Strictly Come Dancing bosses have been through the works this year trying to pull together a show that will provide the nation with some much-needed glitz and glam amidst the devastating coronavirus pandemic. But new reports have suggested yet another obstacle has popped up, this time caused by the good old-fashioned unpredictable British weather.

Following a scorching couple of weeks where temperatures hit 37C in some parts of the UK, bosses are apparently fearing a second heatwave could cause problems in the studio.

A Strictly source reportedly told The Sun that in order to keep participants safe, the studio must be kept below 21C.

On Monday, the weather started to cool as in true UK style, the nation experienced dramatic rain and thunderstorms, but health-and-safety are apparently worried that the dancer’s increased sweat from the muggy weather will increase chances of catching coronavirus and it spreading on set.

The performers already break a sweat due to their vigorous routines under the hot studio lights, and one can’t imagine doing all that on top of the sweltering heat.

A spokesperson said: “The safety of our cast and crew is of the utmost importance to us,” while promising updates in due course.

It is believed restrictions will also include no live audience, with sources claiming that it would be “impossible to safely socially distance audience members”.

It has also been said that the show will be run with a skeleton crew much like many other productions, to minimise the risk.

A BBC insider reportedly told the publication that show executives are “devising 100 different formats” to prepare for the rules to change again.

“Preparing for this year’s show is a huge headache,” they said.

“The goalposts keep moving, so the big decisions are being left to the last minute so we’re as up to date as possible.”

They added: “The slightest change to the rules could have a massive impact on how the show is filmed.

“Many [celebs] are weighing up their options, so Strictly still doesn’t have a full line-up.”

Strictly returns later this year.

“Ann says, and I’m sorry Carol, I have to say this to you, she finds my bones are better weather forecasters than any of your presenters.

“Sorry Carol, hips and knees ache long before the first rain drops fall from the sky.”

Carol could be heard listening intently before hitting back at the comment.

“I think Ann should get in here and have a bash at presenting the weather,” she suggested.

Project Runway All Stars Recap: Which Designer Failed to Weather the Storm? https://briefnews.eu/project-runway-all-stars-recap-which-designer-failed-to-weather-the-storm/ https://briefnews.eu/project-runway-all-stars-recap-which-designer-failed-to-weather-the-storm/#respond Thu, 07 Mar 2019 13:10:37 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/project-runway-all-stars-recap-which-designer-failed-to-weather-the-storm/

Mother Nature made an unofficial guest appearance on Wednesday’s Project Runway All Stars, luring the half-dozen remaining designers into a battle against the elements.

This week’s climate change-themed episode challenged the season’s top six contestants to “design transformational resort wear, a look that transitions from one type of weather condition to another all in the same resort.”

Let’s start with the winner: The judges were “crazy” about Michelle Lesniak’s windy-to-rainy jumpsuit, whose overlay skirt snaps off and converts into a raincoat. Not only did the panel praise Michelle for her inventiveness, but it commended her “genius” fabric blending. In fact, the judges were so enamored with Michelle’s look, they could only find fault in the shoes she chose to pair it with.

Kudos also go to Irina Shabayeva, whose “brilliant” thunder-to-windy ensemble — featuring pants made with water-resistant silk, as well as a kaftan that converts into a windbreaker — landed her in second place.

As for Dmitry Sholokhov’s hot-to-snowy two-piece (which he believed to be the “hardest one”) and Anthony Ryan Auld’s snowy-to-sunny jumpsuit (which Alyssa Milano called a “couture snuggy”), the judges were completely split down the middle. In fact, the only thing the panel could agree on was that both designers need to step up their game.

Now for this week’s bottom two: Evan Biddell’s sunny-to-rainy jumpsuit left the judges “confused,” with Alyssa going so far as to call it “junior.” But it didn’t catch quite as much ire as Christina Exie‘s “dull and inexpensive” sunny-to-windy swimsuit. Not only did the judges find it far too generic, but they determined that her concept was “not thought through.”

“I’m really glad that I’ve been able to be a part of Project Runway All Stars, to come to the U.S. and do this,” Christina said on her way out. “I just wish that I’d pushed myself more. That’s all. I’ve got a lot to figure out. What direction do I want to head in? I guess that’s my next chapter. It’s a blank piece of paper from here.”

