during their visits.

Trump and Biden, on the other hand, may be on more hostile terms than ever after the president's address on September 1 in which he said "MAGA Republicans" represented a danger to American democracy.

While discussing whether or not Biden would invite Trump to the funeral, CNN's Jake Tapper said he thought it would be a "clever" move for the president to invite him and see if he goes.

"I don't think former President Trump would want to be subordinate on Air Force One, and I think probably he prefers his own plane anyway," Tapper said.

“Party’s over, you pieces of s–t!”

The ever-irrepressible Harley Quinn makes her grand entrance this Friday on the DC Universe digital subscription service, while spitting out those choice six words. But make no mistake, that last word — like scores upon scores that follow — is not bleeped or otherwise censored in this TV-MA ‘toon.

“Look, I love going in the booth and screaming and cussing for two straight hours,” says Big Bang Theory alum Kaley Cuoco, who voices the titular villainess. “I usually do that alone in my bedroom, so I’ve been able to experience that in a whole other way.”

With Patrick Schumacker and Justin Halpern (of the DC Comics-based Powerless sitcom) serving as showrunners, Harley Quinn finds “Joker’s girlfriend” fed up with being described and dismissed as just that. So she breaks up with her “Puddin’” and ventures out to make her own name as a crime kingpin, assembling a crew of “the f–king worst” bad guys available.

Lake Bell (Bless This Mess) voices Poison Ivy, who fast emerges as a BFF to Harley, while other cast — many of them also voice acting vets — includes Diedrich Bader (American Housewife) as Batman; Alan Tudyk (Firefly) as both Joker and Clayface; J.B. Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm) as Ivy’s “roommate,” Frank the Plant; Christopher Meloni (Law & Order: SVU) as a hard-drinking Commissioner Gordon; Ron Funches (Undateable) as King Shark; Jim Rash (Community) as Riddler; Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as Lex Luthor; Rahul Kohli (iZombie) as Scarecrow; Sanaa Lathan (The Affair) as Catwoman; Jacob Tremblay (Room) as Damian Wayne/Robin; and James Adomian (BoJack Horseman) as a mercilessly and amusingly mocked Bane.

Season 1 consists of 13 episodes, to release weekly every Friday (a la DC Universe’s Titans and Doom Patrol). But Cuoco in fact had a few of those first entries already in the can once she truly found Harley’s perfect voice.

“After a a few weeks, it became more manic and hysterical, so I wanted to go back and re-record [the earlier episodes] to make sure it was just as badass from the beginning,” Cuoco tells TVLine.

Harley Quinn“I think with any character, especially when on a new show, it takes some getting used to,” she continues, describing voice acting’s unique process. “I’ve perfected certain looks and facial expressions over the years, so this in a way was harder — also because I’m voicing someone as iconic as Harley. And also, my voice is very recognizable, so I didn’t want to force an accent or try to be someone I’m not. I’m ‘Kaley as Harley,’ and accepting that early on enabled me to me free and very authentic.”

But was Cuoco prepared for just how “free” Harley Quinn would be with swear words, cusses, expletives and racy banter? (Episode 2, for example, has a subplot involving Penguin’s nephew’s bar mitzvah and… fingerbanging.) Did any of the dialogue, especially in aggregation, ever give her pause?

“Not for a second,” she asserts with a laugh.

SEAL Team’s Neil Brown Jr. Previews Ray’s Next Run as Bravo 1, Whether He Can Help Jason Ease His Pain https://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/ https://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/#respond Tue, 26 Nov 2019 23:07:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/seal-teams-neil-brown-jr-previews-rays-next-run-as-bravo-1-whether-he-can-help-jason-ease-his-pain/

RELATED STORIES

This Wednesday at 9/8c, CBS’ SEAL Team braves another operation without Jason at the helm. Instead, Ray will again lead the charge as Bravo 1, subbing for his injured brother, as the team ventures into enemy territory — during the light of day — to rescue a downed Marine pilot.

TVLine spoke with series vet Neil Brown Jr. about his character’s bittersweet “promotion,” the dangerous obstacles immediately ahead, and whether Ray can help nudge Jason toward the help he so desperately needs.

TVLINE | Ray made some bold calls last week as Bravo 1. Does he realize they just got by, by the skin of their teeth?
I think they always do. If you see the way they operate, they’re always just a sliver away from it going bad. They just have to take all the information and make the right call. But I think Raymond is well-informed, and more often than not he makes the right call.

TVLINE | Is this current scenario a bit bittersweet for Ray, because it means Jason is on the sidelines?
Absolutely, 100 percent. He’d rather his brother be there with him in any capacity, let alone as team leader. They’ve been working together so long, he’d rather see his best friend and brother walk away on his own decision as opposed to being sidelined. I know that Ray will do his best to lead Bravo in the way that Jason would, albeit a little more cautiously. Jason can be a bit wild, and that’s why they work so well, because Ray will reel it in a bit.

