‘Amazing footage’: Humpback whale bounds into air soaking gobsmacked tourists (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/amazing-footage-humpback-whale-bounds-into-air-soaking-gobsmacked-tourists-video/ https://briefnews.eu/amazing-footage-humpback-whale-bounds-into-air-soaking-gobsmacked-tourists-video/#respond Tue, 12 Jun 2018 12:23:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/amazing-footage-humpback-whale-bounds-into-air-soaking-gobsmacked-tourists-video/

Whale-watching is not without its perils, as tourists aboard an Australian sightseeing ship discovered when they were drenched by an enormous leaping leviathan that came incredibly close to crushing their boat.

Cruising for marine animals off the coast of Port Macquarie, the tourists certainly got their money’s worth when a massive humpback whale rose from the sea, creating a huge wave.

Footage of the incident has been posted on Facebook by Port Jet Cruise Adventures, the company that ferries spectators around the area, showing how the leaping mammal almost fell on top of the vessel. Luckily enough, nobody was hurt and the splashdown just soaked the stunned tourists.

“Some amazing footage captured by Tash Morton on this afternoon’s whale watch,” the tour company said. “Wave Rider got a wash.”

One social-media user commented under the online video to say she was on the ship at the time. “It was so awesome. I’m at the front of the water splash,” she said.

WATCH: Scary moment WHALE threatens to overturn man in sea kayak – but what happens next? https://briefnews.eu/watch-scary-moment-whale-threatens-to-overturn-man-in-sea-kayak-but-what-happens-next/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-scary-moment-whale-threatens-to-overturn-man-in-sea-kayak-but-what-happens-next/#respond Sun, 27 May 2018 16:30:47 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-scary-moment-whale-threatens-to-overturn-man-in-sea-kayak-but-what-happens-next/

A viral video has emerged of an encounter between a gigantic whale and an unsuspecting man in a kayak.

Taken in English Bay in Vancouver, Canada, the scary footage shows the man getting up close and personal with nature.

It begins with a man, wearing a red and black wet suit and a baseball cap, paddling through the calm sea.

A strip of land can be seen on the horizon, suggesting he is not too far out.

At first, the kayak bobs up and down upon the water, in a serene shot.

But not for long, as the calm soon changes to something astonishing.

We see the hump of a whale appear above the water, very close to the kayak.

The kayaker somehow manages to stay calm, paddling away from the path of the whale.

However, before he can move away, the whale moves closer.

Suddenly, a giant tail fin the length of the boat emerges from the water.

Coming far above the surface of the water, the tail narrowly misses hitting the boat.

The whale then moves underneath the kayak before disappearing out of the shot.

It seems a lucky escape for the man in the kayak, whose boat would surely have been overturned by the huge creature.

The video, shared on media sharing platform imgur, has had over half a million views, and has received 1,262 upvotes.

While the man in the kayak stayed remarkably calm, the same cannot be said for those watching the video on Imgur.

One user commented: “I know they’re peaceful but no way do I want to get near an animal that large in water.” Another commented that the man in the kayak was “lucky to be alive!”.

In a scary video which circulated online last month, holidaymakers flee as a sea monster approaches.

Moving at the speed of lightning, the animal shoots through the crowds, its characteristic fin visible above the water.

Then it circles an unlucky man who is standing some way away from the rest of the group.

For a terrifying moment, it looks like the man is in grave danger of being attacked.

However, it turns out the creature is actually a seal, rather than the shark it appears to be while under the water.

NOAA fisheries open investigation into minke whale deaths https://briefnews.eu/noaa-fisheries-open-investigation-into-minke-whale-deaths/ https://briefnews.eu/noaa-fisheries-open-investigation-into-minke-whale-deaths/#respond Thu, 01 Feb 2018 02:14:11 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/noaa-fisheries-open-investigation-into-minke-whale-deaths/ The US National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration has deemed deaths of minke whales along the east coast last year an ‘Unusual Mortality Event’ (UME).

UME, the designation for an occurrence involving a significant die-off of any marine mammal population has spurred a federal probe, NOAA Fisheries announced Wednesday in a teleconference with reporters.

The investigation will span along the East Coast, from Maine to Florida, as NOAA has responded to a total of 29 incidents involving minke whales along that area.

Ten minke whales were found stranded on shore alive, but in poor health, while another 19 were found stranded and dead. Of the 10 found alive, only one survived. Six of the minke whales were found in Maine waters, eight were discovered in Massachusetts and seven were found in New York, according to NOAA.

Nine of the whales appeared to have died after becoming entangled in fishing gear. Eight died from infectious diseases. Investigators have yet to determine how the animals became sick.

