If we could have dancing Trolls and fighting LEGOs, why not singing UglyDolls? The line of plush dolls branded as weird, creepy-cute toys had no indication of any musical ability when they exploded in popularity in the mid-2000s, but here we are. But if you’re going to make UglyDolls into a musical, why not go all in, as STX did with the uber-talented voice cast including Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, Janelle Monae, and Nick Jonas. Felt monsters never looked so cute as they do in UglyDolls, the animated musical directed by Kelly Asbury which adapts the plush toy line created by Sun-Min Kim and David Horvath in 2001. The movie starts off in Uglyville, a place where the “weird is celebrated,” and follows the journey of a curious UglyDoll named Moxie who finds herself stumbling upon another town, Perfection, where conventionally beautiful dolls reside. It’s there where she and her crew of fellow UglyDolls learn to embrace their own imperfections and weirdness.

I’m a little impressed that Asbury and writer Erica Rivinoja were able to fashion a whole mythology for UglyDolls, a toy line that really had no hook apart from being really weird-looking. UglyDolls were the toys for “alt-kids,” the ones who thought themselves too cool for regular toys. Growing up at the height of the UglyDolls boom, I found that they made for fun collectibles, since each was wholly unique from the other. I’m not sure what to make of them turning this unique line of plushes into a musical, but hey when you got Kelly Clarkson leading the charge, I’ve got no complaints.

UglyDolls also stars Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, Wang Leehom and Pitbull.

Here’s the official synopsis for UglyDolls:

In the adorably different town of Uglyville, weird is celebrated, strange is special and beauty is embraced as more than simply meets the eye. Here, the free-spirited Moxy and her UglyDolls friends live every day in a whirlwind of bliss, letting their freak flags fly in a celebration of life and its endless possibilities, occasionally looking to the sky, where a new UglyDoll will appear and be embraced by the community.

Moxy (Kelly Clarkson) loves her square-peg life in this round-hole town, but her curiosity about all things leads her to wonder if there’s something – anything – on the other side of the mountain which nestles Uglyville. Moxy gathers a group of her closest friends and sets off to find what’s on the other side. They discover another world – Perfection – a town where more conventional dolls are trained in protocols before they graduate and are sent to the “real” world to find the love of a child.

In Perfection, Moxy and her crew are subject to the manipulations of Lou (Nick Jonas), the perfect doll in charge of training recruits. Here, the UglyDolls will confront what it means to be different, struggle with their desire to be loved, and ultimately discover that you don’t have to be perfect to be amazing because who you truly are is what matters most. Also starring in the voice cast of UGLYDOLLS are Wanda Sykes, Emma Roberts, Gabriel Iglesias, and Wang Leehom.

UglyDolls opens in theaters on May 10, 2019.

In the footsteps of other raunchy coming-of-age comedies like Superbad and American Pie where teens just want to have a lot of sex comes Blockers, a movie about three parents who will stop at nothing to sabotage their daughters’ sex lives.

Starring John Cena, Leslie Mann, and Ike Barinholtz as the traditionally-minded parents who discover their daughters’ prom night “sex pact,” Blockers is exactly what you’d expect out of a movie about teenage girls written by five dudes.

Thrown together by fate — or rather, by their daughters being friends since preschool — Cena, Mann, and Barinholtz’s characters get to metaphorically clutch their pearls when they discover texts sent by their kids making a pact to lose their virginities on prom night. Horrified at the besmirching of their girls’ purity, they set off on a misguided mission to “cock block” their kids.

As the stars of the movie, Blockers is more of a vehicle for Cena, Mann, and Barinholtz to get into all sorts of shenanigans – the most cringe-inducing being the scene where Cena chugs a beer into his butt, and subsequently farts it into Barinholtz’s face.

Of course, it doesn’t really occur to any of them that they’re holding their daughters to a weird double standard, ignoring John Cena’s wife when she incredulously asks, “Did your dad try to stop you when you wanted to lose your virginity?” except Barinholtz, who says “he high-fived me.” The trailer does make a joke out of Cena’s uncomfortableness with his daughter’s burgeoning sexuality when he can’t hug her anymore “without feeling her boobs”…so there’s that.

Written by Brian & Jim Kehoe, Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, and Eben Russell, Blockers — whose IMDB summary hilariously still describes Blockers as being about “three fathers” — clumsily feels too much in line with the “protective dad” stereotype. Though Leslie Mann — whose comedic talents are sorely underappreciated — does balance out this “guy’s comedy” a bit, as does the presence of female director Kay Cannon, but the movie’s premise still feels incredibly dated.

When three parents stumble upon their daughters’ pact to lose their virginity at prom, they launch a covert one-night operation to stop the teens from sealing the deal. Leslie Mann (The Other Woman, This Is 40), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, Suicide Squad) and John Cena (Trainwreck, Sisters) star in Blockers, the directorial debut of Kay Cannon (writer of the Pitch Perfect series).

Blockers is set to open in theaters on April 6, 2018.

RT’s #1917LIVE re-enactment of the Russian Revolution has just witnessed Vladimir Lenin’s return home. As the Bolshevik takeover draws nearer, the events and characters gain in complexity, thanks in no small part to you, the project’s growing user base.

This would not have been possible without our many loyal readers inhabiting fascinating real-life characters as we march onwards.

This self-contained world has taken on a life of its own over the past four months, attracting project from near and far. Giving people a window into Russian history that goes beyond your typical history class has always been the aim.

Even we, the creators, are often surprised by the humorous exchanges taking place between key historical figures – Russian, French, German – something that could never have happened in real-life 1917. One can only imagine all the tensions that could have been diffused with Twitter at the dawn of the 20th century.

The country exploded in revolt in March, 1917 and to the great surprise of many, the centuries-old Russian monarchy was toppled. By April, the gloves were really off. Rallies, insubordination and open violence stretched from the central city of Samara all the way to our sailors stationed at Helsingfors, present-day Helsinki.

[The most entertaining thing on Twitter for the coming months]

Vladimir Lenin’s timely (untimely – if you’re the @ProvisionalGovernment) return spelled doom for social-democratic elites whose admirable philosophy and promise of reform never amounted to much, save for political bickering.

One-upmanship was the name of the game in April, as the Provisional Government and the rival Soviets duked it out on the political arena – a period known as the Dual Rule. The latter was intent on keeping Russia’s promise to its Entente allies, France and Britain. The Soviets – representing the soldiers, peasants and workers, opposed the plan, sowing social upheaval until Lenin’s return.

Their trump card was the overwhelming popular support that the social-democrat Alexander Kerensky and his cohorts never mustered. In April, we see just how risky the Provisional Government’s move to rule with just bureaucracy as its only tool.

The leader of the Bolshevik party Vladimir Lenin charted an entirely different course – one of building a global Socialist Revolution based on the key tenets of Marxism, starting at home. Lenin is forever known to history as a master manipulator with an ability to hypnotize people into rising up against seemingly insurmountable odds. His April Theses had laid the foundation for continuing this struggle for power at home.
