The US Army is moving foward on next-generation concealment technology to ensure that American soldiers can hide in plain sight.
Fibrotex has built an Ultra-Light Camouflage Netting System that can be used to conceal soldier’s positions, vehicles, tanks and aircraft. The new “camouflage system will mask soldiers, vehicles and installations from state-of-the-art electro-optical sensors and radars,” the company said Thursday in a press release sent to Business Insider.
Fibrotex has been awarded a contract to supply this advanced camouflage to conceal troops from night vision, thermal imaging, radar and more.
Fibrotex USA
The new program aims to replace outdated camouflage that protect soldiers in the visible spectrum but not against more advanced, high-end sensors. ULCANS “provides more persistent [infrared], thermal & counter-radar performance,” Fibrotex explained.
The Army has awarded Fibrotex a 10-year indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract valued at $ 480 million. Full-scale production will begin next year at a manufacturing facility in McCreary County, Kentucky, where the company expects to create and secure hundreds of new jobs in the coming years.
“Today, more than ever, military forces and opposition groups are using night vision sensors and thermal devices against our troops,” Eyal Malleron, the CEO of Fibrotex USA, said in a statement.
“But, by using Fibrotex’s camouflage, concealment and deception solutions, we make them undetectable again, allowing them to continue keeping us safe.”
Fibrotex USA
The result came from roughly two years of testing at the Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center, where new technology was tested against the Army’s most advanced sensors.
Fibrotex noted that the netting is reversible, creating the possibility for two distinctly different prints for varied environments. And while outsiders can’t see through the netting, those on the inside have an excellent view of their surroundings, as can be seen in the picture above.

The Mobile Camouflage Solution (MCS) takes concealment to another level, as “the MCS provides concealment while the platform is moving,” the company revealed. Business Insider inquired about the secret sauce to blend in moving vehicles with changing scenery, but Fibrotex would only say that their “technology combines special materials, a unique fabric structure and a dedicated manufacturing process.”
ULCANS and its relevant variants are based on “combat-proven technologies” designed by the Israel-based Fibrotex Technologies Ltd., the parent company for Fibrotex USA, over the past two decades. The companies products have been specifically modified to meet the needs of the Department of Defense.
“We have more than 50 years of experience, with thousands of hours in the field and a deep understanding of conventional and asymmetric warfare. The U.S. Army tested our best camouflage solutions and the camouflage repeatedly demonstrated the ability to defeat all sensors known to be operating in the battlefield and throughout the electromagnetic spectrum,” Malleron explained.

“Just as the terrorists in Jarabulus and Al-Bab weren’t able to escape elimination, the terrorists in Afrin and Manbij won’t be able to escape the bitter end awaiting them, either,” Erdogan said during a regional party congress speech in the heartland town of Corum.
“Our heroic soldiers made history yesterday in the area of Operation Euphrates Shield [a previous offensive in 2016-17]. They are making history today in Afrin. And they will make history tomorrow wherever there are terrorists along our borders,” the Turkish President told party loyalists hours later on Sunday, during an address in nearby Amasya.
Erdogan restated Turkey’s plans to create a 30 km security zone within Syria’s borders, declaring the area would be used to house Syrian refugees who have spilled into the neighboring country since the start of the conflict in 2011.
Prior to last week’s operation, Kurdish groups had controlled around a quarter of Syria’s territory, much of it along the 800 km-long Turkish border, with gains made at the expense of Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), which it helped defeat in the country with aid from the United States.
On Saturday, Erdogan said Turkish-led forces had killed almost 400 Kurdish militiamen since the start of Operation Olive Branch on January 20. With a growing number of unconfirmed testimonies and photos of civilian casualties, Erdogan dismissed international criticism of the operation, insisting the operation is aimed at destroying “terrorists.”
Operation Olive Branch has strained an already tense relationship between Ankara and Washington, which had previously backed the creation of a Kurdish-led border force inside Syria that it said would stop IS from rising up again.

