NASA and the ESA have shared early images of Mars, taken on September 5th, that promise new insights into the planet’s atmosphere. Data from the near-infrared camera (NIRCam) is already offering a few surprises. For starters, the giant Hellas Basin is oddly darker than nearby areas at the hottest time of the day, NASA’s Giuliano Liuzzi and Space.comnoted — higher air pressure at the basin’s lower altitude has suppressed thermal emissions.

The JWST imagery also gave space agencies an opportunity to share Mars’ near-infrared atmospheric composition using the telescope’s onboard spectrograph array. The spectroscopic ‘map’ (pictured at middle) shows the planet absorbing carbon dioxide at several different wavelengths, and also shows the presences of carbon monoxide and water. A future research paper will provide more detail about the Martian air’s chemistry.

It was particularly tricky to record the images. Mars is one of the brightest objects the James Webb telescope can see — a problem for an observatory designed to study the most distant objects in the universe. Researchers countered this by capturing very short exposures and using special techniques to analyze the findings.

This is only the initial wave of pictures and data. It will take more observations to reveal more about Mars. However, the spectral info already hints at more information about the planet’s materials. Liuzzi also thinks JWST studies could settle disputes over the presence of methane on Mars, potentially signalling that the Red Planet harbored life in its distant past.

It's a wondrous photo showing a detailed cluster of galaxies. It's also currently being used by bad actors to infect systems with malware. Security analytics platform Securonix has identified a new malware campaign that uses the image, and the company is calling it the GO#WEBBFUSCATOR.

The attack starts with a phishing email containing a Microsoft Office attachment. Hidden within the document's metadata is a URL that downloads a file with a script, which runs if certain Word macros are enabled. That, in turn, downloads a copy of Webb’s First Deep Field photo (pictured above) that contains as a malicious code masquerading as a certificate. In its report about the campaign, the company said all anti-virus programs were unable to detect the malicious code in the image.

Securonix VP Augusto Barros told Popular Science that there are a couple of possible reasons why the bad actors chose to use the popular James Webb photo. One is that the high-resolution images NASA had released come in massive file sizes and can evade suspicion in that regard. Also, even if an anti-malware program flags it, reviewers might pass it over since it's been widely shared online in the past couple of months. 

Another interesting thing of note about the campaign is that it uses Golang, Google’s open-source programming language, for its malware. Securonix says Golang-based malware are rising in popularity, because they have flexible cross-platform support and are more difficult to analyze and reverse engineer than malware based on other programming languages. Like other malware campaign that starts with a phishing email, though, the best way to avoid being a victim of this attack is to avoid downloading attachments from untrusted sources.

Representatives for Vice President Mike Pence and acting White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney have contacted Webb, according to one official, while another confirmed his name has been “circulating at the White House.”

Opposed to both the never-ending Middle Eastern conflict and the Iran nuclear deal, and hawkish on China, which he called “the greatest strategic threat that we have right now” during his short-lived primary run, Webb appears to be a good foreign policy fit for the Trump administration’s new direction.

A Vietnam veteran, Webb briefly registered on the 2016 campaign’s media radar when asked who he was most proud to have as an enemy, answering “I would have to say the enemy soldier that threw the grenade that wounded me, but he’s not around right now to talk to.”

Webb was elected to the Senate for his first and only term in 2006 after switching to the Democratic Party. He briefly mulled running as an independent presidential candidate after dropping out of the Democratic primary in late 2015, claiming his views were no longer in line with mainstream Democrats. He helped pass the post-9/11 GI Bill and covered Asia-Pacific on the Foreign Relations Committee.

Under former President Ronald Reagan, he spent three years as assistant Defense Secretary before being promoted to Navy Secretary in 1987, only to leave the following year in protest over cuts to the military.

Mattis handed in his resignation letter last month, after Trump’s unexpected announcement that he would pull the military out of Syria – fulfilling a campaign promise but counteracting the former general’s advice. While Mattis initially planned to step down in February, Trump “essentially” fired him a few months early, appointing his deputy, former Boeing executive Patrick Shanahan, to take over on an interim basis.

With much of military leadership opposed to Trump’s proposed drawdown in Afghanistan – a proposal most vets and many Americans nevertheless support, according to recent polls – the administration has had to cast its nets wider in the search for new Pentagon leadership. Trump does not appear to be in a hurry to replace Shanahan, hinting he might be around “for a long time” during his visit to troops in Iraq over Christmas, but other names reportedly under consideration include Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas), Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina), and Jim Talent, a former Republican senator.

Emmerdale ended with a dramatic cliffhanger last night as Debbie (played by Charley) was shot. 

The ITV soap stalwart was rushed to theatre after Ross Barton (Michael Parr) accidentally fired the gun at her. 

Ross was heading to see Joseph (Ned Porteous) in order to get revenge on him for his acid attack. 

