John Malathronas

John Malathronas

July 13, 2018

Thanks to an intrepid group of Welsh explorers setting sail from their homeland in 1865, a small slice of Argentinean Patagonia will forever be Wales. John Malathronas investigates.

A sign in Spanish hangs on a Monterrey pine: “Malacara, let your memory live with my heirs”. Clery Evans—one of those heirs—points at a corralled grave, the focal point of a large, landscaped garden.

I look down and read: “Here lie the remains of my horse Malacara that saved my life during an Indian attack in the Valley of the Martyrs on 4-3-84 as I was returning from the cordillera.”

Yes, despite the presence of Monterrey pines, I’m not in California. Although I’m surrounded by a well-tended lawn, I’m nowhere near the home shires. I’m in the small town of Trevelin high up in the Argentine Andes and, well, this is the grave of a horse.

Evans was nicknamed El Molinero (‘The Miller’), after the flour mill he founded in Trevelin became a blueprint for the region. At its heyday, there were 22 mills in the area until the 1950s, when the newly-built Patagonian Express brought flour at lower prices from larger enterprises up north.

Today only Nant Fach remains, outside Trevelin, where Mervyn Evans, proud of his Welsh pedigree, single-handedly built a flour mill in his farm “so that the traditional knowledge is not lost”.

Welsh tradition is what travelers come to Trevelin for. They find it in abundance in the two casas de té: Nain Maggie and La Mutisia. With their maps of Wales, red dragon emblems and Welsh language posters, they serve afternoon tea and a bounty of cream cakes, baked “after grandmother’s recipes”.

One thing Oscar’s kept, though, is his religion. He unlocks Bethel Chapel that stands on an open field with the Andes spectacularly silhouetted in the horizon. Non-denominational, it was first erected in 1897, but the current brick building with its red corrugated roof and hardwood floorboards dates from 1910.

“Here I baptized my children in 1970,” Oscar says. We used to have a wandering pastor who came for weddings and baptisms. We now open it for a reunion de canto—to sing hymns every now and again. There are always 60-70 people present.” The pastor’s lodgings today house ‘Ysgol Gymraeg Yr Andes’, a bilingual Spanish/Welsh school funded by the province of Chubut.

The Argentinians have a lot to thank the Trevelin colonists for. When Chile and Argentina divided Patagonia at the turn of the last century, they split the Andes according to its hydrography: The rivers flowing into the Pacific would belong to Chile and those flowing into the Atlantic would belong to Argentina. As Rio Futaleufú drains the region around Trevelin and eventually flows into the Pacific, this should all belong to Chile.

Meghan Markle appears in Wales wearing WELSH designer and £1350 coat https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-appears-in-wales-wearing-welsh-designer-and-1350-coat/ https://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-appears-in-wales-wearing-welsh-designer-and-1350-coat/#respond Thu, 18 Jan 2018 15:34:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/meghan-markle-appears-in-wales-wearing-welsh-designer-and-1350-coat/

Meghan Markle, 36, and Prince Harry, 33, have arrived in Cardiff for the first stop of their tour of Welsh capital city.

The Suits actress wore a chic black coat with a large belt tied in a messy bow to emphasise her tiny waist.

The coat was a £1350 Stella McCartney number and the trousers were by the Welsh fashion house, Hiut Denim.

She added black pointed toe Kiki boots by Tabitha Simmons, and appeared to wear a black scarf knotted around her neck.

She carried a mini Venice in forest green bag with tassels by DeMellier London in one hand.

It’s just five years old but Hiut denim has big plans to reinvigorate the once vibrant production scene in Cardigan, Wales.

At one time home to an industry that saw 40,000 pairs of jeans produced each week, Hiut is determined to harness the town’s forgotten skills in its own workshop which now has 18 members of staff.

Hiut is part of a growing number of small British denim brands capitalising on the trend for good quality, accountable and sustainable fashion.

Meghan and Harry will be greeted by members of the public at Cardiff Castle, where they will see musical performances and poetry readings.

They will also meet sportsmen and women on the day dedicated to promoting Welsh culture.

Meghan and Harry are also scheduled to visit the Star Hub community and leisure centre in Tremorfa and meet members of the organisation StreetGames.