“Are you home?” reads the message I’ve received at the end of many late Saturday nights in Berkeley. In college, I lived on the quiet side of campus, a 0.8 mile and 15-minute walk away from the hubbub of south side and my close friends’ apartment. I can’t count the number of times this situation has happened: It’s 2 a.m. and as I leave their apartment, I promise to message them as soon as I got home, only to forget to the minute my weary body enters the safety and warmth of my house.
One summer, I worked until midnight at a hotel off-campus. Once my mom found out about the late hours, she always texted me asking if I had gotten home safely. Even if I wasn’t walking, there had been assaults at the very night shuttle stop I often waited at.
With its share of robberies and assaults at all times of the day, UC Berkeley wasn’t going to win any campus safety awards anytime soon. The startling reality of campus and city safety everywhere prompts concern about getting from one destination to another, especially when traveling alone. This worry and stress affects not only the traveler, but also the traveler’s loved ones.
Wearable company Revolar, whose mission statement is “Safety for all,” seeks to combat these concerns and make it easier to send and receive help in unsafe situations.
Co-founders Jacqueline Ros and Andrea Perdomo drew from personal experiences in building Revolar. Ros developed the idea for safety wearables after her sister was assaulted as a teenager and she found herself wishing her sister had been able to simply press a button to send for help. Perdomo’s family moved to the US from Colombia after her grandmother was kidnapped for eight months, and Perdomo always wondered what she could have done to prevent the kidnapping.
Revolar’s newest product, the Instinct, wants to empower users to be proactive about their safety. Whether you’re living alone, going on a run, or going out at night, the Instinct will help put both you and your loved ones at ease.
Because it’s a relatively new introduction to the safety app and device space, we’re going to walk you through what it’s like to set up and use the device. You’ll be able to see the perspectives of all parties involved and decide for yourself whether the Revolar Instinct is for you.
The initial setup and getting accustomed to how the device and app work can take a little time, but it’s a worthwhile investment in the long run. You can purchase it on Amazon for $ 79.99. It’s a small price to pay for your personal safety.
You must own an iOS or Android device and download the Revolar app. I went through registration and synced the Instinct to my app.
You can add up to five contacts to receive notifications. On the left is what your contact will see when you invite them to Revolar. The right is what your own contacts list will look like.
There are three types of check-ins:
I liked that these were pretty intuitive and discreet. The clicks are easy to remember and perform when holding the device on my key lanyard. The Yellow and Red Alerts send silent vibrating feedback to let you know the alert has been triggered.
The app provides examples of messages. On the right are the messages I ended up writing.
My location was a little off, but this was most likely due to my own phone’s location calibration rather than the app, since the app is simply using Google Maps.
My contact now has the option to call me. He also received a notification when I turned the Yellow Alert off, essentially sending an “all-clear” message.
This is a good feature to employ to get out of an awkward or potentially unsafe situation, like a date you’re getting bad vibes from.

The debris of destroyed houses, schools and hospitals have turned Iraq’s second largest city into an urban graveyard after the US-led coalition and Iraqi government forces launched the offensive in October to liberate the city.
With explosions and gunfire heard in the distance, RT’s crew saw US-led coalition jets heading to and from Mosul every 5–10 minutes on Tuesday night. They also witnessed an Iraqi helicopter launching missiles at IS targets on Wednesday and heard chilling stories of how Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) terrorists continue to use civilians as human shields during airstrikes.
But instead of organizing humanitarian corridors for civilian to leave the city, the Iraqi government, as noted in the Amnesty International report earlier this week, has been urging Mosul residents to stay inside. Unfortunately for many of them, the perceived safety of their homes became their graves, as Iraqi and US forces continue to target their houses.
“Hundreds of civilians have been killed by airstrikes inside their homes or in places where they sought refuge after following Iraqi government advice not to leave during the offensive to recapture the city of Mosul from the armed group calling itself Islamic State (IS),” Amnesty said Tuesday in their detailed report based on witness’ testimonies.
The city itself and the refugee camp near Mosul are full of people whose houses were hit or destroyed just after they ran away ignoring government advice.
“When we were in our home, it was hit by a shell. We went to my parent’s house, and it was hit by a rocket. Wherever we went, we’d be bombed. I heard an airstrike destroyed our home,” one woman with a child told RT.
“Why is there no precision here? Air strikes are hitting us and Daesh is a small mouse, why are they bombing the city? The city is gone,” Mosul resident Abu Sayif told RT’s Ruptly video agency. “Have no mercy, no mercy, airstrikes are very bad.”
“This is the bombing, they are destroying everything,” local resident named Akram told Ruptly.
Others on the ground in Mosul have complained to RT that IS continue to use civilians as human shields during daily airstrikes, terrorizing residents and preventing anyone from leaving the western Mosul.
“IS hurt us a lot, they starved us; there is no water to drink, there is no gas, there is no food,” said Abdlrazaq Abdalkarem Qasim a Mosul resident.
“There are 4 or 5 families that can’t come out, the fighting is weakened. These guys [the Iraqi army] keep fighting, they can´t beat them but they [Daesh] are using a lot of snipers,” said Basim Muhammad Jasim, another local of Mosul.

