SEATTLE—In-person video game conventions are back! Kind of!

Nerdy conventions and other physical events began reappearing in public halls late last year, though what a difference a year makes. PAX West 2021 was my first in-person convention since the COVID-19 pandemic began, but the event was a ghost town, full of empty, blacked-out spaces and massive gaps in the cast of showcasing companies. Last week’s PAX West 2022, on the other hand, finally felt like the real deal, and it was fortunately met by a vigilant, mask-wearing crowd.

Some gaming companies have apparently moved on from local convention participation, with Microsoft and Sony not hosting PAX West booths (though each had a presence at last month’s boisterous Gamescom 2022 in Cologne, Germany). Hence, this post-PAX “coolest upcoming games” feature is far from comprehensive, owing as much to missing companies as to specific games not demoing well in packed convention halls. Even so, we played enough diverse fare to feel comfortable shouting out solid PAX West highlights.

Fox’s 9-1-1: Lone Star pulled off two reunions at once when it tapped Lisa Edelstein to play Gwyneth Morgan, the ex-wife of Rob Lowe’s Owen Strand.

In the 9-1-1 spinoff’s Season 2 premiere, airing Monday, Jan. 18 at 9/8c, the 126 crew responds to a military tank on the loose in downtown Austin and a human pile-up at the roller derby. Meanwhile, Owen is reunited with Gwyneth — a powerhouse New York lawyer who comes to Austin in the wake of their son T.K. (Ronen Rubinstein) being shot — just as he receives an update on his cancer.

TVLine spoke with Edelstein, whose previous TV credits include of course House and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce, about not just working with but seeing West Wing scene partner Rob Lowe for the first time in some 20 years.

TVLINE | As a West Wing fan, your casting was a fun bit of news to report.
I know! It’s superfun. They called me [during Season 1], but the timing wasn’t going to work out. And then they had all summer to write a really good part for me. [Laughs] They did such a good job.

TVLINE | What is the state of the union between Gwyneth and Owen?
T.K., their son, was shot in Season 1, she she goes to Austin to nurse him back to health. In the meantime, Rob’s character has to go through the rest of his chemo, so he ends up getting really sick. While she’s there, the pandemic hits, so she is kind of “stuck” there for a lot longer than she expected to be — and then “the magic happens.” [Gwyn and Owen] sort of remember both why they were together to begin with, and why they got divorced. It’s a really great match. She’s really bright, she gives him as much s–t as she feels like giving him, and she sees through everything, so you can see this really fun history that they had. I had a lot of fun doing it, and it was fun also because Rob and I had history.

TVLINE | Speaking of that history, was the casting pure serendipity, or was someone out to reunite The West Wing‘s Sam and Laurie?
It was a combo. I think they really loved the idea of runiting Sam and Laurie, it gave the casting a bit more meaning. They also liked our chemistry.

TVLINE | Laurie was a memorable character from The West Wing‘s launch. At that point in late 1999/early 2000, were people flagging you down on the street, “Hey, Sam Seaborn’s hooker!”?
The funny thing is that we did all the D.C. stuff at the end of shooting Season 1. The second episode, where Sam barges into the restaurant where Laurie is with a client? We shot that 10 months after we shot the pilot, when the show was already a big hit and had a lot of momentum, so everybody in D.C. knew about my character and they were very excited to meet “the hooker.” [Senator] Al Franken was like, “Oh, you’re the hooker!” “Oh, you’re Al Franken!”

TVLINE | How recently had you and Rob seen each other, prior to Lone Star?
I hadn’t seen him since I did West Wing with him.

TVLINE | Whoa! Not even at, like, The Ivy or wherever all the fabulous celebs hang out these days?
[Laughs] Right, we all live in one house, all the famous people! No, I had never seen him, not once. The funny thing is that for the first day of West Wing I was in bed, smoking a joint in my underwear, and the first day of Lone Star was in bed, in pasties.