BBC UK weather forecast: MIST and fog patches to DAMPEN Valentine's Day sunshine https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-mist-and-fog-patches-to-dampen-valentines-day-sunshine/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-mist-and-fog-patches-to-dampen-valentines-day-sunshine/#respond Thu, 14 Feb 2019 08:08:30 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-mist-and-fog-patches-to-dampen-valentines-day-sunshine/

Forecasters expect a band of patchy mist and fog to smother areas in the south and east of the UK.

Southern England and east Wales will bear the brunt of the bad weather during the early hours of Thursday.

Meanwhile, a covering of cloud strikes the far north, resulting in an outbreak of rain across Northern Ireland.

It is going to be a little bit hazy across some northern parts of the UK this Valentine’s Day, with visibility less than 100 metres.

Meteorologist Carol Kirkwood reported the BBC Breakfast weather forecast live from the London Coliseum today.

She told viewers: “I can tell you it is pretty nippy up here and it’s not just cold in London. It’s cold across many parts of England and so Wales this morning.

“So if you’re heading out you might encounter some frost and the other thing to watch out for this morning is some dense fog.”

Despite the unpleasant conditions in parts of the UK today, Thursday is set to be a day brimming with sunshine and clear skies.

The more direct the sunshine is the bluer skies, with warmest conditions across England and Wales.

Temperatures to reach 14 degrees Celsius in some places and it is possible the heat value could hit 15 degrees Celsius around the Moray Firth.

Nearby weather fronts will be kept at bay by an area of high pressure sitting to the south east of the UK.

The southwesterly breeze continues today and into Friday, though they will be lighter.

Britons can look forward to more sunshine tomorrow, although there will be some mist and fog first thing.

But there will be a change in weather, particularly in the northwest of the UK, where cloud and rain will arrive.

Given the UK has achieved above-average temperatures for this season it is unsurprising bookmaker Coral predicts this Valentine’s Day to be the hottest ever.

Coral make it just 6-4 (from 4-1) February 14 goes down in history as the warmest ever. The record for the hottest Feast of Saint Valentine currently stands at 19.1C.

“It’s going to be one of the hottest Valentine’s Day that we have ever seen in the UK,” Coral’s spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said.

“[There are] mild temperatures up and down the country thanks to a warm front coming in from the Azores.”

He continued: “We’ve slashed our odds this week on Thursday breaking the record and all eyes will be on the thermometers as Valentine’s Day heats up, with it a real possibility.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.

Chicago weather: Airports CLOSE – FULL list of flights cancelled in and out of Chicago https://briefnews.eu/chicago-weather-airports-close-full-list-of-flights-cancelled-in-and-out-of-chicago/ https://briefnews.eu/chicago-weather-airports-close-full-list-of-flights-cancelled-in-and-out-of-chicago/#respond Wed, 30 Jan 2019 20:12:17 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/chicago-weather-airports-close-full-list-of-flights-cancelled-in-and-out-of-chicago/

Chicago is in the midst of a terrifying winter chill, with authorities cancelling flights and issuing immediate health warnings. It comes after deluges of snow and icy winds prompted a number of airlines to pull routes across America during the day. Chicago’s two airport terminals, O’Hare Airport and Midway Airport, have reported more than 1,800 flights have now been cancelled. With the thermometer in Chicago still reading in the -20s, more disruption could be sparked for travellers scheduled to leave the American city.

What flights have been cancelled in and out of Chicago?

O’Hare Airport has been greatest affected, with at least 1,479 cancellations and 161 delays reported.

Its Twitter page advised travellers: “Check flight status with carrier. Stay safe and warm friends.”

Meanwhile, at Midway Airport, 326 cancellations were reported, which represents about two-thirds of scheduled flights.

It confirmed on its social pages: “Due to extreme cold weather in #Chicago air carriers at MDW have cancelled nearly 330 flights and are reporting minimal delays.”

Yet passengers there were offered complimentary hot chocolate to ease the blow.

Airlines Are Lingus, Norwegian Air and Brussels Airlines all run flights from the UK to O’Hare Airport, as well as Wow Air and Finish.

KLM, Air France, and Virgin Atlantic run routes from London to Midway.

Passengers should check their airline providers before travelling.

What is the current weather situation for travellers in Chicago?

Chicago is being bombarded by a historic cold, with temperatures predicted to reach a staggering -60C.

