Wile Facebook and Instagram already have a number of paid features that cater to creators, like Stars, paid events and various subscription products, it sounds like the new division at Meta will be separate from those initiatives. (Of note, Meta had pledged not to take a cut of creator earnings until 2023.)
It’s not clear what type of paid features might come out of the effort, but Meta’s VP of monetization John Hegeman told The Verge the company is keeping a close eye on its industry peers. Twitter, Snapchat and Telegram have all recently launched monthly subscriptions that unlock exclusive features and other in-app perks for paid subscribers.
Paid features could help Meta find new sources of non-advertising revenue. The company’s multibillion-dollar advertising business has taken a significant hit of late due to iOS privacy changes and an economic downturn that’s also affected its competitors.

WhatsApp has achieved its widespread global popularity thanks to its multi-platform support, secure encryption, and wide array of communication features. But the app isn't for everyone, and you might be looking for a WhatsApp alternative that mimics many of the best aspects of the app. Here are seven of the best alternatives to WhatsApp.
Telegram is a popular messaging app that offers voice, video, and text chat along with a mix of security options. Voice calls are automatically encrypted end-to-end, for example, and the app offers a secret chat mode in which your texts are also end-to-end encrypted, plus have a self-destruct timer. Routine texts aren't as secure, though. It's also one of the few apps that lets you lock the app itself, so if someone gets physical access to your phone, they still can't read your messages in Telegram. It's free for iPhone, Android, and even runs in a browser.
Dave Johnson
If you're looking for the strongest security in a WhatsApp alternative, Signal is probably what you need. The app leans hard into privacy with complete end-to-end encryption for voice, video, and text conversations when you chat with other Signal users. And the company behind Signal is a US-based non-profit organization that has no profit incentive to sell your data. You can set messages to self-destruct as well. On the other hand, the app is missing a sense of fun you might be looking for; there are no stickers or built-in GIFs, for example. It's available for free for both iPhone and Android.
Dave Johnson
While most messaging apps are free, Threema is not — it costs $ 5 on both iPhone and Android (and you can use it in a web browser as well). In return, you get complete end-to-end encryption for voice, video, and text messages, as well as file exchanges. It's also one of the very few apps which does not require you to sign up or confirm your account using your phone number, making it highly anonymous. You might also appreciate some of the extra features, like the ability to create polls and surveys, as well as search for images using natural language.
Facebook Messenger is an incredibly popular messaging app thanks to its connection to Facebook, and it's available for free for both iPhone and Android (plus you can use it in a browser). It includes all the basics, such as voice, video, and text messaging, as well as stickers and GIFs, if you are interested in that sort of thing. If you're concerned about privacy and security, though, it's worth noting that while Facebook is rolling out end-to-end encryption to Messenger, that feature is coming slowly and may not be fully available until 2023.

Kik is a little more than just a messaging app; it has a social component that makes it easy to meet new people to chat with, if you're looking for more than just a way to stay in touch with friends and family. Sort of like TikTok, you can join live broadcasts and watch and chat with a large number of other users. And when it comes to getting friends and family online, you can let people scan a QR code found in your profile to get them into a chat instantly. It's free for iPhone and Android, though there are a fair number of ads to contend with. If you value your privacy though, you can sign up with an email address without revealing your phone number.
Part of Microsoft's office productivity suite, Skype has always had something of a business focus, so it might not spring to mind for casual users. It's a full-featured communication app, though, and suitable for both work and recreation. As you'd expect, it can easily do voice, video, and text chats, as well as exchange files. Thanks to a variety of plug-ins, you can record video and voice calls when using Skype on the desktop, though it's also available for iPhone and Android. Perhaps the best reason to use Skype is for its more advanced features, though, like the ability to get real-time language translation, and the fact that you can use Skype to make calls to landline phones (with low international rates).
Viber doesn't have the same name recognition as many other communication apps, but like Skype, it is a solid option if you want an app that can also place calls to mobile phones and landlines in addition to chatting with other app users. Free for iPhone and Android, it has voice, video, and text chat features, and it does this with end-to-end encryption for secure communication.