911: Lone Star Season 2TVLINE | In Gwyneth’s eyes, what was the problem with Owen as a husband? What is his character flaw?
There have been some hints that his relationship to his work at the firehouse in New York took priority over everything else. They’re both also strong-willed people, and they are great together in some ways, but they also don’t let each other get away with anything at all. I think they both really love each other — it’s not a relationship that was ever filled with animosity. They just grew out of each other and moved on.

I also think 9/11 was a big part of the demise of their relationship, because he was in the [fire]house next to the Twin Towers, and the stress of that disaster was very hard on both of them. I don’t think he handled it particularly gracefully, and it killed what was left of their relationship.

TVLINE | For how long do we have you on Lone Star?
I think I’ll be there throughout the whole season. I’m heavy in the beginning, I know — we got five episodes in before the holidays.

Kominsky Method EdelsteinTVLINE | And we will also see more of you on The Kominsky Method?
Oh yeah. Oh yeah. I’m very excited about Kominsky. I play Alan Arkin’s drug-addled daughter, and it’s a really fun part.

TVLINE | Now, Alan won’t be around for the third and final season….
Right, but they brought in Kathleen Turner, which was equally fun and exciting. And Paul Reiser started in Season 2, and he’s always wonderful. And Michael Douglas is a total mensch, a lovely person.

TVLINE | And with that mention of Michael Douglas, we’ve come full circle, seeing as The American President very much sired The West Wing.
That’s true! That’s true.

Cue up W.G. Snuffy Walden’s Emmy-winning West Wing theme in your head, because the HBO Max special that reunites the acclaimed drama’s original cast promises to make your Barlet-loving heart salute.

Premiering Thursday, Oct. 15, A West Wing Special to Benefit When We All Vote marks the first time in 17 years that the original cast of the Emmy- and Peabody Award–winning drama has come together — accompanied by series creator Aaron Sorkin and executive producer/director Thomas Schlamme, for a theatrical stage presentation of the “Hartsfield’s Landing” episode from Season 3.

Among the chosen episode’s plotlines, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman anxiously awaits the 42 votes cast by the titular town in a portentous New Hampshire presidential primary. “It’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance,” Richard Schiff, who returns as White House Communications Director Toby Ziegler, tells TVLine. “That’s why it was so special to do this particular episode.”

In addition to Schiff, OG cast members Martin Sheen, Rob Lowe, Bradley Whitford, Dulé Hill, Allison Janney and Janel Moloney also reprise their respective roles from the episode, while Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) succeeds the late John Spencer as White House chief of staff Leo McGarry.

TVLine spoke with Schiff about the special’s “poignant” timeliness, what about the staging gave him goosebumps, and more.

TVLINE | I don’t think I realized how excited I was for this special until the trailer came out, and I got so emotional watching just those 90 seconds. When’s the last time that anywhere close to this many of you were together in one space?
This many of us? It’s been a while. We’ve been together maybe with this many of us but with different groupings, like Joshua Malina (who played Will  Bailey) instead of Rob [Lowe]. When we were campaigning in ’16 in Ohio, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, that was a pretty big group with Mary McCormack (who played Kate Harper), and Josh, and Allison, and Brad, and Dule. Other than that, it might have been a party at Allison’s house. And I think Brad had a dinner at his house about five or six years ago, and that was the last time we were all together sitting down.

TVLINE | Is a stage reenactment like this something you would be game for anyway, or did the “Get Out the Vote” cause make it a must do?
Well, it seems like anytime that they ask The West Wing to come together for some reason or another, it’s for political reasons, so it’s not a surprise that this is to help to get out to vote, that that’s our cause. But just to get back together for the sake of getting back together, other casts get to do that and reap millions of dollars from it, but we of course have to do it pro bono because we’re good people. [Laughs]  But that’s what makes it so special, literally special, because there’s a purpose behind it, and it always feels better to do this kind of work for a reason. Otherwise, it’s just kind of self-congratulatory or, you know…

TVLINE | A cash grab?
A cash grab, exactly — which I don’t have a major objection to in principle! [Chuckles] But that doesn’t seem to be who we are.

