Warner Bros. is so disappointed in the box office performance of Justice League that they’re changing up the way they handle their superhero movies going forward. The movie wasn’t nearly as divisive as Batman v Superman, but even those who appreciated Justice League‘s bizarre blend of tones and defend the movie can’t ignore that the movie failed to make the money a blockbuster of that size and cost should make.
Some diehard fans are convinced that if only director Zack Snyder‘s director’s cut could be released, the film would be seen in its originally-intended glory – without the contributions of Joss Whedon, who stepped in to direct reshoots after Snyder left the project due to a family tragedy. Now, a new rumor indicates that a Justice League director’s cut might be available on home video, but it won’t be the famed Snyder cut: if it happens, the rumor claims it’ll be an extended cut of the theatrical version overseen by Whedon.
The rumor – and again, we want to stress this is a rumor – comes from IGN and Splash Report writer Mario F. Robles (via The Playlist), who claims to have heard about a potential Henry Cavill Superman trilogy coming to Blu-ray:
For the home release of #JusticeLeague, WB is mulling over packaging it as a #Superman Trilogy, alongside MOS and BvS. And here's the kicker:
It would include an Extended Cut of JL.
BUT!
It'd be an extended version of the theatrical cut. Not Snyder's cut.
— Mario-F. Robles (@I_Am_MFR) December 6, 2017
Not long ago, someone who supposedly worked on the visual effects team for Justice League explained that a Zack Snyder cut of the movie doesn’t exist. I’ve written about this before, but let me recap:
Snyder hired Whedon to rewrite the screenplay before he had to step down as director, and Whedon directed the reshoots with an eye toward making them fit with the work Snyder had already done. (Whether or not he was successful in doing so is up for interpretation.) Secondly, a Snyder cut would require Warner Bros. to spend even more money on unfinished visual effects for the shots that didn’t make it into the theatrical cut, and since the movie’s budget (rumored to be north of $ 300 million) is a big part of why it has underperformed financially, it doesn’t make sense for the studio to spend millions more on VFX in the hopes of making a comparatively small amount back on home video sales of a Snyder cut from hardcore fans.
I don’t imagine an extended edition is going to differ greatly from the theatrical cut, because, as I stated above, paying for visual effects work is extremely expensive, and WB has already dropped a rumored $ 300 million on Justice League as it is. Still, the notion of fans clamoring for an extended edition of Justice League and the folks at Warner Bros. saying, “Sure, here you go…but there’s a twist!” seems like a total troll move on their part. Will the extended edition simply include some footage and scenes that Snyder already shot and completed that we’ve seen in early trailers? That seems like the most likely practical explanation, if they’re even actually considering this in the first place.
Nothing will ever make me feel sorry for the ride-or-die Zack Snyder fanboys that resort to threatening people on the internet over their opinions about movies. But if WB were to release a non-Snyder extended cut of Justice League on home video, I’d almost feel a tiny bit bad for them. Almost.

We’re now living in a post-Justice League world. After years in development and a troubled production that saw original director Zack Snyder step away due to a family tragedy and be replaced by Joss Whedon, the movie finally hit theaters this past Friday and pulled in $ 94 million at the box office. That’s a lot of money, but contextually, it’s a disappointment for WB executives; $ 94 million is the lowest opening weekend haul of any movie in the DC cinematic universe thus far.
Many fans aren’t thrilled with the final product, and now a petition is circling that is begging WB to release a Justice League Zack Snyder cut on home video. We’ll take a quick look at that below, and also examine why Whedon’s writing credit contradicts a recent report about the extent of his involvement.
A fan named Roberto Mata in Puerto Rico wrote an impassioned request imploring WB to release Snyder’s director’s cut on home video, along with Junkie XL’s original score. (Junkie XL was replaced by composer Danny Elfman in the weeks leading up to the release.) The petition’s mission statement is nearly incomprehensible, but that didn’t stop over 60,000 people from signing it at the time of this writing.
Yes, it’s true that Snyder left the movie after his daughter’s tragic death, but the people who signed this petition may have forgotten that Snyder brought Whedon on to rewrite sections of the movie before he stepped back. It’s not like a “Zack Snyder cut” – if such a thing could even conceivably be cobbled together – would be all that different than the final version; Whedon directed what Snyder would have directed, and he attempted to stick with Snyder’s visual aesthetic. It’s not like a new guy came in, took over, and attempted to wrestle the tone away from where it was originally heading.