WhatsApp has hired a grievance officer for India in order to meet a key demand set by the country’s government to halt the spread of fake messages that triggered mob lynchings. In an update to its FAQ section, WhatsApp directs users to lodge complaints through the mobile app, send an email, or write in to grievance officer Komal Lahiri (formerly of Facebook and PayPal), who’s based out of the US. According to her LinkedIn, Lahiri was brought on in March as “senior director of global customer operations and localization.”
Earlier this year, a series of violent mob attacks fuelled by misinformation circulated via WhatsApp left 12 people dead in the span of a month. Since then, the company has taken out ads in newspapers in an effort to educate locals on fake news. It also began labelling forwarded messages and limiting the ability to forward texts to multiple chats at once. India’s other key demands require WhatsApp set up a local presence that meets the country’s laws (which it’s reportedly working on). But it’s thus far refused to track messages as it goes against its policies on privacy and security.

A man allegedly bailed on his own wedding because his bride-to-be spent too much time on WhatsApp and asked for a dowry of ₹65,000,000 ($ 900,000) in return for marrying her.
The bride and her family were waiting for the groom, from the city of Amroha in Uttar Pradesh state, to show up on the day of their wedding on September 5. He failed to arrive and the father of the bride sent his brother to the groom’s house to see what had happened, according to Asian news agency ANI.
It was then the man claimed the woman was “not good” because she spent too much time chatting online.
“We were waiting for the groom’s family. When they did not turn up, we went to their house. The family refused to marry my daughter, alleging that she is not good as she spends too much time on WhatsApp,” the bride’s father is quoted as saying by ANI.
When the bride’s family insisted, the groom apparently demanded a dowry of ₹65,000,000. A police complaint was filed by the bride’s father. An officer is quoted as saying that an investigation is underway and they’ll take action “accordingly.”

WhatsApp is the world’s most popular messaging service, surpassing that of Facebook Messenger, WeChat and Telegram.
According to Statista, a provider of market and consumer data, roughly 1.5billion people use WhatsApp every month as of July 2018.
This compares to just 1.3billion for Facebook Messenger and 1.04billion for WeChat for the same period.
WhatsApp allows users to easily switch between devices and maintain their chats, media and other items by harnessing a backup feature.
This takes advantage of the power of Google Drive’s storage to keep data in the cloud.
Previously the items stored by WhatsApp in a user’s Google Drive counted towards their storage tally.
However, WhatsApp has reached a “new agreement” with the Silicon Valley giant that means chat backups will no longer subtract from the cloud quota.
Google confirmed the change in an email to XDA Developers.
The deal will “come into effect for all users on November 12, 2018”.
Google is advising users to manually back up their WhatsApp content before the date or risk losing precious files.
The tech giant explained “any WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage” once the transition takes place.
This means if users do not fully ensure all of their data, both past and present, is backed up to Google Drive before November 12 they could lose any photos, chat history, video and other media after such time.
In a letter to an XDA Developers reporter, Google said: “Due to a new agreement between WhatsApp and Google, WhatsApp backups will no longer count against Google Drive storage quota.
“However, any WhatsApp backups that have not been updated in more than a year will automatically be removed from storage.
“This policy will come into effect for all users on November 12, 2018, although some users may see the quota benefits earlier.
“To avoid the loss of backups, we recommend that people back up WhatsApp before November 12, 2018.”
Google Drive offers 15GB of free storage to its users – for an increased amount users can pay a monthly fee.
For WhatsApp fanatics to avoid losing data they should back up their device.
To do this users should launch the app and press the icon shaped like bullet points in the top right-hand corner.
The “settings” button should then be pressed, then “chats”.
Then press “chat backup” where users will be given information on the last time data was uploaded to the cloud.
To launch a backup manually, all users have to do is press the “back up” button.
WhatsApp fanatics also have the option to declare whether they want videos to be included in the backup to Google Drive.
WhatsApp cofounder Jan Koum said in April that he planned to leave Facebook, which bought his company for $ 19 billion in 2014. He’s already sold $ 7.1 billion worth of Facebook shares.
But he’s still showing up to the office, The Wall Street Journal reports, to collect one last payday: $ 450 million in stock.See the rest of the story at Business Insider

