Already under pressure due to growing scepticism that the US Federal Reserve will raise rates again this year, driven by soft US inflationary pressures and doubts about the Trump administration’s ability to push through infrastructure and taxation reforms, the latest bout of selling appears to have been as a result of a sharp strengthening in the Chinese yuan earlier in the session.

The USD/CNY briefly fell to as low as 6.4476, leaving the yuan at the strongest level since December 2015.

While the dollar has recovered fractionally, the yuan’s surge helped to lift currencies such as the euro, Australian dollar and Canadian dollar to fresh multi-year highs.

The buck is getting banged-up, and there’s little sign of an imminent reversal.

US stocks slumped on Thursday amid new reports that President Donald Trump was being investigated for obstruction of justice, while investors also digested unexpectedly hawkish guidance from the Federal Reserve.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index was hit hardest, slipping by 0.8% at 1:29 p.m. ET. The S&P 500 lost 0.4%, while the Dow fell by 0.1%.

The biggest decliners in the tech sector included Alphabet/Google, which was downgraded by Canaccord Genuity, as well as eBay, Yahoo and Apple. All four fell more than 0.8%.

Equity weakness started in earnest Wednesday after the Fed announced a 25-basis-point interest-rate increase as expected but took a surprisingly hawkish stance on the pace of remaining hikes. The central bank also said it would shrink its $ 4.5 trillion balance sheet this year, despite recent data showing that inflation was lagging the Fed’s 2% target.

The Fed now faces a delicate balancing act as it attempts to reconcile flagging inflation with positive economic data like the US unemployment rate, which sits at its lowest in 16 years.

US stocks, which were starting to look immune to the myriad negative headlines surrounding Trump, finally seemed to react to the latest news about the ongoing FBI investigation into Russian meddling in last year’s election. Reports emerged Wednesday that investigators last month began seeking to learn whether Trump tried to interfere in the Russia investigation.

Obstruction of justice is a criminal and impeachable offense, and investors are clearly concerned that Trump will be unable to implement the proposed policies that have carried stocks higher since the election.

The weakness in tech stocks is the latest flare-up for a sector that has been responsible for a large portion of stock gains in recent months. The Nasdaq 100 index dropped by 3% over the two-day period that ended Monday, highlighting the fragility of a rally driven largely by a handful of high-flying mega-cap companies.

The stock sell-off is also being exacerbated by a broad decline in commodities, most notably continued losses in crude oil, which has slipped by nearly 5% over the past two days.

Further, Asian and European stocks were down in regular trading, also applying pressure to the US market.

NASA scientists were stumped when the usually impeccable camera on the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter produced a “wild and jittery” photo of the moon’s surface.

The unusual photo features a squiggly pattern that the NASA team didn’t initially understand. They quickly figured out, however, that the orbiter must have been hit by something as it was travelling through space.

The orbiter’s camera system (LROC) consists of three cameras mounted on the spacecraft. Two are narrow angle cameras which capture high-resolution black and white images, while the third is a wide-angle camera that takes moderate resolution photos.

LROC researchers concluded that there must have been a brief violent movement of the left Narrow Angle Camera (NAC).

There were no spacecraft events, such as solar panel movements or antenna tracking, that might have caused such a jitter during this period. “Even if there had been, the resulting jitter would have affected both cameras identically,” explained Mark Robinson, principal investigator of LROC at Arizona State University’s School of Earth and Space Exploration.

“The only logical explanation is that the NAC was hit by a meteoroid,” Robinson said. “The meteoroid was traveling much faster than a speeding bullet… In this case, LROC did not dodge a speeding bullet, but rather survived a speeding bullet!”

A tweet from the orbiter’s official Twitter account sought to reassure people that it didn’t suffer any lasting damage in the collision.

Robinson explained that it’s extremely rare for such an event to show up in the photos that LROC produces.

The camera system typically only captures images during daylight and at that, it’s for less than three hours, so for the camera to be hit by a meteor during the time that it was also capturing images is “statistically unlikely.”