“We are concerned about the pattern of civilian casualties which has been happening since the start of the operation [on October 17],” Donatella Rovera, AI’s senior crisis response adviser who carried out field investigations in Mosul, told RT. “Amnesty International is concerned that there is disproportionate use of force and this could constitute war crimes.”
Rovera told RT that the US coalition is failing to undertake “all possible and feasible precautions to minimize civilian casualties,” especially when it comes to cases where civilian structures are destroyed.
“The use of munitions and tactics at times are causing civilian casualties — notably in situations where ISIS fighters are on the roof of houses — large munitions have been used which have destroyed those houses and killed the civilians in the house,” Rovera explained on Tuesday.
Following Amnesty’s report, the Pentagon admitted that its air campaign in Mosul “probably had a role” in the mounting civilian death toll in the city.
“If these innocents were killed by the coalition, it was an unintentional accident of war,” Lieutenant General Steve Townsend the commander of the Combined Joint Task Force-Operation Inherent Resolve said Tuesday, as the UN Human Rights chief announced that at least 307 people have been killed and 273 wounded in just over a month in Mosul.
The US insists that no more than 200 civilians have been killed in coalition airstrikes in Mosul, but the UK-based monitoring group Airwars says the number could be more than 10 times higher.
Some 400,000 civilians are still trapped in the Old City of Mosul, which is held by IS militants. They are facing food and electricity shortages, a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Iraq earlier told Reuters, adding that between 8,000 and 12,000 people flee the city daily.
Barry Habib, the founder and CEO of MBS Highway, says the hottest real estate markets in the United States have something unique in common. “I don’t know what the reason is on this,” says Habib, “but wherever marijuana is legal, all of those markets are on fire… it’s Seattle, it’s Portland, it’s Denver—these are the hottest markets!”
In a wide-ranging interview with RiskHedge’s Jonathan Roth, Habib also addresses the impact he believes a rumored interest rate hike later this month will have on the US real estate market.
“When you look at the overall environment, the levels of inventory are so darn low,” explains Habib. “We hear it everywhere—I speak around the country; my finger is really on the pulse—the biggest complaint is such low inventory. And, at the same time, the demand is very high.”
Recently awarded the Crystal Ball Award by Zillow for his accurate real estate forecasting record, Habib isn’t shy about discussing ideas that have yet to hit the mainstream. Despite the market’s anticipation that interest rates will slowly rise over time, in the interview, Habib lays out a realistic scenario where rates could actually decline.
“If the Fed becomes overly aggressive in hiking rates… and they start to drain money out of the stock market, interest rates could actually decline,” says Habib. “If they’re perceived to be really combatting inflation to where inflation moves a bit lower, interest rates could actually—as crazy as it sounds—decline in an environment where the Fed is hiking and where they’re either close to the curve or ahead of the curve.”
Despite many observers seeing President Trump moving the Federal Reserve in a more hawkish direction, Habib isn’t convinced.
“It’s interesting with Trump because sometimes he tends to be the Trump who gets things riled up and talks about how critical he’s been of the Fed,” explains Habib. “But then as President, maybe it’s not in his legacy’s best interest to be the President that appoints such a hawkish voting Fed group that they really take the punch bowl away, perhaps a little too early, on the stock market.”

]]>Void of any advanced electronic tech, the Simpresso is comprised solely of a water chamber, an attachable espresso cup, and a lid with a built-in, hand-operated crank which generates pressure to craft the espresso. When using the crank, the device generates pressure from 15 to 19 bars (roughly 217 to 275 PSI) which allow it to continuously produce high-quality espresso. Sized at 8-inches tall and 2.5-inches wide, the Simpresso is no bigger than a traditional portable coffee mug or Thermos.
“Simpresso is a new portable espresso machine concept, which produces high-quality espresso anywhere, anytime,” said Simposh, the device’s creators, on its Kickstarter page. “Simposh has spent years researching and developing the portable espresso maker with more than 10 designs and a lot of effort on improving the product after each testing mock-up. Ultimately, we produced the final product shown here as the innovative Simpresso Portable Espresso Maker.”
To craft a batch of ported espresso, owners need to simply fill the Simpresso with hot water, pack the reusable capsule with ground coffee of their choice, and then attach the capsule to the bottom of the device. When they are ready to whip up a cup of java, a few cranks of the Simpresso’s handle pumps out a batch into its cup. If all was prepared correctly — and the machine works, of course — then the finished product is none other than a piping hot serving of espresso.

For early backers, Simposh offers its Simpresso device for just $ 42 — though there were only three of these left at the time of writing. After the early backer deal runs out, interested buyers have the option of purchasing a Simpresso for $ 48, or two for $ 84. With eight days left in the campaign, Simposh has amassed just shy of $ 22,000 in funding.