Meghan has recently visited Nottingham and Brixton where she received a warm reception from Britons.

Meghan and Harry were late for their arrival in Cardiff due to problems with the trains.

While the Prince and his wife-to-be were set to arrive at Cardiff Castle at 1:30pm, they eventually arrived around an hour later.

Harry and Meghan were delayed on the GWR train. A GWR spokesman told the Mail Online that said they could not comment on individual travellers but said that trains were delayed because of a “Network Rail infrastructure issue, namely a points failure at Didcot, which has impacted services.”

Crowds have been waiting outside the castle since 7.30 am this morning.

A Cardiff council spokesman said: “Well-wishers are welcome to come and see the Prince and Ms Markle inside the castle grounds but are encouraged to travel to the city centre by public transport.

“The visit to the Star Hub is not open to the public and no road closures are planned for either visit.”

The visit comes after there were rumours that Prince William was ‘furious’ about clashes in the royal schedule.

Prince William is also carrying out visits today.

Welsh singer Aled Jones: 'I've made 26 more albums than Beyoncé' https://briefnews.eu/welsh-singer-aled-jones-ive-made-26-more-albums-than-beyonce/ https://briefnews.eu/welsh-singer-aled-jones-ive-made-26-more-albums-than-beyonce/#respond Sat, 04 Nov 2017 03:11:53 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/welsh-singer-aled-jones-ive-made-26-more-albums-than-beyonce/

Did you ever imagine you’d still be in the business after all these years?

If you told me I’d be on my 33rd album, I’d expect to be in an old people’s home in a rocking chair! I saw the stats recently and I’ve apparently made 26 more albums than Beyoncé but two less than Elton John, so that’s now my challenge. You’ve recorded a song on your new album with your son Lucas.

How was that? It came out of the blue because I’ve heard him sing around the house, but he’s never wanted to sing professionally. But he turned round one day and said, “I think my voice is going to break soon and it’s a shame we haven’t sung anything together,” so he came to the studio and it was a real tear-in-the-eye moment for me.

You did Strictly Come Dancing in 2004. Do you still dance?

Not in any formal sense, but before Strictly I’d never danced at all, not even on my wedding night. Now, once I’ve had a few too many sherbets, I turn into the Welsh John Travolta. I’m on the dance floor giving it large, but I don’t remember any of the moves from the show.

What’s the biggest misconception about you?

Even now, at the age of 46, people still think I’m a whiter-than-white choirboy and I’ve never been that. I’ve always just been a normal person and not an angelic little boy who spends 99 per cent of his time in churches.

When was the last time you cried?

When I did Going Back Giving Back recently. It was such an emotional show that I cried on 15 of the 22 episodes.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

Terry Wogan told me, “Spread yourself as thinly as possible because it makes it more difficult for people to get rid of you.” That’s why I do everything I’m asked to do.

What’s on the cards for you work-wise for the rest of the year?

I’m touring Australia, then I’ll be back here promoting the new album. My Weekend show is back on ITV at Christmas, too, and I’ll be carrying on with my Classic FM show and Songs Of Praise. I’ll be keeping busy!

One Voice: Believe is out now.

Aled tours the UK from November 17.

Irvine Welsh: My six best books – David Bowie of Station To Station and more https://briefnews.eu/irvine-welsh-my-six-best-books-david-bowie-of-station-to-station-and-more/ https://briefnews.eu/irvine-welsh-my-six-best-books-david-bowie-of-station-to-station-and-more/#respond Thu, 17 Aug 2017 23:33:09 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/irvine-welsh-my-six-best-books-david-bowie-of-station-to-station-and-more/

He also wrote The Acid House and Filth.

His play Performers is at the Assembly Rooms during the Edinburgh Fringe, 4.45pm daily.

DAVID BOWIE: Station To Station (Parlophone)

A transitional album for Bowie where he moved into becoming a soul artist.

He was going through a heavy cocaine period. I don’t believe that art influences people to take drugs but I almost want to take cocaine listening to this.

It’s a grandiose album of great conviction.