West Wing Reunion Leo RecastTVLINE | There is one new face in the mix, and while Sterling K. Brown is a fine, fine, Emmy-winning actor, he’s almost a decade younger than John Spencer ever was in the role. Might that change a bit how we perceive Leo in this?
No, because it’s really about gravity. It’s really about the ability to understand, to have the knowledge and the gravity to appreciate each other in the world, and Sterling Brown has that hyperintelligence and gravity that John Spencer had. It’s actually a brilliant choice.

always go back to my acting class in college, when a 20-year-old girl played the mother of another 20-year-old girl, and we were so engrossed in the scene. The master teacher, Earle Gister, who was my mentor, said, “You see, when you believe it, they believe it.” And there was no question that we believed that Kim, who played the mother, was the mother of Otta, who played the daughter, because they believed it. So age never even crossed my mind when Sterling was on set, no.

TVLINE | I’m always fascinated when an actor goes to reprise a role that they haven’t played for like 15, 20 years. Was there something you had to remind yourself about Toby to really lock back onto the character?
You know, Aaron [Sorkin] was so good at capturing or utilizing elements of who we were as people that eventually it filtered into the role, into the character, so Toby was very much made up of Aaron’s mind but my soul and my body, and it’s hard to separate that after doing it for seven years. In fact, when I go off on political stuff — which I would, of course, not be invited to do if I didn’t play the part — it’s very hard for me to create my own persona as opposed to going there as Toby. Of course, that’s what they would rather see — they would rather see Toby give a speech than Richard give a speech — but it’s easy for me to capture his passion, and his depth, and complexity.

West Wing Reunion

TVLINE | One thing I remember fondly about Toby is he could cut you off at the knees and make you feel like the dumbest person in the room with a casual, muttered aside.
Yes, but that comes from, I think, a real disappointment with humanity while maintaining a hope that somehow we can elevate ourselves to reach our potential. I think that’s what the dichotomy was within him, because his desire to cut people down is minimal. It’s something he could do in his sleep, and it’s not the point. The point is, “Why aren’t people on board with what will make this world a better place?” And when people were not on board is when he became a bit more cutting than he otherwise would be, considering this world is not abiding by Toby’s plan.

In those days, think about what [President George W.] Bush was doing to this country with the Invasion of Iraq, and how different we would be had [Al] Gore been allowed to accept his victory in 2000. Think about where we would be with alternative energy, all these things…. Now when you think about that, it’s mind-boggling. It’s mind-boggling that there’s an existential threat to the very existence of this democracy and that someone is succeeding, with a whole lot of help I’m sure, in stealing this country from us. That’s what makes this particular episode [‘Hartsfield’s Landing”] so much more poignant, because it’s about democracy, it’s about the beauty of voting, it’s about living up to your potential and living up to your brilliance, and to not be afraid of that. That’s another reason why it was so special to do this particular episode.

West Wing Reunion PreviewTVLINE | Was there a moment on stage when seeing somebody make a gesture or hearing the timbre of a co-star’s voice gave you goosebumps and sent you back 18 years?
I wouldn’t frame it like that, but yeah. I mean, just being across from Martin again, because all of my stuff was with him and a bit with Dulé. Martin has a very particular rhythm with Bartlet, but it was a combination of things. It was Dulé on the set at one point. And then when we’re rehearsing, there’s Aaron pacing back and forth as if he had just written it last week, and Tommy Schlamme with his intense energy. Tommy has the utmost respect for what actors have to do, so despite his hurried disposition to everything, he always yields to what the actor might need for that moment. So that whole dynamic, that perfect storm of ingredients that made up our soup 20 years ago — that’s a mixed metaphor, but you know what I’m saying — was alive again.

TVLINE | It was swirling around inside that theater.
And that was awesome. That was goosebumps right there.

RELATED STORIES

Darren Criss is fully in his element on Quibi’s Royalties, and not just because the 10-episode comedy finds him playing a Hollywood songwriter surrounded by Glee alumni.

The experience of co-writing and producing a musical project for a fledgling streaming service took Criss back to his days at the University of Michigan, where his mantra became “chaos is the mother of invention.” As he tells TVLine, “During the process, we made no claims to it working. We just had to slap it all together, and I think it turned out pretty great. That’s the fun of your friends coming together for something that ultimately has a lot of heart, soul and a cheeky earnestness about it.”