TVLINE | That’s why I loved the point that Ray made in choosing the new guy, because you don’t want two Jasons. You need the balance.
That was his call, and that was one of the reasons why they chose Vic, played by Lucca De Oliveira, over Yoder. Bravo works so well because at the head you have these two guys who both actually think in the same way, but one is more cautious than the other. One thinks about things that the other one doesn’t. It’s like the left and right side of each other’s brain.

SEAL Team Season 3TVLINE | Are we going to get any thoughts from Naima on Ray’s current situation?
Interestingly enough, one of the things that’s causing more pressure on Ray, and on the team as well, is because there’s this warrant officer track that he’s on, and then now he has to run the team. So he’s got all the eyes on him now, and of course there is his home life and Naima, played by Parisa [Fakhri], who is just amazing. There are some things you’ll see in the next few episodes about how they’re dealing with it all, but they’re a power couple and a team within the team that finds their way, no matter what.

TVLINE |  I was pleased to see them come out of the other side of last season  stronger, because it was getting a bit dicey there during that long deployment and with that woman at the bar….
Which was nothing. I think that speaks more to people’s own desires more so than it speaks to Raymond. As soon as he opened his eyes up and realized that this woman was smitten with him, that was the last time he spoke to her. He pulled his hand away and was like, “No, no, no,” and then was mad at himself for letting it get that far. Some guys’ thing is cheating on their wives; Ray would never do that. His was trying to quell his anger, and because of that anger he had a cloudy mind. He was talking to someone outside of his marriage and outside of his team because he was very embarrassed about how he was feeling, and very angry about how he was feeling. He didn’t want the people he loved the most to have to worry about him or feel that or didn’t even think that they cared. The journey of faith can be these huge peaks and valleys, and that’s what that was.

TVLINE | Yeah, Ray was quite unsettled last season by that guy not getting his last rites — which was an interesting beat for the show to play.
Yeah. I mean at a certain point he blamed Jason for it, but then he blamed himself, and then he blamed God. These guys work so very hard and they give their lives and their bodies and their minds to the job. For someone like Ray, who has the only good home life, it’s very difficult to balance all that. And one thing that keeps Ray right is his faith. Before that, he was a wild guy, so when that cracks, it’s like, “Oh, my God.” What happens then? But he found his way back, and he and Naima have had tons of conversations outside of the ones we’ve seen, and they found their way back to happiness and joy.

SEAL Team 3x08TVLINE | Give me a sense of the challenges that the Ray-led team will face this week, as they try to rescue a pilot who has fallen into enemy territory.
They’re going into, as you say, enemy territory, but they’re typically coming in under the cover of night. One of the most dangerous things — and the reason why I liked last season, because it was so dangerous for Ray to be out there in Episode 21 — was because it became daytime and he was alone, and that’s when they’re vulnerable. At night, the SEALS control things because they’re smooth, they’re fast, you won’t know they’re there, but in the daytime they become a target. That’s part of what’s going to play into this next episode. You have an unknown number of enemy combatants and we don’t know the assets that they have…. [Rescuing] the pilot becomes a difficult task, increasingly, as it goes on. There are going to be a lot of obstacles that weren’t expected.

TVLINE | Will there be a specific, difficult call for Ray to make?
There’ll be multiple hard calls to make, because somebody may get in more trouble than we needed them to, than we were prepared for at the time.

Seal Team Season 3 Ray JasonTVLINE | We the viewers have seen Jason just imploding, inside his home, trashing the place…. He’s not dealing with his situation well, at all. Will the team-at-large get an inkling of just how bad a place he is in?
Ray, his best friend, knows exactly how bad he’s got it, but he also knows that his friend throughout the years has had to be dealt with in different ways. Sometimes he has to back away completely, and sometimes he has to step in his friend’s face and tell him like it is, and sometimes he has to just be an open ear. Albeit, with the coming trials of the promotion and having to run the team and then all the stuff they went through last year, it’s become increasingly difficult for Ray to be there for his friend as much as he would like to be. So what Raymond has advocated for, for a few seasons now, is therapy — “You need to talk to someone.”

I think the hope is that Jason will eventually talk to someone and find a way to let go of some of this bottled-up pain, which they all need to do. Ray has that with his wife, and he talks to her. He doesn’t tell her everything or anything like that, but he has a release valve. Jason doesn’t really have that anymore. And if there is a release valve, it’s Ray. So as we go on in the future I think these two brothers will find a way to help each other.

TVLINE | Things so far have been going smoothly with both Captain Lindell in charge and Vic Lopez on the team. Is either of those situations going to start to get a little prickly, a little unpredictable?
Anytime you have a new commander, you’ve got to get used to the way he wants things run. I think Captain Lindell ultimately is a special operator who just wants things done more efficiently and better. He’s actually a guy after Ray’s own heart. The new guy, Vic, is similar to Ray in that way, and that’s why Ray has taken him under his wing, even more so than Jason, who normally does that.  I think those two characters, Lindell and Vic, will add in a bunch of new colors to the painting that is SEAL Team. It’s going to be very interesting how we all navigate that.