Now more snow is expected to fall as more than 20,000 residents were without power.

Hundreds of schools are closed across the Chicago area, more than 2,000 flights have been cancelled and train services suspended as the city battles a historic cold.

Meanwhile, with the cold snap affecting further states in America, more flight disruption has been caused.

What is the health risk of the Chicago weather?

Frostbite is classed as injury to body tissues caused by exposure to extreme cold, typically affecting the nose, fingers or toes, and has been flagged as a major health risk in the current climate.

It occurs when bodies are exposed to freezing temperatures, and anything below -0.55C (31F).

With the conditions in Chicago currently dropping as low as -35 on average, it is a huge risk.

The condition occurs quickly, too.

Most concerning is the fact when the thermometer drops to -40, frostbite can strike within two minutes flat.

If skin is exposed to wind chill between -20 and -30, it can strike within 10 minutes.

Meanwhile in slightly warmer temperatures of -10 and -20 degrees, it can affect travellers in 30 minutes.

Travellers suffering from frostbite will be left with white-coloured skin and a feeling of numbness.

The NHS advises taking frostbite patients to a warm environment, and seeking the advice of a healthcare professional to warm up the area in warm but not hot water.

It adds: “A bath of water at 40C to 41C (104F to 105.8F) is recommended for rewarming. The rewarming process is often very painful, and large amounts of painkillers may be needed.

“It’s important not to rewarm the affected area if there’s a chance of it freezing again, as this can lead to further tissue damage.”

BBC UK weather forecast: 60MPH gusts to THRASH Britain as temperatures PLUMMET to freezing https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-60mph-gusts-to-thrash-britain-as-temperatures-plummet-to-freezing/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-60mph-gusts-to-thrash-britain-as-temperatures-plummet-to-freezing/#respond Mon, 21 Jan 2019 07:15:05 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-60mph-gusts-to-thrash-britain-as-temperatures-plummet-to-freezing/

A fierce weather system is heading towards the UK from the north west and will result in the cloud thickening in Scotland and Northern Ireland today.

Carol Kirkwood, who presented the BBC Breakfast weather report this morning, told viewers there would be a lot of cloud around during the early hours of the day.

She said: “We do have a lot of cloud first thing this morning, especially across the central sway of the UK.

“As we go through this week, while it’s going to be cold, by Friday temperatures will recover temporarily before going down hill.”

Today, the winds will pick up around the Western Isles and gusts could move as fast as 60mph.

When the rain arrives it will turn more persistent and heavy through Northern Ireland and western Scotland by the afternoon.

There may also be some hill snow in Scotland, however, much of England and Wales will remain dry and bright.

In fact, forecasters expect it to be quite sunny in Kent this afternoon and temperatures across the UK will range between four and eight degrees Celsius.

For most Britons Monday is going to be a rather frosty day and it may be hazy too in some places due to dense cloud.

As a weather system sweeps the south of the UK this evening it will feel brisk when the winds gain momentum.

What’s more, hill snow is predicted in parts of Scotland and the Pennines, while the white stuff may come out in bursts on lower ground.

Overnight and into Tuesday morning, the heat value will tumble as the winds continue to tear through the UK.

The freezing weather this January has forced leading bookmaker Coral top slash odds on this month being the coldest January on record.

Now, Coral has put odds on at 1-2 from 4-5 this month goes down as the chilliest January in UK history.

Also, the firm is offering odds of 1-10 that there is snow in any major city in the UK by the end of this week.

While it is now 4-5 chance snow will fall in London this week, as the UK is set for the longest cold spell in six years.

“It looks like we are set for one of the coldest spells of weather in six years,” said Coral’s spokesman John Hill.

“Therefore the odds have been slashed on this month ending as the coldest January on record in the UK.”

He added: “Some parts of the country have already seen snow this month and the betting suggests it will fall again next week, with London odds-on to see the white stuff.”

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One at 6am.

BBC UK weather forecast: Temperatures PLUNGE to -10C as ICE and snow warning is issued https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-temperatures-plunge-to-10c-as-ice-and-snow-warning-is-issued/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-temperatures-plunge-to-10c-as-ice-and-snow-warning-is-issued/#respond Fri, 18 Jan 2019 07:07:24 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-temperatures-plunge-to-10c-as-ice-and-snow-warning-is-issued/

Britons will have to bare the bitterly cold weather for some time as temperatures plummet across the UK.