WhatsApp fans are being warned after security experts revealed a flaw that could spark big bust-ups between you and your friends.
Stats revealed earlier this year showed WhatsApp has over 1.5billion users, with over one billion chat app groups and 65bn messages sent daily.
With such a vast number of communications being sent each and every day it’s unsurprising that scammers try to slip in fake messages to fool users.
Just recently Express.co.uk warned about a fake vouchers scam for Costa Coffee that tries to trick victims into handing over personal details.
But now a new scamming tactic has been discovered which targets what people value most – their friends and family.
Security experts at Check Point have revealed a flaw that has the potential to cause arguments amongst your nearest and dearest.
It enables scammers to intercept and manipulate messages sent in both private and group conversations.
Hackers can alter the text of a WhatsApp user’s reply – essentially putting words in their mouth.

Check Point in a video online outlined how this works in both private and group chats.
In the private chat demonstration one WhatsApp user is the attacker and the other is the victim.
The attacker is able to alter the contents of a victim’s sent message in a forwarded message, making it seem like they wrote something they didn’t.
In the group chat demonstration, however, when multiple people were involved in a conversation the attacker intercepted one particular message.

They could then alter the contents of it in a forwarded message before other people in the chat saw it.
Depending on the contents of the faked message, this could result in huge arguments or panic over fake developments in a victim’s life.
In a post online, Check Point gave examples of how this flaw could be manipulated in different situations.
One potential attack the security firm outlined was ‘change the identity of a sender in a group chat, even if they are not a member of the group’.

WhatsApp users have been alerted that the issue affects private and group chats (Image: GETTY • PIC POSED BY MODEL)
Check Point explained: “In this attack, it is possible to spoof a reply message to impersonate another group member and even a non-existing group member.”
They added: “To impersonate someone from the group, all the attacker need do is catch the encrypted traffic.
“Once the traffic is captured, he can simply send it to an extension which will then decrypt the traffic.”
Check Point went on to explain how this could work in practice.

They said: “For example, we can change the conversation to something else.
“The message with the content ‘Great!’ sent by a member of a group, for instance, could be changed to something else like: ‘I’m going to die, in a hospital right now’ and the participant parameter could also be changed to someone else from the group.”
They added: “In order to make everyone see the new spoofed message the attacker needs to reply to the message he spoofed, quoting and changing that message (‘Great’) in order for it be sent to everyone in the group.”
Check Point also outlined one potential attack where only one victim in a three member group chat (which included an attacker) was receiving faked messages.

But the other person in the chat wasn’t, causing confusion amongst the victims being targeted.
Check Point said this gives “attackers immense power to create and spread misinformation from what appear to be trusted sources”.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, a WhatsApp spokesperson said that the Facebook-owned chat app bans accounts that attempt to make WhatsApp modifications.

The WhatsApp flaw has the potential to cause arguments among friends (Image: GETTY • PIC POSED BY MODEL)
They said: “We carefully reviewed this issue and it’s the equivalent of altering an email to make it look like something a person never wrote.
“This claim has nothing to do with the security of end-to-end encryption, which ensures only the sender and recipient can read messages sent on WhatsApp.
“We take the challenge of misinformation seriously and recently placed a limit on forwarding content, added a label to forwarded messages, and made a series of changes to group chats.
“We ban accounts that attempt to modify WhatsApp to engage in spammy behaviour and we are working with civil society in several countries to educate people about fake news and hoaxes.”
WhatsApp is finally rolling out group video- and voice-calls to its 1.5 billion users around the world. The new feature was first teased by its parent company, Facebook, at its annual F8 developers conference in May, but now it’s ready for prime time.
