Network Rail is urging West Coast main line passengers to avoid all but essential rail travel to and from the capital over the three weekends.

The station is closing as part of Britain’s Railway Upgrade Plan, which includes Network Rail replacing North Wembley junction – a major intersection on Europe’s busiest mixed-use railway.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail’s London North Western route, said: “There is never an ideal time to shut the railway but these three weekends are the least disruptive times to do it.

“We have worked together for the past three years with train operators to carefully plan this closure of the railway in a way that minimises impact on customers.

“It’s vital the track at North Wembley is replaced to continue to safely meet the huge demand of passenger and freight rail services on the West Coast main line. This work will result in better, more reliable journeys in future.”

Peter Broadley, executive director for customer, operations and safety at Virgin Trains on the West Coast line, said: “With no services in to or out of Euston we strongly advise our customers to avoid travelling to London on the days affected.

“We know this will impact on people’s travel plans, particularly over a bank holiday weekend, so we encourage customers to plan ahead and where possible travel at other times.”

While trains are not running out of Euston, alternative options include rail replacement buses and tickets being valid on other reasonable journeys.

But what about the unsuccessful people among us? What mistakes can we watch out for and avoid?

After all, you don’t want your free time go down the drain.

With that in mind, let’s discuss some behaviors to avoid. Here are 11 things unsuccessful people do over long weekends:

1. They neglect their loved ones

“A three-day weekend lets you schedule this critical quality time,” said Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of “Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job.”

That being said, spending a long weekend getting away from everyone isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

But unsuccessful individuals don’t avoid people because they’re mindfully trying to unwind — they do it because something’s holding them back from connecting.

2. They stress out

We all need to rest and recharge our batteries from time to time. Unsuccessful people are unable to do this, even over long weekends. This leads to misery during a time that should be filled with relaxation and happiness.

3. They spend a ton of money (needlessly)

You don’t want to blow all your cash right before the holidays.

Unsuccessful people don’t know how to control themselves over long weekends and end up with empty wallets as a result. Squeezing too many impulse purchases into such a short amount of time is a really bad idea.

For years, movie fans would joke about whether or not Amityville: The Awakening actually existed. The tenth movie in the Amityville Horror series was filmed back in 2014, but found itself delayed. And delayed again. And again. Posters would arrive and trailers would appear, but the movie itself slid around the calendar like a hairless, grease-drenched monkey on a slip-n-slide. The film became a joke and each release date change kept the joke running.

Now, the joke has reached its final punchline: Amityville: The Awakening quietly hit theaters last Friday and suffered one of the worst opening weekends of all time.

Amityville: The Awakening grossed only $ 742 over the weekend from 10 theaters. That’s an average of $ 74 per theater. And if we’re going to be generous and assume that the average American movie ticket price of $ 8.84 applies here, that means that about 83 people nationwide paid to see the film over the weekend. It made less money than a South Korean movie called RV: Resurrected Victims. It made less money than Tulip Fever in its ninth week of release. Ouch.

That’s a rightfully undignified conclusion for a film that has lived an undignified existence. It’s also the natural next step when you consider that Amityville: The Awakening was literally dumped on Google Play earlier this month. For free. Ouch again.

Granted, we all saw this coming. Amityville: The Awakening was originally set to open on January 2, 2015 before being yanked off the schedule. It was then set for April 15, 2016. It was then pushed forward to April 1, 2016 before bouncing to January 6, 2017. And then it was set for June 30, 2017 before it fell by the wayside again. Its October release was finally announced in September. This movie has felt toxic for a long, long time.

The apparent lack of confidence in the film was underscored by the fact that the film’s marketing simply, well, stopped. Only horror buffs knew this movie existed and they knew well enough to stay away. Plus, Dimension Films honcho Bob Weinstein has bigger and more loathsome things to concern himself with right now, so this opening was inevitable. But a three-digit opening weekend for a movie that is part of a long-running and recognizable horror series is the kind of car crash that makes us all want to slow down and gawk.