The past two years have been deadly for whales in the Atlantic Ocean’s northwest region. Since January 2016, 62 humpback whales have been discovered dead or in distress on the East Coast. Since January 2017, 18 north Atlantic right whales have been found dead off the East Coast or Atlantic Canada. Investigations into the deaths of these two species of whale were also opened by NOAA last year.

“We’re still going through the analysis of what might be the cause,” Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Program Coordinator for NOAA’s Office of Protected Resources, Teri Rowles, said of the minke whale deaths, Bangor Daily News Outdoors reported.

However, Rowles added that the “mortalities we’ve observed so far are not considered a threat to the population’s sustainability,” according to BDN Outdoors.

As the minke whale now joins the NOAA’s other two whale investigations, officials said they have found no direct correlation between the deaths of the three whale species. Respective investigating teams, though, are sharing information, BDN Outdoors reported.

Killer whale ‘repeats human speech’ – study (AUDIO, POLL) https://briefnews.eu/killer-whale-repeats-human-speech-study-audio-poll/ https://briefnews.eu/killer-whale-repeats-human-speech-study-audio-poll/#respond Wed, 31 Jan 2018 13:18:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/killer-whale-repeats-human-speech-study-audio-poll/

Killer whales have for the first time been recorded apparently imitating human speech. Audio released in a new study captured an orca mimicking words such as “hello” and “bye bye.”

A new study, published Wednesday in the journal ‘Proceedings of the Royal Society B’ and led by the Complutense University of Madrid, found orcas have the ability to learn and mimic human language.

Not just that, researchers also found the creatures can copy unfamiliar sounds produced by other orcas (like blowing a raspberry, for instance).

“History will record that in the second decade of the third millennium, a killer whale uttered the word “hello” to a human,” wrote Luke Rendell, Lecturer in Biology at the University of St Andrews, which also assisted in the study.

While other animals like dolphins, bats, seals, elephants and parrots have already been found to mimic human speech, Rendell says a whale repeating “hello” and other phrases meaningless to the mammals proves “they are capable of one of the core building blocks of language development in humans: vocal learning.”

“Although the ability to copy sounds of individuals of the same species is widespread in birds, it is remarkably rare in mammals and, among primates, is practically exclusive to humans,” read the press release announcing the study.

The team tested a 14-year-old female orca called Wilkie with multiple sounds in different scenarios, including using loudspeakers. Each time the whale’s response was measured with forensic acoustic analysis and Wilkie was reportedly often found to repeat the sound back on the first try.

The team says this display of imitation helps explain how pods of wild killer whales create their own dialect, and how captive whales change their calls to fit in with their new group when moved to different locations.

“The evidence that killer whales can show vocal learning provides us with a missing piece of understanding about their lives in the wild,” Rendell wrote.

Giant dead whale drifts more than 4,000 km from Gibraltar to Egypt (VIDEO) https://briefnews.eu/giant-dead-whale-drifts-more-than-4000-km-from-gibraltar-to-egypt-video/ https://briefnews.eu/giant-dead-whale-drifts-more-than-4000-km-from-gibraltar-to-egypt-video/#respond Mon, 08 Jan 2018 15:13:27 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/giant-dead-whale-drifts-more-than-4000-km-from-gibraltar-to-egypt-video/

A rare 12-meter-long (39ft) fin whale has been found beached at Egypt’s Alexandria on Sunday. It washed up on Roshdy beach, Al Ahram reports.

The dead whale is believed to have come all the way from the Atlantic and drifted to Egypt via the Strait of Gibraltar following a storm. That’s a staggering distance of more than 4,200km.

Fin whales are an endangered species and are the second largest species of mammal after blue whales.

Civil Protection Forces and the Marine Rescue Unit found the whale and carried out tests which revealed its origins and that it weighs four tons (metric).

The whale will be brought to the National Institute of Oceanography and Fisheries (NIOF) for scientific research.

WATCH: Massive whale leaps out from nowhere before CRASHING towards passenger https://briefnews.eu/watch-massive-whale-leaps-out-from-nowhere-before-crashing-towards-passenger/ https://briefnews.eu/watch-massive-whale-leaps-out-from-nowhere-before-crashing-towards-passenger/#respond Thu, 07 Dec 2017 19:47:21 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/watch-massive-whale-leaps-out-from-nowhere-before-crashing-towards-passenger/

While many of us are fascinated by images and videos of whales, it is rare we get a close up view of the magnificent creatures.

However, a viral video from Imgur has shown us just that as a whale makes a shocking appearance from the ocean.