Criss also says he wanted to use Royalties as an opportunity to increase the Hollywood presence of his classmates-turned-collaborators, Nick and Matt Lang. “We started StarKid, which is our theater production company, about 10 years ago, and they’ve been in the trenches of that forever,” he explains. “Being the Mr. Hollywood of the group, I’ve been dying to get people in the film and television industries to get their eyes on them.”

For this reason, the trio took a “dexterous” approach to shopping the idea around. “If someone had said they wanted this to be a three-hour movie, we could have created it as such,” Criss says. “What’s nice about [Quibi’s shorter format] is that it’s a great exercise in maximizing the space you have. And it lends itself really well to comedy. Good storytelling is hopefully malleable, so I really enjoyed this process. It wasn’t how we set out to do it, but it was a great challenge.”

Below, Criss elaborates on the process of bringing Royalties to the small(er) screen, from casting it on his phone to editing it on the set of Netflix’s Hollywood:

TVLINE | Let’s start with the important stuff: There are a lot of hot dogs on this show. How many did you actually have to eat?
[Laughs] Not many, because I’m not much of a hot dog guy. I’m not much of a processed meat guy. (Hashtag super California granola hippie loser.) While I do love a good hot dog every now and then, I don’t think anyone likes them in continuous succession, so I tried to minimize them as much as possible. That was the least of our challenges.

TVLINE | OK, what were some of the actual hurdles you had overcome?
Like a lot of things I’ve done, it was very fast and furious. The actual adage is that necessity is the mother of invention, but for a lot of those early StarKid shows, I amended that to say that chaos is the mother of invention. For a lot of the shows I worked on in college, I would write the songs just a few days before they were on stage. I also didn’t really know my lines and everything was thrown together, while the Langs had been working on the book for months. Similarly here, they’d been working on these scripts for months. But by the time pre-production rolled around, we had to write and record 10 songs in 10 days, then do pre-production for not only basically a 90-minute movie but also 10 separate music videos. [Director] Amy Heckerling flew in and also had very little time to prep. And we had to get it all done before I shot Hollywood for Netflix. So we had way more to do than was frankly possible.

On top of that, we didn’t really know how to deliver to Quibi. What are they looking for? What aspect ratios should we be shooting in? What type of coverage do we need to get? It was the Wild West in many respects. And that was something that could have been a huge problem, not having any precedent, but I’m someone who sort of relishes that. When you’re in the Wild West, there are no rules, which to me is a great thing.

TVLINE | When you go back and watch the episodes, do you find yourself watching horizontally or vertically?
I find myself going back and forth. When we were editing it, I would try to watch it on my phone as much as possible. The post-production process was the longest part of this entire thing. I would shoot a scene of Hollywood, then have to run over to the editing room. Sometimes the editing room would be in a sprinter van outside my trailer. It was tough because you’re editing in a conventional way with a nice screen and nice speakers, but the mix and the final print of this will be on your phone, which can be hard to imagine. For the songs, I wish people could watch with a big speaker system. I hope people are listening with their headphones.

TVLINE | Of those 10 songs you co-wrote, do you find that any one gets stuck in your head more than the others?
Well, they’re all stuck in my head, but not for the reason they should be. They’re in there because I had to listen to them over and over again, so I’m fond of a lot of the songs, but I’ve kind of lost objectivity. The songs have also had so many different lives. It sounds one way when you write it, another when you produce it, then another when you have the artist sing it. And then there’s how the song feels when it’s in a music video. There were lines in songs I thought were funny, but when I saw my friends [and Glee co-stars] Chord Overstreet and Kevin McHale singing them at a Griffith Park overlook of Los Angeles, with Chord in a ridiculous Scott Stapp/Jared Leto circa 2003 wig, I start loving it in a new way. They’ve all found ways to enchant me as they move forward.