“A meteoroid impact on the LROC NAC reminds us that LRO is constantly exposed to the hazards of space,” said Noah Petro, deputy project scientist from NASA Goddard. “And as we continue to explore the moon, it reminds us of the precious nature of the data being returned.”

Stocks are taking a dive.

The Dow and S&P have gone a record 109 days without a 1%+ decline but today that might come to an end. At 1:04PM EST the Dow and S&P were down .80% and .87%.

Volatility is also popping.  The Chicago Board Options Exchange volatility index, which gauges investor anxiety (technically, implied expectations for volatility in the stock market) and is widely known as the VIX index, has been trending down for a while.

However, the CBOE Volatility index was up 9.79% at 1:04PM EST.

Financials are the big losers today. At 1:04PM EST, the XLF financials ETF was down 2.46%.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Amgen’s Repatha drug cut the risk of heart attacks and strokes by over 20 percent in patients with heart disease, demonstrating a clear clinical benefit beyond its ability to slash “bad” LDL cholesterol levels, data from a huge study known as Fourier showed on Friday.

Results from the highly anticipated 27,564-patient Fourier study should help remove some barriers to patient access from health insurers and pharmacy benefit managers, who have been rejecting some 75 percent of prescriptions written for the costly medicine.

Repatha cut the combined risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart-related death by 20 percent compared with a placebo in patients already on high doses of cholesterol-lowering statins, such at Lipitor. Most trial subjects had had a prior heart attack or stroke.

However, there was no difference in cardiovascular death in the two groups, which disappointed investors. Amgen’s stock was down as much as 6% Friday morning. Other cholesterol-lowering biotechs with drugs in development, Esperion and The Medicines Company were down 25% and 18%, respectively.

Separately, Repatha cut heart attacks by 27 percent and stroke by 21 percent. In the second year of the study, the results were more pronounced, with a 35 percent reduction in heart attack risk and a 24 percent decrease in stroke risk.

“Just like in statin trials the benefit appeared to grow over time,” said Dr. Marc Sabatine, the study’s lead researcher, who presented the data at the American College of Cardiology scientific meeting in Washington.

“As a clinician this is very big news. We have another tool to significantly reduce heart attacks and stokes. That’s a big win,” said Sabatine from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Longer term, Sabatine said, there could be a reduction in deaths as well.

The trial’s primary composite goal included need for artery clearing procedures and hospitalization due to chest pains from angina in addition to heart attack, stroke and death. On that measure, the overall risk reduction was 15 percent, primarily due to no difference from placebo in angina hospitalizations.

Injected

Repatha, injected either once or twice a month, lowered LDL by about 60 percent to a median of 30, with a quarter of patients getting below 20, researchers reported. Earlier guidelines set an LDL target of 70 for such high risk patients.

There were no reports concerning safety issues. Incidence of cognitive decline, cataracts, new onset diabetes and muscle-related side effects were similar to the placebo group.

The results should loosen the purse strings of insurers reluctant to pay for a drug with a list price of over $ 14,000 a year before discounts, given the high cost of treating strokes and heart attacks.

“To see a more than 20 percent risk reduction for stroke was really exciting,” said Amgen research chief Sean Harper.

Amgen said it is taking steps to remove onerous barriers to patient access, including a plan under which it would offer to refund Repatha costs for all eligible patients who have a heart attack or stroke.

Repatha and rival Praluent, from Regeneron Pharmaceuticals and Sanofi, work by blocking the PCSK9 protein that prevents LDL being removed from the blood.

“The class is likely to grow to at least a $ 3 billion to $ 5 billion worldwide market over the next 5 plus years,” forecast RBC Capital Markets analyst Michael Yee.

Due to the high rejection rate, sales have been anemic – just $ 58 million for Repatha and $ 41 million for Praluent in the fourth quarter.

Sabatine said he would like to see Repatha tested in other high risk patients, such as those with type 2 diabetes without prior history of heart attack, which could substantially increase the market.

“As a society we need to move to modifying these risk factors earlier in life to not only prevent recurrent events but to prevent first events,” he said.