In the video, the user is recording a glittering dark blue sea, on what looks like a fairly windy time of day.

In the background, we can see the mountainous coastline falling up and down, mirroring the unsteadiness of the environment.

The camera person themselves seem to be rising and falling, and is clearly taking the video from a boat on the sea.

We see the waves fall up and down, but do not seem to be disturbed by anything other than a strong breeze.

However, the video takes a surprising turn as the camera pans to the left, and we see a gigantic whale leaping up from the sea.

It jumps into the sky, water flying everywhere, its flying body reaching up metres above the water below.

Then, as fast as it came upwards, the whale turns in the air and belly flops down on to the water surface.

As it strikes the water, it makes a huge splash high into the air, pushing up a towering wave of foamy white water.

For an instant, we get a flash of a small boat’s sail and mast as the video maker loses control, before the video goes black.

We then see a struggle below the water as the passenger is overturned, before it emerges again above the water.

Recently, Imgur user AnotheroneSummer posted drone footage of a huge humpback whale leaping out of the ocean.

At first, just the characteristic pointed nose of the whale peeps out from above the water surface, hinting at the presence below.

The whale leaps out, splashing water around it in every single direction and it moves.

Since the drone was hovering above the water, rather than capturing from a boat, it was able to take the jaw dropping footage without any interruptions.

Why the artist behind Twitter’s Fail Whale thinks you should treat art as a currency https://briefnews.eu/why-the-artist-behind-twitters-fail-whale-thinks-you-should-treat-art-as-a-currency/ https://briefnews.eu/why-the-artist-behind-twitters-fail-whale-thinks-you-should-treat-art-as-a-currency/#respond Fri, 24 Nov 2017 19:01:38 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/why-the-artist-behind-twitters-fail-whale-thinks-you-should-treat-art-as-a-currency/

You may not have heard of Yiying Lu, but chances are you’ve seen her work for some of tech’s most popular companies. She’s the artist behind one of the most iconic images from the beginning of Web 2.0, the Fail Whale, which Twitter adopted to replace the stale 404 page when the service went down frequently in the late 2000s.

For more than a decade, Lu has spent time creating artwork for companies and helping startups add more personality to their brand. VentureBeat had a chance to chat with Lu about not only the impact of the Fail Whale, but also what she did as an Artrepreneur-in-Residence at IDEO Shanghai and why she believes companies should view art as a currency.

A decade of the “Fail”

Lu was raised in Shanghai, China, where she ended up enrolling in a technology-focused high school. It was an unusual setting for a teenager with a fondness for literature but not mathematics. But that experience was critical in getting Lu where she is today, as it helped her understand how engineers think.

She opted to become a designer, citing her love of graphics, art, and colors. “I really value just the notion of how to capture the essence through pictures. I’m really into visual storytelling,” Lu explained. It’s this passion that has helped her guide companies as a consultant and as the creative director for 500 Startups.

“I think the thing I do the best is translating the idea of a company into a very simple and iconic visual language. I’m interested in making stuff that actually communicates a meaning or sends a message,” Lu explained.

The illustration that became the Fail Whale was one Lu originally made for a friend’s birthday card while she was living in Australia. “Initially, I made it an elephant, but I made it into a whale because I was in New South Wales, and also if you dropped a whale into the water, it’ll survive.” But after Lu published the artwork on social media, it caught the attention of folks at Twitter, which licensed the work.

Call it serendipity.

“What surprised me most about [the Fail Whale’s influence] is how many people I was able to connect myself with,” Lu said. “Just to meet all these wonderful creators from around the world and see how they came up with their own interpretations of the original artwork. It’s very surprising because it’s familiar, but it’s also new because it’s somebody else’s creation that was almost like a mashup.”

She shared that her creation led to an homage by the Nyan Cat artist and even a request by comedian Conan O’Brien to do a special version for his late-night talk show.

Had Lu expected her Fail Whale to become a cultural icon?

“Nobody can expect that,” she said. “If you ask anybody who does a startup these days, they probably don’t expect [to be a breakout success] when creating their startup … It was amazing to see how people caught on.”

Lu found her work opening doors to not only celebrities, but also those building some of tech’s biggest products. “That was the moment that I realized that the power of art can really transcend linguistic barriers and a lot of other things,” she said. “I think that was the thing that made me most excited, because if you do it just for business, then you never worry about it. You don’t have your name attached to it. It’s amazing that this all happened.”

The Fail Whale has been adopted by companies in other sectors, such  transportation, and has appeared in offline, real-world displays. “I feel the reason why this resonates with people is because they can read beyond the message. The message itself has become more whimsical and playful. I think, in a way, people need that,” Lu said.