TVLINE | That’s another thing I enjoyed about this, all the Glee reunions. And not just Chord and Kevin. Even people like John Stamos and Jennifer Coolidge.
You know what’s funny? I forgot that John Stamos and Jennifer Coolidge were on Glee! I became friends with them separately. Yes, they were on the show, but these are also people that were at my wedding. I forget we have a Glee connection. I wish I was that clever in the outset, like, how many people from Glee can I get together? … We actually started shooting before I had a huge percentage of people cast. This is in conjunction with a casting director, but I had to cast about 70-80 percent of this thing on my phone. It was me calling people and saying, “I have this really goofy thing. We’re homies, can you do me a solid?” So I owe a great debt of gratitude to the people who were game enough to show up to this wacky thing that I’m sure sounded absurd over my pitch on the phone, much less for a platform that they hadn’t heard of yet. The first season of anything is tough, because you have to establish so much.

TVLINE | Well, without giving too much away, the finale does leave things open for a second season. How much thought have you given that?
Anytime you write anything, you always think bigger than what’s there. The game, so to speak, of having two songwriters that have to write songs for crazy situations and artists is an endless playground of funny scenarios. We came up with so many ideas for stories, at least five or 10, and then ended up saying, “This is a Season 2 or Season 3 concept. It’s too much out of the gate.” We really had to economize what we threw at our audience, so hopefully we can earn enough interest and trust in these characters and in their hijinks that we can expand the world a little bit in a second season.

TVLINE | On top of that, I feel like it’s a show that could lend itself to social distancing better than some others.
A lot of people have been considering that. What is the socially distanced version of our show? With enough creativity, you could definitely do that. I’ve done songwriting sessions from home — FaceTime, Zoom sessions and all that. There is a world where that exists, so who knows? If that happens, you can say you wrote it here first.

Veteran TV actor Robert Conrad has died, at age 84.

“He lived a wonderfully long life and while the family is saddened by his passing, he will live forever in their hearts,” family spokesman Jeff Ballard said in a statement to People.com. No other details were immediately available.

Conrad’s long TV career began with one-shots on series such as Bat Masterson, Maverick and Lawman, before he co-starred opposite Anthony Eisley in the ABC detective series Hawaiian Eye, which ran for four seasons (from 1959-63). A few years later, he headed up The Wild Wild West, science fiction/Western series that ran on CBS for four seasons (and a long while later was turned into a big-budget feature flop by Will Smith).

Next up, Conrad played Major Greg “Pappy” Boyington on Baa Baa Black Sheep, while also costarring in NBC’s Centennial miniseries. His other of many TV credits included A Man Called Sloane, High Mountain Rangers, Jesse Hawkes and High Sierra Search and Rescue. Most recently, he guested on a 1999 episode of Just Shoot Me, though it appears (per IMDb) he has in the can a guest spot on the upcoming Nash Bridges reboot.

Conrad was also, quite famously, a fixture on the Battle of the Network Stars internetwork competition series, often serving as a most intimidating team captain, building off of his reputation as a pitchman for Eveready, where in a series of commercials he dared ya to knock the battery off his shoulder.

Israel advances plans for nearly 2,200 settler homes in West Bank – NGO https://briefnews.eu/israel-advances-plans-for-nearly-2200-settler-homes-in-west-bank-ngo/ https://briefnews.eu/israel-advances-plans-for-nearly-2200-settler-homes-in-west-bank-ngo/#respond Wed, 26 Dec 2018 17:20:54 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/israel-advances-plans-for-nearly-2200-settler-homes-in-west-bank-ngo/

Israeli authorities have advanced plans for nearly 2,200 settlement homes in the occupied West Bank, the Peace Now NGO said on Wednesday. The plans would be the first such approvals since snap polls were called earlier this week. A Defense Ministry committee with responsibility for such projects on Tuesday and Wednesday approved the plans, which are in various stages of the approval process, AFP reported, citing the statement. It said 1,159 housing units were given final approvals before building permits can be issued, while 1,032 were at an earlier stage. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s right-wing government agreed Monday to dissolve parliament and call for early elections on April 9. Netanyahu met with settler leaders earlier Wednesday in Jerusalem. Israeli settlements are considered illegal under international law as they are built on land Palestinians see as part of their future state.