IGGY POP: Brick By Brick (EMI)

This was when he was flying under the radar but it’s a great critique of the brashness of modern America and hankering for humanistic values.

The greatest thing about him is his voice.

When he hits that low timbre in the ballads, it’s hypnotic.

LOU REED: Rock ’N’ Roll Animal (Sony)

A live album that feels studio-produced.

I don’t usually like guitar solos but it starts off with a fantastic one from Steve Hunter that perfectly sets up Sweet Jane.

He does a harrowing version of Heroin.

I was dabbling at the time and Reed gave it a kind of credibility.

ROXY MUSIC: Country Life (EMI)

Popular wisdom says they were past their best but I beg to differ. I think this is their masterpiece.

It foreshadows all the musical trends of the Eighties and Nineties and had the effect of an exotic, glamorous cabaret.

For a teenage boy, it had an amazing cover with semi-naked women that probably wouldn’t be allowed now.

OASIS: (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? (Creation)

This spawned some mega anthemic songs that had never been done with that vitriol and power before.

As a songwriter, Noel Gallagher was untouchable then.

You played this and felt yourself being pinned to the ceiling with every song: Roll With It, Don’t Look Back In Anger and Champagne Supernova.

MULL HISTORICAL SOCIETY: Loss (Wea)

Colin MacIntyre hatched all these beautifully crafted pop songs from his bedroom in Tobermory, played every instrument and produced it himself.

It can be quite rousing and he knows how to build a song.

His gigs are incredible entertainment.

81yo imam jailed for sexually assaulting girls in Welsh mosque https://briefnews.eu/81yo-imam-jailed-for-sexually-assaulting-girls-in-welsh-mosque/ https://briefnews.eu/81yo-imam-jailed-for-sexually-assaulting-girls-in-welsh-mosque/#respond Sun, 09 Jul 2017 14:32:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/81yo-imam-jailed-for-sexually-assaulting-girls-in-welsh-mosque/

An 81-year-old imam has been jailed for 13 years for sexually assaulting young girls during Koran lessons at a mosque in Wales.

Mohammed Haji Sadiqque was found guilty of six counts of indecent assault and eight counts of sexual assault on four girls aged between five and 11 years old.

The assaults took place between 1996 and 2006 at the Madina mosque in Cardiff where Sadiqque taught for more than 30 years.

An investigation was launched in 2006 when two girls came forward with complaints against the imam. He denied the allegations and the investigation was shelved until 2016 when it was restarted after two more victims came forward.

Mike Jenkin, a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service, said: “These women have shown remarkable courage in coming forward to speak about the abuse they suffered at the hands of Mohammed Sadiqque when they were young girls.

“Sadiqque was a respected figure in the community with considerable influence and power, which makes the bravery of his victims all the more admirable.

“The evidence given by these women meant the prosecution was able to present a compelling case to the jury, resulting in the guilty verdicts.”

A jury found Sadiqque guilty in June and he was handed his sentence on Friday. He has consistently denied any wrongdoing and claims he is the victim of a conspiracy by other members of the mosque.

Calling the abuse “a gross breach of trust,” Judge Stephen Hopkins QC ordered Sadiqque to register as a sex offender indefinitely, The Guardian reports.

“There is a darker, deviant side to you which this trial has exposed,” Judge Hopkins said. “This was a gross breach of trust – parents sending their young, female children to be taught the Koran by you.”

LSD ‘treasure hunters’ prompt police clampdown on Welsh village https://briefnews.eu/lsd-treasure-hunters-prompt-police-clampdown-on-welsh-village/ https://briefnews.eu/lsd-treasure-hunters-prompt-police-clampdown-on-welsh-village/#respond Thu, 29 Jun 2017 22:46:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/lsd-treasure-hunters-prompt-police-clampdown-on-welsh-village/

The Welsh village of Carno, population 730, has found itself at the center of a drugs treasure hunt after a former detective revealed details of a potential stockpile of 40-year-old LSD.

The curious case has its roots in 1977, when police raided an old mansion in the village and dismantled a multi-million pound drug factory. Approximately 800 police officers were involved in “Operation Julie.”