It’s not like this formula is broken: The Conjuring 2 literally opens in the infamous Amityville haunted house and that movie made a bundle! The success of Get Out, Annabelle: Creation and It (and even the more modest success of Jigsaw over the weekend) prove that horror is alive and well and still pulling in audiences. Other headlines suggest that Dimension (or at least its leadership) may not be around in its current form much longer, but this is the latest example of the company completely crapping the bed when it comes to releasing a genre movie that should have been a modest success. Bad horror movies, if marketed well, make their money back. That’s just basic Hollywood math.

Anyway, Amityville: The Awakening is apparently terrible and you probably shouldn’t see it. But it does hit Blu-ray, DVD, and digital HD on November 14, 2017, just in case you want to take a closer look at the wreckage.

Imagine having seven and a half weeks off every year. Imagine what you could do: take car trips, take naps, picnic with your kids, explore your neighborhood, learn to make éclairs, write that novel. That’s what happened — most likely minus the éclair-making — in New England in 1908, when a mill seeking to accommodate its Jewish workers on their Sabbath gave employees not only Sunday off but Saturday too. It was a spark: 18 years later, Henry Ford closed his factories two days a week, and subsequent union victories brought the two-day weekend to the U.S., and the world, for good.

So let’s do it again. As part of their platform, green parties in the U.K. and Australia have recently floated the idea of a three-day weekend, for everyone, all the time. Politicians in Italy are also weighing a similar scheme, hoping to create more jobs. After all, if a 32-hour week were normal, more employees would be necessary to fill in the rest of the hours.

A four-day workweek could also be good for the environment.…

This idea hasn’t really broken in the U.S. yet: There has been an uptick of schools switching to four-day weeks simply to save money, and the state of Utah attempted something similar for public workers. But it turns out that just working longer shifts for fewer days can actually be detrimental to your health. Some high-powered tech firms have implemented or discussed implementing four-day weeks, but that’s the kind of change that, while positive, offers more leisure time to those already privileged enough to enjoy it. One reason that green parties are the ones for pushing for systemic change, says Nicholas Ashford, director of the technology and law program at MIT, is that a four-day workweek could also be good for the environment. “A lot of the enthusiasm for a shorter workweek wasn’t driven by the idea of equity for the unemployed, it was driven by environmentalists,” Ashford says. He also points out that reduced commuting to the office doesn’t necessarily mean people use fewer resources: “What if they buy snowmobiles?”

This is the kind of change that seems to cut against modern trends curtailing idleness and encouraging everyone to maximize resources, all the time. Using the rhetoric of idle resources, businesses like Uber and Airbnb urge people to turn their leisure time into time operating as an “alternative” taxi driver or an under-the-radar hotelier rather than taking time to finish a book, sit with a coffee, see an old friend. “Work is much more than purchasing power,” Ashford says. “It’s how we identify as individuals. People’s self-esteem and their self-image is tied up with what they do.” But veering from the encouragement to work 24/7 could offer a cultural swerve away from that kind of self-definition, right around the time some futurists are predicting a wave of automation will put some of us out of work anyway. In 1908, it was impossible to imagine two out of every seven days for leisure; 109 years later, it could, just maybe, be time to shift those norms again.

Of course, adjustments would be necessary. Ashford points out that hourly wages would have to go up to ensure people could still make a living on a four-day workweek; otherwise the whole thing falls apart. Meanwhile, critics of a Swedish pilot program testing a six-hour workday tried to shutter it early over concerns about unsustainable costs, even though participating workers reported better productivity and improved health.

A three-day weekend is a much-needed reprieve, reminding everyone — including ourselves — that the goal is to have more time to kick back, not for an extra moment on Slack, not for being the Uber driver who gets there first. Write that novel, go to your kid’s play, take a nap. It’s the future, and I believe we were promised some goddamned downtime.