Art as currency

Lu believes art should have an impact beyond simple aesthetics. While marketplaces are increasingly filled with similar offerings from competing companies, what stands apart, in her mind, is the creativity behind a product. But do companies need to employ artists or designers? And what is the difference between the two?

“Artists often work alone. They don’t necessarily go and talk to people, and they are making their own art. It’s a pretty lonely practice,” she explained. “Fundamentally, I’m a designer … If art becomes applied art, suddenly it becomes a design because you’re now actually working to solve somebody else’s problem, not yours.”

As a hybrid between the independent artist and the project-dependent designer, Lu sees herself solving clients’ problems, but in her own way. When working with Microsoft, for example, Lu was commissioned to do four pieces of artwork around the Surface Pro. She needed to create the pieces using the device, but she felt comfortable doing so in her own style.

In a way, she’s pushing for companies to think differently when it comes to design — with more emphasis on individual personality. Whether doing work for the Walt Disney Company, Microsoft, 500 Startups, and hundreds of startups, Lu has always opted to add some flair and fun to her work. She believes that doing so can help separate a company from its competitors.

“You don’t have to be cute or cartoony. This is not why I’m interested. What I’m interested in people saying is that it’s interesting or humorous, it triggers emotion. Because whatever business you’re in, ultimately it’s people using it,” Lu explained. She went on to cite something Alibaba chief executive Jack Ma once said: “It’s not whether you’re business-to-business or business-to-consumer. It’s always people-to-people. At the end of the day, your users are going to be reacting. Why don’t you make it interesting? Why don’t you make it thoughtful?”

Lu referenced Line as an example of design helping drive revenue. In the messaging app space, competition is certainly fierce. So Japan-based Line chose to stand out by using fun characters. The company has done such a good job marketing those characters that there’s even huge much demand for them in markets where the app is blocked. Lu recalled that at one of Shanghai’s largest malls, a Line pop-up store once racked up $ 1 million in revenue just thanks to the characters. “This is the power of art — people actually love the technology, but what also captures their attention is more about these things that can engage with their emotions. That was the reason why Line was so successful,” she said. She also speculated that had Twitter followed suit, it might have found itself in a better position today.

To further share her vision of the role art can play, Lu accepted a position at IDEO Shanghai as its first Artrepreneur-in-Residence, or art-focused Entrepreneur-in-Residence. In this role, she offered counsel to designers on staff, but she was also given free reign to work on whatever inspired her and could therefore inspire others.

As she travels around the world, Lu is convinced that more companies need to enlist the services of artists to reinvigorate stale design and tired approaches. She believes more tech companies should consider bringing on AiRs, in part because artists are able to bring a playful approach to the workplace. “Play can be an amazing catalyst to activate an employee’s creative mind, which helps them to enjoy the working environment and which will help increase their happiness, thereby making them more productive, leading to better company retention, and so on…”

She explains that this shift can be a real catalyst.

“The experience of artists being in a space can really help other people to be more aware that what they’re doing doesn’t define them,” she added. “You are more than your work. I think having artists in the space can keep reminding you that you should be able to enjoy more than what you do.”

Tragic beauty: 30-ton humpback whale washes up on Rio beach (VIDEO, PHOTO) https://briefnews.eu/tragic-beauty-30-ton-humpback-whale-washes-up-on-rio-beach-video-photo/ https://briefnews.eu/tragic-beauty-30-ton-humpback-whale-washes-up-on-rio-beach-video-photo/#respond Thu, 16 Nov 2017 01:02:56 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/tragic-beauty-30-ton-humpback-whale-washes-up-on-rio-beach-video-photo/

The body of a 30-ton humpback whale washed up on Rio de Janeiro’s Ipanema beach on Wednesday, causing a large crowd of sunbathers to gather and take pictures of the tragic creature.

Weighing around 30 tons, the whale was discovered on a stretch of sand between Arpoador peninsula and Ipanema beach. Footage of the incident shows waves crashing up against the giant marine mammal’s carcass. The area had to be cordoned off by local police to prevent people from getting too close.

It is too early to tell how the whale died, said Brazilian biologist Rafael Carvalho of the University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ).

“You cannot say much for now. It is a humpback species, a male, that measures around 13 to 15 meters, and is in a stage of advanced decomposition,” Carvalho told O Globo. “The color is very impaired. He is supposed to be more black with white parts on the stomach.”

A number images of the bizarre incident, including the moment authorities arrived to collect the massive whale carcass, have since appeared on social media.