The raid reportedly uncovered 1 million LSD tablets as well as enormous quantities of materials for making the drug. The operation was reportedly supplying as much as 90 per cent of LSD in the UK at the time.

Former police officer Stephen Bentley, who was part of Operation Julie, claims in a new edition of his book on the case, “Undercover: Operation Julie – The Inside Story,” that one of the gang members says he left a substantial amount of LSD buried in the woods near the mansion.

“I have made my mind up. That stash is almost certainly still there,” Bentley said.

The claim has prompted local police to carry out increased patrols in the area to combat any opportunist treasure hunters who might go in search of the mind-altering drugs. Officers have also launched an investigation to discover if there is any substance to the story.

“Dyfed-Powys police are aware of the issue and are assessing the content of the disclosure. We will be checking the records we hold to establish whether or not matters raised warrant further investigation,” the force said in a statement to The Guardian.

“In the meantime, we will be making the current owners of [the mansion] Plas Llysyn aware of the disclosure and the potential for persons to visit the area in an attempt to locate the drugs. We will be providing them with reassurance through increased patrols.”

Swansea shirt sponsors give corporate ticket allocation to Welsh charities in kind gesture https://briefnews.eu/swansea-shirt-sponsors-give-corporate-ticket-allocation-to-welsh-charities-in-kind-gesture/ https://briefnews.eu/swansea-shirt-sponsors-give-corporate-ticket-allocation-to-welsh-charities-in-kind-gesture/#respond Fri, 23 Jun 2017 04:42:19 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/swansea-shirt-sponsors-give-corporate-ticket-allocation-to-welsh-charities-in-kind-gesture/

Despite being based in South East Asia, Letou’s CEO is from the UK and has taken the unique step of giving something back to the Welsh community.

Football fans occupying corporate seats at games are often accused of being more interested in the snacks on offer at half-time than actually watching the match.

And Swansea have now instead given them to two local charities, Shelter Cymru charity and Disability Sport Wales, launching a campaign called “Letou Goals for Good.”

This scheme will help the charities provide experiences for the disadvantaged who may not have the funds to afford to go Premier League games.

Speaking about the deal, Swansea Chief Operating Officer Chris Pearlman said they chose Letou because of their determination to help those Premier League football seems to exclude.

“We were drawn to Letou because of their drive to support local charities in Swansea, even though they are based thousands of miles away,” he said.

“Their commitment to the local community in south west Wales which really captured our imagination.

“We are looking forward to working with them through their ‘Letou Goals for Good’ programme over the season to make a real difference and give something back through their support.”

Letou Chief Executive, Paul Fox, said: “It would be easy as an Asian-facing gaming company to sign the cheque and build awareness purely through branding.

“I was brought up in Glasgow and have family in Swansea. So when the opportunity arose to work with Swansea City, it was really important to me that Letou uses our partnership to give back to the community as much as possible.

“We’re donating our corporate hospitality box to homeless charity Shelter Cymru, and handing over our season ticket allocation to Disability Sport Wales.

“I am confident that the ‘Letou Goals for Good’ campaign we are launching will make a difference.”

Britain’s Got Talent 2017: Fans OUTRAGED as Welsh choir change lyrics to Jerusalem hymn https://briefnews.eu/britains-got-talent-2017-fans-outraged-as-welsh-choir-change-lyrics-to-jerusalem-hymn/ https://briefnews.eu/britains-got-talent-2017-fans-outraged-as-welsh-choir-change-lyrics-to-jerusalem-hymn/#respond Fri, 02 Jun 2017 07:45:57 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/britains-got-talent-2017-fans-outraged-as-welsh-choir-change-lyrics-to-jerusalem-hymn/

Angelicas Celtis were the second act of the night to perform to the judges Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden, Alesha Dixon and David Walliams.

But their stunning rendition of the song Jerusalem was met with backlash by viewers with many slamming the choir for replacing the word ‘England’ with ‘Britain’.

Those watching at home flocked to Twitter to criticise the all-girl group for singing the wrong words to the patriotic English anthem which was written by William Blake in 1804.

One angered fan wrote: “Outrageous. Welsh choir Angelicus Celtis has just sung ‘Jerusalem’; finished with line ‘In Britain’s green & pleasant land’ #BGT No England?”