Of course, he didn’t know it was actually Debbie who was behind what happened to him.

Joseph tried his best to keep Debbie’s name away from any speculation in a bit to protect his girlfriend. 

But he couldn’t help her when she walked into Home Farm and and was caught in the cross fire. 

After being shot in the abdomen, Debbie slumped to the ground bleeding. 

But will she die following the gun shot?

Last Friday, Charley explained on Lorraine how she is happy on Emmerdale for the moment. 

She explained: “I’d love to go and do other things and when the time is right, I will do, but right now I’m happy.

“I love it, I love all the people, I’m challenged every single day.

“While the children are little it really suits my life. 

“I go home to my kids every single night and I don’t think you can put any sort of price on that.”

With Charley seemingly happy on the soap, perhaps Debbie will survive this after all.

Meanwhile, fans last night were completely stunned by the revelation. 

They flocked to Twitter as one wrote: “Omg never seen that coming #Emmerdale.”

“Will Debbie survive? #emmerdale,” another said. 

A third commented: “Debbie can’t die #emmerdale.” 

“I hope Debbie pulls through, Cain is going to go really mad if he finds out what happened to Debbie #Emmerdale,” wrote another user. 

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV from 7pm.

A new report on the James Webb Space Telescope has found that ongoing technical issues with final testing and assembly of the $ 8.8 billion project will probably cause the launch date of the oft-delayed instrument to slip again to the right. Presently, NASA is targeting June 2019 for launch aboard an Ariane 5 rocket.

The US Government Accountability Office published the report on Wednesday. It concluded, “Given several ongoing technical issues, and the work remaining to test the spacecraft element and complete integration of the telescope and spacecraft, combined with continuing slower-than-planned work at Northrop Grumman, we believe that the rescheduled launch window is likely unachievable.”

The report catalogs a number of issues that Northrop Grumman has dealt with during the integration process, particularly the technical challenges and workforce issues needed to meet them. For example, the report cites a worrying problem that cropped up during one of the tests to deploy the telescope’s essential sunshield—one of its six membrane tensioning systems experienced a potentially crippling “snag.”

After spending three months at a temperature of just 20°C above absolute zero, the massive James Webb Space Telescope emerged from a large vacuum chamber at the end of 2017. Now, after reviewing data from testing done there, scientists have given the instrument a clean bill of health, moving it one step closer to space.

“We now have have verified that NASA and its partners have an outstanding telescope and set of science instruments,” said Bill Ochs, the Webb telescope project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “We are marching toward launch.”

Bookies have tipped the soap star to join the reality show following her brother’s stint in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Here!.

Hollyoaks actor and Jamie Lomas, 42, came in second place on the ITV contest.

It is believed that Charley, 29, could enjoy the same success in the house.

Betfair has the actress at odds of 33/1 to make an appearance.

However, Charley has made no mention of going on to the show so viewers will have to wait and see if she makes a shock entrance.

This year’s Celebrity Big Brother is set to mark the 100 years since women gained the vote by starting with only female celebrities and male stars will be joining later on.

Other celebrities rumoured to be entering the house are Boris Johnson’s sister Rachel, former MP Charlotte Leslie and actress Shobna Galati.

If the rumours are true, Charley may have a lot to talk about with Rachel as her father Stanley Johnson was also in the jungle alongside Jamie. 

Her Emmerdale character, Debbie Dingle, is currently at the centre of a major storyline as she has embarked on a romance with the mysterious Tom Waterhouse (played by Ned Porteous).

However, she is yet to find out about the shady plans he has in store.

Emmerdale continues tomorrow at 7pm on ITV.

Celebrity Big Brother returns on Tuesday 2 January at 9pm on Channel 5.

The couple, who have been married for four years, confessed to declining a storyline presented by ITV bosses.

Show producers suggested Charley and Matthew character’s Debbie Dingle and David Metcalfe be romantically linked, but the couple admitted to turning down the idea.

Opening up about their decision, Matthew said: “They once told us they were considering it and we were the first to ring up and ask for it not to happen!”

“It’s too much – living with each other, working with each other and then being romantically linked in the show together. Also, they are characters who wouldn’t suit,” Charley told OK! Magazine.

The couple who share two young sons, Buster Wolfenden and Bowie Grey Wolfenden, also spoke about extending their family.

“We’ll start thinking about having another baby next year. We’d love a girl but I think we’re destined to have a house full of boys,” Matthew said.

Meanwhile, Charley, 29, and Matthew, 37, revealed they have no intentions of leaving Emmerdale anytime soon.

Matthew even admitted he could see himself working on the soap for the rest of his career.

However, Charley confessed she’d like to play another character at some stage, although she is happy on the show at the moment. 

“I get to go home to Buster and Bowie each night and you can’t put a price on that,” Charley said. 

“There’s no job more important than being with your family.”