In some regions, the heat value is expected to fall to a staggering -10 degrees Celsius following the arrival of Arctic air.

Also, there is going to be some sleet and snow over the hills, as well as a few outbreaks of rain and grey clouds.

Meteorologist Matt Terry issued an ice warning on BBC Breakfast after explaining how temperatures had drastically fallen.

He said: “A few showers overnight means icy conditions down coastal counties of England. Bright start to the east but lost of cloud in the west.”

This morning there is widespread frost in Scotland and England, with temperatures down to minus seven degrees Celsius.

Elsewhere, there will be some icy patches following the early showers on Friday morning.

Today, a band of cloud travelling across Northern Ireland and into western parts of England, Wales and Scotland is expected to bring more rain, sleet and snow.

Areas likely to be most affected by the troublesome trio includes Cumbria, the higher ground in Wales, the Pennines and the Southern Uplands.

Rain, sleet and snow could also affect lower grounds, as well as The Midlands and the West Country.

It is coldest today in the east where this afternoon temperatures could range between three and five degrees.

In the south and west temperatures are slightly higher, with figures ranging between six and nine degrees Celsius.

Friday is not going to be as sunny as Thursday, but the northerly winds will have calmed down.

As temperatures nosedive, leading bookmaker Coral has put odds on this month being the coldest on record at 5-4.

Also, the firm are offering odds on the capital city to get snow this week as the heat value plunges across the UK.

Coral make is a 4-6 chance snow falls in London by the end of the weekend.

“Winter really has arrived now and most parts of the UK are going to find no escape from the minus temperatures over the next week or so,” Coral’s spokesman Harry Aitkenhead said.

“With snow sweeping down the country too there’s every chance that this January will go down as the coldest on record, and our odds show that possibility is very much alive.”

Having seen forecasters predicting an extension of cold weather, the bookies also make it odds on at 4-5 this winter goes down as the coldest on record.

BBC UK weather forecast: Met Office issues weather WARNING as strong winds hit UK https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-met-office-issues-weather-warning-as-strong-winds-hit-uk/ https://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-met-office-issues-weather-warning-as-strong-winds-hit-uk/#respond Mon, 07 Jan 2019 08:07:33 +0000 http://briefnews.eu/bbc-uk-weather-forecast-met-office-issues-weather-warning-as-strong-winds-hit-uk/

delivered the weather forecast this morning and warned temperatures would get much colder as the week progresses.

She added there was a yellow weather warning from the Met Office due to strong wings in Scotland and north of England.

Carol told viewers: “This morning it isn’t a particularly cold start to the morning for this time of year.

“But what you will find is increasingly it will turn windier the further north you travel and there is some rain in the forecast.”

She continued: “We have a couple of weather fronts, they’re moving south, bringing rain as they wrap around this area of low pressure, more rain across the north west of Scotland.

“The strongest winds will be the further north you travel the met office has a yellow weather warning in force for parts of Teeside, Fife, the highlands and northern and western isles.”

Carol added the strong winds could lead to “some big waves” in coastal areas.

She continued: “Those gusts could lead to some travel disruption and could be damaging particularly in the far north.”

However, while the day will start of fairly windy, she assured viewers it will “brighten up across northern Ireland, Scotland and England later in the day”.

Carol went on to note temperatures overnight will get colder.

“Overnight, still a fair bit of cloud around, more breaks in the sky so temperatures will be that bit lower than the night just gone but for the time of year, not too bad,” she explained.

“We are clinging on to some milder conditions by the skin of our teeth out towards the west but through the course of the early part of the morning it is still going to feel cold.

“Tomorrow promises to be a sunnier day than today, it will still be note windy but not as windy as today or tonight.”

Carol added temperatures tomorrow will be between five and nine degrees Celsius.

Looking towards the rest of the week, she said Wednesday will have a “frosty start”.

But she concluded: “Still bright days ahead, still a fair bit of cloud coming in with the wind and feeling cold.”

Meanwhile, bookmakers have slashed the odds of this winder to be the coldest on record.

Coral have revealed they have cut odds to just 1/2, with John Hill commenting: “The odds are falling all the time for this to end as the coldest winter on record in the UK and with the outlook all pointing to freezing temperatures over the next couple of weeks.

“We could also be set for the coldest January since records began.”