“OMG some choir just changed the words to Jerusalem. Its England’s not Britain’s green and pleasant land. PC gone mad.? #BGT,” commented another.

A third wrote: “They just changed the words to Jerusalem! It’s was beautiful but seriously that’s just wrong! It’s England’s green and pleasant lands! #BGT.”

“DO NOT MESS WITH JERUSALEM!!!!! if you don’t want to say England, don’t sing the damn song #bgt,” stated another.

Paul Potts, who won the first series of Britain’s Got Talent in 2007, also took to social media to express his outrage over the choice of song.

Eurovision 2017: BBC forced to defend 'absolutely SHAMEFUL' tweet about Welsh language https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2017-bbc-forced-to-defend-absolutely-shameful-tweet-about-welsh-language/ https://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2017-bbc-forced-to-defend-absolutely-shameful-tweet-about-welsh-language/#respond Sun, 14 May 2017 19:07:35 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/eurovision-2017-bbc-forced-to-defend-absolutely-shameful-tweet-about-welsh-language/

The tweet, posted by the official BBC Wales Twitter account, said: “Portugal in Welsh? Portiwgal. No, really. #Eurovision #ESC2017 (We still haven’t forgiven them for #Euro2016…)”

Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood was among those offended by the comment, quoting the post and blasting: “Dear @BBCWales – was the staff member writing this drunk last night? Do you REALLY think we in Wales need this from the state broadcaster?”

In a statement, obtained by Wales Online, BBC Waled defended their comment and denied claims that is was offensive.

“This was one tweet in a series supporting Lucie Jones in the Eurovision Song Contest,” they said. “The tweet was referring to a mistake made in French earlier on in the evening. It was meant to be a light-hearted reference to that mistake, and nothing else.”

However, many Eurovision fans stood by Leanne and took to social media to criticise the remark.

One Twitter user called it “absolutely shameful”, adding: “Someone needs to start asking serious questions about this and BBC Wales’ attitude towards thew Welsh language.”

Another asked: “Serious question @BBCWales could you tell the license payers how they make an official complaint about this please?”

Further critics also called for the member of staff who wrote the comment to apologise.

Meanwhile, BBC Wales’ tweet wasn’t the only controversy surrounding the annual contest, broadcast live from Kiev, Ukraine.

As the votes poured in towards the end of the night, last year’s winner Jamala took to the stage, only to be rudely interrupted by an over-enthusiastic fan who climbed up on the platform and began to unbutton his trousers.

The stage invader proceeded to flash his bum to the cameras before security quickly forced him off.

The cheeky streaker has since been identified as notorious Ukrainian prankster Vatlii Sediuk, who famously tried to kiss Kim Kardashian’s bottom before he was wrestled to the ground by her bodyguard last year.

The 41-year-old judge poked fun at how the Welsh singer “boasts” of having performed with every credible artist in history.

“It’s going to be this all day, all day. They could be like, quack quack quack,” said will.i.am, waiting for the first contestant to appear.

“I’ll be like, ‘I want you on my team, because the way you crackle…’,” he joked.

“Tom’s going to be like ‘I’ve sang with Donald Duck. I’ve sang with Daffy Duck’. I don’t care if they quack when they sing.”

Fans of the show were angry at the jibe towards the 76-year-old singing legend.

One viewer tweeted: “I can’t be the only person who doesn’t find Will I Am (or whatever his p***ing name is) funny at all! #TheVoice your jokes are s**t mate!”

“Will I Am saying ‘Tom would say I’ve sung with Donald Duck!’, Will always comes across Quackers!! #TheVoiceUK,” posted another.

A third raged: “Why is Tom Jones doing this whole Voice thing with will.i.am? He is so above this s***e,” as a fourth said: “”Will I am you’re quackers @thevoiceuk.”

However, it wasn’t all negative feedback, as some fans came out in support of the Black Eyed Peas star.

One fan tweeted: “Will.i.am is my absolute fav on the Voice he’s so funny.”

“Love Will I Am on #TheVoice So funny,” posted another, as a third said: “Will I am cracks me up lol #thevoiceuk.”