TVLINE | Lastly, we just heard the news about SEAL Team cast appearing on a primetime Price Is Right special. Had you ever been on the stage before?
No! And it was a dream come true. You’re looking at it as a kid like, “I’m never going to get there,” and then you’re like, “Oh, God, I’m here. How about that? This is pretty cool.”

TVLINE | What were you most excited to see in person?
The wheel! Everybody wants to get to the wheel, bro. And seeing the audience, which was all [military] veterans…. I’ll tell you, man, I come from a military family, and I really love what CBS has done and is continuing to do, particularly as it pertains to SEAL Team, with how they treat and care about veterans, and how right we try to get the show for the community and even for regular military and bringing in their family, because it’s not just the vets who serve. It’s the families who serve. Just seeing how much they love this show brings us to tears consistently, because it feels right.

It feels like a marginalized part of our society that is just treated sometimes as a tool, and we just want to show that there’s so much more than that. You have these beautiful, bright, amazing people who are the ultimate servants to this country. I’m just really humble to be doing it.

NCIS EP Talks Repeated Ziva Teases, Whether They’re Setting Up a Return https://briefnews.eu/ncis-ep-talks-repeated-ziva-teases-whether-theyre-setting-up-a-return/ https://briefnews.eu/ncis-ep-talks-repeated-ziva-teases-whether-theyre-setting-up-a-return/#respond Sun, 21 Apr 2019 19:06:46 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/ncis-ep-talks-repeated-ziva-teases-whether-theyre-setting-up-a-return/ What’s the funny thing about hope…? Oh yeah — “when she gets into your blood, she never leaves you.”

But should NCIS fans hold out hope for a flesh-and-blood return by the presumed-dead (but surely alive) Ziva David?

In a mid-February episode of the CBS drama, it was revealed that as an NCIS agent, Ziva would secretly follow up on cold cases while tucked away in a backyard shed she leased from a kindly woman. The tag of that episode planted a big seed in Agent Ellie Bishop’s head by strongly indicating that Ziva is alive (as previously hinted in Michael Weatherly’s final episode).

In the two months since, Bishop has been tug-tug-tugging at that storyline thread, oh-so-subtly taking digs at Gibbs for keeping secrets, or, in a more bizarre homage, trying to revive a sad plant found in Ziva’s secret cabin. That most recent C-story culminated in Bishop getting the landlady’s OK to use the cabin, seeing as Ziva paid its rent far in advance.

Can NCIS viewers expect Bishop to stay on Ziva’s scent?

“It’s such a great thread, I’d hate to leave it on the table,” co-showrunner Steve Binder told TVLine as part of our May Sweeps Preview Q&A. “But like anything, we don’t just want to tease the tease. If we do pull at it, we’re going to have something interesting behind it, and not just keep doing the same beat over and over again.”

But just how “interesting” could this subplot get? What could it possibly be building toward? As TVLine noted for the Binder and co-showrunner Frank Cardea, while Cote de Pablo might theoretically be available for an encore — despite having abruptly exited the series during its Summer 2013 hiatus, she told TVLine that if Ziva were alive, “Under the right circumstances, it could definitely be explored” — it’d be odd to bring back the former Mossad agent while true love Tony DiNozzo’s portrayer, Weatherly, is busy headlining another season of Bull (which admittedly remains on the renewal bubble).

NCIS Ziva Alive“I don’t want to say ‘the sky’s the limit,’ but given that she’s been gone for years, there’s a lot that could have happened that could be fodder for us,” Binder allows, “even if she’s not necessarily present.”

“We’re always trying to think about what the audience wants to see, what we want to see, what makes sense, what’s interesting…,” Binder continues. “We’re talking about all of it, all of the time. And we’ll see what sticks.”

  • Medium isn’t commenting on whether or not Jeff Bezos violated its terms of service with his astonishing post on Thursday.
  • The online publishing site also won’t say whether Bezos gave it a heads up before he published it.
  • But Medium did confirm that, no matter how many people like his post, he won’t get paid for it.

When Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos decided to accuse David Pecker, the CEO of National Enquirer’s parent company, of blackmail on Thursday, he chose an interesting way to do it: a post on Medium.

Medium is a blogging media site founded by Evan Williams, one of the founders of Twitter. Bezos also tweeted about his blog post, to his 834,000 followers, so that’s a double score for technologies created by Williams and used by Bezos in this drama. (Just in case you haven’t been following closely: intimate photos and text messages between Bezos and the woman he was having an affair with were obtained by the Enquirer, which published some of the trove and threatened to publish others).

  • The annual fee for the Business Platinum® Card from American Express is going up from $ 450 to $ 595 per year.
  • New benefits include credits at WeWork and Dell and increased benefits from hotel stays.
  • With the higher fee, the card may be even more valuable to some cardholders, but others may want to look elsewhere for a rewards card with great benefits and a lower cost.