Snyder received sole director’s cut on the movie, while Whedon ended up receiving a “screenplay by” credit. Last week, one of the film’s producers mentioned that Whedon’s involvement comprised about 15-20% of the movie, but that “screenplay by” credit seems to indicate that’s not quite accurate. We’ve already written about why Whedon didn’t receive a directing credit (despite the months of work he did on the film), and according to Indiewire, he never requested directing or writing credit on the film at all.
But the Writers Guild of America stepped in to determine the final writing credits on the movie, and after going through arbitration process, they determined that Whedon’s contribution was equal to at least 33% of the final script. Indiewire has a nice breakdown of exactly what that means and how it applies here, but the short version is that Whedon was judged to have contributed “changes of a substantial and original nature” that went “to the root of the drama” in the movie. It’s a fascinating read, and I’d recommend checking out the full article.
Meanwhile, Justice League is in theaters right now. Check out our spoiler review here.

Last night, Marvel Studios opened its doors to the press for the first time on the Disney lot and studio president Kevin Feige provided a number of quotes about a myriad of topics, including former Marvel stalwart Joss Whedon’s move to Warner Bros. and DC with Batgirl, Feige’s plans for Spider-Man’s future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and a lot more. But I know you don’t have the time to sift through the internet to track down all those quotes, so I did it for you. Read on to learn about the most relevant Kevin Feige updates.
To make this easy, let’s group Feige’s comments into categories. First up:
The Avengers director Joss Whedon made headlines a few weeks ago when it was announced that the filmmaker jumped from Marvel to DC and will be writing and directing a Batgirl film for Warner Bros. Whedon famously butted heads with Feige during the production of Avengers: Age of Ultron, but it turns out there’s no bad blood between them. In fact, Whedon gave Feige a heads up about Batgirl before the news dropped.
“He called. A couple months ago, which he didn’t have to do and was super cool of him and super nice of him,” Feige told THR. “And we couldn’t be more supportive. We want to see a Joss Whedon Batgirl film be awesome.”
Making Ultron nearly broke Whedon as a filmmaker, but at least it sounds like the two men are still on speaking terms. And we’re right there with Feige on this one: we want to see an awesome Batgirl movie from Whedon, too.
Meanwhile, what does Feige think about his Thanos, Josh Brolin, heading over to Fox to star as Cable in Deadpool 2? He says Brolin is “killing it” as Thanos, but Feige also isn’t opposed to seeing his actors work elsewhere.
“We don’t have anything written into our contracts about other roles that people can do,” Feige told THR. “Indiana Jones and Han Solo are the same person … it hasn’t been a problem. And I think Thanos and Cable are two very different characters.”
He also told ComicBook that “I think he’ll make one hell of a Cable,” so it sounds like he understands the potential of that particular piece of casting. Besides, how much could Brolin possibly be in the MCU following the second Infinity War movie? Thanos has gotta go down, right?
Speaking of what happens after the two-part Infinity War, the mega-producer spoke on a number of different aspects about the studio’s plans for the future.
What about Spider-Man? Feige confirmed that the webslinger will return for the second part of Infinity War and a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming, but, “That’s as far as it goes for now.” That lines up with comments from producer Amy Pascal, who has hinted that unless the co-production deal for Spidey movies gets renewed between Disney, Marvel, and Sony, the character will revert back to a strictly Sony property in the future. As for the spinoffs Sony is developing (Venom, Black Cat/Silver Sable, etc.), Marvel isn’t involved in those. “We had a very particular plan about Spidey himself,” Feige said, presumably alluding to the character’s reintroduction in Civil War and involvement in the Infinity War films.
In other post-Infinity War news, James Gunn took to Facebook yesterday to announce that he’ll be back to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which takes place after the events of Infinity War and “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond.” But that may not be the last we see of Gunn’s involvement in the MCU. Feige explained:
“I think James in particular has an amazing connection with these characters and with this cosmic world. So he, I think, could easily oversee additional stories beyond Vol. 3,” Feige said to THR. “And I think has them and just continues to come up with them, which is cool. All of our core writers and filmmakers know what we are doing in other places and help give input on the various projects.”
I’d love to see Gunn mix smaller films in between big blockbuster event films, but there’s no denying he has a wonderful control of the tone of the cosmic side of the MCU. He’d certainly be a welcome addition to anything in the studio’s Phase 4 and beyond.
The only other quote worth commenting on was when Feige spoke about how Marvel hasn’t needed to change to appease foreign box office.
“An amazing thing happened as we started making movies: the world started responding to the movies we were making and therefore we didn’t have to change or cater them in any way outside our own natural instincts,” said Feige. “When it comes to marketing, you’ll find us taking different tactics. But when it comes to the actual film itself, I cannot think of a single example where we altered anything, made a decision based on trying to appeal to the ‘global market.’”
Feige normally seems like a pretty on-the-ball kind of guy, so it’s supremely bizarre that he would say this when the fact that Iron Man 3 added footage to appease Chinese audiences made international news back in 2013. That additional footage wasn’t essential to the plot and was little more than a glorified commercial, but considering Feige seems like one of the biggest straight-shooters in the industry, it’s so damn strange that he would gloss over this like it didn’t even happen.
What do you think about Feige’s updates? Which of his quotes did you find the most surprising?

This week’s show details another banner week in the world of entertainment (is there any other kind?), with a slew of new trailers, HBO news, box office bombs, and a comic book betrayal of the highest order from one of today’s best filmmakers.
More: Between the Streams: ‘Justice League’ trailer, Han Solo news, Deadpool 2
We’ll begin today’s show with that tantalizing last bit. While the DC cinematic universe has repeatedly shown signs of turmoil and disarray (not to mention critical malevolence), fans of the Marvel side of the comic book coin may take heart in the latest plan for the series. According to reports, Avengers director Joss Whedon is currently in talks with Warner Bros. to direct, write, and produce a Batgirl movie. The lack of strong female heroines in the current comic book movie renaissance has not gone overlooked by either Disney’s Marvel or the DC execs at Warner Bros., with the former working on a female-led Captain Marvel film starring Brie Larson, and the latter already at work on a Suicide Squad spinoff (for better or for worse) starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, alongside Wonder Woman’s solo film.
The new film will reportedly be based on the “New 52” version of Batgirl, according to Business Insider, which sees Commissioner Gordon’s daughter Barbara Gordon taking on the cowl and cape after she’s brutally attacked by the Joker. Whether or not this would include any appearances by Ben Affleck’s Batman or other characters from within Zack Snyder’s critically maligned films is not yet known, though one would assume Jared Leto’s glam-rock Joker would be the assailant that turned Gordon to the cape. In any event, it should be interesting to watch this unfold, and Whedon’s name alone brings hope of some stability and creative character building finally landing in DC’s cinematic sandbox.
Elsewhere, the weekend box office looks like a bit of a snoozer, with critics praising the eye-candy but dissing the hollow storyline of Ghost in the Shell, the manga-based film starring Scarlet Johansson. The only other big budget film stars Alec Baldwin as a talking baby (you can’t make this stuff up folks). Like last week, we’re recommending another stay-at-home weekend when it comes to movie watching — either that or we’d point those looking for a night out to catch up with Kong: Skull Island or the incredible Jordan Peele horror-comedy Get Out. Just stay the hell away from CHIPs. Seriously.
There’s plenty of other cool news to discuss this week, including the impending return of some of HBO’s best originals. There were new promos for the latest seasons of Game of Thrones and Silicon Valley, as well as news that Curb Your Enthusiasm’s much-anticipated ninth season has wrapped shooting. In addition, True Detective fans were given some hope of another installment of the crime anthology, with talk that David Milch (NYPD Blue, Deadwood) could be teaming up with series creator Nic Pizzolatto for a third season of the show.
Perhaps the coolest thing we saw this week, however, was the new trailer for the feature version of one of Stephen King’s scariest novels, It. Bill Skarsgard looks positively petrifying as the clown Pennywise, while impressive-looking showings from child actors Finn Wolfhard (Mike from Stranger Things), Jaeden Lieberher (Midnight Special), and others make this film look even more intriguing than we’d anticipated.
In addition, we’ll talk about new trailers for War for the Planet of the Apes and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the Venom movie’s possible horror twist, and new plans to make sure the Oscars don’t get ruined next year. So join us live today at 2 p.m. PT, or take our podcast along by subscribing via one of the links above!
